In honor of Spring’s approach, and my own fresh start, I’ve created the New Beginnings Tarot Reading! You can get yours now by typing in “New Beginnings” at checkout. Find out what area of your life needs a clean slate!

Today, I’m showing the New Beginnings Reading in action. I did this reading for me, to highlight exactly what you’re getting when you get a tarot reading from me.

1. The Seed, Area of Change – Six of Swords: Changing course on my journey, literally getting my life back on track. I am at a crossroads, changing my old patterns and seeking out a new course. I know that since things have shifted, I have been feeling much better about myself. Even though I still worry about finances, I have an inner calm, which is new for me! I am logically working through difficult times, and not giving in to the panic and anxiety I typically felt.

2. & 3. The Roots, What Led Me Here – King of Cups & The Emperor: Two very strong, yet very different masculine influences have led me to this place. I’ve finally started gaining control of my emotional state, thanks to the king. Yet I have learned not to rule with an iron fist, thanks to the Emperor. I am able to take responsibility for my own part in creating the current situation, without beating myself up and feeling unnecessary amounts of guilt. I am ready to move on, and make wise decisions based on what has worked before, and what hasn’t. I can make a plan, and go through with, while still making room for contingencies and unexpected hurdles. Whereas before I have leaped on a whim, now I can go forward confidently, with the wisdom of experience.

4. & 5. The Stem, Next Steps to Take – Queen of Swords & Seven of Swords: The Queen is a confident, intellectual woman, who relys on logic and the word of law to get things done. Tempered by the creative solutions and crafty measures of the Seven, she has a bit more flexibility, while still keeping her sights on the main goal. I need to continue to rely on my intellect, and use every tool at my disposal to create a life I want to live. The Seven also warns me to be careful of fly-by-night schemes and those who don’t have my best interests at heart. I need to protect what is mine, and evaluate everything carefully before proceeding. Yet these cards give me confidence, that with right thinking and right actions, I will be able to reach my goals.

6. & 7. The Leaves, Additional Resources – Five of Swords & King of Wands – The Five of Swords reminds me that it won’t all be smooth sailing. I may have difficult waters ahead, struggling to keep up with where I need to be. That’s fine, I’ve dealt with that before. I cannot let a fear of failure or difficult times keep me from what I want, and while the Five signals possible defeat, it also signals that I need to stay fighting mad! Continue to fight the good fight, even when things look tough. I may not win the battle, but in time, I can still win the war. The King of Wands often personally stands for my significant other, and he will always be by my side when things get tough. I need to remember to allow him to help, as I often take control of a situation without showing him where he can assist me. Beyond that, the energy and the inspiration of the king will allow me to come up with creative solutions, tempered by wisdom and foresight. My energy and enthusiasm for the life I love will carry me through, as long as I make the most of my talents.

8. & 9. The Sunlight & The Rain, Outside Influences – Ten of Wands & The World: The path I’ve chosen will not be easy. It will be all too tempting to pick up all the responsibility, like I’ve always done, as shown by the Ten of Wands. I cannot continue to do it all! I must ask for and accept help, no matter what my pride says, or else I will lose all the ground I’ve gained. I must remember to take care of my physical self, I am just as important as the goals I’m working towards! The World shows that my hard work will pay off in time, with public success as well as internal fulfillment. As long as I take a holistic approach, and carefully consider each action from all angles, I will be able to make it work.

10. The Blossom, The Outcome – Seven of Wands: I will gain ground in life, after all of the hard work and careful planning. However, I will have to continue to fight to keep it! The Seven shows protection of your position, fighting for what you hold dear. I will not have time to rest on my laurels, but I will have to keep moving, to maintain what I’ve earned. As long as I’ve gone after the right goals, it will be worth it! I can be myself, without fear of what others think. I can live the life I want, as long as I’m willing to make the lifestyle changes to keep it going.

You can get your very own New Beginnings tarot reading! I am offering it for the same price as my other readings, $25, until March 15th. Order yours today!

