Gabe Ripley: 3 Days of Bio at Off the Map Tattoo, fun fun fun

Well, its been super busy around here. Off the Map Tattoo is SLAMMING. It seems our gracious clientel kept the winter months busy (we did 30-40% more tattoos last winter than the previous!), but now spring is in the air and people are walking in and making deposits, appointments, and setting times for their free consultations like its going out of style. The tattoos we have booked in the last week are huge too... sleeves, back tattoos, and tons of cool custom tattoos walking in. Thanks a ton everyone!!!

It's going to help us this first year of producing events west of the Mississippi for sure. Speaking of, the Paradise Artist Retreat is coming right up at the insanely beautiful Tamaya Resort in New Mexico. We leave a week from tomorrow, and hope to see you there! Im also busy promoting the Chicago edition of the Worldwide Tattoo Conference. Dont snooze, tickets are going fast. Of course they are, this is an oppertunity to learn from Guy Aitchison, Nick Baxter, Boris, Bob Tyrrell, Jeff Gogue, and Alex De Pase! Oh, and the point of this blog, in between bouts of computer work I am settign up "3 days of bio" where we will feature 5 slamming bio guest tattooers. We have 3 confirmed, representing Germany, Los Angeles, and San Fransisco. Need to finalize two more guests and then we can announce and promote properly. I foresee a bio version of TattooNOW in our future.

Oh, I also forgot to mention a few fits of cleaning up TattooNOW seems to have helped out traffic dramatically. We broke past 500,000 unique visitors a month yesterday, and this traffic should keep up. In the past we have broken 1 million unique visitors a month and we hope to do the same again soon! I swear, a few more years of work, and we get to talk religion and politics all the time, until then, get back to work!

Relentless Ink is currently looking for an experienced tattoo artist!

We ask that you have a strong portfolio and at least 2 years verifiable shop experience with references. GREAT people skills and a kick ass positive attitude as well as a strong work ethic and serious commitment to the industry and to your craft are also required. We draw each tattoo for our clients, and do not have Flash on our walls so you'll need to be confident in your drawing skills and versatile in all styles.
This is NOT an apprenticeship--we are not looking for an artist that needs training. We need a good all-around artist comfortable doing most styles and pieces from the gate--we do walk-ins and scheduled appointments. A following is preferred though certainly not required.

Iron Lotus Body Art: deutschland bound

So the time is fast approaching, going to be in Koln (Cologne) Germany on March 5th to do a guest spot at Stigmata Inc. Tattoos Piercing and Body Modification... http://www.myspace.com/stigmatainc. I can't to meet Marcus and the rest of the crew there! Also while in Cologne I will be making the trip to where my family origins are as well as where a castle which still holds my family name is located. I've been told it dates back at least 13 -1500 years....and because I'm an eternal daydreamer, I have found myself these past few months fantasizing about unlocking some secret passage within the castle to reveal a wonderful hidden treasure...so I'll let you all know!!

So in the last news post I said that Billy will be available to pierce this weekend at the shop, but he will actually be joining Evan and Shane at the Philadelphia tattoo convention. Feel free to call or stop in to make an appointment for the following week to get pierced! He is normally available between 7pm-9pm Tuesday-Saturday, but make sure to come by or call ahead to schedule an appointment with him as he works by appointment only. Off the Map Tattoo: Pin-Ups and Flowers and Super Cute Animals, OH MY!

Our guest artists often steal our news item spot light, but we can't forget about our killer full time tattooers! Tim Senecal is one of our four amazingly talented in house artists, and with 10 years of tattooing under his belt, he takes the experienced cake! Tim's favorite subject matter includes fine lady pin-ups, cutesy animals, and illustrative floral tattoos.

Tim did this roller derby pin-up tattoo on a super badass derby girl while we were at the Hell City Tattoo Fest last year.

One of our favorite clients, Don, got this goat tattoo for one of his peanut butter and jelly loving kids.

And who doesn't love pretty flower tattoos, just cause they're pretty! Cherry blossom tattoos have become quite popular, and Tim put his own style into this one.

