After tongue piercing, you will experience swelling and uncomfortable for 3 to 7 days. Cold drinks and ice will help to reduce the soreness and swelling. A longer piece of initial jewelry is recommended which is replaced by a shorter piece of jewelry after healing. The tongue piercing requires extreme care. Anything that enters in the mouth including smoke and food can cause the complications in tongue piercing.

Tragus, a thick cartilage is a fleshy projection at the entrance of the ear. It is located directly in front of the ear canal. Like many body parts, Tragus piercing too is in fashion. Anti-tragus is a piece of cartilage opposite to the ear canal. Even this type of piercing is quite famous. The same process like that of Tragus piercing is applied in the anti-tragus piercing. Bleeding is a typical feature of both types of piercing. But the level of bleeding is low when there is scanty flesh on the Tragus portion. A pierced Tragus can any time from two months to six months to heal. A pierced ant-tragus takes six months to one year for healing. The heeling process of both types of piercing is comfortable and painless if adequate care is taken.

Hydrogen Peroxide, Iodine, Bettadine and Alcohol should be rubbed on the pierced portion in case of Tragus piercing. Saline or sea salt-water should be used to heal the portion of the pierced anti-tragus. In both cases, paper towels or napkins should be used in case of bleeding. Anti-bacterial soaps should be used while bathing or taking a shower as they prevent infection.

The aftercare is very important for any kind of piercing. It is very essential to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness. The basic steps in treating the piercing wound include cleaning the wound and draining the infected material. After that, the heat is applied to enhance the circulation and stimulate the immune response by the body. The antibiotics are applied depending upon the severity and location of the infection. However, the antibiotics are not needed for the abscess causing the majority of secondary infections due to piercing.

The cleaning and drainage of the wound involve watering the wound using a saline and removal of the debris such as pus, dead tissues, dirt and other foreign bodies. In case of infected piercing, it is advised to remove the jewelry. The jewelry can be kept to act as a drain. The large jewelry can be replaced by the small one to allow the adequate drainage. In some cases where there is a remarkable destruction of tissue in the piercing area, it becomes necessary to remove the jewelry permanently. The dead material is cut away to facilitate the complete healing.

Applying the moist heat is the best way for quick healing of the infected piercing. Application of the warm sea salt solutions to the piercing area is beneficial. Avoid manipulation of the jewelry. Prevent other trauma to the area from the clothing. The clothing and sheets that are in the contact with the area should be changed every day. Avoiding alcohol and smoking and intake of nutritional diet are very important to promote the blood circulation in the area.

The antibiotics are required if the infection has spread beyond the piercing area. It leads to cellulitis. It gives rise to the symptoms like extreme tenderness, redness and warmth to touch. It can be prevented by immediate treatment with the antibiotics. The destruction of the cartilage due to infection can be prevented by the early antibiotics treatment.

The industrial or scaffold piercing involves two holes that are connected by a long barbell. It is performed through the cartilage on the upper ear. If two or more industrial piercings are done, then it is preferred as the ear cage. The healing time is from 3 months to 1 year.

The tragus piercing is very popular that involves the thick oval of cartilage. It takes about 8-16 weeks for initial healing and about one year for complete healing. The anti-tragus piercing is done at opposite place of the tragus just above the ear lobe. A conch piercing is performed in the large area of the cartilage just above the earlobes and the anti-tragus on the inner area.

A rook is piercing is done on the thick fold of the cartilage present on the anti-helix above the tragus. The helix piercing involves the piercing through the cartilage on the entire rim of the ear. The snug piercing is done on the outer brim on the inner cartilage just above the anti-tragus. The daith piercing is performed between the rook and the ear canal.

Dermal punch is used to remove larger part of the flesh. Normally it is used in major surgeries. There will be more blood loss while using Dermal punch. But it is useful in piercing where normal needle is not enough. The only advantage in dermal punch is that they will cause less pain to the user.

Contemporary body piercing is done only after taking some precautions so that the health of the person who want to do piercing and the piercer will be protected. At first the piercer will sterilize the tools used for piercing and the jewels that will be worn after piercing. This is done with auto clave. Auto clave is a device used to sterilize above in hot water above 100 degree boiling point that is not possible in normal vessel heating.

Body piercing requires several steps. So the piercer will wear number of gloves for each and every step. Every time he should wear the sterilized gloves in order to protect the health of the client and himself. For instance, if the piercer wears one gloves to sterilize the area of piercing. Then he should remove the gloves to avoid contamination. The sterilization should be done carefully.

Care must be given to select the jewelry material. It is advised that stainless steel and titanium are the best metals to wear in the fresh piercing. Some people suggest yellow or white gold is also better. But plastic jewels are not recommended for fresh piercing. Even though plastic jewels are used in tattoo industry, it is not advisable for body piercing.

Piercing guns are used for piercing ear lobes only. But the wound will not heal in shorter period of time. Also sterilizing piercing guns are impossible. So piercing guns are not normally suggested by experts.

In the world of tattoos, the lower back tattoo is gaining popularity among women today.  These tattoos have the focal point in the center of the back just above the pant line and then follow the natural curve of the woman’s body to fan out toward her hips in a variety of different patterns.  There are also some small lower back tattoos where the tattoo only has the design in the center of the back just above the pant line without any additional scrollwork added to it.  This is the case with some lower back heart tattoos.

When the piercing is completely healed, the short jewelry is used to reduce the risk of damage to the teeth.

Horizontal cheek piercing is another type of cheek piercing. It is not very common. It involves the piercing from the edge of the mouth to the back of the head. It is a type of surface piercing done with a curved barbell.

The cheek piercing requires a great aftercare. Oral care is very essential in case of cheek piercing. It is advised to rinse your mouth with the medical-grade mouthwash after every meal to avoid the infection. Application of ice and other cold liquids can help to reduce swelling.

The cartilage piercing includes the inner cartilage piercing or outer cartilage piercing. The jewelry used for the cartilage piercing involves the captive bead rings, circular barbells and barbells. The jewelry is usually made from the non-toxic metals like surgical steel, gold, niobium and titanium. These metals are tolerable by the body and there is less possibility of rejection. The jewelry should be sterilized. If a bar is used for the cartilage piercing, it should be longer as the piercing gets swollen.

The piercing should be done perpendicular to the tissue to decrease the stress on the tissue.

If you develop the symptoms like yellowish or greenish pus, foul odor of pus, redness, pain, warm in touch and swelling, then they indicate the infection to the piercing site. It should be immediately treated.

The aftercare is very important in case of cartilage piercing. It should be cleaned twice a day using the antibacterial soap. Don’t use the salts or antibiotics ointments for the piercing. Don’t apply the sun tan lotion, baby oil, tea tree oil or other skin products on the healing piercing.
