Just a note to let everyone know what I am working on...can we say E-Books? Sure you can!

It seems that people are wanting to download a short, mini booklet for summer reading on their PDA. I can't say that I blame them! What exactly is an e-book? it's a short book that is downloaded from the internet directly on to your pc or PDA. photography, text boxes, and other eye-catching clip art is added to guide the reader to pick up on the important elements of the material.

Economy is BUMMED but Ghostwriting is BOOMING

Yes, it's true. For some reason, when the economy tanks, more and more people are looking to have their memoirs written or the "Great American Novel." In any event, that spells good news for writers everywhere.

In just one week, I have had 2 huge opportunities present themselves to me. And, if all goes as I hope, I will land these 2 accounts. But, it's not just people wanting memoirs or books written. There are companies and business executives that are losing valuable staff writers to revamp or create handbooks, speeches, commentary, articles, academic papers and so on. But, I am loving it. I'm writing very interesting books for clients and now my load is starting to lighten. So, you know the drill....I'll be looking for another project soon.

I am so lucky. I mean it.

I do what I absolutely adore for a living and get paid for doing it. I also work for some really interesting and nice clients.

Last week I was in the midst of a really nasty flu. I mean it was NASTY. I felt dehydrated and out of my head for awhile I was so sick. I'm sure you have been there at one time or another, right?

Well, I was trying to finish up a memoir for a client and I mentioned my ailments and badda bing, badda boom. The client sends me flowers.

How freaking cool is that?

There are so many sites in Cyberspace that I'm sure it's difficult to name just one. However, I have found if you are wanting to network for business purposes, the best one out there is "Linked In".

It's a professional site where you may input your resume, your desired method of contact and acquaintances, co-workers and friends as your networking group. In turn, those people's friends and co-workers etc., become linked to you as well.

As you can imagine, your list can grow rather quickly and the possibilities are endless. In fact, Good Morning America is the program that introduced this site.

For some ghostwriters, I'm sure the mere mention of "The Client" would encourage a roll of the eyes and a grumble.

Me? I can honestly say that I have enjoyed working with everyone one of my clients. Even those who have been a bit of a challenge to work with. I can say quite honestly that there have only been perhaps 1 or 2 "challenging" clients I've worked with so far. The rest have been great. I love working with people who are excited about a project, who question me thoroughly about my process and so forth. Really....I swear! It shows me that they are interested in putting forth the best effort, and that is the only kind to put out there in my mind.

When I have an old client call or email me, it thrills me. Why? Because it means I did a good job for them and they feel comfortable calling or asking questions. It means we connected and created a great product.

It means I lived up to my grandmother's mantra: "Anything worth doing is worth doing well"

Believe me, if I didn't do my job, my clients wouldn't return. And, the fact that I can stay in business doing what I love says one thing: "The Proof is in the Pudding."

Thumbsignings

After reading the title to this post, you're probably uttering the word, HUH?

As most of you know, Jason Walker and I co-wrote his memoirs entitled, "Missing My Body". Well, after loading the book on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com, I really haven't had time to do much within the promotion scheme of things.

Well, enter Full Circle Admin Services! 2 Associates with Full Circle have taken it to their hearts to promote the heck out of this book for Jason. For those of you that don't know the circumstances:

Jason has a rare form of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and is a quadreplegic. My friend plans to have booksignings for him at some bookstores. However, Jason gently reminded me he can't sign his books. His Mom, Linda Walker came up with the great idea of having him do thumbprints on the books! She would simply ink his thumb as people line up for his "signature".

"Bidding" on Freelance Writing Jobs

Ok, I'm about to step onto my soap box....you don't mind if I use you to steady myself, do you? Ok, step, step. I'm firmly planted on my soapbox. Deep breath.

How many writers in virtual land are camping out at "certain" sites where you pay a small membership fee and bid for freelancing gigs? Uh huh. Just what I thought. More of you than you care to admit.

First of all, I have heard stories from various people saying that they have had good luck with these type sites. If that is the case with you, then I applaud your efforts. For most everyone else that I know of, I have to say that nothing grinds my patience than to have writers or anyone for that matter trying to "underbid" the other in hopes of getting a job.

Granted, this type of competitive underbidding is great for the person who is paying for the service. However, does paying the lowest price for a service mean you will be getting quality writing? Sometimes yes and most of the time no. I have no gripe with competition or someone trying to get the most bang for their buck. But take a look at the people bidding on these sites...most are in other countries where English is a second or third language. And, from the looks of the bids, it is painfully obvious.

There's nothing wrong with a little competition, but these sites do nothing but outsource communication services to other countries where more emphasis is put on saving money than the service itself.

Think about it.

Is it all about Dollar and Cents?

Sure, everyone needs to make a living, right? But, maybe someone called you and offered you a GREAT job writing a book of memoirs but the money isn't there. What do you do? You nervously glance at the telephone bill and the electricity bill is sitting in the bill box and isn't going away. Are you being suckered if you do it for a cut rate? Not at all.

If you really want to do this job, do it. Draft an agreement and come up with some creative financing. Instead of getting paid in lump sum payments, try billing your client monthly for a smaller amount. It's more palatable for the client and it's nice to have a little income each month on your end, right? Still not making enough? Consider negotiating for a portion of the royalties of the book. You never know....and if you're instincts are correct, this may pay off handsomely for you in the future.

