Taste History Culinary Tours in Boynton Beach and Delray Beach will have you feeling like a local as you explore the two cities through both their culinary and art scene.

We love taking tours with Taste History Culinary Tours because they always offer more than the typical food tour; they also include stops at art galleries and other significant cultural areas in the city. This combination leaves you feeling like you really got to know the true essence of the city you visited.

This was actually our third tour with Taste History (our first tour was through West Palm Beach and our second was through Lake Worth and Lantana). We were excited to get to know this area of South Florida because, although we worked in Delray Beach, we had never taken the time to explore it.

As always, we were greeted by Lori’s big and welcoming smile. Lori Durante is the mastermind behind Taste History Culinary Tours and over the last few years she has created these amazing tours that combine local history, emerging art, and food from family owned eateries.

Effective January 1, 2017, $50 per person is the new rate for the tours traveling to Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and Lantana; and West Palm Beach. Free for children under age 14 (children must be accompanied by a paid adult family member). Children age 14 and over pay regular price. Due to the increased operational costs and insurance an increase in our tour fees is necessary. Pre-paid reservations that have been made prior to that date will not be affected. Taste History is a non-profit educational organization. Fees are inclusive of all food and visits to cultural centers and art galleries.

I am a huge fan of food tours. And history. And art. Combine all three and you have a trifecta: The Taste History Culinary Tour. Located in Palm Beach County (South Florida), this six-year-old food tour in South Florida offers three different established tours to choose from, in West Palm Beach, Delray & Boynton, and Lake Worth & Lantana. The tours run each Saturday and are 3-4 hours in length.

On my visit, which I scheduled weeks in advance because they sell out, I did the Lake Worth & West Palm Beach itinerary. My friend Griffin accompanied me. Tasting the local flavors of the Palm Beach areas was a delight.

Debutantes learn Flavor of Art, Food, History during Career, Culture, Beauty Weekend 2017

On Saturday, February 25, 2017 a Taste History Culinary Tour to West Palm Beach, Lantana and Delray Beach was held for African American debutantes of the Frances J. Woman’s Club. The cultural tour traveled to Sweet's Sensational Jamaican Cafe in Delray Beach; Mother Earth at the Delray Beach Green Market; Cafe Sweets Bakery in Downtown West Palm Beach; Shipping Container Mural Art in Northwood Village and the Cheese & Wine Cafe in Town of Lantana.

The striving teenagers learned about the heritage of the cities and districts visited; they met local and women business owners and visited an emerging arts district. This was the third annual Taste History Culinary Tour hosted for the debutante program. It was the first time the debutantes in this year’s program experienced a culinary, arts and history tour. The tour was part of a two-day Career, Culture and Beauty weekend presented by the non-profit Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History that included a Career Day with speakers representing creative and design industries. The speakers were architect Cynthia Spray; interior designer Angela Colley; and Kathy Franks, Vice President with the Macy's corporation. Combining both the tour and career day, the students learned about careers in art, the restaurant industry, architecture, interior design and retail. Thanks to the program sponsors, the entire weekend was underwritten for the debutantes.

The debutantes live and attend high school in Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Greenacres, Lake Worth and West Palm Beach.

The Frances J. Bright Woman's Club (FJBWC) was established in 1958 by the namesake African American educator in Delray Beach, Florida who came to Palm Beach County more than 100 years ago in 1895 to teach at the 'colored' school #4. The leaders of this prestigious organization are esteemed African American educators and business owners, the black elite. The mission of FJBWC is to help provide etiquette training for African American high school girls who are invited into the program based on academics and good character. The program also helps to raise scholarship monies for the young ladies.

BOYNTON BEACH — Palermo’s Bakery is delicious. I went there for the first time this past weekend.

Cannolis. Sugar cookies. Rainbow cookies. Rum balls. You name it.

It was one of the Boynton Beach stops on Lori Durante’s Taste History Culinary Tours. I had heard of the tour before, and have seen the news releases, but never went until my colleague Lulu Ramadan, the Post’s Delray Beach reporter, asked if I wanted to go.

