I have not been blogging for the past week because my mother passed away. I'm still here and trying to get back to normal, whatever that is now. Just wanted to let you know that I will continue blogging when I am able. She would want me to continue being creative and doing what I love.

There are lots of Primitive Recipes around in bloggy land for making Primitive Sugar Cones. A lot of them involve cooking the sugar with water in a pot, and well, I'm just too lazy for that. So I checked out a bunch of no-cook recipes and combined some into my own new recipe that I thought I'd share.

This recipe will usually make 2 medium Sugar Cones, but it will vary depending on the size of your molds.

Ingredients

3 Cups of Dark Brown Sugar*

3 Cups of White Granulated Sugar

1 Cup of Water (you will not use it all)

3 TBSP Instant Coffee Granules

Non-Stick Cooking Spray

Mold for the Sugar

Aluminum Foil

First of all, some notes: You don't have to use 2 kinds of sugar; you can use all Dark Brown Sugar, all White Sugar, or even all Light Brown Sugar. But I like the look of white and dark brown sugar, so that's what I used here. For a more solid look, then just use one type of sugar. Also, you don't have to use the Instant Coffee if you don't want. You can just use plain water. The coffee just adds an extra layer of scent, and a touch of darkness here and there. But it's totally optional. And also, for the sugar mold...you can use all sorts of things if you don't have an actual sugar mold: Styrofoam cups, paper cups, a fluted beer glass, or anything in your home that has a shape you like. You could also invest in a silicone candle mold that is shaped like a sugar cone, because you can buy them!

Directions

Spray your mold(s) lightly with the non-stick cooking spray.

In your cup of water dissolve the Instant Coffee (if you're just using water skip this step).

Add your sugar to a large a bowl and use your fingers or a fork to get all of the lumps and clumps out.

Dip your fingers in the water-coffee mixture (or plain water) and sprinkle the water from your fingers into the sugar. Work the water into the sugar with your hands. Repeat this process until the sugar becomes the consistency of wet sand. If your sugar gets too wet, add a little more sugar.

Pack your sugar, a little bit at a time, into your molds. Make sure you pack it good and solid and just do a little at a time to ensure that it gets tightly packed into the molds. Once your mold is full, you can take a table knife and level it off so that it will sit flat.

Invert your molds onto a flat, foil-covered surface. A cookie sheet is perfect for this. Be careful when removing the mold so that the sugar cone stays solid and doesn't crumble. Take your time!

Once the sugar cones are released from the molds, they need to sit, untouched, in a cool, dry place for 3-7 days. Time will vary according to room temperature and humidity. But once they're finished they should become quite hard.

Your finished Primitive Sugar Cones can be wrapped in grungy muslin, cheesecloth, or ribbon, or even tied up with jute or homespun. Do a bit of Googling and you can find lots of examples of other Sugar Cones that may give you some more creative inspiration for presentation.

I have a lot of Primitive Home Decor that I change around from time to time. Sometimes I change it with the seasons, sometimes I change some little thing just because I need a change. My Primitive Doll n Berries Basket is a good example of that.

This basket sits on the table near my couch. It's always filled with Pip Berries, but I like to vary what other little goodies are in the basket from time to time. Right now, there's an adorable, handmade Primitive Doll in the basket with the Pip Berries. She was part of an ornie swap I was in a few years ago. I just loved her so much I wanted to keep her around the house, wherever I could find a spot. So she kind of travels around my home, finding new places to "live" now and again.

Part of living in tight financial times is cutting back on unnecessary purchases, and a lot of times home decor is just not necessary. So if I don't feel like making something, and if I can't afford to buy anything, moving things around in my home that I already have on hand is the best way to get a new look, without spending any money. I'm nothing if not <strike>cheap</strike> frugal!

I love my little Primitive Doll though. She is always smiling, she never asks for the remote control, and she brightens up my living room...without costing me a dime.

I Was Featured at Craft Junkie Too

I want to send a quick Thank You to Tracy over at the Craft Junkie Too blog. She just featured my post on Who's Pinning You on Pinterest over on her blog.

So nice of Tracy to feature my blog post on her blog. You really should check out her blog too. She has tons of great stuff there, and some wonderful link parties too, which I have participated in many times. Link Parties are such a great way to find new project new ideas, or new blogs to visit...or to get traffic to your own blog.

