The favorite fire board candidate of Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder stands defiant.  As related earlier, voters in West County have fought for years to first regain and then hold the Monarch Fire District away from control of the union felt betrayal when several Republican lawmakers endorsed the union-backed Swyers.  While Kinder, Auditor Schweik, and State Reps McNary and Gosen insist they endorsed the right guy, the suicide of Chief Fred Goodson may have been an attempt to jog minds to see the horrible destruction the union is perpetuating in their blood coup. &lt;br /&gt;

Chief Goodson  Attendees received the stunning revelation that the excuse for the firings pertained to the alleged mismanagment of the sexual harassment allegations is contradicted by the revalation that the firings were promised over a month in advance of the court ruling.  So it appears that were the leaders who were not even accused, then fully vindicated, they still would have been fired.  When all you have ever done is lead a fire house, how do you make that career change at 60 plus years of age, especially when you have been fired without so much as a hearing?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So let's recap the record of the "Republican," "Taxpayer Candidate,""independent of the union" Swyers.&lt;br /&gt;

                                                                1.  He has voted with the union favorite Kim Evans in a perfect block against Robyn Harris on every major decison.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2.  He successfully voted to pass a tax increase.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3.  Swyers, the certified public accountant actually voted for the tax rate increase before he even knew what the budget would be.  Standard procedure is to vote a budget and then set the rate to meet it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
4. Swyers, embarrassed by the backlash over the tax increase then voted to undo his tax increas while complaining publicly that the lower rate would make the budget complicated to design.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5. Swyers, again in a block with Evans voted to fire virtually the entire leadership of the Fire District and do so without even giving any of the accused the opportunity to have a public hearing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Why were the accused not given the chance to defend themselves?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6. Finally, Swyers the CPA voted to install a new fire chief hand-picked by the union who is not even minimally qualified.  I repeat, he does not even meet the qualifications to be hired as a private.  He has zero experience in a multi-house department and does not even have the requisite college degree. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
7.  Almost worse than the offense of hiring a union shill for chief, Swyers and Evans voted to waste money hiring an outside search firm to look nationwide for a guy they knew locally.  So what did the firm do?  Did they come up empty?&lt;br /&gt;

The unfortunate reality for Swyers and Evans is that former board member Gans has decided to not quit caring.  Gans went from active citizen in the early 90s, to union-endorsed candidate for the board, to union-opposed board member amassing incredible institutional knowledge and connections.  He predicted almost before the search firm began, that Vinyard would be their choice.  This would be laughable if not such a shameless abuse of the public trust.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The combination of these embarrassing revelations and violations of the public trust lead Director Robyn Harris to take the extraordinary step of asking his colleagues to resign.  They refused. Finally, we have someone who is taking these menaces to court. He has extracted millions in settlements from one crooked investment bank after another. When our politicians come to us for help with their re-elections 94% of us say "sure we will help, you are doing a great job".  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Like the willfully naive mother who welcomes her son home from school.  He was a total delinquent and came home and defecated in the middle of the floor and told his mother to clean it up.  She only sees her little man.  "Ok Dear, we'll pretend that did not just happen."  "That's right wench", "you got it".&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For a generation, maybe longer, every successive Congress has allowed entitlements to grow and they have done nothing.  We are the parents who have to clean up the $14.2 trillion deficit and figure out what to do with the $62 trillion (yes, that is TRILLION with a capital "T") of stinking unfunded liabilities.  While Republicans rebuke Democrats for their intransigence, "The Architect" Karl Rove convinced the Bush White House and GOP Congress that adding an $8 Trillion unfunded Medicare Part D (free drugs for seniors plan) was the way to maintain Republican faith with seniors and therefore dominate the electorate for a generation.  How did that work out?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Well, a two bit State Senator who abstained from nearly one half of his votes clobbered us in November.  People smarter than me can give all kinds of excuse for electoral losses.  I suspect the fact that when the GOP had nearly total control we maybe should have voted like Republicans and cut things.  Had we cut entitlements and not added to them, maybe the independent voters would believe us now when we try to tell them there is a difference.  Instead, we have a generation of Republican lawmakers who share culpability for the $62 trillion stinking pile on the floor.  But we have a pivotal opportunity to capture the narrative.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As Charlie Reese points out in his famous &lt;a href="http://tucsongrowup.com/2010/08/29/charlie-reese-final-column-after-49-years-on-what-else-politicians/"&gt;last column&lt;/a&gt; entitled "545 vs. 300,000,000 People":&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
There is your road map to restoring faith in the Republican Party and, by the way, to saving the Republic.  The House GOP needs to send a balanced budget to the Senate and steadfastly refuse to accept from the Senate Democrats, a conference budget that goes higher.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now, there will be plenty of excuses as to why that is impossible.  It may be tough, but nothing is impossible.  Here is my list of cuts as to where to begin:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1.  Cut all federal salaries by 15-25% or at least to a wage scale roughly equal to the average private sector or at least state government employee.  If we lose too many highly specialized employees we can give limited latitude to executives to limit their cuts.  Mail carriers, HUD workers, sorry.  The gravy train is going to roll back for a while.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2.  Eliminate all non-essential federal departments that should be handled by state governments, beginning with that loathsome US Department of Education.  Zero it out of the budget.  Before Carter created the huge new Cabinet level bureaucracy in 1980, Education was a minor "Office" founded in 1868 to distribute good teaching methodology.  I think we can handle it now.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3.  Eliminate the Department of Commerce.  Any others?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
4.  Allow oil drilling and tax it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5.  Sell off a few million acres of government owned land.  Enjoy the cash and enterprise while at the same time reducing the liability and maintenance costs of the land.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These ideas are just a start, but the principle remains the same.  If the GOP, which Party controls the House, from which all spending bills originate, truly desires a balanced budget, they need to pass a budget that is balanced and refuse to blink when the Senate Democrats try to force a budget that is in the red.  Simple.&lt;br /&gt;

At 33, wrote the Declaration of Independence.&lt;br /&gt;
At 33, took three years to revise  Virginias   legal code and wrote a Public Education bill and a statute for Religious Freedom.&lt;br /&gt;
At 36, was elected the second Governor of Virginia succeeding Patrick Henry.&lt;br /&gt;
At 40, served in Congress for two years.&lt;br /&gt;
At 41, was the American minister to  France   and negotiated commercial treaties with European nations along with Ben Franklin and John Adams.&lt;br /&gt;
At 46, served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington.&lt;br /&gt;
At 53, served as Vice President and was elected president of the American Philosophical Society.&lt;br /&gt;
At 55, drafted the Kentucky Resolutions and became the active head of Republican Party.&lt;br /&gt;
At 57, was elected the third president of the  United States &lt;br /&gt;
At 60, obtained the  Louisiana Purchase  doubling the nation's size.&lt;br /&gt;
At 61, was elected to a second term as President.&lt;br /&gt;
At 65, retired to Monticello.&lt;br /&gt;
