FOX Chicago News featured Gluten-Free diets that are apparently being tried by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Zooey Deschanel, Lady Gaga and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Chicago Bulls player Kyle Korver told Men's Health Magazine a gluten-free diet has boosted his performance, and made him healthier.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck actually is required to eat a gluten-free diet because she suffers from celiac disease, often celiac sprue), which is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that occurs in genetically predisposed people of all ages from middle infancy onward. Celiac disease is associated with anemia, and malabsorption of vitamins and minerals.

Even people without celiac disease can experience allergic-like reactions from gluten, such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, pain, or diarrhea; or it may present with a variety of extraintestinal symptoms including headaches and migraines, lethargy and tiredness, attention-deficit disorder and hyperactivity, autism and schizophrenia, muscular disturbances as well as bone and joint pain. Gluten sensitivity is thought to affect approximately 6% of the general population. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley.

FOX Chicago News interviews Jen Cafferty, author of gluten-free blog (gfreelife.com), which includes recipes and entree information for various meals of the day; and Chef Ryan Hutmacher (centeredchef.com), who cooks for athletes, and teaches them how to cook for themselves at home. See the video for a tasty looking quinoa pilaf with roasted butternut squash.

Third party report from the Washington Examiner Yeas & Nays column: First lady Michelle Obama an evening out with seven friends at Co Co. Sala on F Street on Monday night, November 28, 2011. The dinner featured an edible chocolate sculpture and house-made artisanal chocolates by Chef Santosh Tiptur. According to sources, Michelle Obama's favorite was Chef Tiptur's Moroccan Swordfish Sliders with chermoula marinade, fennel salad, aged pecorino and hazelnut coffee dressing.

Chermoula is a marinade used in Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian cooking -- usually used to flavor fish or seafood, but it can be used on other meats or vegetables.
The Food Network 2011 New York Wine and Food Festival was held from September 29 - October 2, 2011.

The fourth annual Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival presented by Food & Wine is hosted by and benefits the Food Bank For New York City, fighting hunger in the five boroughs; and Share Our Strength®, a national nonprofit working to end childhood hunger in America.

In 2010, the Festival raised more than $1.2 million for these charities, helping them better provide for those they serve and closing the gap on hunger in our country.

The Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival presented by Food & Wine began as a one-night event, SWEET, in the fall of 2007. In 2008, Festival Founder and Director Lee Brian Schrager of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, launched the inaugural Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival.

The first annual Festival consisted of more than 80 events. The second and third annual Festivals in 2009 and 2010 grew to more than 120 events held throughout the Meatpacking District and beyond. Festival events ranged from extravagant walk-around tastings like the Burger Bash, SWEET and the Grand Tasting, to culinary demonstrations and educational wine and food pairing seminars led by the industry's biggest names, to kids-oriented interactive cooking experiences and, local events incorporating the businesses in the host neighborhood, the Meatpacking District.
Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano has said that up to eighteen stores are planned for Illinois, with one under construction next to the new Palatine Police Department Headquarters on the former Kmart location, just north of Northwest Highway and Hicks Road.
Ground Beef Recall After E. coli Detection

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. has recalled about 131,300 pounds of ground beef that was distributed in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin and other states; and is possibly contaminated with E. coli -- an organism with certain strains that can cause food poisoning.

The ground beef products being recalled include Kroger-brand ground beef; Butcher's Brand beef and generic label beef, which were all packaged August 23, 2011.

The generic beef was distributed in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

The Kroger beef was distributed in Tennessee and Indiana.

The Butcher's beef was distributed in North and South Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the problem Wednesday when Ohio health authorities reported a family in Butler County became ill with E. coli. Ground beef in the family's home tested positive for the bacteria.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine. Most E. coli strains are harmless, but some serotypes can cause serious food poisoning in humans, and are occasionally responsible for product recalls.

Ironically, harmless strains are part of the normal flora of the gut, and can benefit their hosts by producing vitamin K2,and by preventing the establishment of pathogenic bacteria within the intestine.

The following products are recalled:

5-pound packages of Kroger-brand ground beef packed in 40-pound cases, with a product code of D-0211 QW, which was distributed in Tennessee and Indiana

3-pound packages of Butcher's Brand beef packed in 36-pound cases with the code D-0211 LWIF, which was distributed in North and South Carolina

3-pound packages of generic labeled beef packed in 36-pound cases with a product code D-0211 LWI, which was sold in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

The ground beef had a "best before" date of September 12 and the label number 245D inked on the packages. The beef had a 73/27 lean-to-fat ratio,

The ground beef was distributed to The Kroger Co., Food Lion, Inc.; SAV-A-LOT, Spectrum Foods, Inc., Supervalu and the Defense Commissary Agency.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – (September 22, 2011) – Caribou Coffee, the nation’s second-largest coffeehouse operator, today announced the opening of a new store located at 115 West Rand Road in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

“We’re thrilled to open up a new store in the Arlington Heights area,” said Dean Torrenga, director of operations for Caribou Coffee. “We chose Arlington Heights as one of the new locations because the community’s characteristics fit well with our brand and offerings. The redevelopment efforts of the nearby downtown and shopping area provide vibrancy and interest, making Arlington Heights a perfect destination for a Caribou Coffee.”

“Here at Caribou we are committed to providing guests with an extraordinary experience every time they visit our store,” said Torrenga. “We pride ourselves on being the community place guests love.”