Anyway, thanks again, Tracy!

Goodbye Google Friend Connect

I don't know how it's possible that I didn't know this until yesterday, but Google Friend Connect is going to disappear as of March 1st. Any non-Blogger blogs will be the first to suffer since GFC will stop functioning for those blogs first. Rumor has it that GFC will also stop for all Blogger/Blogspot blogs by the end of this year...though I can't confirm this. So what does that mean for you and me?

I, myself have some self-hosted WordPress blogs where I use GFC, plus my Tattered Sisters blog here at Blogger. I have lots of followers from GFC, and I have followed hundreds of blogs myself by joining them on their GFC box on their blogs. Unfortunately, once GFC ends, that means that any blogs I have followed using GFC will no longer appear in my Google Reader for my non-Blogger blogs that I follow. So not only do I need to add those blogs to my Google Reader manually so that I don't lose them, I also need to find a way to replace Google Friend Connect on my own blogs so that folks can continue to have an easy way to follow my blogs.

Fortunately, Brent Riggs over at Linky Tools, has created a wonderful new (and free!) widget tool to allow you to continue to get followers to your blogs. I just added mine today here at Tattered Sisters. You can see it at the top of the right column of the blog. You can get your own LinkyFollowers tool by clicking on the image above to be taken to their website. And feel free to follow me using the LinkyFollowers tool on the blog!

Oh, and if you're like me and use Google Reader, and you'd like to know how to Subscribe to blogs without using Google Friend Connect, here's what you do.

Go to your Google Reader, and you should see a Subscribe button at the top that looks like this:

Click on that and a box will open where you can enter a Blog/Feed's URL. Then click Add. That will add that blog to your Reader. And be sure to look at blogs while you're on them for options to subscribe via email, or via RSS Feed. Not all bloggers add those options, but I have both of them in my left column here at Tattered Sisters, to make it easier for people to follow me in those ways. Then it's just a matter of clicking a button or two and you can subscribe to those blogs in your favorite reader (or via email). So always be on the watch for those options when you are visiting blogs!

I really liked GFC, but since it's soon to be a thing of the past, we have to start exploring our other options now!

Do you want to find out who is pinning your fabulous creations you've posted on your blog, your recipes, and other pin-worthy goodies on Pinterest?

If so, it's really easy. Copy the URL below into a new browser window.

http://pinterest.com/source/tatteredsisters.com/

Replace tatteredsisters.com with the URL of your blog, or website or whatever. Then hit Enter on your keyboard. You'll be taken to a Pinterest page that displays every single thing from your blog or website that has been pinned on Pinterest.

How cool is that?

Add a Pin It Button to Your Posts

If you are like me, you may have a love of all things Pinterest. I recently added a Follow Me on Pinterest button link to the left side of my blog, but I wanted to be able to add a Pin It button to each of my posts as well. I found quite a few blogs that had tutorials on how to do this, but wanted to share with you the simplest method I've found for doing so. So this tutorial will show you how to add a Pinterest Pin It button to the bottom right of each post. Note that this is just for Blogger users. Follow the steps below.

1. First you need to download one of the Pin It buttons in my Box.net box below. You can use or make your own too, of course. But I wanted to provide some options for you to start with. So grab the one you like. Upload it to your favorite photo hosting site, and get its URL. You will need it later.

2. Next you need to go into your blog's Template area to edit the blog's HTML. In my blog it says Template, then Edit HTML, but yours might say Design then under that it would say Edit HTML. It just depends on which version of Blogger (old vs new) you are using.

3. Before you go any further BACKUP your blog's Template! You never can be too safe where your blog is concerned. So whenever I am going to edit my blog's HTML, I always back it up first. There is a button or link that says Backup/Restore. Click that and choose the option to Backup Full Template. I'm just going to say that I am not responsible for any issues with your blog as a result of you using my tutorial. But you will have no worries if a problem arises if you have backed up the Template first so that you can Restore it to its previous state if need be.

4. Next you need to click that Edit HTML link. It may give you a warning window about editing the HTML, so click Proceed or OK, or whatever option provided that lets you get to the HTML.