At 80, helped President Monroe shape the Monroe Doctrine.&lt;br /&gt;
At 81, almost single-handedly created the University of Virginia and served as its first president.&lt;br /&gt;
At 83, died on the 50th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence along with John Adams&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
    Thomas Jefferson knew because he himself studied the previous failed attempts at government.  He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws and the nature of man.  That happens to be way more than what most understand today. Jefferson really knew his stuff.  A voice from the past to lead us in the future:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
    John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: "This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
    "When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe."&lt;br /&gt;

Dish washing was the job of my daughter and she was evidently was really slacking off.  We worked with her on critical strategies like pre-washing, proper loading technique and the importance of rinse aids.  Still, we found that the dishes usually had to be washed at least twice and with increasing amounts of detergent.  In this lousy economy and runaway food and fuel inflation, I was using 50% more Cascade detergent and running twice as many loads.  This deal worked out great for the the water and electric utilities, and especially for &lt;a href="http://www.cascadeclean.com/en_US/phosphatefree.do"&gt;P&amp;G (Proctor and Gamble)&lt;/a&gt; but not so well for us. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a conservative, I believe there is a right way and a wrong way to do just about anything from how to install toilet paper to what ingredients are key to a product.  That makes me a consummate label reader. So one day I noticed that Cascade was "phosphate free".  That struck me as really odd because I dutifully inject that naturally occurring element into the ecosystem every time I use my Miracle Grow "Bloom-booster" plant food.  So how could something that is good for plants be evil for the environment?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I asked my friend Kat, who is a full time environmental activist and I challenged her. I am now using at least twice as much water and electricity, not to mention time as I spent before on clean dishes.  She toed the party line, that too much phosphates in sewer systems somehow creates too much algae which disrupts ecosystems.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So I explained my situation and the fact that a huge corporation about which she should be suspicious of before me, was making out like bandits. I asked her, "Do you realize you are working for the man?"  "What?" She asked. The irony was quite amusing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It would be funny were it not so outrageous.  The whole thing reminds me of the two-flush toilets the Government mandated ostensibly as a way to conserve water and the new light bulbs that GE (Government Electric) has convinced the dim bulb Congress to force us to buy.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The phosphate free detergent is so egregious because this one is too unsupportable for even the Congress to enact it. Most of the environmental phosphates come from poop! So the lobbyists turn to the states and successfully obtained phosphate bans in the 17 silliest state lawmaking bodies. Playing both sides, P&amp;G still sells it because it is the only solution that really eliminates the white film.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a former lawmaker, the question I have is who was paying the lobbyists in favor and who was paying the lobbyists against.  Were there any against?  Did P&amp;G send in an army of lobbyists to fight this at every turn?  Did they take out full page ads in the New York Times and warn America that they would be wasting twice as much detergent, water and electricity?  If they did, they capitulated early because now that 17 states have banned phosphates in dish washing detergent, the folks at P&amp;G have now embraced the ban.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My friend Kat had a suggestion.  She said I could find this really great eco-friendly detergent at, of all places, Whole Foods.  Sure, it costs more, but it works.  There is no way I will be making any special trips to that company we tried to support with a BUYcott until they ended up forcing out their CEO for his sin of opposing Obamacare, Whole Foods, in order to pay even more for a basic product.  Instead, I found a much better solution.  &lt;br /&gt;

Meanwhile, the &lt;a href="http://stlbeacon.org/issues-politics/112=region/109735-mayor-police-group-reach-deal-to-advance-local-control"&gt;St. Louis Beacon&lt;/a&gt; reports that there is another new tactic to force unionization in Missouri.  These power plays by big labor and Democrat politicians against workers and taxpayers are without precedent.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Boeing Corporation found union demands so intolerable that they decided to build their newest plant in right to work, South Carolina.  They simply followed the logical and well worn path of major manufacturers leading from forced union states to right to work states.  Because organized labor devotes 90% of their political action funds to Democrats, it is no surprise that the Obama administration controlled National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) would do the bidding of big labor and launch air strikes against the freedom road out of forced labor land.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What is perhaps much more striking is what is happening in Missouri where Republican enjoy huge majorities in both Chambers.  Not surprisingly, Senate leaders opened the Session with the bold announcement that they would make worker liberty a top priority.  While that right to work law languishes, negotiators on a St. Louis police "local control" law announced that they have a deal between the City and the police union.  The Republican Legislature will give the City local control over the police force, and give the union their dream of forcing the City into adopting a collective bargaining deal with the union.  It seems, "local control" is a mere slogan to be applied selectively by whoever has the power.  So the rank and file cops will be forced to join the union and taxpayers will certainly learn what other cities know about how hard it is to remove that bad unionized officers.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is all the more stunning in light of the reality that despite the St. Louis City reputation as a solid Democrat and union stronghold, the City has managed to stave off forced collective bargaining.  Also this week, right to work Oklahoma lawmakers moved to further restrict public employee collective bargaining agreement.  Nevertheless, it is a Republican Legislature that is poised to be the first lawmaking body in the country to force a local government into a collective bargaining agreement. I have some specific thoughts moving forward.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We knew that Assessor Candidate Chip Wood faced a huge uphill battle starting with his running in solidly Democrat leaning St. Louis County and his starting the race against a man who already had over $200,000 in the bank.  But still we fought.  We fought because we want someone who will be professional, resist temptation to grow government, and because we like Chip.  I hope he stays involved.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In Rockwood, like Chip Wood, we knew we were challenging an entrenched teacher union network.  They have great lists of current and former teachers and administrators, and their message is simple and effective and wrong.  At the polls all day, the teachers tell the voters, "support your teachers" as they hand them their picks.  Well who opposes teachers?  Mike Geller took the bold step of running and the even bolder step of running for the taxpayers and kids.  His message was "vote for taxpayers and students".  The truth is, we build schools and fund them, not for teachers, but for kids.  We need to support our teachers as far as support for them does not harm kids.  In the end, we need to vote for kids.  Evidently, we fail to sink that message with the highly educated West County voters every cycle, and the degree to which we do sink it, we fail to succeed in turning out those voters.  And with 17% voter turnout, the unions have their way more cycles than not.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In Monarch Fire District, we had one of the oddest splits of my political life.  We have had three cycles in a row in which the taxpayers have aligned behind Fire Director Rick Gans and the union has had their candidate.  The battle lines were clear.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This time, it appears the unions retained several Republican consultants who smeared our guy Gans as they touted Swyers as the "non-union" guy to "clean up the mess".  The only mess most of us cared about was keeping a check on the union, which Gans was doing, so there was natural distrust of a candidate no one heard of, who was the father of a union firefighter.