After some of our favorite critics called the look of our site, unprofessional, we decided to add some window dressing. Yes I caved and added another image to the site. I strive to keep the image count down. I might in the future reduce it all to one image, but sometimes that can be a pain. Anyway we are got rid of big words that didn't make a bunch of sense, and we are trying some colors. Tell us what you think.

This is the top 500 ranked mp3 blogs according to their TasteStalkr Rank. The dot size indicates the blogs rank, bigger means closer to number 1. All the black lines are links between the blogs. Click to see the whole picture.

How We Do It

Besides all the work we do, we also use a number of tools. We are big supporters of the open source stack. The rights given too us by the various open source licenses, allow us to develop value without the fear that someone can come and take away our tools. It also allows us to modify our stack as we see fit to make sure that our site runs the best it can. Closed source could also be though of as the codifying of a way of doing things. We believe that we should be able to do things the way we want. So, thats we use open source.

Now the stack we use starts with the metal. We don't actually own any metal. We lease some space from the wonderful company Dreamhost. I have used a number of affordable hosting companys, as well as owned my own hosted hardware. Dreamhost does a great job of balancing, my need to be in control, with my need to keep my hosting costs low, for now. I haven't done a whole ton of investigation into what Dreamhost uses for metal but I know they run linux.

On top of linux they run apache. On top of apache we run Django. We can delve farther into Django vs all the others later, but for now we like using mvc software etc, because it affords us a great ability change our minds. We run a mostly stock version of Django.

We use a couple of Django apps. django-registraiton, and django-tagging take over a lot of tedious work that we have written countless times before this, and don't want to write ever again.

On the client side we use jQuery. We also base our css grid system on a neat css librarie Blue Print.

fhew, That is a fairly complete recall of our open source code stack. Thats just the code though, we use a lot of ideas as well behind that scenes and I will talk more about that latter.

Thats the best way to go nowhere. We relized today that our javascript wasn't working in many browsers because many people don't have firebug installed.

As much as we wish everyone was equipped with the most handy web dev tool known to man, except textmate, not all of use are developers. This little mishap showed us a little whole in our testing regimen. We need to do a better job of testing the app in a more stock browser.

Cooking With Gas

Here at TasteStalkr, we enjoy our html, css, and javscript. In the perfect world everything we could want to make could be done using these three. Ultimately we realize that is impossible so that is why we employ a little flash.

You might have wondered what powers our music playing ability, or mayby not. The power behind us is this great tool called soundmanger2. We will talk about our sound playing ability more in the future, but for now, soundmanager takes many of flash's sound capabilties and exports them into javascript. This is awesome for us, because we don't know our flex from our air. Whats missing from soundmanager is all though GUI elements for playing sound.

That is why in the next day or two we are going to launch our fully html, css, and javascript playbar. Thats right now flash in the bar its self. You might say were crazy. We say that in the begging it won't work on all browsers. But we love the fact that we made it happen. So if you like it let us know, if not let us now as well.

We're off the to the races

Thats right, we launched a couple of days ago. I have patiently been waiting for the digg effect, or getting slashdotted. Only that hasn’t happend.

I sent emails out to my friends, they like it. I tried to get in contact with some mp3 bloggers, only one response. Mayby I am just jumping the gun and they are all hiding behind a corner waiting to pounce.

The funny thing is that I am really at this point talking to myself because no one has even subscribed to feed. I am hopeing that at least people might be seeing this on the page.

Anyhow, I am preparing a few articles on our software stack. Those should be up this week at the latest.

Whats This All About

We started this site as an experiment. Alex, the founder, read alot of mp3 bogs. Then one day he found The Hype Machine. It sparked his imagination. We all started talking, what if you tracked all the conversations about music on the web. Thats when we created TasteStalkr.

Our first version or launch is mostly for us. We needed to prove to ourselves that we can do it. Also, now we can start thinking in cycles instead of just trying to launch something. We have many ideas in the pipeline and we will slowly push them into the live site. For now the player works, we think, on most browsers. You can also search through the content we have.

We are really excited that now we can talk about developing our site as well as develop. We are going to try and explain some of the ideas we used in the development, because alot of what we are doing isn't new just remixed.

Lastly , we have written up our guiding ideas. These help us to stay on the track. check it out here.

1. Because We Love It

Our number one reason for making this site. If we’re not having fun, your not having any fun.

2. Remix

We blend great ideas to create something new. Whatever we blend, we will credit it.

3. Open

Currently a misunderstood idea, but we think we get it. Anything you put in, you can get out.
