I’ve been trying to get a job since the beginning of fall semester, and I continue to be astounded at how difficult it is to find a part-time or temporary job in Tallahassee for a college student, especially one on campus. I figured with so many buildings and facilities that need people to run them and with the number of students who transfer, study abroad or graduate every year that finding a temporary job would be as easy as going to the supermarket and picking one off the shelf. But, that’s not the case.

www.sfasyou.com/2012/02/16/college-graduates-lots-of-them...

The one thing college students are concerned with after graduating is getting a good job that pays good money. The other thing their concerned with is paying their student debt. According to the College Board in 2010 “the average college student has accumulated approximately ,000 in student loan debt by graduation day”.

This is not a fun fact but in the current state of the economy approximately 60% of graduates between the ages of 21 and 29 live with their parents and many of them are either unemployed or working jobs for minimum wage.

Allison Percival graduated from SFA last May. Since she graduated she has been working full time at a minimum wage job that her mom helped her get. She has sent out more than 200 job applications, and figured her odds were pretty good at landing a good job related to her field. Percival had an internship under her belt, had been working her whole college career ,and she had her degree which only cost her a cool ,000.That was nine months ago.

With her 6 month grace period over it’s time to start paying her student loans. Percival said “I pay roughly 0 a month.” Her parents pay the other half. Even with her parents help and her working full time, minimum wage is roughly ,000 a year after taxes. That means that almost a third of her income goes straight to student loans. If she didn’t have assistance from her parents and was living on her own she would only have about ,000 a year to live off of that’s 6 a month. That’s less than the monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in Nacogdoches. That’s a tough budget to live on. Especially since most college graduates expect a nice lifestyle because they went to college. Because of this “Approximately 14 percent of all students that graduate end up defaulting on their loans within the first three years of graduating”.

Unfortunately she is fitting into what is now becoming the norm. Some blame it on the economy and some on the worsening quality of the American college education. But the facts are that “U.S. college students spend 24% of their time sleeping and 51% of their time socializing but only 7% of their time studying”. Statistics show that today students spend approximately 50% less time studying than college students a few decades ago, and I’m pretty sure it’s not because their all so much smarter than past generations.

On top of all of this college tuition continues to rise at a rate that surpasses that of inflation. According to a recent CBS News article “Average tuition and fees at public colleges rose 8.3 percent this year and, with room and board, now exceed ,000 a year”, according to the College Board. You may also be glad to know that the cost of college textbooks have tripled over the past decade. Dr. Gary Mayer Professor at SFA said that he finds the textbook industry “appalling” with new editions coming out every year with very little additions in terms of material but costing upwards of 0 new.

It also doesn’t help that there aren’t too many jobs out there for college graduates. Many job applications have listed that you need a “minimum of 3-5 years of experience” or the increasingly popular “recent college graduates need not apply”. Unfortunately this is a product of our struggling economy. With so many people getting laid off the pool of potential employees that companies are looking at hiring consist of candidates who not only have real world experience opposed to the average student having none they’re also willing to work for less. Bottom line if possible find someone to pay for your college. Apply for all the scholarships and grants you can. Last year at the regional American Advertising Federation competition there were two 00 scholarships being given away. Only four people applied out of four States so make sure and look at all your options they might not be as unattainable as you think.

You will be glad to know that not all the stories have unhappy endings. Percival did end up getting a job that is related to her field, which will allow her to live fairly comfortably and have her loans paid off in ten years. There are plenty of other success stories as well. June Parker the new supervisor of the SFA Graphic Shop in the Baker Pattillo Student Center got her job almost immediately after graduating. She had worked at the shop for a good while as a student and showed strong work ethic. Ralph LaRue the Assistant Director said that her skills and prior experience running the shop made her a perfect candidate and that he did not regret hiring a student fresh out of college.

I have also spoken with a number of different people who gave tips about finding a job after college. Dr. Gary Wilcox from the University of Texas in Austin has some tips about a job in advertising. He said that they look for many bright people but what they really look for is leaders. People who were active and well rounded in College, those who joined clubs went to competitions became officers and had internships. Many people think that their degree is all they need, but in an economy where “ there are more than 100,000 janitors with college degrees” and “approximately 365,000 cashiers have college degrees” you have to pull out all the stops. Some other important job tips such as keeping your resume updated and using contacts can be found here. There’ also plenty of useful resume and application tips such as keeping it simple and tailoring your resume for each specific job you apply for. Other tips can be found here. It’s also good to remember that many of your professors often know people in your related field and can provide internship opportunities and possible job contacts.

The job market is very competitive right now so you have to bring as much as you can to the table. Networking is very important as they say it all comes down to “who you know”. Remember college isn’t a guarantee to a good paying job just a tool to help you get there.