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I met Swyers at the polls, too.  He seems like a decent man who is angry about mudslinging in his first campaign.  I told him I was angry that he was obfuscating his funding.  We set up electronic campaign financing to add convenience for candidates and transparency for voters. What was I to expect from a Certified PUBLIC Accountant who was taking the extra step of paper filing his financial dislosures and avoiding public transparency?  The "P" in CPA means that ones duty is to the public first, even over the interest of any employer.  Swyers knows this.  There were at least eight or nine mailers from the Swyers camp, a tremendous amount of money spent on radio and a phone calling campaign and at least one paid staffer in Rush James.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Well, after running an aggressive, very expensive campaign with only $10,000 of reported spending, and swearing he was not union-supported, taxpayers are left wondering who really backed and funded the Swyers campaign, and will Swyers really stand for taxpayers or the union?  Will Swyers follow through and cut the firefighter pay to say, the level of the police pay?  Time will tell.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We did have several bright spots.  My other four candidates won.  Derek Grier will be a great new voice at Chesterfield City Hall.  He will join Bob Nation who easily won re-election.  In Ballwin, Mark Harder defeated long-time incumbent Pat McDermott.  This was a tremendous feat as Pat is a popular local figure known for years of dedication to the community including the operation of the Ballwin Days Fair.  Mark just outworked him.  He will be great for Ballwin.  Down in Jefferson County, my friend Dan Shaul won a seat on the Windsor school district board of education.  He will do a great job looking out for kids.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When I sum this up, I end up back in the same place I always do; Civic Education.  I spoke to an elementary school just last week as a "former Senator" because this is a hallmark of what I see as the real solution.  The message is simple, this is your government-own it.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Politicians can only do so much.  We eliminated the June (school) election date because limited ballots favor special interests.  We merged school elections with the April (municipal) elections in hopes that broader interest would improve accountability.  Still only 17% of people bothered voting. In America, we should not have to put all issues on in August and November in order to get people to care, but maybe that is what it will take. If 300 more "taxpayers" had shown up, Geller would have one.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We need to demand accountability and transparency from candidates.  It still disturbs me that the Swyers campaign was so secretive.  Union firefighters were staffing the polls for him while Lieutenant Governor Kinder recorded robo calls for him.  Is he the union candidate or the GOP accountability candidate?  We have no idea who paid for any of it, because he filed his reports on paper.  In an ideal world, voters would have the mental foundation to find that as objectionable as I do and vote accordingly.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Who is going to take up the cause of cajoling "general interest" or "taxpayer candidates" into voting in April?  Who will take up the cause of educating voters that the school board candidate who "supports the teachers" first, probably supports the taxpayers last?  Why do we put firefighters over taxpayers?  Is $126,000 in compensation and benefits not enough?  Who will watch Monarch Fire District or any of the other Districts and begin the process of educating people about the insidious nature of public unions? &lt;b&gt;Monarch Fire:  &lt;a href="http://vote4gans.com/home.html"&gt;Rick Gans&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; - despite a massively deceptive smear campaign orchestrated by three paid republican consultants who secured the endorsements of Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder and a few other notable people who do not even live here, ALL of the local republican lawmakers who have fought the fire fighter union attempts to hijack the coffers, including current State Senator Jane Cunningham, myself, former Senators Klarich and Flotron, ALL BACK GANS and urge you to tell all of your friends to reject the UNION-FUNDED SWYERS who never even voted in a Fire District election and is the father of a union fire fighter.  Who is more to be trusted to look out for Taxpayers?  Currently, taxpayers hold the board versus unions 2:1.  A vote for Gans holds the union in check. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Rockwood School Board:  &lt;a href="http://mikeforrockwood.com/home_Page.html"&gt;Mike Geller&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; - Vote for MIKE ONLY (even though you get to vote for three - more below) Mike is a good friend who helped me back in my first race in 1994.  He is concerned enough that he is making his own foray into running a race because no other conservative would.  MIKE IS RUNNING FOR YOUR SAKE.&lt;br /&gt;

Mike has made the incredibly bold step of campaigning for taxpayers and students.  Unlike every one of his opponents (Doelle is calling himself a conservative while being endorsed by several unions), Mike was too honest to say one thing to the unions and another to you.&lt;br /&gt;
Mike is all about high standards and choices for parents.  Yes, he has three children in Rockwood, but one at Rossman, his alma mater.&lt;br /&gt;
The three top vote getters win.  If 2000 union voters vote for their three, that is 600+ votes each.  If 2000 taxpayers vote only for Mike, he wins easy.  VOTE ONLY FOR GELLER.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;County Assessor:  &lt;a href="http://www.chipwoodforassessor.com/indexl.html"&gt;Chip Wood&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; - Chip is a great guy whom I have gotten to know recently.  He is the professional real estate expert who the Republican Party put up against the Democrat's lawyer/politician. I do not know how else to describe him, but he is a great guy with all the right values who just wants to serve, and everyone who meets him wants to help him.  This is his second run at the office and no one works harder.  Please support Derek if you live in Ward 2.&lt;br /&gt;

Chesterfield City Council, Ward 4:  Bob Nation - Bob is my Councilman.  I have been impressed by his dedication to the job, especially when we asked hm for his support on a Wilson Rd. bike trail and I "caught him in the act" of walking the area on his own time in order to get a full perspective on our request. &lt;br /&gt;

Ballwin City Council, Ward 2:  Mark Harder - I have known Mark for almost as long as I have known Mike.  Even though this is a non-partisan office, Mark is a very dedicated Republican activist who will take sound GOP values to the Ballwin Board of Aldermen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Windsor School District:  Dan Shaul - I have known Dan for a number of years.  He is great guy who stands for all the right things.  If you are in Jefferson County but not in Windsor, consider helping Dan at the polls or calling your friends.&lt;br /&gt;

About 10 years ago, two candidates for a seat in North County got the identical number of votes, over 1500 each.  How many people were self-flagellating in penance for not bothering to vote? As a former lawmaker, I had some experience and, as it happens, opinions on the subject.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Julia, The term far right is really a misnomer. It depends on what you mean by it. I am really passionate about making the most sensible laws. By sensible I mean liberal, or free. I measured every vote by whether it added freedom or removes it.  I called it my "freedom litmus test".&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So if you were proposing more taxes or a new program that was expensive, I would see that as creating more of a burden on taxpayers, so it was "anti-liberal".&lt;br /&gt;
If you proposed an anti-smoking law, even though I do not smoke, I would resist that. Who am I to tell someone he cannot smoke, or tell a restaurant OWNER what he could do inside his four walls with consenting adults?&lt;br /&gt;
So we find that people who consider themselves "liberal" are actually leading the charge to limit a lot of freedoms while people labeled "far right" are actually the ones typically most vocal about retaining liberty.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As for collective bargaining "rights", FDR, the most famous progressive actually said that public employee collective bargaining was unconscionable.&lt;br /&gt;