Just the other day, I mentioned that I draw the Eight of Swords frequently, and I was right! I drew it again, so I thought I would take a more in-depth look at the card, and which aspects I should focus on more intently. So I drew two more cards, and I am pleasantly surprised with what appeared! In the Druidcraft, the Two of Cups features the same woman from the Eight of Swords, celebrating with a young man. Next is the thoughtful and studious King of Swords, deciding the best course to take.

As I posted earlier, the Eight of Swords is about breaking out of bad habits and self-imposed restrictions. But what if those obstacles are so ingrained, that you can’t do it alone? None of us is a rock, we all need the support of our family and friends to get through life. The Two of Cups is usually a romantic card, the first spark, the initial attraction that draws two souls together. However, when not in regards to a romantic question, it can also stand for partnerships, meeting of the minds, coming together and forming a plan to move forward. I need to draw support from my loved ones, and work together to get things done, especially since I’m still fighting this cold!

The King of Swords is not so much a particular person in my life right now, as the attitude that I need to take. He is justice meted out on earth, tempered with mercy. While he calculates with precision, he also takes all aspects of a situation into account. I need to come up with a plan that is suitable for my life and takes into account my weaknesses and foibles while still getting things done. He is also a reminder that I need to take all viewpoints into account, including my family members. While I often feel like I know what’s best overall, it is easy to overlook important aspects if I don’t ask.

So, in the spirit of sharing our strengths, I would like to remind you of the New Beginnings tarot readings, now available! Simply type in “New Beginnings” in the Paypal comment box, and I will create a New Beginnings spread for you. It’s a great way to reboot 2012, celebrate the soon to be Spring Equinox, or start over any aspect of your life. Don’t miss out, order your tarot reading today!

Temperance has to be one of my favorite cards. She is the scientist of the tarot deck, mixing and matching various elements to create a harmonious whole. Yet scientist should be thought of in the freest sense of the word. She is willing to explore, investigate, and experiment to see what happens next. This applies beautifully to artistic endeavors, where an unbridled creativity can produce aesthetically pleasing artwork, harmonious to the eye and to the spirit.

In the Druidcraft, this card is called the Fferyllt, roughly translated as the alchemist. Working with her elements and the cauldron, she is ready to make a transformative work in her life. Inspiration has struck, and she is able to call upon both the creative side of her mind, as well as the calculating, logical side to determine the correct proportions of each element.

I am happy to see Temperance today. I am channeling my creative ideas into prescribed forms, to share them with others. I hope to be creating items that are pleasing to the senses. More importantly, I want to share my knowledge, experience, and aesthetics with the world.

The Eight of Swords is one of the cards that I encounter on a regular basis. I often find myself immobilized by my real or imaginary fears. Unsure of the “right” direction to take, I take none, and end up like the woman in this card. She can’t see the way, her hands are bound, and she can only shuffle along, sensing danger by her feet. What a way to live! Without the typical areas of sensory perception, we can only move at a fraction of our normal pace, if we dare to at all.

Yet the same swords that appear to entrap her also offer a way out. She could easily cut through her ropes if she dares to get close enough to the swords. I find in my life, a lot of imaginary fears that scare me into inaction, which can be eliminated by “just doing it”! For example, I have been sick lately, fighting a cold that just won’t go away. I’m afraid of overextending myself and getting sicker, but most of the things on my to do list are not physically demanding! Writing and knitting are high priorities at the moment, neither of which is likely to make me feel worse. Yet I will resist, because of an unwarranted fear. I can’t set down everything while I’m sick, so I must remember to slowly and carefully do what needs to be done. Just take one step, and another, until you find your way out of the mental trap.

The Eight of Swords, while appearing to be about traps and boundaries, is really about freedom. You are capable of setting yourself free! It really is within your power, despite evidence to the contrary. Don’t let doubts and fears continue to bind you, remove them and head towards your hopes and dreams.

