Rancho Nicasio Restaurant and Bar rated by: sfdee

Yup, this place sure is a lot of fun. Went with friends for the Sunday afternoon outdoor barbecue and music-great combination. A pretty low key mixed age crowd sitting in the sun and shade enjoying the food and blues. My barbecue chicken was delicious and I liked the beans, coleslaw, and corn bread go alongs. Very generous portions for the price. Go early to snag a table. That was some messy barbecue chicken and it was a lot easier to eat it at a table than it would've been sitting on a blanket. And the musicians are generous too-we heard 2 nice long sets.

Hallie's Diner rated by: samarati

Located next door to the Petaluma Market, but do not park in their lot when coming to Hallie's - You WILL get busted! The multi-story muni-garage is across the street & it's free. Park the car there. Hallie's is a Petaluma local favorite for breakfast & lunch. It's homey. The decor is clean, bright, and cheery. The people are nice.
The food is okay, certainly better than Denny's, IHOP or a Black Bear Diner. When I need a waffle fix in Petaluma, Hallie's is my first choice. Sometimes you just want something "normal" to eat. That's what Hallie's does best - Nice, normal American food. A full on belly filling breakfast is gonn'a cost you a whole $9.95. Leave a generous tip.

Fresca rated by: kushnir

You know the little man that sits in the chair and jumps for joy when the movie is great, and is missing from the chair when it's bad? He would have been dead on this one! (committed suicide) What should have been a nice meal turned into a should have walked out moment you know in the pit of your stomach you should do it, but for some reason you wait it out! Bad thing to do here! The limp plantain was saturated with almost rancid oil, like (overcooked lasagna noodles). Get the picture yet? The salsa bad, the rice with seafood, bad (unless you like black burnt rice kernels) their continual “twists” on basic South American cuisine lacks direction and a budget to purchase good quality produce. With the service response of “ Oh, the plantains I guess are an acquired taste” leaves me that I wished I had shared with her my extent of South American travels. But why bother, they just don't' give a chalupa about return customers.
Ristorante Fabrizio rated by: kushnir

I wish I could have had at least a somewhat positive experience like Samarati, but not! Mediocre service with bland food didn't help the long wait at a non busy dinner rush. The only positive experience was being able to sit outside on a nice evening. We started with grilled eggplant, you know that firm hard dark purple orb with nice taste & texture most of the time, here it looked like it was grilled hours if not days before and thrown under the salamander prior to service. Mushy, bitter and lack of any hint of fresh herbs or spices started our downhill roller coaster ride. Waiting and waiting we finally got our order of ravioli which were suppose to be in a meat sauce and were allegedly made with some form of meat ? Ok, I guess the sauce is there to overpower any subtle flavors of the filling, right? The evening was summarized when we were presented our check, funny it didn't look like we were a table of 4 with two bottles of wine... Maybe that kinda tells it all.

Houston's Restaurant rated by: Beau_Safken

Its a very good place to eat. I love that its intimate when you are seated, and the whole restaurant is inviting you to relax. A nice tall beer, and a wonderfully cooked rib eye steak made my evening at Houston's complete. Go there with people that you are not trying to impress, but people you love to be with. The place is a little packed at times, but when you are seated you will not notice. visit to read more reviews

I love how there are some random assorted foods on the menu. Sushi and red beans/rice with fried chicken. I really enjoy the southwest chicken hash for breakfast, its spicy but very relaxing to eat. Brunch is the time to go if its your first time.
Le Colonial rated by: Beau_Safken

Le Colonial just screams something French, but its WAY more Vietnamese when you look at the menu. They make a very good mixed drink, but I thought the food was ok...not great but ok. When I'm paying premium prices for food, I want defined flavors and a wonderful bouquet of aroma's from the dishes I order. I would put the food quality as someplace near Chinatown food, but the decor was really good. If you are going for food, walk elsewhere. IF you want a good drink thou, Le Colonial is a good place to check out. visit to read more reviews

Sophie's Crepes rated by: Beau_Safken

This is the place I go after I read some manga. The best is the green tea and red bean paste crepe. It sounds like a strange combo, but trust me....very very good. It can get crowded at times, but thankfully the people who make the crepes are skilled so you don't get holey crepes. Great place for a date if you are in Japantown because all the places you can sit and eat are just small enough for two people to sit nice and close ;) visit to read more reviews