A public employee union is funded by taxpayers in order to extract more pay, more benefits, and less work from those same taxpayers. Voting for any union-backed candidate is like putting an embezzler in charge of your bank. He may look nice, but his goal and yours for your money are completely different. Does that make sense?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Look at California. The unions managed to put in a majority Democrats in that once solidly western Republican state. The Democrats then raise union workers' pay, slash private contracting, and do everything they can to make more union members. Those union bosses then spend even more money electing more Democrats. California is bankrupt and yet has over 4000 retirees earning over $100,000 per year in retirement.&lt;br /&gt;
In my fire district, Monarch, the union spends $100,000 to $200,000 on each race for a single seat. They never lose. Today, the firefighters average over six figures in pay, overtime and benefits and work just eight 24 hour shifts per month. Those hundreds of thousands of dollars they have to spend are literally my tax dollars which now are being used to pull more tax dollars from my pocket-literally. They want to raise our tax rates and even start charging extra for ambulance rides that are already paid for. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You have heard the term military industrial complex. Military people retire early and run for office or go to work for military contractors and push for more military spending. It is the same with Democrats and unions and State and Federal government. Missouri has resisted this as Republicans have held enough power and joined with conservative Dems to moderate those moves. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So in Missouri we did things like ban teacher strikes. Union-heavy Illinois allows them. My aunt lives near Chicago. Her co-worker will retire at $90,000 per year in retirement at 60 and will be up over $120,000 by 75.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As for Wisconsin, like Illinois and California, they are bankrupt after years of the public union - Democrat complex. They cannot maintain the status quo and balance the budget. Reducing the nonsensical public employee collective bargaining rights is a move to break up the complex that created the problem. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Wisconsin voters knew that their liberal Dems had bankrupted the state and so they took a chance on Repubs who would restore fiscal sanity. The people really asked for this.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

REPUBLICANS HAVE NOT BEEN IN FULL CONTROL OF STATE GOVERNMENT FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS, SO THERE IS A BIG MESS TO CLEAN UP.  GOVERNOR LEPAGE WILL DO IT.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Subject: God bless Maine's new governor - Let's get some facts straight!   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    The new Maine Governor, Paul LePage, is making New Jersey's Chris Christie look like an enabler. He isn't afraid to say what he thinks, and judging by the comments heard at the cigar shop and other non-political gathering places, every time Gov. LePage opens his mouth, his popularity goes up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    He brought down the house at his inauguration when he shook his fist toward the media box and said, "You're on notice! I've inherited a financially-troubled state to run. Observe...cover...but don't whine if I don't waste time responding to your every whim for your amusement." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    During his campaign for governor he was talking to commercial fishermen who are struggling because of federal fisheries rules. They complained that President Obama brought his family to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park for a long Labor Day holiday and found time to meet with union leaders, but wouldn't talk to them. LePage replied, "I'd tell him to go to hell and get out of my state." Media crucified LePage, but he jumped 6 points in the pre-election poll.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    The Martin Luther King incident was a political sandbag which brought him national exposure. The 'lame stream' media crucified him, but word on the street is very positive. The NAACP specifically asked him to spend MLK Day visiting black inmates at the Maine State Prison. He told them that he would meet with ALL inmates regardless of race if he were to visit the prison. The NAACP balked and then put out a news release claiming falsely that he refused to participate in any MLK events. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    He read it in the paper for the first time the next morning while being driven to an event and he went ballistic because none of the reporters had called him for comment before running the NAACP release.  He arrived at that event and said on TV camera, "if they want to play the race card on me, they can kiss my butt" and he reminded them that he has an adopted black son from Jamaica and that he attended the local MLK Breakfast every year that he was mayor of Waterville. (He started his morning there on MLK Day.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    He then stated that there's a right way and a wrong way to meet with the governor and he put all special interests on notice that press releases, media leaks and all demonstrations would prove to be the wrong way. He said any other group which acted like the NAACP could expect to be at the bottom of the governor's priority list! &lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;    He then did the following, and judging from local radio talk show callers, his popularity increased even more: The state employees union complained because he waited until 3 p.m. before closing state offices and facilities and sending non-emergency personnel home during the last blizzard. The prior governor would often close offices for the day with just a forecast before the first flakes. (Each time the state closes for snow, it costs the taxpayers about $1-million in wages for no work in return.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    LePage was CEO of the Marden's chain of discount family bargain retail stores before election as governor. He noted that state employees getting off work early could still find lots of retail stores open to shop. So, he put the state employees on notice by announcing: "If Marden's is open, Maine is open!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    He told state employees: "We live in Maine in the winter, for heaven's sake, and should know how to drive in it. He can hire the best spin doctors from Madison Avenue and make massive cash contributions to his favorite pols.  So Senator Harry Reid, a Mormon, and Barney Frank, whatever he is, want to reverse Congressional precedent and &lt;a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hU4tF_tgCcHKh75VaT3bkxCnFP4g?docId=08621650021d46198a75298a9bf884d3"&gt;"re-legalize" internet gambling&lt;/a&gt;.  Sadly, their favorite argument, posited by Barney "freedom for consenting adults (and page boys)" Frank is a twisted half truth that no honest liberal and no Republican should be caught dead defending.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, "consenting adults" assumes that the internet gambler will be well, consenting.  Is the sick addict consenting?  No more than a young intern is consenting when Frank has him in his sights, is a pathological gambler a consenting adult.  When the wife discovers "it is all gone" and her sick husband has left she and her children homeless, is she consenting?  The Treasurer of Christian County Missouri embezzled over $600,000 from his taxpayers to support his habit.  Were they consenting?  When the taxpayers of Missouri paid for the prosecution and subsequent incarceration, were they consenting?  Missouri, like almost every other State, still barred gambling when Gary Melton was the "big roller".  Illinois placed a casino in eye shot of the famous Arch.  Gary Melton left over an estimated $700,000 in Illinois.  Missourians got the bills.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most devious argument is the Frank assertion that his interest is letting "adults make a decision" about where they spend their money.  Really?  So is Frank moving to restrain federal agents who are breaking up home poker matches?  Is that the question?  Of course it is not.  This is the big lie.  If you want to gamble with your friends, gamble in Vegas, buy a lottery ticket, gamble at a bingo hall or go to a real live casino, you can find at least one of those outlets within a few miles of every consenting adult in the Country.  Frank, an evil genius, is using a reasonable appeal in a false application.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The question for policy makers is not about further restraining gambling, but whether gambling on a large scale, an infinite scale in the case of the internet, something wise to promote or even allow?  St. Louisans were shocked, when the brother of a prominent contractor was &lt;a href="http://stlamerican.com/articles/2010/06/10/news/local_news/localnews01.txt"&gt;murdered&lt;/a&gt; in a botched robbery attempt.  Tyrone Thompson, a former cop and dedicated mentor of troubled youth, was in his car picking up a friend when approached by two young men with guns.  It turns out, the thugs needed money.  They lost badly in a friendly home dice game and set out on foot to steal their money back.  