When you tire of the “same old, same old” blog rolls, you can hope into Melissa Plaut’s blog for a real glimpse of adventure. Plaut is a cab driver in New York City, home to over 40,000 taxi drivers. Less than 1% of those drivers are women, so Plaut’s blog offers a fairly unique perspective on a career that has been a fixture of Big Apple daily life for nearly a century. Writing about her experiences and posting pictures of her various encounters with fares and situations in the city, Plaut brings humanity and emotion to a job millions of people in the city see as just a necessary evil. She describes the locker room where the drivers gather to await the beginning of shifts and describes her interactions with the other cabbies, almost all of them men. During the grueling 12-hour shifts and traffic snarls she endures, Plaut eats brings peanuts for snacking in the cab and stops for hot dogs for meals. By the end of a shift her fingernails are black from opening doors, loading luggage, and handling money all day. Plaut grew up in suburban Pomona, New York, with parents who were both teachers. She attended the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1997 and moving to New York City. After working for several years as a writer and copy editor at an advertising agency, she was laid off about a year ago. She couldn’t reconcile herself to returning to office work, so she decided to stop agonizing over what she was going to do with her life. Instead, she got a job driving a cab. Although she hopes it isn’t going to be a lifelong job, she’s treating the experience as an adventure. Plaut spent about $400 going through the tedious licensing process, which includes a medical exam, three 8-hour classes of taxi school, an English proficiency exam, being fingerprinted, and passing a final test and receiving her license. Driving a taxi isn’t the easiest job in the world, and Plaut considers it a means to an end, not a career move. One thing that is helping her to cope with the stresses of the job is being able to chronicle them in her blog, which she started in August. Reading about her adventures gives her site visitors?some of whom are nowhere near New York City?a chance to experience the Big Apple firsthand without ever going there. Her website gets nearly 1000 hits on some days, and even more now that her blog has been written about by the Associated Press and spotlighted on an ABC news program. The sights, sounds, and people Plaut writes about bring the city to life in a way that sometimes is more vivid than actually being there. Passengers’ stories are diverse and colorful, such as the young girl traveling to the hospital because she had a sea urchin stuck in her foot, which she had picked up while vacationing in Puerto Rico. Or the young suburban couple who wanted to smoke a joint in the cab while they were “waiting for the mushrooms to kick in.” And just after the Red Sox beat the Yankees in the World Series, a couple got in her cab with the woman obviously in distress. The woman was sobbing, saying “Oh my God?I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it.” Concerned, Plaut asked her if everything was okay, and the woman tearfully replied, “Oh yes! We’re Red Sox fans!” Plaut says she has never been really frightened by a passenger, but traffic accidents do scare her. Once her driver’s side mirror was whacked by a passing city bus, and once she saw another cab get hit by an 18-wheeler. Last month one of her posts detailed a high-speed car chase she “unwittingly drove into” while bringing a tourist into the city from the airport. “When my heart finally started beating again,” her post says, “I turned to my passenger and said, ‘Welcome to new York!’”

Sebastien McKervey, 12 years old, was pretty sure he’d never be able to read. He’s a really nice kid, smart, but really low self-esteem. He wasn’t into trying more things that were supposed to help. He had basically given up. On August 31, Father Todd Angele of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Priory in Calgary, Alberta arranged for Jeanette Kasper to teach the one-day workshop “Read to Your Potential” to all of the teachers at their affiliated private school, St. John Bosco. Sebastien’s mother is a teacher there. On a hunch, Father Todd suggested that she bring Sebastien along. Sebastien will tell you that he only went because “Mom said I had to.” Sebastien started the class at 75 words per minute which, when multiplied by his comprehension of 33%, gives a functional reading rate of just 31 wpm. By the end of the day, he was reading at 451 wpm with 75% comprehension! Sebastien had better results than any of the teachers in the room and went from a functional reading rate of 31 wpm to 328 wpm! That was 2 weeks ago. Dyslexia, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), learning disabilities. The number of children having trouble learning to read has risen dramatically over the last decade. Schools now fund Resource Teachers to read these children their test questions, as opposed to continuing the struggle to teach them to read. None of the teachers at St. John Bosco Private School would ever have guessed that a reading program could have such dramatic results with dyslexia. Jeanette Kasper, owner of Be You Inc., a Calgary-based training company, and facilitator of “Read to Your Potential,” explains why this process works. “The way we are taught to read, pronouncing every letter, every syllable, every word, is how we learn to do everything. Remember learning to ride a bike? Remember talking yourself through it? “Put this hand here. Balance like this. Put this foot her.” Now, when you pick up a bike, there’s no voice. You just grab the bike and go. It’s a habit.” Says Kasper, “The way we all read now, with that little voice in the back of our head pronouncing all of the words out loud, shows that reading has never been transferred out of the learning center in the “Thinking Brain” and into the habit centre in our “Safety Brain.” Every time we pick up a book, it’s as though we’re still “learning to read.” No wonder so many of us read so slowly and have so much trouble concentrating on what we’re are reading. And, without good focus, we can’t remember anything, even names of people we meet!” Apparently, it’s the transfer of our reading function to the “safety brain” or amygdala, that establishes reading as a habit and we don’t have to think about habits. “It’s like riding a bike,” as the saying goes and, surprisingly, it works, even with dyslexia. “In a three-hour session, just learning the reading technique that transfers reading from the “Thinking Brain” to the “Safety Brain,” everybody doubles their reading speed and remembers 50% more,” reports Kasper. “And then you practice.” We checked in with Sebastien September 16th, 2 weeks after he left the class excited to practice at home. He’s now reading at 1200 wpm with 75% comprehension, a functional reading rate of 900 wpm! And he took a week off practicing because he picked up the flu bug going around. He was one of the children in the Resource Room program at St. John Bosco, up until now. When questioned by an astonished tutor as to whether he’d hit his head over the summer, Sebastien proudly announced, “That’s just the way I read, now.” Sebastien McKervey is truly motivated. Along with investing the time and money to have the teachers and priests attend the course, Father Angele also offered an incentive of $100 to the person who showed the most progress throughout their 21-day practice period. Sebastien says he’s looking forward to spending that $100! St. John Bosco Private School is now planning to put all of their students through the “Read to Your Potential” program by mid-October and plans to track their progress through their report card marks. Father Todd and Father Jean Violette, District Superior, who traveled from Toronto to take part in the class, are intrigued with the potential of this program to increase marks and learning abilities in their students at schools across the country. They were both very pleased with their own results after taking this program, but they’ll be even more pleased to tell you that Sebastien is now out-reading them all. Another important attraction that people getting to Rome can see are the remains of the roman city walls built by the emperor Aurelian in the third century AD. Not everybody know that these city walls were built by the roman soldiers and have the huge extension of eleven miles with almost 400 military watch towers. Remains of this archaological belt around Rome are everywhere including along the Appian way. Rome’s airport, called Fiumicino or Leonardo da Vinci, is located in the west of Rome, at the end of the Tiber river and is the major airport in Italy. From this airport it takes about 40 miutes to reach downtown entering the western district of Rome called Ostiense. It’s also good to remember that there are several minor airports in Italy that have now found a niche market in serving low-cost airlines. The single important monument to be seen on the Ostiense area is the basilica of saint Paul outside the walls, one of the four patriarchal churches in Rome. This church belongs to the Vatican ( that is to say it’s not italian territory but part of the vatican in Rome ) and , before it burned to the ground in 1823, the original basilica of the fourth century surpassed even saint Peters in grandeur and lavish decoration. When instead people drive to Rome because they landed at the minor airport of Ciampino, located in the south of Rome, the main sights to admire is the roman acqueduct built by the roman emperor Claudius in the first century AD and the Appian way, the queen and the first of the roman consular roads. The appian way was built in the IV century AD in around 20 years to connect Rome and the minor colony of Capua, located near Naples and was used by the Romans to bring the legions until Greece.