After the Ace of Wands yesterday, the Ace of Swords from the Druidcraft tarot is a great reaffirmation! This time period of transition is about a fresh start, cutting away at old habits, and embracing new ideas. I have been focusing lately on my own personal projects, and where the Ace of Wands highlighted the energy and inspiration, the Ace of Swords indicates forethought and planning. I have the mental capabilities to make these ideas come to life; I quite literally have the tools in my hands, just as the sword is held aloft here.

I particularly like the Druidcraft version, which evokes the idea of the lady of the lake. She hands Excalibur to Arthur, and he is finally ready to take his place in the world. Was Arthur scared? Most likely, yet he had the courage to do what needed to be done. I like to think that I can draw upon this courage in the face of uncertainty, and persevere despite not being able to see how.

While the Ace of Swords can depict a singular point of focus, it doesn’t have to. The majority of the work I’m doing now is online, in the realm of communication, a key swords trait. I’m preparing tarot lesson guides, the Tarot Musings newsletter, my tarot reading offerings, as well as a knitting design project. While I am working in many different directions, all about my connections online, and communicating with others clearly and effectively. The Ace of Swords stresses the importance of clarity and focus, and never losing sight of my goals.

In honor of new beginnings, I want to invite each of you to discover the power of a fresh start in life. Type “New Beginnings” in the notes box when you purchase a tarot reading, and I will create a New Beginnings Tarot Spread for you! It will show which area of your life could use a clean slate, and actionable steps on how to do so. Allow yourself the excitement of a new journey without as much uncertainty, by getting a New Beginnings reading today.

I want to thank each and every one of you who made my 2012 Tarot Readings a smashing success! I am so glad I could read for you, and give you some insights on 2012.

Of course, the new year hasn’t been as smooth of sailing for me. Some good, some bad, and I’m in a very transitional space right now. I’ll be posting a reading for myself soon, to gain a foothold and decide on my direction for the year.

So I decided today to use one of my favorite daily tarot spreads, to get an idea of what influences are gaining ground in my life today. The internal and external spread is one that I read about some time ago, but can’t remember where. I love it though, because it illuminates from which direction the energies are coming from, within or without.

Internally, today, I am feeling the renewal of the Ace of Wands. A new beginning, an awakening desire to get things done. I have some new projects in the works, and am reviving old ones that are worthwhile. I am seeking a new direction, as my previous course was ended. While I am unsure of how things will turn out, I know I will be fully capable to take on any challenges that come my way. Even though I don’t feel it now (thanks, sinus infection!) I am strong, and wiser due to past difficulties.

Externally, I am experiencing the creativity and emotional depth of the Queen of Cups. She is the tarot card I most identify with, so I am happy to see her here. I am using 2012 to learn more about myself and my own desires, and to gain emotional maturity and strength. My new projects are definitely creative, artistic ones, that will tune into my strengths as a fun, creative, and sensitive person. I hope that she also brings some strength in motherhood today, as my kids are already testing those boundaries!

What I find most interesting about this lineup is that the firey energy and action of the Ace of Wands is internal, while the emotional and creative depths of the Queen of Cups is external. Most would expect this situation to be reversed. But while I am taking action, they are not grandiose plunges into the unknown. Instead, they are more measured and less obvious from the outside. And my emotional strength isn’t needed within right now, dealing with stressful issues, but instead is needed externally, to put myself out there and develop a thicker skin and a bolder countenance.

The contrast of fire and water can be either a help or a hindrance. Today, I see the combination as a burst of steam, emanating from a Bunsen burner. The internal heat is powering and charging the water, giving it life and allowing me to spread my influence farther than I typically could with either element alone.

I’ll be able to give more details about upcoming events in a short while. I hope your 2012 is a great one. Stay tuned!

Ask most people “What is tarot?” and you’ll likely get the same answer: 78 cards, divided into the Major and Minor Arcanas, most likely originating in Europe in the 1400s, give or take. As accurate as that is, it doesn’t address the heart of the question. People want to understand what makes tarot so special, and what makes tarot reading so accurate.

Tarot Symbology

The primary thing that makes tarot so engaging to me is the symbols contained within each card. Tarot is a pictorial language, designed to evoke an emotional response immediately. It’s the reason that even the uninitiated cringe at the sight of the Devil or the Tower. The images speak to us at a subconscious level, capturing our imagination and telling us what we need to know, regardless of the situation.