The "house" won, and the victim's family was left holding the bag.  But Frank and Reid twist the question from whether more gambling is a desirable public policy goal to a false question about freedom to gamble.  We have that freedom.  To see how silly this is, the precise argument could be applied allowing consenting adults to do absolutely anything else.  Why will he not allow consenting adults to take steroids or methamphetamines, gamble their money on Wall Street or with Madoff?  So Mr. Frank, if it is all about leaving consenting adults alone, how about allowing consenting adults to listen to Rush Limbaugh, you bloviating fraud?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, one can see how a libertarian reaches the conclusion that regulating gambling is somehow un-American. even though every single state in the union, save Nevada, banned it in their Constitutions back in the day.  Even Republicans can get lost in arguments like "it is just a business, like any other business".  But consider a "progressive".  The late Senator Paul Simon (D-Illinois) &lt;a href="http://senatorpaulsimon.org/"&gt;fought gambling endlessly&lt;/a&gt;, speaking from the floor of the US Senate about how it corrupts public officials and hurts people.  Barney Frank on the other hand, a progressive, who feigns anger with predatory businesses that hurt little people should not enjoy this privilege. Casinos and governments, where the casinos are domiciled will make out handsomely. As Whip, Congressman Cantor carries the message of the caucus.  So what does he think about healthcare?  Does he support full repeal of Obamacare?  Does he share the view of most Americans that the federal government should get back into its Constitutional cage and get out of health care, education, mohair subsidies and a host of other spheres of American life over which they should have zero sway?  Nope!  Sadly, Congressman Cantor has just affirmed our worst fear.  He thinks the federal government should absolutely be regulating health care and guaranteeing Americans "free stuff".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I suppose the Congressman fancies himself a limited government fiscal conservative.  Ok.  What does that mean?  I thought it meant that the federal government should handle basic things like fighting wars and coining money (and please coin way less than you are).  Everything else should be left to the "several states".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But hey, at least the Republican leadership wants to give us less free stuff than the Democrats.  Here is what Cantor says about Obamacare:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    “We too don’t want to accept any insurance company’s denial of someone and coverage for that person because he or she might have a pre-existing condition,” he said. “Likewise we want to make sure that someone of your age has the ability to access affordable care if it’s under your parent’s plan or elsewhere.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, the Democrat are promising a chicken in every pot and the Republicans are promising a nice broth.  Great message guys.   Certainly your pollsters really dug deep for that.  Here is a message for you:  Resign now!  You are incorrigible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps we need to spell this out for you:  THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS NO ROLE IN PRIVATE HEALTH CARE REGULATION!  In order to make this simple, one can find the relevant section of the US Constitution pasted below.  Perhaps the American people need to nail copies of it onto all of your doors.  One sees lots of duties related to war, treaties and coining money.  Giving us free health care just is not there.  And please quit peaking into the "penumbras".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To take this illustration further, Cantor tells us he will give us the right to keep our kids on our policies until age 26.  Well Congressman, it might interest you to know that all Missourians got that right in January 2008.  I know, as I passed the law as a State Legislator.  You see, regulating insurance companies is a State matter, not a federal matter.  So keep your chicken broth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So how about pre-existing conditions?  To be fair, this is a tougher issue, but nevertheless one best handled by the states.  But what are you promising, "no denial because of a pre-existing condition".  So what if my car has a pre-existing condition?  "Hello Mr. Insurance man.  I just wrecked my car.  I am on the way to the repair shop.  I would like to go ahead and buy a policy now.  Congressman Cantor says you cannot deny me.  Where should I send my check?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Congressman, in case you did not notice.  All of our health insurance rates are going up because of wacky ideas like that.  They violate basic principles of economics so they do not work.  They will not work better because you will do less of them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Congressman, the American people are cynical.  They threw you out because when you were in power, you played by the Rove play book.  "The Architect" believed that Republicans could hold power by giving stuff away in order to compete with the Democrats for blocks of voters.  That is how we got policies like massive education spending to win soccer moms, open boarders to win Mexicans, and Medicare Part D to win seniors.  As Americans found our Party looked pretty much like the other Party, and the spending made us broke, that is also how we got thrown out of office.  Congressman, not only do we not want your free stuff, our Country cannot afford Socialist light. Recall the election of 1948, when the  Republican Party’s heavily-favored, moderate and uninspiring nominee lost to Truman in a race in which he was heavily favored to win.  The tragedy is not that the Chicago Tribune got the headline wrong, but that the American people lost either way given the choice between a left-leaning Republican and a slightly right-leaning Democrat. The housewife-turned-activist Schlafly, was horrified to see the kingmakers actively manipulating the process in an attempt to steal the nomination away from the legitimate Republican popular candidate, Barry Goldwater.  She rushed tens of thousands of copies of her book to Convention delegates who then stood with Goldwater to win the battle, if not the war.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Skeptics will wonder how it is possible that a selection of such magnitude could really be manipulated.  If you are among them, ask yourself this question.  How on earth did two candidates so universally unpopular in Republican circles as Bob Dole and John McCain manage to win their nominations?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1996, I joined most Republican activists in backing Senator Phil Gramm.   That was not a hard choice.  The Ph.D., economist, Texas blue dog Democrat, had ushered Reagan’s tax cuts through the Democrat controlled House into the waiting arms of the Republican Senate.   In so doing, he helped turn our Country around.  Realizing how his Party had become more Socialist than Democrat, he did an amazing thing.  He resigned his seat and re-ran as a Republican.  We loved him.  You probably forgot about him.  The kingmakers stole the 1996 nomination from him, and from us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why is this important now?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Governor Mit Romney stands eager to win the office his father never did.   As a prolific candidate in leftist Massachusetts, he is on record vacillating on issues such as abortion and even the stature of Ted Kennedy.   He is popular with the kingmakers.  When the number 1 or 2 issue on voters’ minds is the repeal of Obama along with his Obamacare, conservatives are understandably cautious about the prospect of having as their nominee, the author of Romneycare.  Schlafly warned of GOP candidates who echo the position choices of leftists.  Hello?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if Schlafly provided the tool to nominate Goldwater in 1964, and the sheer force of Ronald Reagan being, well, the Great One, allowed him to win the nomination in 1980, the Tea Party movement holds the key to beating the kingmakers in 2012.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Defeating the moderates in 2012 will require two things.  First, the disparate groups will have to settle on one candidate, and do so fast.  Second, they will have to work together, united and coordinated, grooming  activists at all levels including the Tea Party Youth, Tea Party Students and Tea Party Centenarians.   Hey, pull out all the stops!  Right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Certainly the midterm elections crushed the Obama-Reid-Pelosi oligarchy and slowed our great Country from a breakneck pace toward Socialism back down to mere creeping Socialism.  There is so much to repair not just from Obama but even from the past Republican years.  We need a nominee committed to nothing less than full restoration of our Constitutional Republic.  Any hint of the stench of neo-conservative statism is unacceptable.  