Developing intuition starts by realizing you have it already. If you’ve ever had a hunch about something, that was intuition. Intuition is just your mind using more than what you are consciously aware of. But can you trust your intuition? How do you improve it? Developing Intuition In Three Steps 1. Recognize it and encourage it. 2. Study it to make it more trustworthy. 3. Give it good information to work with. Gary Kasparov will admit that a computer can calculate chess positions many moves further ahead than he can. Yet he still beats the best computers out there because of his intuitive grasp of the game. His experience allows him to combine analysis with a “sense” of which move is best. Try to find areas in your own life where you intuitively operate. Of course, intuition is also a warning device. Both my wife and I felt we shouldn’t get on that bus in Ecuador. This is no psychic power. Crowded busses are prime locations for pickpockets. A drunk man was bumping into people repeatedly. We didn’t consciously pay attention, but these things registered in our minds, warning us. We felt “something isn’t right here.” When we ignored our intuition, I was robbed. When I bought a conversion van, I saw them all over. Maybe you’ve had a similar experience. Looking for and recognizing a thing trains your mind to find more of it. The same process will happen if you watch for your intuition - you’ll start to see more of it. Unfortunately, a strong hunch can be for irrelevant reasons too. If you were hit by a yellow taxi as a child, you might have “intuitive” hunches not to get into yellow taxis for the rest of your life. So even learning to recognize your intuition and encourage it may leave you wondering when to trust it. Study Your Intuition Start questioning your hunches. If we had asked why we felt bad about that bus, it may have occurred to us, “Oh yeah, crowded busses are a bad idea - we know that.” Study your strong feeling about that taxi, and you might say, “Oh, it’s just my fear of yellow taxis.” Get in the habit of paying attention to and studying your intuitive feelings. Where does your intuition work best? If you’re always right about your intuitive stock picks, give a little credence to them. On the other hand, if your hunches about people are usually wrong, don’t follow them. Just pay attention more, and you’ll be developing intuition about your intuition. Give Your Intuition Good Information Your skill, knowledge and experience determine the potential effectiveness of your intuition. No weak chess player will never intuitively beat that computer, like Kasparov can. Learn enough about a subject, before expecting good hunches about it - or before trusting the hunches. Work in the area you want more intuition in. When enough information is in your mind, it will go to work for you with or without your conscious participation, so feed it well. Recognize your intuition and you’ll have hunches and ideas more often. Study it and you’ll learn when to trust it. Give it good information and you’ll be repaid with good hunches and ideas. When preparing to visit the Caribbean it can be a bit overwhelming, there are so many islands, and so many ports. How do you make sure you make the most of your time at each destination? Whether it is adventure, lush landscapes, history or a trip to the tropical shores you are after, you will not be disappointed when you dock into your port of call. Ocho Rios, which is located on the northern coast of Jamaica, has become an incredibly popular destination for cruise ship passengers. Once a small fishing and banana port, the cruise ship capital of Jamaica is frequented daily by visitors looking to explore the island, soak up some Jamaican style relaxation and enjoy the port which has now transformed into a world class holiday destination. There is so much to see when you visit Ocho Rios, if you decide to take part in a shore excursion, or a pre-planned tour, you will find an array of places to visit. There are currently over fifty shore excursions on offer by Royal Caribbean, an example of these are The Chukka Jamaican Dogsled encounter, Deep Sea Fishing or rafting on The Martha Brae. Carnival Cruises offer a huge variety of trips including The Bob Marley Bus Adventure and The 18th century Estate and Ultimate Beach Experience. The cruise lines offer an amazing selection of shore excursions, and you will find your perfect one onboard. If you prefer to see Ocho Rios on your own, the most popular way of getting around the island is by taxi. There are licensed taxis at the port, they are unmetered, and it is always recommended to arrange all fares before leaving. You should however always make sure the taxi is officiated by JUTA (Jamaican Union of Taxi Associations). The nearby town is accessible by walking, and some cruise lines offer shuttle buses to some of the more popular attractions. If you have already arranged a shore excursion, there will be sufficient travel arrangements made in order to get you to your destination. If it is adventure you are looking for in Ocho Rios, the most popular tourist attraction is Dunns River Falls. Located to the west of Ocho Rios, a 15 minute drive away, you will find the 600 foot cascading waterfalls. In a chain like manner, you can work you way up taking in the breathtaking sights around you. Whether you take a shore excursion or get a taxi from the port, you will find tour guides ready to show you the way, as you climb the falls, and watch the water flow into the pools below you. There is a small fee to go to Dunns River Falls Park; this is currently $15 for adults and $12 for children. After climbing the falls, you can relax on the beach, explore the tropical foliage and spend time in the picnic areas. For a true once in a lifetime experience, Dolphin Cove can be found next to Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios. You can swim with a family of Bottle Nose dolphins. The cove itself is surrounded by four acres of tropical rain forest. Alongside the dolphins the cove is also home to other marine species such as rays, eels and sharks as well as tropical birds, like the macaw. If the beach is more your idea of fun, within walking distance of the port you will find Turtle Beach, a busy seaside with lots of people and water sports. The beach has bars, restaurants and shops nearby and you will find plenty to keep yourself busy. If you prefer a more relaxing time at the beach then visit the small and peaceful resort of Laughing Waters. Mallard Beach, located in the centre of Ocho Rios, is a great family beach, and one that is often chosen to avoid the crowds. Mahogany Beach is a smaller and more intimate alternative to Turtle Beach, situated on Main Street, there is a bar and restaurant on the beach and a roped off area in the sea, which you can swim and where boats can not enter. You may find you are charged a small fee to enter some beaches; this is not a charge for using the beach, but to keep hustlers away, and let you relax without having to worry about those around you. One of the most popular things to do in Ocho Rios is to visit the shopping plazas, the Main port itself is within easy walking distance to the nearby craft market and shopping centres. The Taj Mahal Shopping Centre which is located directly opposite the port along, with Sonis is the place to find the luxury items and great duty free goods. If it is more traditional Jamaican goods you are interested in The Island Village Shopping Centre can be found within 10 minutes walk from the port, it has lots to offer, and you will find great name brand stuff, jewellery, hand made cigars, and the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee which is a must to try whilst in Ocho Rios. There are many more attractions in Ocho Rios that you may choose to visit and explore; if you are interested in Jamaica’s historical sights then look no further than Prospect Plantation, a working plantation which grows a variety of different foods such as sugar cane, banana, cassava, avocado, and pimento. There are spectacular views over the White River, amazing grounds, a bar, miniature golf and horseback riding available. Once you have finished exploring the island, you can indulge in some traditional Jamaican food, there are loads of places to eat and one thing you can guarantee is that jerk chicken will be on the menu. One of the most well known and talked about places to eat is Dave’s Lobster Shack. Dave will cook what is caught that day meaning everything is very fresh, a true Jamaican experience. Whatever you choose to do in Ochos Rios, you will find plenty to see, whilst experiencing the true Jamaican culture, visiting new and exciting places. One thing is for sure, you will not be bored!

