Alan Doyle from Great Big Sea has his first solo album out shortly – called Boy on Bridge.      When he was a guest last week on Mulligan Stew we took the opportunity to talk wine with him. He has a new partnership with Yellowtail that raises money for the Unison Benevolent Fund. All you have to do to enter is make your wine glass “ping” and when they get all the “pings” received via uTube..they’ll create a song from the tones and make some money. When you’re standing in the midst of a supermarket, it’s hard to imagine that you’re looking at a failing industrial food system. The abundance all around you looks impressive but is really a façade. In fact, there’s just a three-day supply of food available for any given city due to complex, just-in-time international supply chains. The system is not only vulnerable, given the reality of food scares, international crises, terrorist attacks, economic upheavals, and natural disasters, but it is also environmentally unsustainable for the long term. As the cold hard facts of peak oil and peak water begin to have an impact, how will we feed a world population of seven billion and growing, most of whom are now urban dwellers?

One answer is urban agriculture. Food and the City examines alternative food systems in cities around the globe that are shortening their food chains, growing food within their city limits, and taking their “food security” into their own hands.

Gavin Miller finally has his own winery to play with. Called Upper Bench Winery because that’s the road that its on.

The land he bought had been planted for many years but locals never saw any of that wine. It went offshore and that was that.

Gavin has created wines for some of BC’s best – Poplar Grove and recently Painted Rock. Now he has an opportunity to make his own statement and his own wines.

The day finds us on board the Organic Ocean, the mighty Prawn fishing vessel..with Capt Steve Johansen and his crime fighting Chef Robert Clark from C.

No more than 6 years ago most BC prawns were shipped directly to Japan until Steve told his pal Robert that we only saw 2-3% of our own prawns in BC.

Even though they were harvested within sight of Vancouver.

Mr Clark called “Bulls#+t” and the rest is HISTORY.

Today the new haul of BC spot Prawns will arrive at the fishing docks opposite Granville Island at High Noon.

Please come down and enjoy the day..some of Vancouver’s best chefs will be cooking and explaining how important this season is to all of us. Perhaps the most important fact is – it’s a totally sustainable harvest.

These prawns will make their way through the fish stores and restaurants of BC, East to Alberta and beyond..in a celebration of taking back what was always ours .

Mollydooker is Auzzie slang for a left hander

Mollydooker Wines is based in the McLaren Vale Area of Australia. It was founded by Sarah and Sparky Marquis in 2005. Yes… They’re both lefties.

 

Through their self developed watering system they’ve managed to become one of the most successful wineries in all of Australia.

The Mollydooker labels look like Betty Boop cartoons.

Mollydooker has a well earned reputation for producing World Class Wines. These include ‘Two Left Feet’, a shiraz blend and ‘The Boxer’, a Shiraz.

 

 

The 2006 ‘Velvet Glove’ Shiraz was awarded 99 points by Robert Parker. The winery’s ‘Carnival of Love’ shiraz was placed among the top ten wines by Wine Spectator for both the 2006 and 2007 vintages..

Mission Hill Family Estate is the 2011 recipient of the coveted IWSC Trophy as the ‘Canadian Wine Producer of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London, United Kingdom. The award came as a complete surprise to Mission Hill Proprietor Anthony von Mandl who was presented the award in front of 600 international wine luminaries at the historic Guild Hall in London by this year’s IWSC President, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Proprietor of Château Haut-Brion in Bordeaux, France.
