Red Diesel Explained: Rules, Uses, and Cost-Saving Tips

Red Diesel remains an essential fuel for many of the UK industries, however with regulations and rising costs, it’s becoming more important to understand how Red Diesel works, who can use it and how to make sure you get the best value possible.

What is Red Diesel?

Red diesel is white diesel with a red dye. Red Diesel is also known as gas oil, marked diesel, tractor diesel, marked EN590, cherry red and 35-second oil.

Red Diesel is mainly used for off-road industries. The primary use of this fuel is tractors, forklift trucks, cranes etc.

Red dye enables customs to quickly determine whether a vehicle is legally or illegally using the fuel.

The dye in gas oil marks it as a low duty fuel that can be used legally to fuel untaxed, off-road vehicles.

You may face a fine or even lose your vehicle if you are caught driving on public roads fuelled by red diesel.

If you are buying red diesel in bulk for the first time or introducing new machinery to an existing business, GOV Website is a great way of finding out if red diesel is for you.

Red Diesel rules in 2026: Everything you need to know.

As of 2026, only certain sectors are allowed to use red diesel legally.

The following sectors can still use Red Diesel:

Agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

Rail transport

Non-commercial heating and power generation (homes off-gas)

Fishing and marine.

Certain industrial processes (where fuel is not used for propulsion)

The following industries can NO longer use Red Diesel:

Construction and demolition

Commercial heating

Plant and machinery used for commercial purposes outside permitted sectors.

If your business previously relied on red diesel but no longer qualifies, you would have to switch to white diesel or alternative fuels.

Why does compliance matter?

Avoid making costly mistakes, HMRC enforcement remains strict. A business must:

Keep accurate fuel records

Ensure tanks and machinery are labelled correctly.

Provide documentation during inspections.

Avoid cross-contamination between red and white diesel.

Accidental misuse can even result in fines, backdated fuel duty and reputational damage.

What is the true cost of Red Diesel?

Although red diesel is cheaper due to its lower duty rate, the price gap between red and white diesel has fluctuated a lot over the last few years. Red Diesel is highly volatile, driven by geopolitical conflicts, tight supply and market volatility.

What is the difference between red diesel and white diesel?

Red and white diesel are chemically identical however both have distinct uses and are dependent on regulations. White Diesel is primarily used in vehicles like cars, buses and trucks compared to Red Diesel which is instantly recognisable due to its red dye which differentiates them. Red Diesel is intended for off road vehicles and machines such as tractors, construction equipment and generators. The two types of diesels are different colours to prevent illegal road use and make red diesel instantly recognisable. Red Diesel is typically cheaper as it has lower taxes making it appealing.

Where can I buy red diesel?

Red Diesel is available to purchase from us here at Tate Oil. Just call us on 03300 552 889 and a member of our friendly team will be happy to advise and assist.

How should red diesel be stored?

Red Diesel should be stored in a secure tank that is away from direct sunlight, water and ignition sources. Legally tanks should be kept away from watercourses, flood zones and property boundaries. It is always best to use the fuel within 6 to 12 months to prevent degradation.

Why is red diesel cheaper than white diesel?

Red diesel is typically cheaper than white diesel because red diesel has a heavily reduced fuel duty rate. This means red diesel is taxed at a lower rate by the government as it is legally restricted to off-road vehicles and specific industries. White diesel is fully taxed with a large portion of the cost going towards maintaining public motorways and roads.

How can businesses reduce red diesel costs?

Businesses can reduce red diesel costs by bulk buying, this usually secures a lower price per litre. Businesses should also ensure proper engine maintenance for better fuel efficiency.

How does red diesel compare to alternative fuels like HVO?

Red Diesel and HVO are both used for off-road machinery and heating, however they differ drastically in a lot of other ways. Red Diesel is a fossil fuel; that produces high levels of greenhouse gas emissions compared to HVO that is a premium and renewable diesel made from sustainable waste fats and oils. HVO can also reduce net CO2 greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to standard diesel and burns much cleaner.

HVO typically comes with a higher price due to its refining process however this can often be offset by reduced equipment maintenance and carbon tax savings.

What are the future changes expected for red diesel in the UK?

There are currently significant short-term reductions in red diesel duty that have been implemented meaning that the rate is 6.48 per litre until December 31st, 2026. However, from January 1st, 2027, rates are scheduled to return to their original growth.