Es ist ziemlich möglich, fünf oder mehr Fahrerhäuser in einem Durchlauf zu stoppen nur, damit die Treiber ihre Köpfe und Zoom weg vom Lassen du angeschwemmt und verwirrt rütteln. Eine sehr in der Tat frustrieren Zeit! Die andere Methode des Benennens eines Taxis ist vermutlich das leistungsfähigste und der Stall eins. Einfach indem es die Firma aufruft, kann ein Taxi auf seiner Weise zu dir in einigen Minuten sein und meistens alles funktioniert gut. Die dritte Methode kann extrem ärgerlich und frustrierend auch sein, während eine für ungefähr Zwanzig Minuten in einer langen Warteschlange normalerweise stehen muß während, leiden unter der Hitze des Tages. Aber, indem man einen Taxirank verwendet, wirst du von herauf ausgewählt werden versichert - durch Gesetz kann der Treiber nicht ablehnen, dich zu nehmen, wohin du gehen möchtest, wenn der Aufsammelnpunkt an einem Taxirank ist. Das Leben ist zwar interessanter als versuchend, sich ein Taxi zu verfangen. Das Leben erhält aktiver, wenn man innerhalb und auf der Weise zu ihrem Bestimmungsort ist. Sie erklären dir, daß daß dieser wegen der besonders langen Stunden, die sie bearbeiten müssen (einen Tip von dir erhalten) aber vieler ist, zweifellos weg nicken, während du hinter ihnen sitzt. In einem Taxi war ich Art das Versuchen, meine Zeitung mit meinem Kopf zu lesen, der rückwärts waggling ist und schicke, als die ganze plötzliches ich beachtete nach, daß ich meine Zeitung lesen könnte. Ich bedeute, daß das ganzes plötzliches ich nicht herum geworfen wurde, während der Treiber das Gas und den Bruch in der schnellen Reihenfolge anwendete. Dieses war sonderbar und ungewöhnlich, aber ich nahm es als eine andere Verschrobenheit der Industrie an. Es war, als wir wo entlang zooming an der Weise hinter der Höchstgeschwindigkeit, die ich nahe meinem Treiber betrachteten. Er schlief und stichhaltig so und wir, wo, gerade vorangehend für den kommenden Weg. Anderer ist hoffnungslose Jagt der Treiber' für die Plastikflaschen, die er unter seinem Sitz beiseite geschaffen hat. Ich würde die Hersteller dieser Drogen als jedoch viel Nehmen eines Treibers fragen, das sie nie scheinen, ihm beim Halten zu helfen wach. OH- und die wichtigste für heraus aufzupassen Sache, ist, wenn dein Kopf nicht mehr hin und her stößt - dieser bedeutet, daß der Treiber gefallenes schlafendes hat und sein Fuß ruhig ist. Ich hasse normalerweise kleines Gespräch bilden. Ich würde eher eine Zeitung oder einen Stare aus dem Fenster heraus lesen. Aber in den Singapur Taxis ziehe ich es vor, den Treiber im Gespräch als dieses ohne Zweifel zu halten und unfehlbar werde ihn breit-aufwache halten. Das Gespräch gerechte Sagen anlaufen etwas dumm wie, „heißer Tag heute“, als ob Singapur zu einem Tag zum folgenden irgendwie unterschiedlich ist. Zum Fragen er unveränderlich dreht das Gespräch herum, wo du bist von und dann sprechender Fußball und Liverpool oder er an den Zustand der Wirtschaft wenden. „Kein Profit im Taxi, das mehr, keine Kunden und Autos fährt, kostete mehr, um als überhaupt vor zu kaufen“. Dieses sollte ihn halten, für eine halbe Stunde zu gehen oder so, mehr als genug für die Reise. Ich denke, daß diese Drogen alternative Nebenwirkungen haben können. Ich habe bei einigen Gelegenheiten beachtet, daß Treiber eine Spitze Höhe spirited sind. Jetzt, ob dieses ein Effekt der Drogen, der in ein Paar von Stunden später tritt oder ein passend zu etwas, das vollständig entfernt ich ist, wissen nicht. Ich bin gerechtes Versuchen, eine Beziehung wie herzustellen, wenn das Treibernehmen ihre „wachen Pillen des Unterhaltes“ nichts geschieht. Nr., war es nicht Musik oder etwas ähnliches aber der Treiber, während in seinen Sitz auf und ab springen, nachgeahmt den Bagpipes und dem durchschnittlichen Atem ein Pferd wurde. Er pflegte, „Schottland“ häufig zu sagen als ob, um mir zu versicheren, daß er wußte, wohin ich von kam. Sonderbar! Ich hatte ein anderes schlechtes Auftreten in einem Taxi, als er begann, gegen eine Fußballmannschaft konkurrenzfähig zu erhalten und er mehr Zeit verbrachte, die versucht, über die Rückseite seines Sitzes zu klettern, zum seiner Meinung als schauend zu verstärken, wo er ging. Ich erhielt extrem gesorgt um ihn und entschieden, daß ich sein Taxi schnellstmöglich lassen sollte. Ich sprang an einem Durchschnitt heraus und entschied, daß ich nicht für solch eine Fahrt zahlen würde. Ich könnte ihn hören zu schreien, während ich wegabstieg die harte Schulter laufen ließ - aber ich möchte nicht zahlen bedrängt zu werden! Abgesehen von allem über typischem Taxi überschreitet die Reise ohne Anmerkung. Einige der Treiber stören dich ernsthaft oder bilden dich fühlen Kranken, wenn sie ihre Tür öffnen und ein grosses gob des Schleims auf die Straße Seite spucken. Aber dieses ist die Weise, der sie sie tun. Ich habe einen Treiber gebeten nicht zu tun daß wieder - und er nicht. Aber im Allgemeinen gerechter Versuch und ignorieren den. Sie auch neigen, einer Spitze vocal Innere des Autos zu erhalten, wenn sie in einen nahen Verlust in ein anderes Auto mit einbezogen werden oder müssen für jede mögliche Zeitspanne oben sitzen wegen eines Unfalles voran. Dieses liegt an der Tatsache daß, wenn ein Treiber sein Auto und eine Shouts an einem anderen Treiber dann er Dose schnell verläßt und ohne Frage wird geschleppt weg zum Gefängnis. Die Regierung läßt nicht die Treiber zu, die eine Szene in der öffentlichkeit bilden und also tun die gerechten Treiber sie nicht, überhaupt. Dieses ist all-und-gut, es sei denn du geschiehst, der arme Passagier zu sein, der das Hauptgewicht seiner „Straße Raserei“ nehmen muß, während vortäuschend, daß du nicht im rückseitigen Sitz dieses bestimmten Fahrerhauses sitzt. Traurig, scheine ich, sie unten zu setzen. Das Taxisystem und die Treiber sind ziemlich ausgezeichnet und Safe in Singapur und kein kleiner als jede mögliche andere Stadt oder Stadt die Welt rüber. Wenn man ein Taxi in Singapur anstellt, wirst du von einem schnellem sichergestellt und freie Reise nach deinem Bestimmungsort und den Kosten ist nicht kostspielig, bist du sicher und ständig gekümmert. Eine Sache verwirrt mich zwar, das von, warum die Treiber die Passagiere, welche fragen ständig Weise sie möchten, daß geht. Gerade, ankommend in Singapur, hebe ich ein Taxi am Rank auf, der außerhalb des Flughafens gerecht ist. Ich gebe ihm den Namen des Hotels und weg stellt er ein. Nach Fünfminuten dreht sich dieser Treiber unveränderlich herum und fragt mich, ob ich durch die TORTE oder durch die Ostküste-Straße gehen möchte. Dumme Frage wirklich als die durchschnittliche Person, die im Singapur Flughafen und einem besonders ankommt, wer zu einem Hotel geht, würde nicht einen Anhaltspunkt über das Transportsystem in Singapur haben. Ich pflegte, zu denken daß die Treiber, wo, ihre Passagiere hinsichtlich ihres Wissens von Singapur prüfend und daß, wenn sie Unwissenheit dann zeigten, sie weg auf einer Tour der Stadt gekarrt würden, ohne irgendeinen Unterschied zu kennen. Aber dieses ist nicht der Fall gewesen, wie ich ihn häufig zum Test gesetzt habe. Der Treiber hat mich gefragt daß und ich ihm keine Andeutung hinsichtlich meines Wissens der Stadt gegeben habe - und er hat mir den schnellsten Weg genommen! So ist Leben! Hören jeder: die Taxi-Treiber in Singapur sind von der ausgezeichneten Qualität und jeder zukünftige Passagier wird von einem einfachen, von einem Safe versichert und glatt-fährt zu ihrem Bestimmungsort - nicht auf mich hören. Gerechter Unterhalt, den deine Augen und die Treiber sich außerdem öffnen, wenn du kannst!

