Fairs are so popular not only because favorite creators put out new releases but also because they give us a chance to browse through others we haven’t seen before.

When companies have employees based in different locations, collaboration can often be difficult. At TechCrunch, we use Yammer to communicate. But what if you want a team to collaborate and provide feedback on the development of content and features on websites and web platforms? That’s where Notable comes in. Notable, which is a product of design agency ZURB, lets you quickly and easily give feedback on design, content, and code on any page of a website or application without leaving your browser.

Notable is essentially a page capture utility with an annotation feature that lets you highlight copy, design elements and even code that needs to be tweaked. To get started, you either install the Notable Firefox plugin, or download the Notable iPhone application from the App Store [iTunes link].

From there, you capture the design via a Firefox tool button, upload a JPG image or design mock-up from your desktop, or type in a URL. You can invite people into your “workspace” where they can leave comments in dialog boxes that can be dragged around the page and provide feedback on the design and code. Notable is giving away a free iPod Touch to anyone who has the most views on a public post through September 30.

This is my third alt. So far, she’s a lot like what I originally envisioned Amelia being. Don’t ask me why I made her, I just did. I used to have this list of places for new avatars to go get free stuff but when I was shopping for her I surprised that most of those places didn’t have that stuff anymore. I did, however, find other places to fill in the gaps.

Her shape is a freebie from Lemon. It is copy/mod although I hadn’t changed anything when I took this picture. The skin and eyes are from the Pixeldolls L10 sale that’s been going on. Her coloring is inspired by a friend who just got back from Iraq. Her hair is a 1L items from ETD. Her clothes are from ETD too, the same sale area as the hair. Her shoes are a gift from joining the Maitreya group. And her earrings are from Junk which is always cheap.

Total to this point is less that 100L for a fairly personalized avatar. Where I really splurged was the AO. I could have probably made a fairly nice inexpensive one with some hunting but I opted for a fully premade one from Torrid. 350L for 15 poses, sits, walking and flying animations at this quality was just too good to pass up.

So that’s my experience with SL life on the cheap side. I might most more pics of later as she evolves.

Alts give us an interesting chance to explore parts of ourselves we normally don’t see. My first alt came about because I was bored. I had no plans for her (so she hasn’t done much) but everyone was shocked when she turned out to be Cyber Goth. And there was nothing I could do to persuade her otherwise.

This is my second alt. She’s quite a bit more idiosyncratic and trendy than Amelia.

They look almost nothing alike, which is one reason why I like her, she can wear stuff Amelia can’t. Yes, I could change Amelia’s shape but I like her the way she is, an individual. I spend much less money on my alts than I do Amelia. One of the more interesting things to come out of this though is that when I do buy stuff for them, it tends to be at stores Amelia doesn’t get much stuff from. This one in particular is a Truth girl. She wears the boots in the first photo a lot and the top and shorts are from Truth too. She has a set of skins sent to the news group a while ago that she wears often. I can’t wait for the release.

These are the other two tops I got at Pink Outfitters. On the left is the Flair vest in purple over a lace cami from Aphrodite Creations. With the textured buttons it kind of required a punk look. The other one is the 9teen vest. It’s a very versatile piece that could go a lot of ways. I love the way it imitates an hourglass shape and the way it fits with the high-waisted skirt. The white undershirt comes with the vest but it can also be worn with alone or with other tops. The white shirt is on the undershirt layer, the skirt top is on the shirt layer and the vest is on the jacket layer.

Pink Outfitters had a sale on dresses so I popped by to take a look. And didn’t buy any dresses but I did get some tops. This is the first, the cardigan can be worn with the camisole or alone. Normally this kind of thing just begs me to do a prim and proper librarian look but that wasn’t what I was in the mood for. So it’s got a little bit of a punk edge, still perfectly appropriate for work.

This is the Ana dress from Cat5 (Category 5). The tights are a freebie from Royal Blue and the shoes are from Aphrodite Creations. Every year Curio releases a great period hair every fashionista must have. This year’s is Betty Boop. I’ve been wearing the Audrey skins almost non-stop since they were released but I haven’t blogged them much (‘course I haven’t blogged much). I’m totally in love with the shading and highlighting.

Apple Yanks The Cord On GV Mobile. Is It Trying To Kill Google Voice On The iPhone?

Google Voice is a pretty amazing service, but it comes with a number of minor annoyances, including the way in handles outgoing calls and SMS messages. Fortunately, Google has recently come out with a number of smartphone apps for BlackBerry and Android that obviate the need for any extra steps, making Google Voice a natural replacement for your phone’s native dialer. The iPhone still lacks an official client, but that hasn’t stopped a handful of third party developers from releasing their own apps, which have been available on the App Store for the last few months. Today, however, it sounds like Apple has made the decision to crack down on these: Sean Kovacs, the developer behind the popular app GV Mobile, has written on his blog that Apple is going to be removing his application, citing the fact that it “duplicates features that come with the iPhone”.