As the pendulum swings, we appear to be returning from the leftward most swing of Obamafascism on a trajectory far back to the Founding Fathers’ perfect, small government vision.  It is our watch. Allred offered up "Darling Nicky", once the trusted, well-compensated housekeeper to the ridiculously generous Meg Whitman.  Nicky is now the lying, overpaid illegal, backstabbing Benedict Arnold thanks to the camera-chasing Allred.  We might expect that Allred, the self-styled feminist advocate would be gushing over the idea of putting a strong woman in the California Governor's mansion.  Instead, she manipulated the vulnerable "Nicky" into putting her criminal status on the line on the alter of the Jerry Brown campaign.  Just where is Moonbeam Jerry Brown when justice is called for? He is riding the politics of personal destruction wave into the Governor's mansion.  But Allred's choosing a leftist male over a vulnerable woman is old hat phony feminism in the leftist playbook.  The other "collateral" damage in the tawdry tactic is far more insidious.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nicky Diaz, is now in legal jeopardy.  At Allred's urging, she has now confessed to lying on federal documents and conning the Whitmans, honorable, pillars of the State of California into hiring her.  Nicky is somehow now indignant that the Whitmans, upon discovering her status, chose to terminate their contractor agreement.  Diaz faces an uncertain future now.  What is not uncertain, is that all illegal immigrants, including political refugees, are now fair game in political smears, thanks the Democrats.  The new tactic; confusing the illegal immigration debate to smear Republicans.  The tactic in California is now being attempted in America's Heartland.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Missouri Senate candidate Robin Carnahan launched an "illegal" immigrant attack of her own yesterday.  "Congressman Blunt hired an illegal worker and used his official office and Washington connections" to try to assist her immigration process, Corey Platt, a senior adviser at the Missouri Democratic Party said in a conference call with reporters.  Really?  Lets break that statement down, shall we?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you catch the wicked, depraved twist?  More on that in a moment.  The Democrat opposition research team has uncovered an alleged "offense" from 20 years ago.  No statute of limitations here.  The Blunts presumably hired the woman to do some work for a short time.  The facts are in dispute, but it appears the woman worked less than six months.  Democrats say she was a domestic worker, the campaign says she worked at the church.  What they are doing is making an  erroneous and egregious comparison.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In both cases, Whitman and Blunt, the argument is that unknowingly hiring a domestic worker is an offense that should speak to fitness to serve.  In making this argument, they are comparing corporate interests who knowingly use illegal immigrants to gain an advantage over their competitors to individuals looking for help around their house or church.  Nice try.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Worse yet, the second assault by Carnahan on Blunt is that he "used his office" to give aid to the woman described as a Nicaraguan political refugee and help move her paperwork along.  Is that not exactly what we want in a politician?  He showed compassion on a vulnerable woman, not a wealthy donor, and wrote a letter to make sure she did not fall through bureaucratic cracks.  By attempting to turn this act of kindness into a millstone around Blunt's neck, the Carnahan and Brown campaigns are signalling to all Americans that instead of compassion, you better immediate turn in any illegal you suspect or else a political operative might use it against you in the future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As per usual, these desperate campaigns have launched these attacks in the final hour of their lagging campaigns.  Carnahan, is stuck on six points behind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bigger question here, is what does Nicky "I am Rosa Parks" have to do with Whitman's fitness to be Governor, or a Nicaraguan refugee with Blunt's fitness to fight Obama in the Senate?  Whitman, while building a huge business success story was supposed to hire a private detective to thoroughly vet an agency-provided domestic worker.   Blunt, while Secretary of State, showed enough compassion to try to help someone possessing little capability of ever being able to repay the favor.  There is no proportionality to these acts  and the acts of a for profit enterprise run on the backs of illegals paid below the minimum wage.  This is the true aim of illegal immigrant reformers, not using the issue to trash the true immigration reform candidates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Where is the duplicitous left-wing in all this?  Instead of celebrating Blunt and Carnahan for their accomplishments and compassion for vulnerable people, they trash them.   In so doing, they have created a Big Brother environment in which one is wise to turn in any suspected illegal and no matter what, give no comfort or quarter to them.  In their zeal for short term political gain, the Democrats have put every illegal immigrant in greater jeopardy than 50 Arizona laws. Patriotic conservatives of all flavors, have risen up in extraordinary ways, in every corner of the country.  It appears all but certain that Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be dethroned. &lt;a href="http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/"&gt;Dick Morris&lt;/a&gt; even predicts as many as 100 new Republican Congressmen giving many people really high expectations for the new Congress.  Others fear that for all their trouble from organizing to holding rallies to knocking on doors, they will only replace the leftist Democrats with RINO Republicans who will squander the victory.  Will we get Speaker &lt;a href="http://johnboehner.house.gov/"&gt;Boehner&lt;/a&gt;, or a fresh new conservative leader who will truly take a big stick to big government.   A closer look at the numbers should give conservatives reason to be really excited and also a cause for continued resolve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want a conservative Congress, you have to ask yourself just what kind of conservative are you after.  &lt;a href="http://web.missouri.edu/~dak6w7"&gt;Drew Kurlowski&lt;/a&gt;, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Missouri who studies voting behavior and partisanship, referred me to a dataset popular with political science academics called &lt;a href="http://voteview.com/dwnomin.htm"&gt;DW-Nominate&lt;/a&gt;.  It is a tremendous resource that meticulously compiles the voting records of the Congress going back to the1st Congress.  If you want to know who George Washington’s favorite conservative was, this is your site.  Moreover, they settled on a definition of “conservative” that is tremendously useful.  Move over “fiscal conservative” and “social conservative” and make room for (limited) "government intervention in the economy”.  Let’s call it L’GIE.  So who are the ligies?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That &lt;a href="http://www.campaignforliberty.com/"&gt;most potent army&lt;/a&gt; of political groupies has one more reason to crow about  &lt;a href="http://paul.house.gov/"&gt;Congressman Ron Paul&lt;/a&gt;.   He sets the bar as champion of limited government.  No one is close.  For the rest of the nation, imagine what a force his son, Senate candidate &lt;a href="http://www.randpaul2010.com/"&gt;Rand Paul&lt;/a&gt; will be in the Senate.  "Senator Paul" is just the beginning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By sorting the Senate in order of most conservative to least, it is no surprise that the fiscal champion, &lt;a href="http://coburn.senate.gov/public/"&gt;Tom Coburn&lt;/a&gt; of Oklahoma gets the award.  Conservative darling, &lt;a href="http://demint.senate.gov/public/"&gt;Jim DeMint&lt;/a&gt; is close behind. Which one of them will run from President?  Hint:  I asked Coburn’s office already, someone needs to call DeMint. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another trend is fun to see but stands as no great surprise.  The sisters from Maine, Senators Snowe and Collins compete for dead last among Republicans but still destroy every single Democrat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is where it gets fun for conservatives.  There are five Republican House members making strong bids for the Senate.  None of them ranks lower than the Senator being challenged.   In Missouri, Roy Blunt is running extremely hard and looks almost a shoe in to replace Kit Bond.  Bond ranks a surprisingly low 35 out of 40 on the conservative scale.  By contrast, &lt;a href="http://www.royblunt.com/"&gt;Roy Blunt&lt;/a&gt; would join the Senate as the 6th most conservative on the L’IGGE scale.    Illinoisans may finally be so fed up with infamous Chicago Democrat corruption that they will elect Republican Congressman Mark Kirk.  