Gotcha!And how about the “fixed” rate? Read the fine print, it will actually say “subject to change without notice”. Is it just me or do I misunderstand the meaning of the word “fixed”?Also your “fixed” rate may be raised to the “maximum allowable by state law” if you go over your credit limit (including fees that may put you over your limit before you even know it), make a late payment, miss a payment or do not pay the full amount. Gotcha!And then there is that low “teaser rate”. Yes that’s what it is called in the industry and it is appropriately descriptive. That rate is given out, they aren’t lying about that. But it is only given to the people who have 700 or above credit scores, minimal debt, and a high paying job.The majority of the people who are sent the ad will not get the lowest rate. But you won’t know your rate until you apply for the card. But by the time they tell you what rate you will be at they have already signed you up and issued your card.They count on the fact that most people will just accept the rate and go from there. Gotcha!So how can you avoid these traps? Rule #1, read ALL of the fine print. If you are not clear on something ask someone else what they think it means. Ask an attorney friend, CPA (certified public accountant), financial planner, banker or other person in the financial industry. Chances are they will have several questions about the fine print, too.Rule #2, don’t apply for a card unless or until they tell you what your actual rate will be. This is hard because most of them are not set up to tell you. Generally you will need to know your credit scores and have a copy of your credit report handy.Even then you are unlikely to find someone through their telephone maze that will or can actually answer your question. Try to find a card that gives you a confirmed rate before you apply. A conscientious company will first request a copy of your credit report from one of the credit bureaus before quoting you a rate.Look on http://www.bankrate.com for current rates offered by various credit card companies and banks. Often smaller banks and companies offer better deals and are not as strict or hard to deal with. Check with your local banks also. The following creative marketing ideas are specifically about finding new places and ways to advertise. This has always been an area ripe for new ideas. What prompted me to write this page is an article I recently read on a company called Show Media. Show Media has advertising displays on top of 3,000 taxis in New York. They charge client (which include Levis, Nike and other big companies) $200 per month for each ad, and they pay $100 to the cab company. That leaves enough room for healthy profits. Founder Laurence Hallier says that a typical campaign, which would cost $40,000 per month for exposure on 200 taxis, is seen by 25% of the city’s residents - each day. That got me to thinking about what other creative marketing ideas and opportunities are out there in the area of advertising. The following is a short list I am coming up with as I write this. Some of these may already exist. Street Signs - In these tough times, many cities are looking for additional revenue. Could placing advertising on street signs provide it? In addition to providing monthly revenue, the company that arranges this might have to make new signs for the city, saving it this cost. Personal Car Ads - I know this is being done in some areas already. What is needed is a simple system. Have a place where a driver can pull in, have a sign attached to his or her car, and get a check for keeping it there for six months. Kite Ads - In areas with consistent breezes it might be possible to have kites flying most of the day with large ads on them. Beaches are a natural location, but this may work in other places as well. Sidewalk Audio Advertising - As people walk by certain locations an ad automatically plays. Advertisers could be charged by the number of times an ad plays (getting a good deal when more than one pedestrian happens to be there to hear it). Another angle here is to sell the units to specific businesses. A restaurant might have a recording that is triggered by each passer-by, saying something like, “Hello, come on in right now and you’ll get a free drink with your sandwich.” Yard Sign Advertising - I’m not sure about the legality of this in most places, but many yards have signs supporting political candidates or announcing that some company just replaced the windows or did the landscaping, so why not have paid advertising? Residents get a monthly check for each sign, and advertisers pay twice that, leaving room for a profit for the company that does this. Mural Advertising - This one might be an opportunity for a budding artist. He could find a building that is ugly and ask the owner how much he would want to have a nice advertising mural on it. Then he could find advertisers who will pay enough to leave him with a decent profit. The owner of the building might have to get final approval on the planned mural and agree to leave it there for a couple years. Odor Advertising - Have the smell of fresh cooked food pumped onto busy sidewalks, alongside a sign or audio ad promoting a restaurant. Advertising With Plants - Bushes could be trimmed into the shape of a company logo. Flower beds could be planted with logos or even in the shape of words for advertising. Cornfields near airports could have ads cut into them to be seen by plane passengers above. Marketing Games - A company might get word-of-mouth advertising by making it into a contest or game. Participants sign up online and get a number which they give out with their recommendation. The person who has referred the most customers after a year wins a big prize. DVD Ads - There is already advertising for other movies IN DVD movies, but what about on the box that the DVD comes in. I’m not referring to the one that it is sold in. Many movie rental stores have their own blank boxes that they send out all of their movies in. Could they sell advertising on those? It could be for local products or services (a restaurant, for example), or products available nationally. Those are the ten creative marketing ideas that I could think of in the forty-five minutes it took to write this. You can probably add a few to the list with a bit of brainstorming.