I said sure, but honestly, there was a bit of hesitation. It’s between three and four hours long. That’s a long time, I thought. And on a Saturday?

But I quickly learned this history, food and arts tour is one of the best ways to spend your Saturday.

We all met Saturday at the Boynton Beach Mall and boarded a bus that fit the 20 of us. It was a sold-out event. First we hit the Delray Beach spots: Sweet’s Sensational Jamaican Cuisine Café; Cabana El Rey and The French Bakery.Then we hit the Boynton spots: Palermo’s; Hurricane Alley Raw Bar and Restaurant; the Avenue of the Arts District and the Boynton Beach Industrial Arts District. All restaurants are family owned.

You won’t find a friendlier business owner than Sweet. Cabana El Rey has delicious food, especially the guacamole. The French Bakery has amazing focaccia bread. I fell in love with Hurricane’s pasta salad and seafood bisque. I could stare at the murals of art on Industrial Avenue all day.Lori J. Durante has been nominated for the Glass Ceiling Award by the South Palm Beach County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Among her achievements is the establishment of the Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Palm Beach County.

The Delray/Boynton tour was the first of the fall 2016 season. Taste History is the first culinary tour in Palm Beach County, and the nonprofit was started in 2011. The tours rotate trips to West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Lantana, Delray and Boynton. The next tour is Saturday in West Palm Beach and Lake Worth.

DELRAY BEACH — Did you know Atlantic Avenue was once called Sundy Highway, named after Delray Beach’s first mayor, John Shaw Sundy? Or that Cabana El Rey on Atlantic Avenue is a family-owned restaurant?

I started covering Delray Beach about two months ago, and I think I learned more about the city in one three-hour food, art and history tour than in two months roaming this village.

The Palm Beach Post’s Alex Seltzer, who covers Boynton Beach, and I signed up for a Taste History Culinary Tour of Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, guided by Lori Durante, a prolific source of knowledge about Palm Beach County.

Taste History is Durante’s brainchild, a cultural culinary tour that takes you by air-conditioned bus to different family-owned restaurants, art districts and other local hotspots. She started the tour five years ago covering just Delray Beach, but has since expanded to cover Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and West Palm Beach.

Each tour, which is once a month in each city, is $65.

On Saturday, we joined Durante and a group of about 18 others on a tour of Delray and Boynton, with Durante narrating the long histories of each city as our bus traveled the length of the tour. Each tour is unique, as Durante chooses different family-owned eateries and art destinations each month.

I learned a great deal about my city, and met the unique people behind some popular southern Palm Beach County destinations.

Here are some of my highlights:

Delray doesn’t end at Swinton. There’s a rich history behind the Swinton Avenue divide. This roadway once separated the white and African-American neighborhoods during the era of segregation. Now, the west portion of the city is rich with Floribbean — Florida mingled with Carribbean — cuisine and preserved African-American history, like the Spady Museum, the former home of Solomon D. Spady, a well-known educator and community leader.

There are still family-owned destinations, despite recent growth. I often hear complaints that over-development in Delray has forced out some beloved, longtime shops and restaurants. But there are new ones popping up often, like The French Bakery on Federal Highway near George Bush Boulevard. Not only is this bakery, which opened this past summer, family-owned, but it uses mostly locally sourced ingredients and sells goods from other local businesses, likeThe Delray Beach Jam Company.We visited Sweet’s Sensational Jamaican cuisine, on Southwest 5th Avenue at Atlantic Avenue. Ivet Durrant opened the small eatery three years ago, making traditional Jamaican foods from scratch every morning.

We visited The French Bakery on the tour, as well as Cabana El Rey, a family-owned chain that blends foods from several Latin American cultures, mimicking the cultural makeup of Florida.