While the Illinois Tea Party activists preferred Patrick Hughes, it may be a nice consolation prize to hear that &lt;a href="http://www.kirkforsenate.com/"&gt;Mark Kirk&lt;/a&gt; at 23, is eight points to the right of Bond.  It is important to note, that Kirk is pro-choice while Bond is pro-life.  Also, because the House and Senate members do not take the identical votes, comparisons are imperfect yet illustrative.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This data will surprise a lot of patriotic Tea Party activists who are disappointed by Mssrs Blunt and Kirk for support for the high profile TARP and “cash for clunkers” votes.   High profile votes however, often overshadow the facts in balance.  According to Kurlowski, “I think it is a fair assessment to say that Blunt has compiled a more conservative record in the House, than Bond has in the Senate. The DW-Nominate scores show it, and ideological rankings from major interest groups on both sides of the aisle confirm the data.”   The same surprisingly, applies to Kirk.  So the Illinoisans who suffered under liberals Durbin (10th), Burris (97th) and Obama, for many years left casting an occasional jealous gaze across the Mighty Mississippi River upon Missourians who enjoyed 18 years of Kit Bond’s leadership, now have the opportunity to install a centrist technically  more conservative than Bond!  Happy Day!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All told, taking the House and vastly improving the Senate, conservatives have a lot to be excited about.  The next vote will be for a Republican Speaker, and quite possibly, Republican Senate Majority Leader.   The next task for patriots is to challenge their delegates to vote for conservative leadership. For Obama to fiddle while American tax dollars burn and a handful of individuls get rich off blood money is about what we have come to expect from this administration.  Read and conclude for yourself:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I missed Aram Rostom's expose of what is in effect and in part a giant Pentagon-to-Taliban payola scheme when it came out earlier this month in the Nation (not ordinarily high on my reading list). Now circulating in various publications on the Left -- but sent my way by John Bernard (no Lefty, he) -- this story of the systemic US-Afghan corruption that undergirds our continued presence in Afghanistan must not be dismissed as political fodder for just one side of the spectrum. This is a story of central importance to the American people, and deserves Left, Right and middle of the road attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Roston's digging attempts to lay bare the interlocking webs of corruption and pay-offs in which the US has enmeshed itself in an effort to  supply US outposts in hostile territory -- i.e., all of Afghanistan. Our military people depend on those supply convoys for everything. The brilliant tactic of the students revealed a shocking insight into the minds of some who are teaching our children.  From the student newspaper we get the following:  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;But James Wertsch, the Marshall S. Snow Professor and director of International &amp; Area Studies, said that the emergence of communism and socialism are not big issues today and that new forms of nationalism are currently greater issues for America.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am not sure what he means by "new forms" of nationalism or "greater issues" but the last time I checked it was leftist groups that were killing civilians, not the tea partiers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you think that nationalism is a greater issue than creeping socialism, please return to your study through wikipedia. When I was an exchange student in &lt;a href="http://www.deutschland.de/"&gt;Germany&lt;/a&gt; in 1983, I found myself in endless debates about this, and about my &lt;a href="http://www.reaganlibrary.com/"&gt;President Ronald Reagan &lt;/a&gt;and his desire to build a &lt;a href="http://www.heritage.org/research/nationalsecurity/hl1078.cfm"&gt;missile defense system in Western Europe&lt;/a&gt;.   I loved the German people.  The kids were so refreshing in many ways, but their cynical views of the motives of my President shocked me.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;I admit that I am a little unique.   As a fairly young child, I poured through every issue of &lt;a href="http://www.time.com/time/"&gt;Time magazine&lt;/a&gt;, which is like our version of the German magazine, &lt;a href="http://www.zeit.de/index"&gt;&lt;i style=""&gt;Die Zeit&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  &lt;a href="http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.org/"&gt;Jimmy Carter&lt;/a&gt; was the President.  He talked of peace while cutting our defense spending.  I remember being very scared seeing &lt;a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=zgKNBIhUjoIC&amp;amp;pg=PA185&amp;amp;lpg=PA185&amp;amp;dq=soviet+and+us+ICBM+1979&amp;amp;source=bl&amp;amp;ots=KbgUgS5IUF&amp;amp;sig=irGuBkV_pPCzsY7zuOGQxvL_kXU&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;ei=GKbzSsvDNoO0tgfayZC7Aw&amp;amp;sa=X&amp;amp;oi=book_result&amp;amp;ct=result&amp;amp;resnum=10&amp;amp;ved=0CCUQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&amp;amp;q=soviet%20and%20us%20ICBM%201979&amp;amp;f=false"&gt;charts and graphs comparing our defense systems&lt;/a&gt; including war planes, ships and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).  The American armaments were blue and the Soviets vastly superior forced were Red.  Here my story gets really odd.  I was 12 years old when I read &lt;a href="http://www.george-orwell.org/1984"&gt;George Orwell’s 1984&lt;/a&gt;.  The year was 1979.  I was so struck by what I read and the parallels to the modern Soviet Union, that I picked up a copy of the &lt;a href="http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm"&gt;Communist Manifesto.&lt;/a&gt; What I read made me nearly shriek in fear.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;The Communist manifesto holds that communism cannot work unless the World is communist. The other fact I read, was that every time in this Century that America was attacked, a Democrat was in the White House, downsizing our military.  So it was clear that the nearer the Soviet empire came to economic collapse, and had superior military capabilities, the more likely it was that they would attack.  They were aggressively building up while Carter, the face of America, was downsizing our military.  I often had trouble sleeping at night for fear of the Soviet missile attack.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;  Then we elected Ronald Reagan.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;Reagan became the new face of America to the World.   My German friends did not like him.  He moved fast and completely changed the course of America.  He began rebuilding our military and he delivered that famous speech in Berlin in which he challenge &lt;a href="http://www.time.com/time/time100/leaders/profile/gorbachev.html"&gt;Soviet President Michael Gorbachev&lt;/a&gt; to &lt;a href="http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=tear+down+this+wall&amp;amp;oe=utf-8&amp;amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;amp;client=firefox-a&amp;amp;um=1&amp;amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;amp;ei=y6rzSvSCKceWtgecuaCqAw&amp;amp;sa=X&amp;amp;oi=video_result_group&amp;amp;ct=title&amp;amp;resnum=4&amp;amp;ved=0CCEQqwQwAw"&gt;“tear down this wall!”&lt;/a&gt; My teenage German friends kept arguing that Reagan was a war-monger and that while Americans were good people, our President was bad.  I tried to explain that in our political system, you cannot separate the two.  Our President is us.  The President cannot go to war without the American people.  But he will go to war to protect you.  He wants to use American tax dollars to place a &lt;a href="http://www.ronaldreagan.com/sdi.html"&gt;missile defense system&lt;/a&gt; in Western Europe to protect you, because he felt a moral duty to you.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;One of the most momentous experiences in my life was in June of 1990.   I was back in Germany!   Now I was married and my new wife, Gina and I were making a fast trek through Europe on our way to Berlin.  On Saturday, June 16, 1990 I had the amazing privilege to &lt;a href="http://www.berlin-wall.net/photogallery.htm"&gt;chop on the wall&lt;/a&gt;.   I got very emotional and still do to this day, at the realization that I was literally tearing open the cage that imprisoned my fellow man.  This was of course a symbolic move, although we wondered whether Gorbachev would change his mind or become the victim of a coup and the Wall chopping would stop.  So I joined hundreds of people, mostly Germans, I rented a hammer and chisel and I chopped.   The real satisfaction was that I had helped to elect a President who valued the individual lives of any human being, without regard to geography, religion or people group enough that he would risk everything to set them free.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;  Now we have a new face of America. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;We elected &lt;a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/president-obama/"&gt;Barak Obama&lt;/a&gt;, and he does not feel that moral duty to you as Reagan did, at least not enough to stand up to the shrill American voices that &lt;a href="http://www.unitedforpeace.org/"&gt;hate the American military&lt;/a&gt;.  So he will not be there on November 9&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; to Celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall.  I do not think he sees it the way you do.  He will also not participate in the &lt;a href="http://www.westminster-mo.edu/news/news/Pages/FreedomWithoutWallsCelebration.aspx"&gt;festivities on the campus of my College&lt;/a&gt;.  &lt;a href="http://www.westminster-mo.edu/Pages/default.aspx"&gt;Westminster College&lt;/a&gt;, in my &lt;a href="http://www.mo.gov/"&gt;State of Missouri&lt;/a&gt;, is where the great Allied leader &lt;a href="http://www.winstonchurchill.org/"&gt;Winston Churchill&lt;/a&gt; gave the &lt;a href="http://history1900s.about.com/library/weekly/aa082400a.htm"&gt;Iron Curtain Speech&lt;/a&gt;.  He told the World how millions of our fellow human beings were being stuffed into the cage, the very cage I was privileged to help dismantle.  He had a way with words.  On the campus of another American College he gave his shortest speech “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give in.”  But I digress.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;Our new President believes that you are on your own.  As the &lt;a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/russiagov/putin.htm"&gt;KGB &lt;/a&gt;agent-&lt;a href="http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&amp;amp;aid=5159"&gt;turned-billionaire&lt;/a&gt;, puppet master of the &lt;a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/11/vladimir-putin-president-joint-decision"&gt;Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin&lt;/a&gt; conducts war games of an assault on Poland, &lt;a href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article6838058.ece"&gt;Obama has decided to tear down the American missiles from Poland&lt;/a&gt;.   We knew that he cared less as he &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaMSAYkPQis"&gt;promised to remove our protection from the Iraqi people&lt;/a&gt;.  150 of them were slaughtered just this week.   He really wants to find a &lt;a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/18/obama.afghanistan.canada/"&gt;way out of Afghanistan&lt;/a&gt; and pull our soldiers out just as you are pulling your U.N. workers out right now.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So my new President will not be there with you, like &lt;a href="http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/berliner.htm"&gt;John F. Kennedy&lt;/a&gt; and Ronald Reagan were there for you.   He has other priorities.   I really wish I could be there to &lt;a href="http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/__PR/GIC/2009/11/04__November__9__PM.html"&gt;celebrate with you&lt;/a&gt;.  Unfortunately, with the passing of time, I have five children, our economy is bad, and I too, have other priorities.  So I am sorry that my President, the American face to the World will not be there for you.   I feel just a little better knowing that you asked America to give him to you. I entered the debate believing it would be an intellectual exercise; we would joust with each other and after it was all over shake hands and exit with mutual respect.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Mutual respect?  The black panelists on my side of the question were called uncle toms, the white member was accused of seeking to repeal the civil rights act. Honesty?  No lie was too large to tell; statistics were made up, facts were created to suit the argument.  And there would be no shaking of hands at the conclusion of the debate, in fact barely a graceful word was spoken.  It was in that moment I realized the left not only disagreed with me; they hated me.  I was not only wrong; I was evil.  That slap in the face knocked the rose colored glasses from my eyes and I am now seeing clearly:  we are in the midst of a cultural and ideological war and while Conservatives concern themselves with civility and rules, progressives are playing for keeps.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;It is a continuing fascination for me that conservatives are constantly depicted as wearing Jackboots and engaging in intimidation, violence and general thuggery.  However, current events suggest that more often it is the new left that is wearing jack boots and not the right.    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: left;"&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;For instance who was doing the goose-stepping when radio host Rush Limbaugh was booted from an investment group trying to buy the NFL franchise St. Louis Rams? The new left lied and slandered Limbaugh with the aim of denying him an economic opportunity.  Denying a man opportunity because we don’t like what he believes, what he says or what he looks like is (or should be) anathema to a free society. Shame on Dave Checketts and Roger Goodell for giving in to cheap intimidation and ideological bigotry! By their cowardice we are all diminished. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;Many on the left disagree and are no doubt satisfied at the outcome. But for whom does the bell toll next?  Who else’s opinions will be objectionable?  What makes a football team any different from any other business that employs people?  Should anyone with unpopular beliefs be barred from owning, say, a Burger King franchise?  Should we then also check ideological credentials at the gates of certain neighborhoods?  The doors to our schools?   &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;The left often dons the coat of righteous indignation because it tends to give one an air of civility.  They are not, however, above some good old fashioned name calling or back alley beat-downs.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;Recall the response of Dennis Rivera, &lt;span style="color:#222222;"&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34);"&gt;health care chairman of the Service Employees International Union, (SEIU) – as well as a master of irony -- following the arrest of two of his esteemed members for allegedly pummeling a conservative protestor senseless.  Rivera denounced conservative “terrorist tactics” aimed at derailing the debate on health care reform. Terrorists tactics are now defined as peaceful protest.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;color:#222222;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;Rivera is not the only one with a rather elastic definition of terrorism; Rosabeth Moss Kanter a professor at Harvard business school writing in Politico justifies the depiction of tea partiers, conservatives and health care reform protesters as racist buffoons because they are enemies of America.  Kanter writes: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;color:#171717;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; color: rgb(23, 23, 23); font-family: 'Courier New';" lang="EN"&gt;“President [Barack] Obama is marginalizing not just his enemies but those of the American people. He is attacking organizations standing in the way of progress toward reforming health care or cleaning up the conditions that led to the financial crisis. He is putting on notice advocates of greed — instead of the greater good — that they no longer have public legitimacy.” &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;color:#222222;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: 'Courier New';" lang="EN"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';" lang="EN"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;Yes you read it correctly.  America’s enemies are not Islamist, North Korean demagogues, or even Maoists and admitted communists working at the highest levels of our government.  Rather they are American citizens that disagree with this president and other new liberals on the degree to which government should interfere and control our economic and cultural institutions.  No doubt they had better keep their opinions to themselves lest they be greeted with some of what Rush got.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;I have been working on a collection of thoughts by Americans on their love of America.  After agreeing to participate a comedian friend of mine reneged.  He joked that he didn’t want to be dragged from his car and beaten for having his name appear in a conservative book.  Two things struck me as peculiar:  first that loving ones country and writing about it is a “conservative” activity (not my belief but apparently his), and that he would joke of his concern that the liberal thought police would find him and give him a beat down for stepping out of line.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;As my mother used to say, “Many a truth is said in jest.”  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier New;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Courier New';"&gt;Obviously my friend had discarded his rose colored glasses long ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Times New Roman;font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 10pt;"&gt;Joseph C.