5. Then check the option that says Expand Widget Templates.

6. Now you need to use your browser's Edit > Find menu to search your Template for the following line of code: <div class='post-footer'>

7. Once you have found the footer code, copy and paste in the code below immediately beneath it:

<div style="float: right; margin: 4px;"><a href="javascript:void((function(){var%20e=document.createElement('script');e.setAttribute('type','text/javascript');e.setAttribute('charset','UTF-8');e.setAttribute('src','http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinmarklet.js?r='+Math.random()*99999999);document.body.appendChild(e)})());"><img alt="Pin It" class="aligncenter" src="PutYourImageURLHere" border="0" /></a></div>

Replace the text that says PutYourImageURLHere with the actual URL of the image you uploaded to your photo host in Step 1.

8. Save your Template (or Preview it first to make sure you can see the Pin It button OK, then Save).

Note: If you want to make the Pin It button appear at the bottom left side of your posts instead of the bottom right, then replace <div style="float: right; margin: 4px;"> in that line of code with just <div>.

This is the exact way that I added my own Pin It button here at Tattered Sisters. If you use WordPress.com, I haven't found a way to add the Pin It button there, since there are restrictions and limits where the Template, JavaScript, and HTML are concerned. But if you have a self-hosted WordPress.org blog, there is a Plug In you can add now that I added to my Art Chick Studio blog last night. Click Here for --> WordPress Pin It Plugin

Ok gang, Happy Pinning!

Kissing Kids Primitive Hangtag

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I thought I'd make up a sheet of Primitive Hangtags that would be good for this love-filled holiday. So I've created my Kissing Kids hangtag!

Just click on the image above and you'll be taken to a page with a PDF that contains 6 of the Kissing Kids hangtag, all ready for you to print out. And the printable versions do not have my watermark on them either. Hope you like these Primitive Freebies!

I felt like getting into some Grungy Goods again, so I decided to make this Grungy Candle Bag with Pip Berries.

I started by grungying up a plain muslin bag. Then I added a doily to the front of it, which I also grungy'd up a bit. Then I added some Pip Berries in burgundy and mustard color, along with a grungy Primitive Candle. I stuffed a wee bit of fiber fill into the bag to fill it out a bit, then I added some Spanish moss at the top for some extra texture. And I finished it off with a Rusty Tin star on the front of the bag.

Primitive Snowman

I went into my studio on Friday for a bit and got creative. This Primitive Snowman is one of the things I had fun creating. I love working with Primitive Snowmen because you can decorate with them all winter long.

I made this using three Styrofoam balls of different sizes, which I coated with Snow-Tex, let dry, and then put together using toothpicks to attach each one to the other. I added stems of Pip Berries for the arms and some homespun for a scarf. I also added a Rusty Tin star, a craft carrot nose and I painted on some eyes. The hat is made from a baby sock. And I added some mica flakes to the hat and snowman to give it a little bit of a shimmer. I could have grungy'd him up a bit too, but once I got him to this point I just liked him as-is. So I decided he would stay pure white.

On a side note, in case you're wondering, I don't know where I got the craft carrot nose. I bought it online several years ago after doing a Google search. So if you're wanting to know where to get them just Google for "snowman craft nose" or "craft carrot nose" and you should get plenty of results.

These Dough Ornies are made with my usual Primitive Dough Recipe. But guess what? They are not painted. I don't particularly like painting lots of little dough ornies. That just isn't my idea of fun at all! So instead of painting, I use Powdered Tempera Paint added into the dough when I'm mixing it. I just add a little at a time until I get the color I want. Then I roll out my dough and cut out the hearts with a cookie cutter, and then bake. I usually seal mine with wax, but you could use a clear acrylic spray instead if you wanted to.

Powdered tempera can be found at most art supply stores. But you can also find it online all over the Web. Just do a Google Shopping search for "powdered tempera paint" and you'll get lots of results. And a little goes a long way so you shouldn't have to buy this too often. One little tip though: powdered tempera can make a mess of your hands, so if you want to avoid that, wear gloves while you're mixing your dough!

Time for some dough ornies. And with Valentines Day just around the corner, I guess I've been thinking about hearts. So here are some cute Primitive Bowl Fillers, some of my favorite Dough Ornies to make, that are hearts and stars with buttons on them.

