It was really lovely and I enjoyed it a lot.

I guess my disappointment - it's a small one, really - is that my favorite aspect of the book was missing. When I was a kid, my favorite thing was how Max's room turned into this forest. I missed that a lot. It really was the single most memorable part of the book to me - that magical idea that your own bedroom could turn into this other world. Having Max run off to the place was disappointing. It changed it for me.

Except for that, it was a really beautiful movie and I was completely charmed by it.

Last night we (Gina, Kirsten, Mom and I) took Tante Joan for fondue at the Melting Pot in Hoboken to celebrate TJ's birthday. Somehow, TJ managed to sneakily pay for it. I found that out today. (Yes, Mom, I can keep a secret real well.)

Grr. It's impossible to pay for anything where Tante Joan is concerned. Not complaining - she's ridonkulously generous - but for her own birthday I expect to be able to treat.

Today I met up with the women in my tiny family again and we drove to Tarrytown, NY to see the Flying Karamazov Brothers. They're a family favorite. We've enjoyed them since the 1987 PBS airing of their version of Comedy of Errors at Lincoln Center. There's only one original member of the troupe left, but the new guys are really good. They put on a really entertaining show. I am no hipster; I enjoy the jugglers.

Bye, Hallowe'en faerie.

Dominatrix Joanna

Finishing up Halloween, see the rest of my pics here.

Our Jack

<div style="float: right; (a gift from my aunt to my sister and me.) Afterwards, Kirsten convinced me to get my first manicure in 17 years (and my second professional manicure, ever.) Then I went to my aunt's apartment and saw her newly-remodeled bathroom, which put the fancy spa to shame, it's so posh and amazing. Her new toilet is an unbelievable robot from the future, via Japan. You would not believe the amenities on this thing. She's so fancy that we call her Flovenia.

My mom's birthday was celebrated at a sort of hipster-y, kitsch-y Polish joint in Greenpoint, where I gorged on goulash and steak tartare.

I also managed to lose weight this week, despite my recent vacation-y indulgences.

My mom loved the iPod we got her.

Governor's pond on a pretty day

Governor's pond on a pretty day
Originally uploaded by Tavie
Somewhat belatedly, pictures from our trip to Williamsburg last weekend.

We had one full day there - Sunday - the day of perfect, glorious, bright blue October weather.

Jiggety jog. Williamsburg, Virginia. Colonial Williamsburg is one of my favorite vacation destinations and this is the perfect time of year for it. Virginia is so beautiful in the autumn. It's a girls-only road trip starring my mom and sister, my best friend and her mom.

I'm going to try and stay on track with the Weight Watchers... which means no peanut soup. I just have to remember that I've had peanut soup many times, I know what it tastes like, and it's just not necessary in my life right now.

Other than the food, I expect to have a great time. That is, if my sister starts talking to me again.

Goblazers

 Goblazers
Originally uploaded by Tavie
This is my friend, Goblazers. Goblazers is the most lovable little chihuahua mix in the world, and she and I spent a lot of time cuddling.

Our good friends, Beth and Nathan, were also visiting, and the four of us had a lot of fun. I could've wandered around Powell's for just about ever, built myself a little cabin made of books and just lived there permanently. It's a wonderful place. Yesterday, Erin's cute boyfriend drove us to the beach. It was the beach from The Goonies. Goonies never say die.