While surfing the Web, I came across an advice thread for FSU students written by alumni. Most of it was obvious: study, go to class, party responsibly, etc. But, there was one piece of advice that stuck out. It read: “Get a job so you won’t be that guy who doesn’t have one.”

Easier said than done.

One thing I learned from job hunting is that some of the positions on campus have strings attached. You can work as a clerk at Strozier, but only if you’re willing to work from four in the morning until eight. You can work as an attendant at Leach, if you’re willing to commit yourself to it for at least three semesters, one of which would have to be summer. And you can definitely work at the Oglesby Union, if you’ve put in some unpaid volunteer time first.

Even when you fully employ all your resources, from résumé critiquing at the Career Center to online networking, it still isn’t enough sometimes. At the Part-Time Job Fair, which is supposed to be the perfect place to match up the employers with the unemployed, the number of people wanting applications compared to the number of people handing them out was insane. I showed up before the fair even opened with several copies of a critiqued résumé, an application already filled out and dressed in my best, thinking I would impress potential employers by being prompt and prepared and hopefully have a job before the day was out. Not only did plenty of other students have the same idea as me, but most of the employers who were handing out applications said they weren’t planning to hire anyone until several months later.

Getting a job that will pay your bills, but won’t make you miserable is a challenging task for anyone in this economy, and FSU students are no exception. It’s easy to get discouraged when you apply for a handful of jobs and never hear back from any of them.

Why? Where did you go wrong? What do the lucky people who get hired have that you don’t?

The best ways to secure a job are to network as much as you can (sometimes it really is all about who you know) and sign up for volunteer positions in whatever you think you’d be good at. Chances are employers will be much more interested if they don’t have to pay you, and if you do well as a volunteer, they’ll already know they can trust you to get the work done and when a position opens up, your name will have moved up on their priority list.

The way to work hard and make money is to first work hard and not be concerned with money. Hopefully, by the time we graduate, and can actually put college degrees on our résumés, that will change.

Sometimes it may not be easy to control your finances. Sometimes you are simply unaware that the debts you keep putting off to pay are accumulating as well as the interest rate. There are many reasons that you may end up having bad credit such as:
i. You do not pay your bills on time
ii. You miss payments or default on a debt
iii. You do not pay your credit card bills in full at the end of the month
If you find yourself currently or frequently being in any one of the above situations, you might be setting yourself up for bad credit. When you have bad credit, you might have a tough time finding a lender who may be willing to approve your bad credit debt consolidation loans. If you know you are having bad credit, the first thing you might want to do is to not panic. You are most probably not the only one in this particular situation.
Applying for bad credit debt consolidation loans can be quite difficult. So you might have to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically to get out of your debt. You may want to acknowledge to yourself that, getting out of your bad credit might take quite some time. So, you might have to keep track of your monthly expenses and learn to live frugally. You may also want to evaluate your own financial situation and decide for yourself if you might need credit counseling. If you do, you might want to be extra careful in choosing the right financial counselors or advisors because you would not want to end up getting advice from unqualified people. You may want to take time to fully research these so-called credit counseling companies and if your gut tells you that the promises they make are too good to be true, they most probably are.
It might also be a good idea for you to keep track of your bad credit debt, by compiling all your current and overdue bills. You might want to call your creditors to negotiate a settlement, show them that you are serious with your intention to pay your bills and inquire if they are willing to work out a payment schedule that allows you to pay less than usual, until you have the means to get back to the normal payment schedule. Most lenders will be more likely to accommodate to your request rather than letting your debt lay dormant until they can no longer get even half the money you owe them. From a business point of view, they are more likely willing to lose a little bit of money from what you originally owe them rather than lose it all.
It is also advisable that you consult with a bank that you already have an account with and ask if they would be willing to let you apply for a small loan, so you could catch up on some of your monthly payments. If they would be willing to approve you for a debt consolidation loan, that is even better and might work out to your full advantage. However, this is where your credit score comes in. In order to qualify for a debt consolidation loan you are normally required to have a good credit score. But if you are already in a bad credit situation, chances are that your credit score might be less than satisfactory. So you might want to consider improving your credit score by paying off smaller debts that you can afford to pay and build up your credit score little by little.
If your bad credit situation is caused by credit card usage, you might want to consider adopting a credit card consolidation program, to enable you to pay off your credit card debts all at once. The idea is, to apply for one single loan to pay off all your credit card providers. By doing this, you will have only one single creditor , usually at a lower interest rate. You may also have the option of transferring all your credit card balances into one single card, preferably one with the lowest interest rate.
Generally, your best bet to getting yourself out of bad credit situation is to pull yourself together and take all the necessary steps to be rid of your bad credit altogether. Although it might be quite challenging at first, with the right state of mind and determination you might actually be able to change your entire future.