Here at Tate Oil, we do our best to provide our customers with the best service. If you need any Red Diesel, have any questions or concerns, please call us today!

Kerosene Heating Oil Explained: Uses & Benefits

What Is Kerosene Heating Oil?

Kerosene heating oil, often referred to as 28-second oil in the UK, is a highly refined, clean-burning fuel commonly used in domestic heating systems.

It is the most popular choice for off-grid homes that are not connected to the mains gas network.

Kerosene is stored in an external tank and delivered directly to your property, making it a convenient and efficient heating solution for rural households. It is an essential commodity for around 1.5 million homeowners across the UK, including a large part of Yorkshire.

Here at Tate Oil we supply kerosene to thousands of homes across the county and beyond! We deliver approximately 10.5 million litres of heating oil every year!

What Is Kerosene Used For?

Kerosene heating oil is used for:

Central heating systems

Domestic boilers

Cooking appliances such as oil-fired ranges

Hot water systems

Because of its clean-burning properties, kerosene is ideal for modern heating systems and helps maintain efficiency over time.

Benefits of Kerosene Heating Oil

Kerosene remains a popular heating fuel across the UK for several reasons:

High Efficiency

Kerosene burns cleanly and efficiently, making it ideal for modern condensing boilers. This means you get more heat output per litre compared to some alternative fuels.

Reliable Supply

With scheduled deliveries, you can ensure your tank is always topped up, especially important during colder months.

Cost-Effective Heating

Compared to electric heating, kerosene is often a more affordable option for heating larger homes.

Widely Available

There are many suppliers across the UK, making it easy to arrange delivery wherever you are.

Kerosene vs Other Heating Fuels

When comparing kerosene to other options:

Gas: Cheaper in some urban areas but unavailable off grid

Electric heating: Typically, more expensive for whole-home heating

Renewables: Lower emissions but higher upfront costs

Kerosene offers a balance between affordability, accessibility, and performance, especially for rural properties.

Tips for Buying Kerosene Oil

To get the best value from your kerosene supply:

Order during warmer months when demand is lower

Buy in bulk to reduce cost per litre

Keep track of your usage to avoid emergency deliveries

Is Kerosene Heating Right for You?

Kerosene heating oil is an excellent option if you live off the gas grid and need a reliable, efficient way to heat your home. While prices can fluctuate, careful planning and smart purchasing can help keep costs under control.

For many UK households, kerosene remains a practical and cost-effective solution for year-round heating.

How long will 500 litres of heating oil last?

500 litres will typically last around 2-3 months for the average house during winter, however how fast you burn through heating oil varies drastically.

In very cold weather and a poorly insulated home, 500 litres may only last 4 – 8 weeks. However, if you have a small home and that is insulated well, this could last 3 months or more!

How much you go through will depend on your insulation, home size, boiler efficiency, and weather.

Is Kerosene cheaper than electricity for heating?

Kerosene is generally cheaper than electricity for heating, often providing high efficiency compared to the high rates of standard electricity.

Is kerosene heating being phased out in the UK?

As part of the government’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, from 2025 oil boilers will no longer be installed in new build properties, however you will not be forced to remove a working oil boiler.

The strong alternative for kerosene is HVO that we also currently provide at Tate Oil. For more information about HVO (Hydrotreated vegetable oil) Please read here.

How often should an oil tank be cleaned?

Oil tanks should be professionally cleaned every 5 years to remove sludge and water buildup. This helps to prevent system failures. It is also recommended that your oil tank should be inspected annually to check for any damage, leaks or any other issues.

Does Kerosene freeze in cold weather?

No, kerosene does not usually freeze in typical cold weather. Commercial grade Kerosene has a very low gel point which is usually around -40 degrees Celsius.

Can Kerosene expire?

Yes, kerosene can expire. It usually lasts 2-5 years if stored correctly, however it degrades over time due to water contamination, oxidation and microbial growth. This then leads to reduced performance and potentially sludge. For optimal performance use Kerosene within 1-2 years.

If your kerosene has expired it will look darker or yellow, and a strong sour smell with appear.

What type of heating oil do I need?

For most UK homes, Kerosene is the most common heating oil for your heating system. It is recommended to check the sticker on your tank or ask a specialist what type of oil you need.

