The Chilean volcano which erupted on Monday has sent a towering plume of ash across South America, forcing thousands from their homes, grounding airline flights in southern Argentina and coating ski resorts with a gritty layer of dust instead of snow.

Booming explosions echoed across the Andes as toxic gases belched up from a three-mile-long fissure in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex - a ridge between two craters just west of the Chilean-Argentine border that began erupting Saturday.

Winds blew a six-mile high cloud of ash all the way to the Atlantic Ocean and even into southern Buenos Aires province, hundreds of miles to the north-east.

Authorities in Chile went house to house, trying to persuade stragglers near the volcano to evacuate because of an increasing danger of toxic gas and flash floods.

Winds fanned the ash toward neighbouring Argentina, darkening the sky in the ski resort city of San Carlos de Bariloche, in the centre of the country, and its airport has also been closed.

The eruption in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain, about 575 miles south of the capital, Santiago, also prompted authorities to close a busy border crossing into Argentina.

It was not immediately clear which of the chain's four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960.

Local media said the smell of sulphur hung in the air and there was constant seismic activity.
'The Cordon Caulle (volcanic range) has entered an eruptive process, with an explosion resulting in a 10-kilometre-high gas column,' the state emergency office ONEMI said.

As a precaution, the government said it was evacuating 3,500 people from the surrounding area.

This development is the latest volcanic activity to affect the country. Three years ago, Chile's Chaiten volcano erupted spectacularly for the first time in thousands of years, spewing molten rock and a vast cloud of ash that reached the stratosphere and was visible from space.

It also drifted over neighbouring Argentina, coating towns. Chile's Llaima volcano, one of South America's most active, also erupted that year and again in 2009.

Chile's chain of about 2,000 volcanoes is the world's second largest after Indonesia. Some 50 to 60 are on record as having erupted, and 500 are potentially active.

The most obvious change is the loss of the Twin Towers and the creation of a new building, finally progressing up after years of delay..

The under-construction One World Trade Center can be seen standing over the National September 11th Memorial and Museum in lower Manhattan ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks next month.
The 9/11 memorial features two reflecting pools on the footprints of the twin towers and it is scheduled to be dedicated on September 11 this year.

Its designer Michael Arad wants the memorial, surrounded by 400 oak trees, to be somewhere for New Yorkers to come together - and described the area as a 'scar'.

It's hoped the memorial will finally bring some peace to the families of 9/11 victims, who will be able to visit from the 10th anniversary next month.

'My Michael is home finally,' Monica Iken Murphy, 41, told the New York Daily News, of her dead husband Michael Murphy. 'They're all home.'
The memorial will then be open to the public on September 12, but visitors need to make reservations in advance because of the construction work.
The museum is set to open on the 9/11 anniversary next year.

The foundation of World Trade Center 2 and 3 has been completed and the buildings are now at around street level.

One World Trade Center is at 80 floors and 4 World Trade Center is up to 48 of 72 floors, reported the New York Daily News.

To those who appreciate engineering projects, here's a puzzle for your armchair engineers and physicists.

Question:

Did that bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?

Answer:

It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water!

Why?

A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship, regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded. Six years, 500 million Euros, 918 meters long . . . now, this is engineering!

This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany ,
as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg , near Berlin .

The Incredible Magdeburg Water   Bridge in Germany The Magdeburg Water Bridge is a navigable aqueduct in Germany that connects the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal , and allows ships to cross over the Elbe River At 918 meters, it is the longest navigable aqueduct in the world.
The Elbe-Havel and Mittelland canals had previously met near Magdeburg but on opposite sides of the Elbe . Ships moving between the two had to make a 12-kilometer detour, descending from the Mittelland Canal through the Rothensee boat lift into the Elbe, then sailing downstream on the river, before entering the Elbe-Havel Canal through Niegripp lock. Low water levels in the Elbe often prevented fully laden canal barges from making this crossing, requiring time-consuming off-loading of cargo.

Construction of the water link was started as early as in the 1930s but due to the World War 2 and subsequent division of Germany the work remained suspended till 1997. The aqueduct was finally completed and opened to the public in 2003.was finally completed and opened to the public in 2003.

The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Google has embarked on its latest Street View project: mapping the Amazon, the world's biggest rainforest, in South America.

SAF, a non-profit group, works to promote social, economic and environmental awareness of the Amazon and its indigenous inhabitants - the cultures of whom have been largely inaccessible to the rest of the world.

'Soon, you'll be able to float down the Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers of northwest Brazil and experience some of the most remote and biodiverse areas in the world,' reads the blog post.
'In the first phase of the project, the Google and FAS teams will visit and capture imagery from a 50km section of the Rio Negro River, extending from the Tumbira community near Manaus - the capital of the state of Amazonas - to the Terra Preta community.

'We'll then process the imagery of the river and the communities as usual, stitching the still photos into 360-degree panoramics.'

China has opened the world's longest cross-sea bridge - which stretches five miles further than the distance between Dover and Calais .
The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26.4 miles long and links China's eastern port city of Qingdao to the offshore island Huangdao.
The road bridge, which is 110ft wide and is the longest of its kind, cost nearly £1billion to build.

Chinese TV reports said the bridge passed construction appraisals on Monday and it, along with an undersea tunnel, would be opened for traffic today.

It took four years to build the bridge, which is supported by more than 5,000 pillars across the bay, and it is almost three miles longer than the previous record-holder - the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana .

Lengthy: The bridge stretches into the distance further than the eye can see and right, the first few cars roll out across the surface

After linking the two ends of the bridge on December 22, one engineer said: 'The computer models and calculations are all very well but you can't relax until the two sides are bolted together.

Set to be completed in 2016, officials said the £6.5billion bridge will span nearly 30 miles.
It will be designed to cope with earthquakes up to magnitude 8.0, strong typhoons and the impact of a 300,000 tonne vessel.
But both structures will still be dwarfed by the longest bridge in the world, also in China .
The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is an astonishing 102 miles in length.