issue by Landon : I want to become a corporate lawyer. What courses should I take in my first cycle?
My plan is to attend the University of Alberta. As you already know, it is not written in stone courses you take in your first cycle. However, I am planning to enroll in the Bachelor of Commerce with a major in economics and business law. After five years of this program, I'll have a 3-year program with studies of law pretain to be a corporate lawyer. Did I make a good choice? Please give me your opinion.
Best answer:

 response by Steve K
Honestly, it does not really matter what you take classes to get you to law school. Of course, if you want to be a corporate lawyer, having a basic knowledge of the world will help, but it is not nécessaire.Par example, I worked in commercial litigation for three years, and I a BA in philosophy, and no formal training in the business world. On the other hand, I am (was) a very good lawyer, and (b) very good with contracts. I can assure you, I do not know the first thing about contracts or property (real and intangible) before I came to school droit.D the other hand, my degree will prepare me for school right, because I have learned to think in an organized manner, and to consider the problems of more than one or two tages.Comme a side note, many law schools are looking for non-traditional majors (music , mathematics, arts, science) in their candidates, if you have a loving relationship / aptitude for one of these areas, you might consider some way in this direction. If nothing else, you'll enjoy your time in college more if you study something you really like.

Tips On How To Eliminate Credit Card Debt, Forever!

The slack lending standards of banks and credit card companies leading up to the global credit crises enabled many people to live the high life and even invest for great profits in the stock or housing market. However no one wanted to believe the good times could end so soon and so abruptly! The side effects of this crises also meant drastic loss of jobs, income and savings. Caught off guard many families and individuals like yourself have found themselves hopelessly over their heads in debt with balances they can never hope to pay off and mounting monthly payments that simply overwhelm them. So how can you eliminate credit card debt?

Compounding the credit card debt problem is that credit card companies have continued to raise interest rates and simultaneously cut limits, leaving many caught short and in the worst cases people have found themselves stranded abroad with no money and no warning their creditors where going to chop their spending limit. These are the powerful lessons our parents all warned us about. 'Don't buy it unless you have the cash for it', 'Don't borrow money' etc. Know we can see the pitfalls, but you still need a solution to eliminate credit card debt that you have already amassed.

One thing to keep in mind when trying to eliminate credit card debt is avoiding setting yourself up for even tougher times. Having to resort to bankruptcy or using the kids college fund to pay down and eliminate credit card debt may be irreversible decisions you will never forgive yourself for. If your credit card debt isn't too large and you still have enough income to meet monthly payments without jeopardizing your home or other assets, you should make a plan to start to eliminate credit card debt. making the minimum payments will never eliminate credit card debt. You can gradually eliminate credit card debt by paying a little extra on your cards every month. The best way to do this is by attacking to cards with the highest interest rates first. If possible eliminate credit card debt one at a time, reducing your amount of creditors owed. You can also freeze or cancel cards that have annual fees to avoid extra debt. You may also be able to transfer balances from high interest rate cards to those with lower rates, but avoid taking out new cards and lines of credit that can encourage you to borrow more.

Unfortunately for most these days loss of income and investments means that trying to eliminate credit card debt or even maintain the minimum monthly payments with their current monthly is pretty much impossible. if this is your situation there are options. Debt settlement companies offer a great solution to eliminate credit card debt without the serious side effects of bankruptcy. It's not for everyone, but enrolling in debt settlement can help you eliminate credit card debt and get back on track quickly. Whatever you do the sooner you look into your options and take action the better off you will be. Most importantly once you have eliminated your credit card debt, commit to staying out of debt. Don't give these credit card companies the benefit of feeding off of you. Set yourself a realistic monthly budget and discipline yourself to live within your means.

Study notes for Ohio bar examination, February 1993

While cleaning out our garage a few weeks ago, I came across this yellow legal pad full of my handwritten study notes for the Ohio bar examination in February, 1993. The bar examination is an instrument of cruel and diabolical torture which, in my view, should be outlawed by the Geneva Convention, and probably other international treaties and conventions as well. I have sat for two such examinations, with successful results both times. (The other was in Utah in July, 1983.) I spent about 700 hours studying for the Ohio exam, and ended up with one of the highest scores among the 500-plus applicants who took it when I did, but that didn't matter; I wouldn't have cared if I had a much lower score, as long as I passed the thing.

I no longer practice law, having discovered the hard way that I hated the practice even more than I did the preparation for it; and while I don't rule out the possibility of taking the Arizona exam at some point, I think that is highly unlikely. I have no intention of ever practicing again here or anywhere else, and at age 53, I just don't think I have a third bar exam in me at this point.

This particular section of my notes covered Federal income taxation, which was a topic on the Ohio exam but not Utah's. Although not quite as terrifying as I had intended it to be, the death's-head emblem near the upper left-hand corner expresses my dread of this particular subject. I briefly entertained fantasies about becoming a tax attorney -- until I took a tax class in law school and quickly concluded that whatever my future entailed, it would not center around this complex and arcane subject.