From Kovac’s blog:

Richard Chipman from Apple just called - he told me they’re removing GV Mobile from the App Store due to it duplicating features that the iPhone comes with (Dialer, SMS, etc). He didn’t actually specify which features, although I assume the whole app in general. He wouldn’t send a confirmation email either - too scared I would post it. I’ll see what I can do to get it back up there gang…

Once again, Apple’s App Store policies have crossed the line from irritating to totally ridiculous. GV Mobile taps into a service that is entirely different from the iPhone’s native dialer, making Google Voice far easier to use than it normally is. It’s also laughable that Apple would refuse to specify exactly which features the app was duplicating.

Even more worrying are the implications this would have if it becomes Apple’s policy to ban Google Voice apps from the App Store, which would strike a major blow to the service. There is at least one other Google Voice app already available on the App Store, called VoiceCentral, and we’ve previously confirmed that Google has an official app in the works. Update: VoiceCentral has been removed from the App Store as well. This looks like a store-wide policy change.

It’s entirely possible that Apple’s decision to ban the app is being driven not by user confusion, but by AT&T’s request. Google Voice is very powerful, and is only becoming increasingly so as it releases new apps and features that make it easier to use. It also hits the carriers where it hurts, making it easy for users to swap numbers on a whim, get cheap calls, save on SMS, and much more.

And while it would be surprising if Apple blocked Google’s app from the App Store, it wouldn’t be the first time Google was forced to bow to Apple’s wishes — just last week Google had to scrap a native app built for its Latitude service in favor of a web app at Apple’s request. Yet another possibility is that Google’s official application is imminent, and the GV Mobile app was pulled to reduce confusion once that’s out (though this seems less likely).

Update: Apple has removed VoiceCentral from the App Store as well. While both GV Mobile and VoiceCentral still have their profiles available in the store, attempts to buy them results in an error message that they are no longer available.

6 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Taking on a New Client

At the start of their careers, most freelancers take on every new client that comes along. But as we mature and gain more experience, we become more discerning when we’re choosing who we work with. This usually happens because we’re starting to specialize, we want to avoid dead-end projects, or we become more specific about the work we prefer to do.

As we become more involved in selecting clients, what criteria can we set?

Are you the best freelancer for the project? We usually hope that the answer to this question is “yes,” but this isn’t always the case. From the start, we need to know if our work values, skills and experience are what the client needs.

Even if you don’t have all the skills needed, do you know where you can find capable people who can help you out? This is where your network comes in. If you aren’t the best freelancer for the job, you can always pass on the project to someone who is.

What do you know about the prospect’s working history with freelancers? If I’m talking with a potential client who has worked with freelancers before, I make the effort to find out what their working relationship was like. I find that the more difficult and unpleasant their experience with prior freelancers was, the more likely they are to volunteer this information. This helps you avoid the mistakes that your predecessors made, as well as predict future obstacles and problems.

Do they see your services as a cost or an investment? Many new business owners see it as a chore to go out of their way and hire a professional. Some even go out of their way to point out how replaceable you are if you charge them “too much” for something they can “hire a high school student to do”. Watch out for these warning signs. They indicate that the client sees you as an expense, and not as a professional that can actually help their business. They are probably hiring you because they know they need the finished product — but they don’t know why or how it affects their business.

Can you handle the extra workload? If I may make a slight reworking of Hofstadter’s Law: “You always have less free time than you expect, even if you take this law into account.” It’s not just the project work that will take up your time. Client support can eat up several hours of your workweek, especially at the beginning. You might also need to provide extras to keep the client informed and happy.

It can be tempting to take on a new project, particularly in economically turbulent times. But if you don’t have the resources or the time to devote your best work to the job, then accepting it can be detrimental to your career.

Is there a possibility of developing a long-term working relationship? Not all clients need long term work, but many of them do, even if they don’t know it yet. If you see a possibility of working with this client in the long haul, it’s best to take advantage of it if you can. Having one long-term client can be more profitable and fulfilling than trying to keep a constant incoming stream of several short-term clients. It’s easier for the client too, as screening, hiring and training new freelancers can be a drain on their time and resources as well.

What will you learn from this job? As freelancers, we need to be more conscious about stepping up and acquiring new skills. We aren’t automatically sent to seminars and training courses like most of our corporate counterparts.

Meet Miss Hannah.

Artist, reader and the greatest big sister in the world!

Hannah is also a patient.

Right this minute she is in the hospital with aplastic anemia.

I’ve never met Hannah, but I met her friend, Jason, through Twitter (@jseliskar).

Now it seems that Hannah loves to get mail.

Snail-mail, that is.

Good old fashioned cards and letters and pictures from other kids and…well, you get the idea!

Hannah’s mom, Debbie, is working on scrapbook pages while she is with Hannah in the hospital.

That’s where I got this photo.

Now, I’ve never met Debbie, either, but she has a great blog called “Our Journey to China for Hannah’s Little Sister, Hope”.

Now the blog chronicles the miracle of Hope (literally!) and the results of hopes and prayers for Hannah’s recovery from aplastic anemia.