Hang Ah Dim Sum rated by: samarati

I arrive Thursday 1:15pm. 75 seat room is 70% full. Everybody looks like they are enjoying their food. I'm greeted & seated 10 seconds after I walk in the door. Ice water and really good quality jasmine tea arrive 30 seconds later. I mark-up the dim sum order sheet. I pigged out. I order 7 baskets of dim sum. Veal meatballs, shrimp sui mai, tofu in cabbage broth, BBQ pork buns, custards, puddings, etc, (Oink!) The quality is okay. It's not refined. Presentation & flavors are back-country outer province Chinese food, not fancy-pants ultra-refined Mandarin cuisine. The balance of sweet / sour / salty / brothy / spicy / smoky is there, with all its rustic charm. Total damage was $25. In addition to dim sum, there is a 4 page menu of the usual suspects. Almond chicken combo lunch special is $6.95. It's a ton of food. (8 hours later: MSG warning; If you are MSG sensitive, beware here. I've got a classic MSG hangover headache and mild itchiness over my thorax.) visit to read more reviews

Wine Spectator Greystone (CIA) rated by: samarati

Bambi has eaten here 6 times, last night was my 1st. The views of the Napa valley from the patio, the building & grounds, the multi-million $ open kitchen, and the retail store are much more impressive than the food prepared in the restaurant. Short food menu just 6 entree, yet a 50 page wine/booze menu. Our 4 course, 2 hour early dinner was no better nor worse than meals I've had at the Culinary Academy on Polk Street. We enjoyed a perfect 78 degree evening on the patio, our server still had a sense of humor though on duty for 11 hours straight. We ate: gazpacho, falafel & beet salad on arugula, day boat scallops, beef short ribs, peach souflee. We drank 2 flights of 3 ounce wine pours, and espresso. Bill before tip = $155. A good value? No. Food flavors were a little oxidized. I could see that the plates were arriving fresh from the cook's hands, so I'm mystified why my short ribs tasted like re-heated food. The scallops were better. Come for the spectacle, not the food. visit to read more reviews

Caesar's Italian Restaurant rated by: kushnir

I know there will be the disagreements that I get when review “old style family city” restaurants from the crowd that wants vertical elements standing up on the plate as high as their suppressed ego will allow, No foam here! Bravo, this is the place our family came once a year on that special occasion, it was either here or Joe Ferreas' Troc Restaurant on Geary and Arguello. Anyway the food here is excellent, basic SF Italian not the latest from Tuscany or Umbria BS. The seafood and the pasta are great, the ambiance is better and the best is the prices are still down affordable for the normal non IT working stiff! The salads are fresh, the pasta al dente with succulent sauces loaded with enjoyment and satisfaction on every spoonful. If you are really hungry try their 7 course meal. You can roll out of there if your not careful. Nothing overdone here, a nice place with good old fashioned family values. Wait staff, seasoned old professionals in proper attire. Period. Little Shanghai has been our top fav. Its inside is not big, but seating is comfy. D xtensive menu has many items that we have not heard of be4, all r Shanghai regional f%d. Dim sum: steamed pork dumplings (8 for $6) & seared pork buns (6 for $5) r consistently gr8. Apps ($5 each): smoked fish, jellyfish, mung bean pasta r delicious. Hot & sour soup tasted better than most places ($6 enough for 6 servings). Exotic: stewed sea cucumber ($16), fish fillet in wine sauce ($10), stir-fried rice cake ($6), sesame dumpling in rice wine/petal sauce ($5 dessert, fragrant, naturally sweet & soothing). Shanghai n%dle ($6) was avg. F%d here is home c%king at its best. Ingredients r properly balanced in portions. Sauce & flavors 4 each dish r distinct on their own. Staff is polite & efficient. When bringing out each dish, they would say “Enjoy it!” as if ur best frnd.
Andale rated by: sfdee

I've shared quesadillas here as a snack with a friend and enjoyed them. Last night I ordered the special of soft tacos Al Pastor. What a rip off - even for a mall food court. Two small tacos with a smattering of not very interesting tasting meat on the mushy tacos hiding a few shreds of cabbage underneath. Not nearly as appealing or generous of a serving as shown as the photo posted on the counter. The tacos and a glass of the watermelon agua fresca set me back over $12. Even at a food court, I can do better than that. visit to read more reviews

AK wild halibut ($31) was 80% :) done, juicy, flaky, tasty, w/ wild mushr%m, white corn, barley, string beans in wine sauce. A+!