Interior décor at the Arlington Heights location includes items influenced by the surrounding neighborhood. Throughout the interior, guests will see featured equestrian décor elements, inspired by the nearby Arlington Park Racetrack. The Community Table in each Caribou Coffee will be large enough to seat several individuals, and is designed to foster friendship by bringing guests together in the central hub of the store. The Community Table and Grand Poobah Chair embody the history of Arlington Park, and are meant to catch guests’ attention as they enter the store.

The store also includes a convenient drive-thru.

In 2010, Caribou Coffee introduced a fresh take to their overall brand that stemmed from the reinvention of their tagline – Life is short. Stay awake for it – to signify a positive, seize the day mentality. “This new location, and all stores opening from this point forward, are intended to be more fun and inspirational, while maintaining the comfortable lodge look and feel for which Caribou Coffee is known,” said Torrenga.

While these products have been pulled from the stores, customers are alerted to beware of any product that might have been purchased them before the "Chef's Collection Chicken Milanese" were pulled on Wednesday. Roundy's and Mariano's Fresh Market is advising that customers discard the product and alert the store that the product has been discarded.
Jimmy's Place was known for its hot dogs where students from the former Arlington High School used to come in crowds to eat lunch. Owners Jimmy and Mary Lou Stevens would cook hundreds of hot dogs in preparation for the lunch rush. The closing of Arlington High School hurt sales, but the restaurant managed to survive for 27 years following the closing of Arlington High School.

After their divorce, Jimmy sold the business to Mary Lou. Jimmy recently returned to help Mary Lou run the business.

Many people in town will miss their hot dogs, hamburgers, Italian Beef and bratwursts and fries.

Users will immediately start seeing Zagat’s content integrated in Google searches and Google Maps.

A new version to Google Maps version 5.10.0 now lets users add specific photos to Places and automatically shows places they’ve rated 4 or 5 stars on the map, which gives them a better look at places they’ve enjoyed in the past. Users can place photos of food or decor from a restaurant and attach it to the dining location.

As of 5:30 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2011, the three restaurants with the top percentages of "Like it" ratings on ZAGAT were La Tasca (92%), Wildfish (77%) and Salsa 17 (76%).
Jersey Mike's Subs will officially open its doors in Arlington Heights next week on September 7, 2011. Jersey Mike's owners, John Griparis and Jeff Berns, know the importance of community relations and will celebrate their new ties with the area when they hold their grand opening on September 7. This will be the fifth location that Griparis and Berns have opened in the Chicagoland area. This marks a new addition to the Bakery Cafe Fast Food page of Taste-of-Arlington.com
Owners Celebrate with Free Subs

To commemorate the event, the new restaurant, located at 115 West Rand Road, is hosting a 5-day fundraiser from Wednesday, September 7 through Sunday, September 11, with proceeds supporting Saint Viator High School, St. James Elementary and Sockers FC Youth Foundation. Anyone who has a fundraising coupon can get a free regular sub for a minimum $1 contribution. Coupons are being distributed throughout the community and in local newspapers.

For Griparis and Berns, the choice of supporting the children of the community was never a question. “We cannot forget our youth. We must guide them and help them in anyway possible,” agreed Berns and Griparis. “The fact that we remain true to our roots of giving as much as we get has made the Jersey Mike’s journey truly worthwhile. Just seeing the smiles of hundreds — if not thousands — of people that we made a difference for is what it is all about,” said Griparis. Their charitable spirit is part of the Jersey Mike’s “sub” culture, where a passion for serving the community has always been a priority.

Reaching out to the community is a key component of Jersey Mike’s mission. All franchise owners find ways to support their neighbors and employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents as well. “At Jersey Mike’s, we believe businesses can only reach their potential when they give back to their communities,” said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO. “We congratulate John and Jeff on making a difference in their community and for opening their newest Jersey Mike’s Subs!”

“We are especially excited about the opening of this location in Arlington Heights because it is a tight-knit community with great roots — exactly the type of people we like to get involved with,” said Griparis. This connection to the people in the local communities is an important concept at Jersey Mike’s Subs. “The best part of my job is when I see the same families come in to our restaurants and they know my name, just as I know theirs,” Griparis said.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. You can contact this store directly at 224-735-3437.
Jersey Mike’s, a sub sandwich franchise with more than 500 stores open and under development nationwide, has a long history of community involvement and support. Started at the Jersey Shore in 1956, Jersey Mike’s serves authentic East Coast-style subs on fresh baked bread – the same recipe it started with over 50 years ago. The company’s mission is to bring its customers the highest quality, freshest made sub in the industry and give back to the communities in which it operates. A store locator and franchise information for Jersey Mike’s can be found at www.jerseymikes.com.
Worthy of Protest? Bacon in Chipotle's Pinto Beans

Chipotle news story had a teaser that they were involved in a scandal because they were accused of hiding the fact that they had bacon in their pinto beans. Apparently staff at some stores weren't informing people to avoid the pinto beans if they're a vegetarian.

Even though the website contains information about the bacon in pinto beans, some people felt it necessary to call it a scandal the information wasn't more readily provided locally at the stores

You should avoid our pinto beans (they are cooked with a small amount of bacon) and our meats. If you do eat dairy, our cheese is made with a vegetable-based rennet, and our sour cream is 100% cultured cream.

Some Berkeley students were actually protesting the 'lack of information.'