These are made with a silicone candle mold and my Primitive Dough Recipe. They are about 3" long or so and just thick enough to not be super fragile. And they're sealed with wax, of course, which is why they're shiny. I love Primitive Hearts and stars, don't you? And I think the buttons just another nice touch of prim.

Primitive Bath Tea

I wanted to share another Primitive Bath and Body gift you can make. Had planned to post more of these before Christmas but got rather sidetracked with all the holiday hubbub. So I apologize for that. But this is an easy bath item to make and perfect for Primitive Gifts for any time of year. It's my Primitive Bath Tea.

So here is what you need for this Primitive Recipe:

Kraft Tin Tie Bags

Large Heat Sealable teabags 4 x 5.5"

Dried Rose Petals

Dried Lavender

Dried Chamomile

Labels and Jute (or homespun) for the bag

First let me say that all of my resources for these supplies are now listed on my Primitive Crafting Supplies page. And there is no set amount of each dried ingredient for this Bath Tea. I just mix equal parts of each, enough to fit in the teabag. Then I seal the bag with a hot iron, which only takes a couple of seconds. I generally put 3 or 4 in the Kraft Tin Tie bag, however many will fit (just depends on how fat I've made the teabags). Then I punch two holes in the top of the closed Kraft bag and tie some jute or homespun through it and add a label on the front. I also put a smaller label on the back. I put the ingredients on there--and this is a MUST if you plan to sell them because it's Federal Law to list the ingredients in order of quantity, from highest to lowest. And I'll add directions, which is basically just to add one or two bags to hot bath water and let "steep" for several minutes before getting in.

You can vary your ingredients according to your liking, but these are just my favorites to use. And of course you could be very creative with the labels if you like, or even the packaging. Have fun with it!

Primitive Crafting Supplies

Since I get a lot of emails and comments with questions about where I get this supply or that supply, I decided to create a page where I can list all of my favorite resources for Primitive Crafting Supplies.

Please click on the link below to find all of my favorite resources for...

PRIMITIVE CRAFTING SUPPLIES

There is a permanent link to this page in the menu at the top part of the blog, directly under the header graphic. So any time you are wondering where I shop for my crafting supplies, just click up there and you'll always have some good go-to spots for finding yours. I have shopped at many of these sites for years, and I wouldn't recommend them otherwise.

Happy Crafting!

Time for sharing another little bit of my Primitive Christmas home decor. This time it's my Primitive Reindeer. Now these are not handmade; I got them while shopping at a prim store I used to go to in Fort Wayne before it closed. But even though I know they are mass produced little guys, I just loved the look of them and had to have them. They are fun Primitive Finds.

Now really, aren't they just too cute? They have little sticks for legs and they're kind of prim and grungy-looking. I so prefer handmades, but sometimes I see something like this and fall in love. And I keep thinking I'll use them as a pattern/guide to make my own one of these days. I'm so not good with sewing, but it'd be worth a try! Either that or maybe one day I'll come across some that are handmade by someone else and buy those instead.

Folk Art Santas Home Decor

I thought I'd post a photo or two this week of various Primitive Christmas home decor items I have around the house right now. First up are these great Folk Art Santas I have.

I actually found these at a garage sale at least ten years ago. Loved them as soon as I saw them. They look homemade and handpainted, and definitely my style of decor. Such perfect and wonderful Primitive Finds, I must say. This happy little trio sits on a table in my entry hall, greeting everyone who enters our home.

Christmas Tree Hangtag

I promised two free Primitive Hangtags this week, so this is my second one. It's my Christmas Tree Hangtag, which I made using a vintage photo of a Christmas Tree. Just click on the image to view it full size, then right-click to save it to your computer.

Remember that this appears larger on the computer/online than it will be when it's printed. That's just how things work where images are concerned. :) And also remember that all my freebies are free for your Personal Use Only. No commercial use/resale is allowed.

Hope you enjoy this hangtag and can use it on many Primitive Christmas gifts.

Vintage Angel Hangtag

I am all about the Christmas spirit and the spirit of giving at the moment. So to that end I've created more Primitive Freebies to share. This is the first of two Primitive Hangtags I'll be posting this week, both of which feature Vintage Photos. This one is my Vintage Angel Hangtag.