It is vital to read the small print of any quotation you receive as restrictions, terms and conditions will be applied to different aspects of the policy. If you are in any doubt as to the fine details it would be wise to phone to discuss these before committing to the policy. Other aspects such as the age and condition of the vehicle, the age and taxi driving experience of the drivers, any previous driving convictions and no claims discounts will all be taken into consideration before the insurance companies can provide you with a quote. It is well worth spending time shopping around to find the best deals, however you should also bear in mind that cheap does not necessarily mean the best or most appropriate. You should make it known to the different insurance companies that you are looking for the best deals as many will either match or offer to beat any like-for-like quote you receive from any one of their competitors. If you are confused by the whole issue of finding the right taxi insurance to meet your needs, it may be wise to use an insurance broker who specialises in taxi insurance to find the most competitive deals available to meet you business needs.

“There are no shopping reviews for Bratislava yet,” said the travel website. “Why don’t you write the first one?” It was an invitation that was impossible to refuse - especially a week before Christmas. Bratislava is not New York, of course - no Macy’s, no Bloomingdale’s, no Saks Fifth Avenue. But the Slovakian Tourist Board hymned “the explosive development of the city and the opening of five major shopping centres within the past few years”: Polus City Centre, Shopping Park Bratislava, Shopping Park Soravia, the Aupark Shopping Mall and Avion Shopping Park, close to the airport. Breakfast at Shopping Park Bratislava … the pulse was quickening. Two hours from Stansted; ?150 with friendly Sky Europe; a plane full of Slovakian students on the way home rather than loud couples from Coventry maxing out on the credit card; and, if we could discover what the Slovakian currency was, almost certainly an excellent exchange rate. Who needs New York - thanks to the plummeting dollar currently crammed with British shopaholics, and hardly a plane ticket or hotel room to be had? “The only thing I know about Slovakia is what I learned first-hand from your foreign minister, who came to Texas,” George Bush told a proud Slovakian journalist - shortly after meeting the prime minister of Slovenia. Banana republic? Christmas shopping for me normally means 45 minutes in Marks & Spencer on the Saturday before the Big Day. Vouchers for my parents; Belgian chocolates for my wife; a history-of-football video for my father-in-law; scarf, umbrella and handkerchiefs for my dad (all now banned under new parental regulations); Bing Crosby video, soaps and a cat calendar for my mother; a scale-model Mercedes for my son; an ornamental golf ball cleaner for my brother … and home in time for the 1.40 at Ascot. Christmas over for another year. It’s the thought that counts and each Christmas, as I rush round this shopping-made-simple corner of M&S surrounded by other avatars of indolence, I can honestly say there hasn’t been a moment of thought. But this year it’s different - this year Bratislava, famed for its crystal and porcelain, its ultra-alcoholic drinks and its hand-made wooden toys, will make those presents worth opening. Surely a gift from the Baby Jesus Workshop in the Main Square of the Old Town will excite my two goddaughters more than their annual Smiths tokens. It’s just a shame I missed the ox-roasting that marks the official start of the festive season. Now, it has to be said straight away that Bratislava’s skyline - tower blocks and Lego houses marooned on the plain of the Danube - cannot compete with New York’s. Bratislava has yet to find its Chrysler Building. Indeed, the deputy features editor’s long-ago sighting of the city from the soulless ring road seems to have prompted his choice of Bratislava as my shopping Mecca. But that was then - eastern bloc drabness, Stalinist uniformity; now, Bratislava is as vibrant as the next town, though, admittedly, the next town is Nitra, where the Rough Guide highlights the Tesco hypermarket. New York is cold and has a foot of snow. Small dogs are buried up to their necks on the sidewalk. Bratislava is warm and sunny; the Danube looks a gorgeous shade of grey. We eventually work out that the currency is crowns, and get 40 to the euro at the airport’s one foreign exchange desk. Slovakia is presumably applying to join Euroland, and it can’t come soon enough: working in three currencies defeats me completely. There is none of New York’s notorious bustle at Bratislava’s small airport. In fact, there doesn’t appear to be anyone here at all. We wait no more than half an hour for our luggage and spend another 20 minutes waiting for a taxi. For 472 crowns (or about ?12, or some unknown amount in pounds), we are whisked into town, past a large Ikea - truly, Bratislava has joined the 21st century. “We are here to shop,” we tell the hotel receptionist, who hides his bemusement and suggests we try the Aupark Shopping Mall on the other side of the Danube - a short ride that costs us a surprising 282 crowns because the taxi gets stuck behind a stationary truck and an argument ensues. Aupark is delightfully Slovakian. A tape of White Christmas is playing at the glittering entrance - in Slovak - followed by a version of Mistletoe and Wine. I buy myself a Father Christmas hat with flashing red lights and blend into the festive scene. It’s a medium-sized mall but pleasingly done, with a rickety translucent staircase and a water feature with no walls - ideal for accidentally tipping buggies into. There is a McDonald’s, of course, a Benetton, a Lagerfeld shop in which, discouragingly, the goods are not priced, and a Gant store in which, discouragingly, they are - a woolly hat for ?25, a leather bag for ?300. Or perhaps I’m miscalculating the rate. Anyway, the scale-model vintage Mercedes seem very cheap - so I buy two for my son. Despite the Slovakian covers of great Christmas hits, this could be Mallsville, Anywhere, so we head for the heart of the old town instead - along gleaming, litter-free streets filled with beautiful twentysomethings with impossibly high cheekbones. It’s lunchtime in the main square, and young and old, shoppers and executives, are standing at high tables eating sausages and kebabs. I point at a cutlet and ask the vendor what it is. He doesn’t speak English, but, from the clucking noises and flapping motions that follow, I assume it’s chicken. It comes in a roll with a sickly, glutinous sauce - 65 crowns, though he tries to keep the 100 I give him. Time to do some serious shopping. There are dozens of stalls selling handicrafts, and I am drawn to one selling hand-carved figurines. These are priced at 1,300 crowns, and I assume I can haggle with the stallholder. But haggling with a man who is wearing a fox pelt and carrying an antique pistol is disconcerting, so I end up paying the full whack for a large, mournful-looking pilgrim. A lovely surprise for my father. I buy a pair of hand-made leather slippers for my wife for 780 crowns. I have lost track of the exchange rate, but reckon that, if a mournful-looking pilgrim is worth 1,300 crowns, a pair of leather slippers for 780 is a snip. The man on the stall spends a long time showing me how the leather straps of the slippers must be tied up the leg. His instructions are wholly incomprehensible. At least it will give us something to do on Christmas day. I had intended to buy some of the famously strong spirits - the concierge recommended Slivovica, Demanovka and Vorovicka - but I can’t find them, so make do with honey wine, in a fetching horse-shaped bottle. The stallholder lets me taste the sweet and bitter versions, which he has warming on pans. I opt for the sweet, and leave him chatting to two nuns who seem to be regular customers. Honey wine may be habit-forming. My father-in-law will love this, though I’m also hoping to buy him a history of Slovakian football. I buy a pot of local honey for my mother-in-law, snowman-shaped biscuits covered in icing and a wooden elephant, whose trunk immediately falls off, for my young nephew, delicate corn dollies for my two god-daughters, and an unpleasant-looking chocolate sausage for the deputy features editor. I can’t find anything for my brother - don’t they play golf in Bratislava? - so he may have to have a history of Slovakian football, too. My mother deserves something special, so I head for a shop specialising in glassware. There is a large display of crystal vases and bowls, each of which I pick up to appreciate the weight and exquisite workmanship, before realising from the agitated looks of the staff that the prominent sign on the display says: “Do not touch.” I settle on a bowl for 2,000 crowns (or one and a half pilgrims) and hope my fellow customers - all elderly women in fur coats - admire my good taste. I try not to calculate the likelihood of my getting the crystal bowl back to the UK in one piece. I would like to carry on buying - though the lack of decent-sized plastic bags is proving a problem, and the batteries in my hat are running low. But I have to settle down to write the first Bratislavan shopping review, a task which is complicated by the fact that my hotel room overlooks an open-air skating rink, which appears to think loud rap music is the perfect accompaniment to skating. At least they’re not playing Mistletoe and Wine. As I survey the lovely objects on the table before me, and listen to the frenzied screams of children colliding in the darkness on the ice, one thing is clear: New York’s days as the world’s shopping capital are numbered and Bratislava is ready to take over. All it will take is a sharp fall in the value of the pilgrim.