Depending on who you talk to, this image recognition can be explained spiritually or scientifically. Tarot covers the breadth of human experience, and this leads many people to believe that God, Goddess, or the Universe plays a role in the way tarot works. We’re led to draw these cards, at this very moment. We see what we need to see.

Others believe that science and probability play a role. Jung did a huge amount of research into human personality, and so much of it can relate to tarot. Others simply look at the numbers. 78 cards, in an endless amount of possible combinations. Add in reversals and tarot is a never-ending world of possibilities, ready to touch those who are ready to look and listen.

No matter what you believe, the mystery is all part of the fun of tarot and tarot reading.

Tarot and the Occult

Besides the meaning of the images that we naturally identify with, many others have influenced the tarot decks we see today. Nearly all decks (with the exception of the Marseilles decks) in production today have their roots in the Golden Dawn. Both Arthur Waite (creator of the Rider Waite Smith deck) and Aleister Crowley (creator of the Thoth deck) started off in the Golden Dawn, but their decks are very different. Most modern decks are influenced by the symbols and meanings drawn from those two tarot decks.

Their work included astrological, numerological, and magickal associations with each tarot card. Modern tarot deck artists of different spiritual backgrounds have added even more associations, including spirit guides, runes, and pagan holidays.

The Meaning of Tarot

Tarot is full of meaning, as much the inherent meaning as the meaning we put into it. If the King of Cups reminds you of your ex, then you will naturally be cautious when that card appears. Once you get a hold of what the symbols mean, and what the cards can mean, you are free to explore what those symbols mean to you personally. Tarot is an interactive story, where your life experience and knowledge plays an important part in gleaning meaning from the tarot cards.

What does tarot mean to you? How would you explain the tarot to others?

The Sun has been the focal point of many religions over the course of history, and with good reason. It is the life bringer, the one who coaxes plants out of the ground, the one who dictates when we awake and when our daily work is done. Its relative presence or absence dictates the seasons of our lives, and when it returns to where it was at the time of our birth, we celebrate another year of life. It is life force, unbridled energy, nuclear fusion in its most raw, primal form.

The Sun provides warmth and light. Its warmth protects us, nurtures us, allows us to grow and flourish. With it we can create new branches in our lives, or expand current ones. The Sun gives us energy and strength, and we can go forth in confidence and enthusiasm. Its light allows us to see our way, to build our dreams into reality, to study new intellectual heights. We can appreciate nature’s beauty and splendor, because it is before us, no longer hidden by the shadows of the night.

I most definitely need this energy and strength! All four members of my family, myself included, are attending school now. With assignments and appointments and preparation, I will be busier than ever. I welcome the Sun’s energy in my life, and hope that I can push myself farther and with more self-assurance. My endeavors will allow growth now, and in the future. I just need to ride the wave of the Sun’s current, pulsating through my life.

The Six of Pentacles is the bane of my existence, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned. It is about giving and receiving, and often appears when I’m juggling bills and other financial obligations. Usually it is a day of struggle, but today has actually been fairly balanced. I’m finally getting a handle on how much of myself I can give now, and how much I need to apply to future endeavors. Invest energy for the now, invest energy for later.

However, the Wildwood Tarot has brought an entirely new perspective on the six of pentacles for me. It is titled Exploitation, and highlights how our choices in the present can cause havoc for future generations. Our use or misuse of our current resources can leave a big mess for our children. Although this is a rather high world view, this can easily be applied to day to day activities. If I’m not getting enough work done, then I won’t be able to give my children everything they need. If I’m not working on my long term writing projects, I’ll never be able to earn an income off of them later on. If I don’t study now, I won’t succeed in college overall.

As I finally begin to get a grip on work/life balance, I am presented with the challenge to balance my short term and long term goals. It is so hard to give myself the space to breathe and work on things that matter to me. I worry so often about the day to day bills. However, time and energy invested wisely will pay great dividends in the future.