The Paradise Artist Retreat is now just 2 weeks away. If you're a tattooer or artist, don't sleep on this amazing opportunity to enrich your skills in a vacation atmosphere. I'll be running a few portfolio critique sessions, and teaching a seminar about the secrets of glazing and layering with oil paint. So come study, learn and create art with us amidst the peacefulness of the New Mexico desert. it should be a really unique experience, as last year's event proved--very different from the typical tattoo convention scene. This month I'm also a participant in a collaboraitve ArtFusion event hosted by Last Rites Gallery in NYC. Though unfortunately I will not be at the event, I was one of several artists selected to contribute a drawing foundation for a painting through the mail. This will be completed at the event by a team of incredible artists, then auctioned for charity. Get more info here.

Around the new year I received a welcome package from my friends at the CrimethInc. Far East HQ in Oregon, containing a new batch of super limited edition bookmarks to promote the recent relaunch of this website. These were gorgeously hand-printed using an old-fashioned press, on thick archival cardstock, and feature my new logo and a backing of circular symbols representing the cultural memes that I and my artwork stand for. This assemblage of symbols tells the story of my personal paradigm and the awareness I promote through my creation of visual images. Reminiscent of Egyptian heiroglyphs and other symbolic ancient stone carvings, and created in homage to that primal human tradition of coomunication through sybmbols, I call this the NB Metameme. These weren't cheap to print, but they're not cost-effective enough to sell through mail-order, so unfortunately they'll only be available if you see me in person at an event, for a small donation while supplies last.

Also just released are the impressive art books Animal Ink and 2012: The End Is Here, both published by various friends of mine and featuring tattoos, artwork, and writing by yours truly. Order each through their respective links above.

Inkaholics, The Rogue Elephant the Rogue Elepahnt: A busy winter and a new baby.

So it is definitely time for a news update. It has been a crazy and especially good winter. My wife and I had our first child in November which led to a special holiday season for us. Our daughter’s name is Sophia Grey Hendrickson (we call her Sophie all the time though). She is already such a sweet, good-natured baby. Once we told everyone we were having a baby, we heard numerous horror stories about the crying, fussing and missing sleep. I am happy to report that it has been a fairly smooth and easy transition thus far. Life definitely has more meaning now. I took some time off work after Sophie was born and returned with a refreshed outlook on life. I have been working on some nice sized Japanese pieces along with some others I am really enjoying and excited to see the end product. Our shop, Inkaholics Rogue Elephant, hosted an art show at the local, downtown scene for the monthly art walk. The art show was held at the Blood Orange Gallery (http://bloodorangeinfoshop.blogspot.com/).

I, along with other artists from Inkaholics, Rogue Elephant and Elizabeth Street Tattoo, will be participating in the art show created by Oceanic Awareness Collaboration (OAC) (http://www.oacollabo.com/) on February 18th at the White Walls Gallery 835 Larkin street, San Francisco, Ca 94109. OAC is a non-profit organization that brings awareness to the great pacific garbage patch and other environmental issues by raising funds through art and music.

I have also been painting quite a bit with water color. This medium is fairly new to me. I started working with water colors last year and have since created six or seven pieces. I really like the process - it is quick, easy and very forgiving which makes it perfect to fill my time in between clients. Some of my oils can take months to finish and at times can become quite the chore which causes me to shy away from the whole process at times. With water colors I can get ideas out faster and therefore create more tangible work that pertains to tattooing. All that to say, I have decided to paint a couple water colors each month and offer them up to my clients as tattoo options for a very reduced rate. This allows me to explore my own new ideas and tattoo exactly what I want. Additionally, the customer can receive a nice tattoo for a steal-worthy price. I have already painted three - all of which have been tattooed or are scheduled to be tattooed. I will post future water colors I want to tattoo on my news blog. If you are interested in receiving one, let me know…you might be surprised by the price. I will be updating my news page and blog every couple of weeks. Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well! The shop renovations went amazingly well.. the lobby is more inviting and comfortable, and now we have ample room for when we're ready to take on more badass tattoo artists! Pictures will be posted in the next few days once we complete all of the finishing touches, but you might as well come check it out for yourself!

Evan was just recently featured in an issue of Center City Ink, a new tattoo magazine to the scene!

Don't forget that Evan and Shane will be jammin at the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention next weekend--2/10-2/12, but Jay and Mike will be at the shop normal business hours for all of your tattoo needs, and Billy will be available to pierce from 7pm-9pm on Friday and Saturday (make sure to call ahead to make an appt).