Opportunistic travelers get to travel more, see more and do more. Of course, you can ignore this advice if you have unlimited funds. I went to Ecuador because it was cheap. Honestly, aren't there many interesting places in this world? Why not choose one you can travel to inexpensively? The other places will be there in the future, and you may have an opportunity to go to those places cheaply at some point. Cheap Countries Ecuador is my favorite international destination. You can still get a decent meal for two dollars. U.S. dollars, by the way, since that's conveniently the official currency of Ecuador now. From the beautiful snow-capped Andes Mountains, to the Galapagos Islands, you'll never run out of places to explore in Ecuador. Travel there is safe and inexpensive. South America in general is inexpensive, and the most affordable countries are, in my opinion, the most beautiful. These are the countries along the Andes mountains; Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Argentina, thanks to its recent economic troubles, is once again a cheap place for travelers as well. In Central America, it costs very little to travel and vacation in both Nicaragua and Guatemala. Nicaragua, in particular, has become more stable and safe for travelers in recent years. Costa Rica is a wonderful too, and though it is one of more expensive counties of Central America, that probably still leaves it cheaper than Europe. In Asia, India is still low-cost, especially if you stay in the numerous hostels and boarding houses. Thailand and Indonesia are also very cheap. With all international destinations, the plane tickets will be your single biggest travel expense. This is especially true with the Asian countries. Being there is cheap, but getting there may not be. Cheap International Travel Tips Wherever you go; there are things you can do to keep it cheap. Eat where locals eat, for example, instead of at the tourist restaurants. To keep it really cheap, eat fruit from street markets (wash it well) and packaged snacks from grocery stores. Visit the free and cheap attractions first. It's possible you'll have so much fun that you'll never get around to doing the expensive things. A higher price means better quality with travel bags, but not with travel experiences. Busses are cheaper than taxis in any country, but be careful of crowded city busses, where pickpockets hang out. Walking is even cheaper, and it's a great way to learn about a city. Just ask the locals where the dangerous parts are before you wander too far. For cheap accommodations find out where local visitors from within the country stay. Negotiating room charges is common in some areas. In Banos, Ecuador, we negotiated our room rate down from $12 to $6 per night, by paying for several nights in advance. Consider hostels, if you don't mind sharing a room. They're much more common overseas. Cheap international travel is often only as cheap as your plane tickets. Use the techniques outlined on our site to save big on tickets, or search the fares to several interesting countries. If one is $500 less than the others, consider going there. $500 can buy a few extra days, or an extra mini-vacation some other time.

The roads in Cambodia are vicious, angry slabs of asphalt filled with potholes that would qualify as valleys in some countries. Fortunately, I had it made traveling from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh. Or so I thought. Cambodian Taxis Having spent two weeks in the relaxing beach town of Sihanoukville, I was getting bored and so were the three chaps traveling with me. It was time to head to the supposed chaos of Phnom Penh and eventually Angkor Wat. Despite the legendary reputation of Cambodian roads, the owner of our accommodations told us the road to Phnom Penh was smooth as glass. For twenty U.S. dollars, a local taxi would get all four of us to the city without incident. Around noon, two Australians, an Englishman and myself crammed into a Toyota Camry with our backpacks and miscellaneous junk. Our driver was a good guy, smiling constantly. We did have a communication problem since he spoke about two words of English and we only spoke English. The road, however, was as smooth as promised and we congratulated ourselves on our stroke of luck. For about an hour, we cruised through the placid Cambodian countryside. It was difficult to imagine the chaos that must have occurred when the Khmer Rouge was in power. There really wasn’t much to see beyond the occasional village. About half way through the trip, the lack of any sizeable towns became a concern. In the proverbial middle of nowhere, our driver pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the car. Since we couldn’t verbally communicate, much finger pointing was undertaken. Were we lost? Did he want more money? Was he going on strike? What the heck was going on? Eventually, we foreign idiots were able to decipher that the car was overheating. Lest you think us complete idiots, I must mention that the temperature gauge wasn’t working. Regardless, our driver popped the hood and our smooth trip came to a cracked end. Steam poured from a half-inch crack next to the radiator crap. Road site assistance seemed an iffy prospect in the middle of Cambodia. I mean, you couldn’t really call your car insurance company. Me: “Hi. My car is broken.” Operator: “Okay, we will send someone out. Where are you?” Me: “Um, somewhere in the middle of Cambodia.” Operator: “?[hysterical laughter]? Click.” The driver looked at us. We looked at him. Simultaneously, we all started laughing. What else could you do? We were in the middle of nowhere, the radiator was shot and it was 60 miles or so to Phnom Penh. Looking back, I can tell you that Cambodian taxi drivers are a committed and creative group. We sat on the side of the road, contemplating the fact that we were about to have a much more authentic Cambodian experience then any of us had planned. Mysteriously, our driver had gone off into the brush on the side of the road. After a few minutes, he returned with a dark green leaf and a big smile. Putting MacGyver to shame, he proceeded to patch the crack in the radiator using only the leaf and tube of superglue. We all moved back as he applied the superglue to the boiling hot radiator, but nothing went up in flames. After allowing for a suitable amount of time for drying/praying, all we needed was water. Although admittedly not a car expert, I do know pouring cold water into the radiator of an overheating engine is a bad idea. MacGyver, err? our driver, didn’t bat an eye despite our extensive arm waving. With a big smile, the water went into the radiator as we watched in horror. The only question was what would happen first, the leaf patch bursting or the engine seizing up? Well, you can guess how it turned out. Not only did we make it to Phnom Penh, we later learned the radiator had two other leaf patches on the bottom. The road had been smooth, but my nerves were still shot. One way or another, the roads of Cambodia will get you. At least I have ample ammunition to mock MacGyver fans.