In need of Kerosene?

From instant online ordering to budget-friendly payment plans, there are plenty of ways to order your domestic fuels with Tate Oil.

Reap the benefits of an auto top-up, tax-free payment plan, or enjoy the flexibility of our spot-price, market reflective rates – however you prefer to order your heating oil, you can order quickly and easy with Tate Oil.

What is HVO Fuel?

Tate Oil are proud to supply HVO – a clean, efficient fuel with up to 90% less CO2 emissions!

As a fuel supplier with over 50 years’ experience, we’ve supplied thousands of customers with high quality, affordable fuel for their homes or business. We pride ourselves on offering the best products on the market, which is why we’re excited to supply HVO: a new, interchangeable, renewable fuel!

What is HVO Fuel?

HVO fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable diesel alternative made from sustainable raw materials such as used cooking oils, animal fats, and vegetable oils.

Unlike traditional biodiesel (FAME), HVO is produced through a hydrogenation process, resulting in a high-quality, paraffinic fuel that meets EN 15940 standards.

HVO fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to standard diesel and is widely used as a drop-in replacement in diesel engines across transport, construction, agriculture, and commercial sectors.

Why use HVO for your business?

When you use HVO as your preferred fuel, not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll also be hugely improving your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In an age where consumers look to purchase their goods from responsible and environmentally aware businesses, swapping your fuel to HVO is an easy and affordable way to immediately decarbonise your business.

Is HVO better than diesel?

HVO fuel offers several advantages over conventional diesel:

Lower emissions: Up to 90% reduction in net CO₂ emissions

Cleaner burning: Reduces particulates and NOx emissions

No engine modifications required: Works as a direct replacement

Improved storage stability: Longer shelf life than traditional diesel

Reduced odour: Less smell during storage and use

While HVO is typically more expensive than standard diesel, many businesses choose it to reduce their environmental impact and support sustainability targets.

Here at Tate Oil, we can assess suitability and supply options.

Can I use HVO in my existing engine?

Yes, in most cases, HVO can be used as a direct replacement for diesel without any engine modifications. It is compatible with the majority of modern diesel engines and fuel systems.

Many leading engine manufacturers, including Volvo, Scania, and Mercedes-Benz, approve the use of HVO fuel. However, it’s always recommended to check your manufacturer’s guidance or speak to your fuel supplier before switching.

How much does HVO fuel cost in the UK?

The price of HVO fuel in the UK is typically higher than standard diesel due to production costs and limited supply. On average, HVO can cost 10–20% more per litre than conventional diesel, although this can vary depending on market conditions and volume purchased.

Despite the higher upfront cost, many organisations find value in HVO through carbon reduction, improved ESG performance, and future-proofing against environmental regulations.

We’re working hard to make HVO accessible for everyone!

Alongside UKIFDA and OFTEC, we’re supporting the Future Ready Fuel campaign! With the aim to supply HVO for domestic use, Future Ready Fuel are highlighting the need for affordable renewable energy in homes – especially in off-the-grid areas. There are 1.5 million homes on heating oil in the UK – if we can transition those homes to a clean energy, such as HVO, we can help the UK hit the 2050 Net Zero target!

If you’d like to support this campaign, please visit the Future Ready Fuel website! On there, you can find useful information, Government updates and ways you can help Future Ready Fuel in their bid to bring HVO into domestic homes.

Where can I buy HVO fuel?

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of safe kerosene storage, especially during summer when the mercury rises. Kerosene fuel, also known as burning oil, is a clear and thin oil that, when stored improperly, can be harmful to people and property.

Do you know how to look after your heating oil?

1) Understand Kerosene and Its Properties

Kerosene fuel is often mislabeled as an unsafe method of heating your home. Historically, kerosene was known as ‘carbon oil’ and ‘coal oil,’ both significant in the development of kerosene and the American oil industry. Like petrol or diesel fuel that you might put in your car, kerosene is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid – meaning that it will ignite under certain conditions. Luckily, kerosene has a high flash point which makes it far less likely to burn unintentionally. That flashpoint of around 60ºC makes kerosene one of the safest fuel oil options out there. As a liquid, kerosene has low viscosity as the temperature goes up, so it can potentially get into small cracks/ badly fitted valves. The immediate dangers of kerosene fuel oil lie more in the polluting aspects rather than the risk of ignition.