Just click on the hangtag image above to open it to its full size. Then right-click and save it to your computer. Note that it will print smaller than it appears here (images always look bigger on the computer/Web than they do in print). Also remember that my Primitive Freebies are free for your personal, non-commercial use only and are not meant for resale.

Happy Holidays!

Grungy Reindeer Ornie

Well you know I'm addicted to Grungy Goods, and I'm also always trying to find new ways to use supplies I already have, like muslin bags. I always have lots of those. So I came up with this cute little Grungy Reindeer Ornie.

I already had some grungy'd up bags on hand. So I used acrylic paint to add the reindeer's face. Then I used an extra grungy bag to cut out two ear shapes and used a hole punch to punch a hole in the bottom of each one. Then I stuffed the bag with fiberfill and pulled the strings tight. Next I added each ear by pulling the drawstrings through each one on either side, and I tied them and made a knot to hold the ears in place. Then all that was left was to use some Pip Berries to create his antlers.

Now I have a cute little reindeer to add to my collection of Primitive Ornies. And this little guy is hanging on my Primitive Christmas tree!

Primitive Snowman Mitten Ornie

I was in the studio over the weekend and decided to turn a plain white mitten into a Primitive Snowman Mitten Ornie. I just love Primitive Snowmen!

I just took a plain, white mitten and grungy'd it up with some Tattered Sisters Glimmer Mist--that's always the fastest way to grungy something up, and sometimes that's what I want. :) After I grungy'd the mitten, I painted on the eyes, nose and mouth using regular craft acrylics. Then I added the homespun fabric, a rusty bell, and a rusty hook hanger and it was all finished! And now it's hanging on my Christmas tree.

With the holidays upon us, I thought I would share some Primitive Recipes in December for country and Primitive Bath and Body products you might like to make yourself and give as gifts. It's still November as I type this, but I'll try to add a couple more recipes next month.

I'm starting with a Milk Bath recipe. I made a few different types of Milk Baths when I had my retail store and online store too. You can easily Google "milk bath recipe" and get lots of ideas. But the three I'm listing below will give you a place to start. And my photos show you a couple of ways that I packaged my Milk Bath powder.

Milk Bath with Oatmeal

1 Cup Corn Starch

2 Cups nonfat Dry Milk powder

1/2 Cup Baking Soda

1/2 Cup finely ground Oatmeal

Process the Oatmeal in a blender or food processor. And Milk powder and mix. Pour into a bowl and add the remaining ingredients, and mix well. This makes about 4 cups of Milk Bath.

Buttermilk Milk Bath

1/2 Cup nonfat Dry Milk powder

1/2 Cup Dry Buttermilk

1 Cup fine Sea Salt

2 TBSP Cornstarch

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl until they are well blended. This makes about 2 Cups of Milk Bath. Note of caution: dry buttermilk can be stinky! This is not meant to a fragrant bath--it's designed for skin-softening only. You could always increase the dry milk and decrease the buttermilk if you find the buttermilk's odor too overpowering.

3 Ingredient Milk Bath

2 Cups nonfat Dry Milk powder

1 Cup Sea Salt (or Epsom Salt)

1/4 TSP of Skin-Safe Fragrance

Mix the milk powder and the salt, then add the fragrance and mix until well combined.

Directions for use of Milk Baths: Use 3 TBSP or more to bath water to smooth and soften your skin.

I got a request from a prim sister at A Primitive Journey community for a primitive hangtag with a snowman on it. So after playing around a bit I decided to do one better and create two Primitive Hangtags with snowmen! Just click on the images below to view them full size. Then right-click and save them to your computer!

A reader asked me for some ideas for using Vintage Wooden Spools today. I put a lot of thought into it, and made good use of Google, and found lots of inspiring ideas. So I thought I'd share those ideas with all of you, in case anyone else might be interested in this too.

Wooden spools are such wonderful Vintage Goods and are relatively easy to find at antique stores, garage sales, estate sales, and craft shows. They are great for repurposing to be used for Primitive Home Decor. The most obvious use of these great Primitive Finds is as candle holders. But in case you need some more ideas, I've created a collage from photos I found on the Web. And below that you'll find links to the websites where you can find these Vintage Wooden Spool creations. (Be sure to click on the image to view it full size.)

With the holidays upon us, you might be able to use some of these ideas to make some fabulous primitive Christmas gifts!