“There’ll be trouble,” spat the man behind the wheel as we hurtled through the pre-lunch traffic earlier this week, pedestrians hopping hastily aside and other motorists left gesturing Gallically in our wake. “Whore of my testicles, there’ll be trouble. Eighteen years I’ve been in this job and I’ve never seen the boys so angry.” As opening conversational gambits go this was unusually cheery, coming from a Paris taxi driver. But something was clearly up. What it was, the driver told me when he wasn’t accusing the man in front of having been born in a brothel, was that the town hall had decided, on the advice of the chief of police, to increase the number of licensed taxi cabs plying the streets of the French capital. “Another 1,500 licences over the next five years,” he said. “When half of us are already on the equivalent of the minimum wage. It’s theft, pure and simple. We won’t sit by and let it happen.” Under the circumstances (an urgent summons to the foreign ministry), it didn’t seem politic to disagree. But inwardly I blessed the good councillors: grabbing a cab in Paris is an exercise that requires, on a good day, time, patience and luck. On a bad day, forget it. Intrigued by the driver’s news, I asked at the town hall. Back in the Belle Epoque days of 1920, it seems, Paris had 25,000 taxis. But that clearly was altogether too pleasant for the people who used them, so a bylaw was passed in 1937 cutting their number to a more reasonable 14,000. Since then it has been increased just twice, in 1967 and 1991, to a grand total of 14,900. This means, if my maths are not mistaken, that while the population of greater Paris has grown from 4m to nearly 10m, and incomes have risen such that many more people are inclined to take a taxi, a major European capital now has less than 60% of the taxis that it had 78 years ago. (London has more than four times as many taxis as Paris.) The consequences of this are not immediately appreciable to the casual observer. Between, say, 9am and midday and 3pm and 7pm, finding a taxi in Paris is no problem: there are hundreds of them cruising the streets or waiting patiently at one of their 487 ranks, smoking a Gauloise (the driver, that is). But when most normal people might actually want a cab, which is to say to go to lunch or dinner, out for the evening, or home after midnight, they vanish. This is because the Paris taxi driver’s dejeuner is as sacrosanct as his diner, and at night, naturellement, he sleeps. Paris cabbies, enthusiastic mounters of strikes, go-slows and blockades whenever anyone threatens the status quo, say the council’s daring decision will slash their incomes by 20%, and ruin the market in taxi licences to boot. These currently change hands for just under ?75,000, and represent a handy retirement bonus for most drivers. But what will really inflame passions is not so much the new licence-holders as the one condition that the town hall plans to place on them: the obligation to work from noon to 3pm, 7pm to 9pm, and after midnight. “There’ll be trouble,” spat the cabbie who arrived to take the babysitter home the other night (after a 20-minute wait on the phone to book him). “On the head of my mother, it’s an outrage. When are we supposed to eat?”

Customer service is paramount these days, and a good business apartment rental company will be aware of this. The decision making is then up to you. Whether you are visiting for business, to work on a project, to attend a congress, to give a course, to take a course, or maybe you start living there and building up the next step in your life, and you require temporary housing, you need to concentrate on a company which focuses on professionals. With all these issues in mind, there are a few things you should ask for: Are there basics such as a sofa, bed, TV and bathroom facilities? How far is the apartment from the centre of town or the place of your business meetings and/or conferences? Not exactly like your own house, of course, but pretty close - a nicely decorated place, cosy, pleasant, where you can keep your clothes, books, music, sit down in the sofa and watch a good movie or check your emails on your laptop on the terrace, prepare the meeting for the next day while you cook your own meal. You want to be able to invite people over for dinner or to stay for the weekend. You need a place to stay where you can feel relaxed and do as you wish. Of course, the final decision making is up to you. But you can make this process far easier by simply doing some investigation first.

Thailand was my first tourist destination outside Europe and North America. Based on the sage advice of my Thailand-experienced friends, I was sure that this paradise vacation would be carried out on ridiculous costs. However, back home, I have found out too late, that during my little Thailand adventure I have spent almost the same amount of money as one of my regular surges to Europe. If only I knew that carefully planning your trip to Thailand can manifest itself in huge savings. The following list includes some solid advice that can help those novice Thailand visitors to save significant amounts of cash and still enjoy their vacation: 1. Season choice. Traveling in Thailand Islands during the low season can save you up to 25% of the accommodation costs (up to 25$ per bungalow per night if you choose high standard ? not luxury - accommodation). Similar to many other world locations that are based operate seasonally; there is a significant price fluctuation across seasons. Not less important is that fact that the weather in Thailand is quite pleasant even during the low season. The temperatures’ difference between the “hot season” and the “peak season” is miniscule, and during the “wet season” one can experience only a mild occasional rain. Therefore, in Thailand one can lower accommodation costs by avoiding the peak season without paying the price of suffering from unbearable cold or coping with endless monsoon. 2. Transportation. Getting from Bangkok to your final destination in one of the Southern Islands by train or bus instead of by plane can save you up to 80$ each way. You can save a bundle if you arrive to Bangkok International Airport in the evening. In this case you save, besides the gap between relatively expensive airfare and train or bus ticket, the first night’s accommodation cost as well (40$ - 100$ per bungalow per night in high standard ? not luxury - accommodation). 3. Food. In Western style countries, the more you pay for your dinner the better it is, so everyone can make a personal decision about getting an appropriate cost ? benefit balance. In Thailand, and especially in the Southern Islands it is much simpler: in most cases, the cheaper the better. Expensive restaurants in Thailand Islands usually specialize on Western food that is neither authentic nor of superior taste; a standard dinner will cost you 10$ - 30$ in a restaurant of this kind. Alternatively, the dinner in a cheap restaurant with plastic chairs will cost you 3$ - 8$ and it is usually both tasty and authentic. My most disappointing Thai dinner was served in a fancy restaurant in Bangkok and had cost 120$ for a couple, whereas my best dinner was served in a cheap family restaurant in Koh Phangan. The owner - young mom named Mam ? prepared the meal for us exactly as we wished it would be and charged us with measly 5-6$ per person. 4. Air Conditioning. The presence of air conditioning in your room can make a huge difference in accommodation rates. For example, the same room rates in the same resort can vary from 15$-30$ for a bungalow with a fan to 40$ - 100$ for an air-conditioned bungalow. Although choosing an air-conditioned room during the hot season (such as March ? April) is crucial, if you visit Southern Thailand during the rainy season ? a bungalow with a fan can both satisfy your needs and cut your expenses in more than a half. 5. Location choice. Similar to the principle held in most places in the world, the accommodation rates in Thailand Islands depend on your location choice. The bungalow in the central beach, close to the airport or seaport full of thriving nightlife will probably be twice as expensive as the same bungalow in a remote quiet beach. However, accessibility is an issue in the Thailand Islands, and the taxi fares and taxi boat fares operate under the same principal as the accommodation rates. So there is a rule you may adopt: if you are looking for social activities and busy nightlife? stay close to the airport or seaport; otherwise make a little effort and move after your arrival to a remote beach. You will save up to 60% on the accommodation rates this way. 6. Communication. It will probably not come as a complete shock, but the use of cellular phone from outside of Thailand could be extremely expensive. To save on communication costs you can either buy a local cellular phone with prepaid SIM card or use the Telephone & Internet centers services. Mind you that the cost of these services may vary. As usual, if you’re calling overseas from your resort’s office ? it will be more expensive than using a call center in the town. The cheapest solution is probably giving your phone number to your friends or relatives overseas since every call center has a phone number that can be used for calling back. 7. Price negotiation. In tourist locations in Thailand negotiation is a necessity or a way of life. Likewise, in the less touristy islands and areas price bargaining is accepted as well. Just try it ? in Thailand price negotiation isn’t considered an embarrassing behavior, so you have nothing to lose. 8. Psychology. Although, in Thailand everything is perceived to be cheaper than in your home country, don’t be fooled by the seemingly low prices and control your expenses. Buying an enormous amount of inexpensive things can really add up to a surprisingly large sum of money. During my last visit to Thailand, I followed these guidelines with persistence and I was happy to disclose, that budget travel in Thailand can be more than just an economical issue, it can also be enjoyable. Interestingly enough, in Thailand, the less you spend ? the closer you get to the local authentic experience.