2) Choose the Right Storage Container

It should go without saying: Kerosene needs to be stored properly. Kerosene is derived from crude oil through a process of fractional distillation. Your domestic heating oil, whilst not really at risk of spontaneously igniting, can have be damaging to flora and is poisonous to animals that could come into contact with it. Standard kerosene fuel must be stored in tanks that meet specific regulations. The tanks that we install at Tate Oil are all “bunded”, meaning that they have a second layer intended to prevent spillage or environmental contamination.

We offer both metal and plastic bunded tanks that can be installed either subterraneanly or above ground. For domestic heating oil especially, there are tighter rules around tank capacity, distance from property and maintenance scheduling. Lubricating oil is another product derived from the distillation of crude oil, highlighting the variety of outputs from this process.

Metal tanks are generally considered to be more safe than plastic, as they are less likely to crack in changing temperatures and are generally more hardy.

3) Select an Appropriate Storage Location

Despite the comparative safety of Kerosene fuel, it’s sensible to take precautions. Kerosene is also used as jet fuel in aviation due to its specific properties and grades. Domestic properties are required to keep heating oil tanks no closer than 1800mm from the primary building structure, but there are other things to take in toconsideration too. Keeping your tank in a shaded location will extend its life compared to putting it in direct sunlight.

4) Handle Kerosene with Care

Handling kerosene fuel requires caution and attention to safety guidelines. As a combustible hydrocarbon liquid, kerosene can be hazardous if not handled properly. When dealing with kerosene, always wear protective gloves and eyewear to prevent skin and eye irritation.

Ensure good ventilation in the area to avoid inhaling fumes, which can be harmful. It’s crucial to never smoke or use open flames near kerosene, as it can ignite easily. Always adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for handling and storing kerosene to ensure safety.

5) Use Premium Kerosene for Better Performance

For those seeking a more efficient and reliable heating oil, premium kerosene is an excellent choice. High-quality fuel is formulated with additives that reduce deposit build-up in engines and boilers, leading to less maintenance and fewer breakdowns. Premium kerosene burns cleaner, producing fewer emissions and less soot. To reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy a cleaner-burning fuel, consider either switching to premium kerosene for your domestic heating needs, or providing additives like our Kero Ultra.

6) Label and Date Storage Containers

Proper labelling and dating of storage containers are essential for safe kerosene storage. Always store kerosene in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and flammable materials, to maintain safety.

7) Regularly Inspect Storage Containers and Equipment

Regular inspections of storage containers and equipment are crucial for ensuring safe kerosene storage. Check containers for signs of damage, rust, or corrosion, and replace them if necessary. Inspect equipment such as pumps and hoses for wear and tear, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance and repair. Regular inspections help identify potential hazards early, preventing accidents and ensuring the longevity of your storage system.

8) Prevent Contamination

As with any kind of tank or indeed utility supply, it’s important to keep heating fuel free from contaminants. Historically, kerosene was extracted from oil shale before the rise of petroleum-based products. What do we mean by contaminants? Leaves, dirt and dust will block your tank and pipes, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Keep your tank free from obstruction, and sealed carefully.

9) Follow Local Regulations and Guidelines

When storing and using kerosene, it’s essential to adhere to local regulations and guidelines. Check with your local authorities to determine any specific regulations or restrictions on kerosene storage and use in your area. Some regions may have specific requirements for storage container size, location, and labeling. Following local regulations not only ensures safe and responsible kerosene use but also helps you avoid potential legal issues.

10) Follow Fire Safety Measures

It may seem obvious – but with any kind of flammable liquid, fire safety is non-negotiable. Historically, kerosene was used as lamp fuel and lamp oil for lighting. Keep your kerosene oil tank protected from extreme sources of heat, and ensure that no sources of ignition get close to the tank itself. Oil lamps, which used kerosene, posed significant safety hazards, including fire risks. Regular inspection and maintenance will prolong the longevity of your heating oil system, so keep a weather-eye on your home heating fuel oil.

What is Heating Oil?

Heating oil, also known as kerosene, is a type of fuel used in domestic heating systems. Heating oil provides invaluable heating for homes in colder months and provides hot domestic water in multiple types of property, both commercial and domestic – so it’s a vital component in many homes, particularly in rural areas where access to alternative energy sources may be limited. A well-maintained heating oil tank and boiler is crucial for ensuring efficient fuel performance and minimising costs.