The Debutantes' Cuisine, Culture, Career and Beauty Weekend 2016

A Spring season Taste History Culinary Tour hosted 20 debutantes plus board members of the Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club. The tour kicked-off a two-day second annual Career, Culture & Beauty Weekend for the group. Their Taste History Culinary Tour traveled to Lake Worth and Lantana featuring 7 eateries, local art shops, a historic building and the Lake WorthLULA Arts District. The tour was hosted at Mother Earth Sanctuary Café, the Lake Worth Art League Gallery, The Taco Lady, The Java Juice Bar, Artisans on the Ave Gallery, Brogues Downunder, Hoffman's Chocolates, Mama Gizzi and the Cheese & Wine Café.

The Career, Culture & Beauty weekend was created especially for the debutantes. The weekend is chaired and organized by Lori J. Durante of the non-profit Taste History Culinary Tour program. The second day of the program on was held at Macy’s Boynton Beach and featured speakers in the areas of architecture, interior design and retail. The objective of the weekend is to expose the striving college-bound ladies to new cultural foods, emerging artists, other Florida history and unique careers. The Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club (FJBWC) was established in 1958 by the namesake African American educator in Delray Beach, Florida. The leaders of this prestigious organization are esteemed African American educators and business owners, the black elite. The mission of FJBWC is to help provide etiquette training for African American high school girls who are invited into the program based on academics and good character. The program also helps to raise scholarship monies for the young ladies. The Debutantes in Class of 2016 are from Coconut Creek, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, Palm Springs, Royal Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. They are all honor roll students who graduated from Atlantic Community High School, Boca Raton Community High School, Florida Atlantic University High School, Olympic Heights High School, Palm Beach Gardens High School, Palm Beach Lakes Community High School, Royal Palm Beach High School, William T. Dwyer High School, Santaluces High School and Village Academy High School.

Effective February 1, 2015, $45 per person is the new rate for the tours traveling to Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and Lantana. The new rate for the West Palm Beach/Northwood Village tour is $50 per person. Free for children under age 14 (children must be accompanied by a paid adult family member). Children age 14 and over pay regular price. Due to the increase in fees that are charged to our organization for the tour bus rental and insurance; an increase in our tour fees is necessary. Pre-paid reservations that have been made prior to that date will not be affected. Taste History is a non-profit educational organization. Fees are inclusive of all food and visits to cultural centers and art galleries.

Macy's Boynton Beach hosts 2016 Spring Reception featuring Taste History's Restaurant Partners

Macy's Boynton Beach and Taste History Culinary Tours partnered in 2016 to present the Spring Affair VIP Private Reception. The fun morning at Macy's featured make-overs, fashion presentations and buffet brunch provided by Taste History partners Don Che Argentine and Italian Bistro and Brogues Down Under.

More than 100 people attended who enjoyed the private shopping, complimentary make-covers, wardrobe show and a hearty brunch. High school students from South Tech Culinary Tour Academy assisted the chefs.

Trinity Lutheran students take a tour of the senses

When the Trinity Lutheran School first-graders caught sight of the oversized musical swing set, they raced across the downtown West Palm Beach lot, seized the brightly colored seats and clambered on. The higher they flew, the more peals of laughter and melodic notes filled the air.
"Look how high we're going," sang out 6-year-old Charlotte Woolley, sharing a green swing with classmate Maddie Rocha, also 6. "And listen! I hear a piano!"

The Musical Swings, a large musical installation on Clematis Street surrounded by vivid murals, was the first stop on the school's recent Three Senses Field Trip. It was created for the young Delray Beach students by Lori Durante as part of her Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Palm Beach County.

Durante's tours combine food tastings at bakeries and eateries, with visits to cultural and historical districts. For these youngsters, she combined The Musical Swings and then cannoli-making at Palermo's Bakery in Boynton Beach. Her Three Senses Field Trip touched on the sense of sound, as well as sight and taste.

"Visiting The Musical Swings is a vibrant and enlightening experience for the first-graders," said Executive Tour Director Durante, who incorporated local history, music, mural art and even a gravity lesson in the day trip. "It's a thinking-outside-the-box field trip."

Created by the Montreal-based studio Daily tous les jours, the traveling installation made its first U.S. tour stop on Clematis Street. The swings have since moved on to Detroit.