Many of the thousand or so fans had travelled hundreds of miles and waited more than five hours to see their hero, but few got more than a glimpse of the smile that the midfielder and his wife granted in a brief pose to the army of photographers and TV crews before rushing off to their Mercedes. Proving that Manchester United have lost one of the planet’s greatest salesmen - particularly in this most sought-after of markets - Beckham’s promotion work this week will be one of the mostly highly paid in the history of advertising. According to the Asahi newspaper, he was lured back to Japan for the first time since last year’s World Cup finals with a 1bn yen (?5.5m) two-year deal to sell chocolates and beauty products. By comparison, Beckham’s contract with Real is reported to be worth ?4.2m a year. But while he will have to perform week in, week out on the pitch to earn his euros, almost all of the yen will come from his work this week. Today, David and Victoria will front the Just Beauty campaign by TBC, a chain of beauty salons that offers facials, waxing and diet aids. The Beckhams already appear as the ultimate beautiful couple in a series of TV commercials for the firm, which has previously used Naomi Campbell and Takuya Kimura, Japan’s biggest pop idol. Even when attitudes to commercialism became more positive and the rewards increased along with Japan’s economic growth, the call for western celebrities to act zanier or cheesier to meet the demands of a different audience still made many of them balk at having their Japan-orientated images shown elsewhere. In recent years, lawyers for Arnold Schwarzenegger forced a website focusing on such ads to remove one that showed the actor hamming it up with a fake moustache and a wig to promote a satellite TV company. Even by the standards of these superstars, who could earn $1m (?600,000) for a day’s filming during the height of Japan’s economic power, Beckham is exceptional. In recent years, the number of foreign stars in Japanese commercials has plummeted along with advertising revenues, but the footballer will break records this week despite the falling market. But, with few British fans able to speak German, Mr Dörendahl is determined to master the basics. “We want to show Fifa that Berlin taxi drivers are trying to do their bit,” he said. “I want to be able to say more than ‘A little bit’ when people ask me if I can speak English. It’s a very difficult language, though.” As well as useful phrases such as turn right and straight ahead, the taxi drivers studying at Berlin’s language academy are also learning handy football terms such as offside, referee and, of course, penalty shootout. They also learn how to give an opinion on which side will win. “It won’t be England,” Mr Dörendahl said. “Germany will get to the final again, but they will lose against Argentina.” The English for Taxi Drivers course started in January. After 100 hours of study, Mr Dörendahl and his fellow graduates will get an “English spoken” sticker which they can put in their yellow Mercedes cabs, possibly with a World Cup logo on it. So far only a small fraction of Berlin’s 14,000 taxi drivers has enrolled for English lessons, which cost just €2.95 (£2) an hour. “Some of those who grew up in West Germany have good English already,” Mr Dörendahl said. “Others can’t be bothered. They say, ‘I haven’t needed English for 30 years. I don’t need it now’.” The lessons, in a classroom near Berlin’s Tempelhof airport, are just a small part of Germany’s impressive preparations for the World Cup. The Olympic stadium, where the Nazi regime staged the 1936 Olympics, has been renovated at a cost of €250m. A spectacular new main railway station is being built next to the office of Germany’s chancellor, Gerhard Schröder. Once the tournament starts, tourist officials in Berlin are planning to convert the leafy heart of the city - between the Brandenburg Gate and the Siegesäule, the golden victory pillar - into a vast sports avenue. Fans who don’t have tickets will be able to watch the games on a giant screen. Next Tuesday the British embassy in Berlin is hosting a World Cup seminar, which brings together regional representatives from the English Football Association and the Home Office with their German counterparts. British officials estimate that more than 100,000 England fans are likely to come to Germany for the tournament, assuming, as seems likely, that England qualifies. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have little chance of qualification. Mr Dörendahl’s English teacher, Juliane Bannert, said most of her students were beginners. After five months, what was Mr Dörendahl’s English like? “It’s not bad. He has a very strong German accent. His pronunciation isn’t very good. But he is willing to learn,” she said judiciously Very few of the mainly middle-aged taxi drivers taking her course had visited Britain, she said. Mrs Bannert tries to teach them the rudiments of British culture. “I tell them that all the Brits go to Prague and get drunk there,” she said. “I also tell them that London is really expensive and that if they have a chance to go to Scotland they should go there.” So far, Fifa has allocated 812,000 tickets for the tournament, after a lottery last month. The vast majority of applicants were disappointed. Further sales phases will continue throughout the year. The tournament’s German organising committee has not clarified what will happen if successful holders try to sell their tickets to other fans. The tickets are not transferable, but whether it will be possible to enforce this, even in law-abiding Germany, remains to be seen. Yesterday Mr Dörendahl, who is also the deputy president of Berlin’s taxi drivers’ guild, said: “I’m going to watch it on TV. It’s the best way.” His experience of Britain is restricted to a holiday in Scotland seven years ago, with his wife and two grown-up sons. “They can all speak better English than me. I liked Scotland a lot … though it was a bit strange driving on the left.” Like most Germans, Mr Dörendahl is magnanimous about the England team. His favourite players are the Neville brothers and Paul Scholes. “England plays proper football. Your team is creative and aggressive,” he said. “I’m not sure about Beckham, though. He’s good at free kicks, but he can’t do anything else.”

On the 22nd May 2006 Belfast’s city airport was renamed in commemoration of the legendary footballer George Best. George Best was Belfast’s most famous sports hero. Best was really the best! He was said to be the best footballer in the world by many. He played for Manchester United in his prime, and made up the best Man Utd side ever. Best was a superstar in the 60s. His skill on the football pitch led to his stardom off the pitch ? a stardom that was to be his downfall. George loved his flamboyant lifestyle a bit too much and became an alcoholic, and ended his footballing career at an early age. George’s alcoholism was to lead to his death. In 2002 his liver gave up, and he received a liver transplant. But with his incessant drinking even a liver transplant couldn’t keep him alive for longer than a few years. George died on 25th November 2004. The nation mourned George’s death. The Irish, English and people from both sides of the divide in Belfast lined the streets at his funeral. Until now Belfast city airport had no other name than “Belfast city airport”, and it was decided to commemorate Belfast’s Best by naming this airport after George.