Key Factors Affecting Heating Oil Prices

Several factors contribute to fluctuations in heating oil prices. At the heart of these price swings is the price of crude oil, which has a direct impact on the global oil market. When crude oil prices rise or fall, so to do domestic heating oil prices. Heating oil prices can vary significantly depending on the supplier, location, and time of year.

Global events such as political tensions or natural disasters can also influence oil production and prices. Fuel prices for diesel and petrol can correlate with heating oil prices due to shared market dynamics. Oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Russia play a significant role in shaping global oil prices, which in turn impact domestic heating oil costs.

Domestic Heating Oil Prices

In the UK, domestic heating oil prices are affected by various local factors. VAT (Value-Added Tax) is applied to heating oil, contributing to its overall cost. Prices can fluctuate throughout the year, with higher demand during winter months driving up costs. Rural areas like those that we serve can sometimes face higher prices due to increased transportation costs and limited competition.

Understanding Affects on Heating Oil Prices

Weather conditions, fuel consumption patterns, and regional factors all play a part in shaping heating oil prices. For instance, a harsh winter can lead to increased demand for heating oil, causing prices to rise. Home boiler usage, property size, and the type of oil used (e.g., kerosene or diesel) also affect costs.

In rural areas, homeowners may experience higher prices due to limited access to competitive suppliers. However, with a little research and negotiation, it’s possible to secure better deals from reliable suppliers like us at Tate Oil. We offer competitive pricing, year-round service, and payment plans that can lead to significant savings over time.

Additional Concerns and Considerations

In addition to securing the best price, it’s also essential to consider long-term savings through energy-efficient practices. Regularly servicing your boiler and adjusting your consumption habits can lead to significant cost reductions over time. Investing in alternative heating solutions or renewable energy systems may also be worth exploring for those seeking a renewable options. (watch this space for Tate Solar…!!!)

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of regular oil tank maintenance and delivery scheduling. These factors can significantly impact your costs and ensure reliable service throughout the year.

Understanding the factors that influence heating oil prices is crucial for making informed decisions about your energy needs. By considering crude oil prices, global supply and demand, fuel prices, and regional factors, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the complexities of the heating oil market.

Whether you’re a homeowner or business owner, taking control of your energy costs can lead to significant savings over time.

Best Prices for Your Home

For those seeking the best prices for their domestic heating oil needs, consider the following:

• Take advantage of bulk orders and loyalty schemes like our payment plan Freedom Account.

• Regularly check fuel prices and adjust consumption habits

• Maintain your heating oil tank regularly to prevent costly leaks and ensure efficient delivery

• Consider investing in energy-efficient practices or alternative heating solutions for long-term savings

By implementing these strategies, you’ll be well on your way to securing the best price for your home’s heating oil needs.

For those not served by the the UK’s gas infrastructure, Heating Oil is a must-have.

Per the 2021 census, around 3.8 Million properties in the UK use alternative fuel sources such as heating oil, wood, solid fuel or other renewables.

At Tate Oil, we supply domestic heating oil to customers across the UK as well as commercial properties, serving rural areas and keeping people warm in winter. So, what are the benefits of switching to heating oil?

Read on for more benefits of switching to heating oil.

Understanding Heating Oil

We supply a number of different types of oil, including White Diesel, Red Diesel, domestic heating oil and kerosene.

Economic Advantages of Heating Oil

Cost-Effectiveness: Lower Initial Setup Costs

For any property, central heating is a necessity. Some older buildings or ones with particular restrictions (e.g. listed status) cannot be fitted with gas central heating, not to mention the cost of bringing gas onsite can be prohibitive for many homeowners. Heating Oil Tanks are simple to install, mobile, and can be refilled as regularly or as rarely as you choose. Our Domestic Tanks range have a capacity between 2,500 litres up to 80,000 litres. Get In Touch for more information on fitting a heating oil tank

Pricing: Insulating Against Market Fluctuations

Whilst other fuel types such as electric and natural gas are charged per KWh with an additional standing order, with heating oil you have greater control over how much energy you use. Whilst heating oil prices do fluctuate, filling your tank whilst the price is lower can help through the winter months when demand is likely to go up.