Durante and West Palm Beach's Art in Public Places Program director Sybille Welter held the students' attention as they described how the swing responds to motion with music. Each swing emits the notes of a guitar, a piano, a vibraphone or a harp.

"The higher you go, you'll hear all the musical notes," Welter said. "And if you swing together and collaborate, you can make beautiful harmony together."

Delray Beach parent Tiffany Woolley agreed that the swinging session was therapeutic for everyone.

"It's so peaceful, so artistic," she said. "To feel it and hear it is to believe it."

Jagger Jaspert, 7, said he had been looking forward to the musical swings and was not disappointed.

"I thought it was going to be like a regular playground, so when I saw this…wow! I just had to get on a swing immediately," he said. "And then I heard the sounds and it's like peace music. I'm amazed."

Then it was on to Palermo's Bakery, where a lesson in cannoli-making awaited. The first-graders donned handmade tall, white chef's hats and even brought one for bakery owner Anna Orlando.

Palermo's Bakery, part of Durante's Taste History's Bakery Trail, was established more than 125 years ago in Sicily, Italy. It's still family-owned and operated by the Palermo-Orlando family.

While Orlando led the students in filling cannoli pastry shells, Durante held up cards reinforcing vocabulary words: Cannoli. Italy. Sicily.

"Food is an essential part of our lives," said Orlando, demonstrating the creation of her homemade ricotta cheese.

Mother Elle Jaspert agreed: "It's a wonderful learning experience outside of the classroom. But the best part? It's delicious."

History, art and cuisine merge in Taste History Culinary Tours

Café Bleu in Downtown Delray Beach is located in the historic 1924 Masonic Lodge Building. Taste History features, on a rotation, Café Bleu.

Culinary tour operator Lori Durante brings the history of Palm Beach County to life, one bite at a time.

Through stops at eateries, local businesses and cultural districts, Durante connects the past with the present. Chefs serve samples of the dishes that illustrate the evolving foodscape. Artists and gallery owners address changes in the arts scene.

Durante's Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Palm Beach County operates in several cities from Delray to West Palm Beach. Buses depart from Macy's at the Boynton Beach Mall to the week's scheduled destination. Once there, folks walk to a minimum of three to four tastings and other various cultural sites.

Each tour is unique, and the stops rotate like museum exhibits. Durante draws on years of experience as the founder of the nonprofit Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History, which puts on the tours (it currently operates without a gallery).
"Some places may reoccur… and new are introduced," Durante said. "As a cultural organization you can't stay the same or the programs can become stagnant."

Restaurants cover the themes of Floribbean, New Cuisine and Bakery Trail in each trip.
Recent stops in Delray included the Bamboo Fire Grill, Dee Dee's Conch & Rib Shack and Marianne Gourmet Shop. Galleries visited were the William DeBilzan and Artists Guild Gallery.
The stop at Café Bleu at 44 E. Atlantic Ave. in Delray is typical.

"It's in the historic Masonic Lodge building that was built in 1924," Durante said. "It's a wonderful combination of being surrounded by the history while you're having a tasting."
Christian Backenstrass, co-owner of Loic Autret French Bakery, enjoys meeting the groups and the atmosphere they bring into his shop, he said in an email.

"We push for the talent of local artisans and family-owned eateries," Durante said. She looks for hidden gems and those off the beaten path to showcase.

Durante started the Taste History Culinary Tours in 2011. The idea sparked as she watched Anthony Bourdain on television exploring countries through food, art and culture. She had been running a historical bus tour since 2004 and decided to start a food-centric excursion.

Her hunch about the rising popularity of food was spot on. The culinary tours have expanded to nearly every Saturday. As new cities are added, they've sold out for months in advance.
In 2014, a Huffington Post reviewer said the "tasty tour" was "chock full of Florida History." This fall, USA Today listed it as a"10 Best" attraction in West Palm Beach. Viva Florida, the state's heritage campaign, enlisted Taste History as a partner.

"You taste food, you taste art, you taste history," Durante said.