So take advantage of the great jobs and be creative! That's what being self-employed is all about!

The Power of Blogging - Who Knew?

It's been well-documented that blogging can be a very powerful tool for individuals and businesses. And, if you do a Google search, or use my favorite search engine- Hakia.com and the blogs literally runneth over!

I saw one blog and the links to HR related blogs was astounding. I'm not kidding, some of the blogs were titled: FMLA, Lori HR, The Evil HR Lady, Disability, Benefits, EEOC, Employee Relations, 401(k), and more. Who created all these blogs? Some were by HR folks, and quite a few of them were written by employment attorneys.

It was amazing! Don't get me wrong, the subjects make for very dry reading. BUT, if you are someone who needs to know about these topics, (whether you are embroiled in the middle of an "issue" or someone who does this for a living), it is a GREAT way to establish yourself as an expert.

So what did I do? Yup, I put it in my favorite places and plan to revisit. Do I need to know about these subjects? Not really, but once an HR geek, always an HR geek!

Have you ever thought about writing a book?

I'm sure everyone has at one time or another.

What would be your genre of choice? A philosophical book? thriller/suspense? memoirs?

There are countless categories to consider and writing a certain genre' depends upon your interest in the subject. What if you have an idea for a GREAT novel and you just don't have the gift for creating a book? Should you immediately sigh in frustration and mutter to yourself, What was I thinking? Absolutely not.

Try hiring a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter is someone that will write your book for you. It usually works a bit like this: The client contacts a ghostwriter and discusses the project. If the project resonates with the ghostwriter, contracts are drawn and they are paid a certain amount of money to write the book. Once they are complete writing the book, that is the end of your ghostwriter.

For the client, this means that you retain all rights to the book. The ghostwriter agrees to be paid in lieu of recognition as author or writer. So, the client has their name listed as the author of the book and publication ensues.

As most visitors to my blog are aware, I am a ghostwriter myself and enjoy the process immensely. At this moment, I am waiting for a really great project to plop in my lap. But, that is the life of ghosting!

Why Fourth Quarter is a Pain for HR Professionals

So, what is the significance of 4th quarter and Human Resources?

Just Call Me A Refugee from Corporate America...

Had an interviewer ask me the other day if I've always written for a living. God, I wish I did, but as most people, I did the "right things". I went to college, got a degree (it's useless in my field however) and went off to war in the fields of beige cubicles, carrying my knapsack full of acronyms and allegiance with plenty of rations of "CYA".

I strategized in conference rooms and spewed the buzz words that became so popular. I created my career pathing, set goals for myself, volunteered for projects and watched the clock tick the minutes off achingly slow. And then, the heavens opened, the shackles came off and an epiphany came to me: I can control my own destiny. I am in charge of myself and my career. If I want to write for a living, it is possible.

I felt if I had spent a power weekend with Dr. Wayne Dyer. I mantraed, I echoed the "I'm Okay, You're Okay" and searched the skies for a sign.

A Feeling of Accomplishment

I feel truly blessed to be a part of a book where the story is so powerful, it brings me to tears each time I read it. I worked my tail off this past week or so finishing up the book, getting it printed and so forth so that it could be shopped in Beijing, China at the international book fair.

And, I have started a new blog which are commonly known as "Hubs" on this site. So, I have been trying to get those in before the month is up as well as juggling all the other 101 things a writer must do. I feel strangely sad to have wrapped up this project, but I know it will be an ongoing pet project for me as a writer's marketing is never done, can I get an Amen on that?

A New Slant in My Writing Services

It's funny, sometimes the obvious can hit you right in the middle of your face and until someone points it out, you don't really notice it.

I was chatting with my writing partner who happens to live in Beijing, China and he mentioned that he was trying to steer business my way. You gotta love that Alan Solomon!

Anyway, he typed in an instant message last night the following:

..."I have a couple of mates that look like they will be interested in your services..."

My Response:

..."Ghostwriting? Articles? what do you think they are interested in?"

Alan's Response:

..."You know, what you do best. Creating those Book trailers, Book Doctoring and Book Promotion."

I stopped tippity tapping on my keyboard and stared at the screen. Sure, I created a Book Trailer for our novel and have been promoting "The Mango Tree Cafe, Loi Kroh Road" like crazy, but I did it because it is OUR novel.

Then it hit me, many people that approach me to ghost for them don't have the experise of marketing themselves nor the patience or program to make Book Trailers. I realized that I just might be really good at the Trailers when I began to get so many positive comments from people stating how powerful the images, music and written text, etc. was on The Mango Tree Cafe trailer.

So good, that a writing colleague of mine who I respect a great deal scrapped her existing trailer and hired me to create one for her newest book.

Book Trailers - From Novelist to Steven Spielberg

I just recently have been introduced to the idea of "book trailers" which equates to producing a short film that advertises a newly published book, or in my case, I newly co-authored book that I am working feverishly to get published.

It's the strangest thing...I thought getting a brand new laptop with all these extra programs was really a waste of money for a writer.