Heating Oil itself is a cost effective and efficient fuel source, generating more energy per therm than natural gas or propane, and is wildly more effective than electric boilers. An oil boiler also lasts longer than a gas boiler – you can get up to 30 years of longevity from an oil boiler if it’s looked after and maintained properly.

Reliability and Supply Security

Consistent Supply: Reliability During Peak Winter Months

We’re proud of our track record as a heating oil supplier – providing timely and reliable delivery to rural areas throughout the winter. Heating your home needn’t be stressful – Storage Benefits: Long Shelf Life of Heating Oil

Performance and Efficiency

High Energy Output: Quick Heating Capabilities

We’ve already covered that heating oil burns efficiently, but just how much heating oil is needed to heat a home? Radiators are sometimes rated in BTUs (British Thermal Units), the same unit for different fuel types.

How efficient is Heating Oil?

Heating oil, or more specifically kerosene generates 129,500 BTU per gallon. Compare that to natural gas, which produces only 166 BTU.

Safety Considerations

Still got reservations? Let’s discuss safety.

Simply put, heating oil doesn’t ignite in the same way as gas does – making it safer for your home all year round. To compare it to another type of oil – petrol (gasoline) has a subzero flashpoint, meaning that if you introduce a flame to it, it will burn quickly. The same cannot be said about heating oil, which requires a far higher temperature to ignite, in the region of 50ºC. This makes it safer to store, and safer to use.

Convenience and Flexibility

Versatile Application: Heating Oil for Various Home Sizes

Because heating oil tanks vary in size, home owners of all types of property can install a new tank with very little impact to their home. Whereas adding gas to a property can include landscaping and underground pipework, a heating oil tank sits outside a home and can be disguised in gardens fairly easily. Luckily, your radiators don’t care what type of boiler heats the water, so integrating heating oil into your existing system is simple.

Energy Independence

When it comes to energy independence, heating oil trumps gas hands down. Whereas gas requires you to be connected to the grid 24/7, along with the huge infrastructure that it requires, pay excessive standing charges and be at the mercy of multinationals, heating oil allows homeowners and businesses alike to take control of their home heating systems.

Switching to heating oil also supports local businesses like us, who source, distribute and deliver straight to your door.

Customer Support and Service

We’re proud of our commitment to exceptional customer service.

Speak to our experienced team today!

With multiple factors affecting heating oil prices, it’s important to know how to find the best prices in your area. Kerosene is used in some heating oil burners, and is an affordable alternative to mains gas or electricity. Domestic heating oil is more efficient than mainstream alternatives, and can be deployed to remote areas.

Understanding Kerosene and Its Market

What is Kerosene? Composition and Uses

Kerosene is a hydrocarbon, derived from crude oil. Commonly used as jet fuel, Kerosene is also known as paraffin – which is more often used for lighting lamps or as heating oil.

What Affects Heating Oil Prices?

As kerosene starts out as crude oil, the price of kerosene to a consumer varies with the market. Crude oil is mainly pumped from underground wells, with many offshore rigs outputting thousands of barrels every day.

As we saw throughout the COVID pandemic and with the conflict in the middle east and eastern Europe, oil prices can fluctuate wildly. Indeed; in the early months of the pandemic, global oil prices and by extension fuel prices were affected in such a way that consumers were, in effect paid to take it off supplier’s hands, such was the lack of demand for jet fuel or other fuels. Kerosene prices have weathered recent global events relatively well, currently averaging around 62pence per litre – the same as in 2011. The outbreak of COVID-19 and national lockdowns saw prices drop as low as 29pence per litre, whilst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis in late 2022 saw prices rise to as much as 110pence per litre.

Preparing your home for a heating oil delivery during the winter period is really important in order to ensure a smooth and safe process. Not only that, but it keeps our drivers safe!

Here are some simple steps to take:

Clear Access to the Tank: As you would throughout the rest of the year, it’s important that the driver can get clear access to your heating oil tank. During the colder months, it’s important (if you can) to remove snow and ice. Your delivery driver will not only be watching his step for slippy patches, but he’s also carrying a heavy hose.

Provide Adequate Lighting: As daylight is limited through winter, it’s important that where possible, the area around the oil tank is well-lit. Our drivers will be carrying head torches, but anything that helps them safely and efficiently make your delivery is really appreciated!

Secure Pets: Once you know your delivery is imminent, it makes sense to secure your pets inside your home. This avoids any interference with the delivery, accidents or even escapes!

Communicate Special Instructions: Leave special instructions with our friendly team in the office, should you be aware of any changes to the delivery, such as deep snow or thick ice on approaching roads.

Check for Leaks or Damage: Even throughout the winter, you should inspect your oil tank for leaks and damage. You’re looking for rust (on metal tanks), cracks, splits, leaks or white stress marks (on plastic tanks). If a driver thinks that the weight of his oil delivery may make any tank imperfections worse, he may abort his delivery.

Know Your Tank Level: Keep an eye on your oil level regularly, especially during the winter months when heating demands are higher. Schedule your delivery with us well before you need it.

Schedule Regular Maintenance: Make sure you have a regular service on your tank and boiler. By running your system at its most efficient, you’ll also save money on fuel and repairs! Remember, prevention is better than cure. A well maintained heating system will avoid unwanted call-outs during a heating engineer’s busiest time!

Be Available or Provide Access: If your heating oil tank is locked or sits behind locked gates, it’s imperative that you are available to give access. If you aren’t around during the day, you may wish to leave a key with a neighbour, send us a spare, leave special instructions or call the day of the delivery to arrange meeting the driver at your property.

Our drivers are at their busiest throughout the winter period and really appreciate easy, safe access to well-lit tanks, in order to make their deliveries as efficiently as possible.

How Does the Cold Weather Priority Scheme Operate?

The Cold Weather Priority (CWP) scheme was set up to prioritise caring for elderly heating oil customers. If your household includes one or more residents aged 75 and above, you qualify for participation in this program.

The scheme functions by offering an additional layer of assistance to elderly customers. We do our utmost to prioritize those enrolled in the scheme, especially during the winter months.

At Tate Oil, we employ various methods to identify customers falling into the ‘CWP’ category. These methods include engaging with customers during their order placements to assess eligibility, we send communications to inform our customers about the CWP initiative and seeking their interest in being classified as CWP customers.

We dedicate significant efforts to identify customers aged 75 and above. We encourage customers to inform us if they or someone in their home is aged 75 or older, thereby ensuring their inclusion in the CWP scheme.

The scheme costs nothing, and to be eligible you simply need to have one or more residents at your address aged 75 or over. Just let us know at the point of ordering if your household is eligible.

Should you have any questions about the Cold Weather Priority scheme, you can check the UKIFDA website or just give us a call: 03300 552 889

The decision to change your heating oil tank depends on several factors. Here are some considerations that can help you determine when it might be time to replace your heating oil tank:

Age of the Tank: Heating oil tanks have a lifespan, typically ranging from 15 to 30 years, depending on the material and maintenance. If your tank is approaching or has exceeded its expected lifespan, it may be a good idea to consider replacement.

Tank Material: Tanks can be made of different materials, such as steel or fiberglass. Steel tanks are more prone to corrosion over time, so if you have a steel tank that is showing signs of rust or corrosion, it may be time to replace it. Fiberglass tanks generally have a longer lifespan and are less susceptible to corrosion.

Leaks or Spills: If you notice any signs of leaks or spills around your tank, this is a clear indication that there is a problem. Leaks can lead to environmental contamination and pose a safety hazard. In such cases, prompt action is essential, and replacing the tank may be the best solution.

Regulatory Compliance: As environmental and safety regulations evolve, older heating oil tanks may no longer meet current standards. If your tank is not in compliance with current regulations, it might be necessary to replace it to avoid legal issues and ensure the safety of your property.

Insurance Requirements: Some insurance companies have requirements regarding the age and condition of heating oil tanks. If your tank no longer meets their standards, it could affect your coverage. Check with your insurance provider to understand their policies and whether a replacement is necessary.

Maintenance Issues: If your tank has required frequent repairs or maintenance, it may be a sign that it’s becoming unreliable. Continuous issues can be costly and inconvenient, and replacing the tank might be a more cost-effective solution in the long run.

Fuel Efficiency: Newer heating oil tanks are often designed to be more energy-efficient. If you’re looking to improve the efficiency of your heating system, upgrading to a newer tank could be part of the solution.

I’ve decided Im going to be changing my heating oil tank, what next?

Before making a decision, it’s advisable to consult with a professional heating technician or tank specialist.
