Human-induced climate change has far-reaching impacts across the globe. From acidification of the Ocean resulting in decreased organic viability to melting ice-caps producing rising sea levels, anthropogenic climate change has the capacity to alter the global landscape and affect billions of lives in the next century.

Fossil fuel consumption is one of the leading producers of CO2 emissions, however communities have many options to reduce their use of unsustainable energy sources. Some examples include photovoltaic, geothermal, and hydroelectric energy production. Advances in technology have allowed individuals to capitalize on these systems which offer multiple benefits including reduced emissions and energy bills.

From June 2016-September 2016, I conducted a local study in Southern California to determine the impact of household solar lighting. The survey takes into account: the amount of electricity used, number of lights, average usage durations. These factors were used to determine if switching conventional outdoor lights with readily available solar lighting was a potential method of significantly reducing electricity usage.

Based on the survey, the average American household uses between 800 and 900 kilowatt hours each month. With Southern California Edison there are three tiers for energy cost, Tier 1 14.9 cents/kwh, Tier 2 19.3 cents/kwh, Tier 3 27.9 cents/kwh, and Tier 4 31.9 cents/kwh.

On average households have 8 outdoor lights which stay for an average of 5 hours each night. A 21.5 watt, average wattage of 1100 lumen CFL. (1kw hour = 46.5 hours of 21.5 watt light, 1100 lumens) This totals to 0.86 kwh hour per household per night, 25.8 kwh for a whole month, and 309.6 kwh for the whole year.

If residents were to change 8 of their lights to solar they would be saving $8.23 per month (prices taken from tier 4). For a whole year households would be saving $98.79.

Switching to a solar light that is 1100 lumens, the equivalent of the average brightness of a CFL, which is about $60, for eight lights this would cost $480. This would take households 4.86 years to pay off the solar lighting.

If 48 houses per neighborhood switched to solar lighting, the total energy saving would be approximately 14860.8 kwh each year, which is equivalent to $4740.60.

If all 21,576 households, in Brea, California switched to solar lighting, this would be equivalent to 6,679,929.6 kwh and $2,130,897.54 of savings per year.

Based on Carbonify statistics, the energy savings of 6,679,929.6 kwh per year would be equivalent to 5,009.95 metric tons of CO2 per year. This would equal 2,087.48 trees being saved each month and 25,049.74 per year.

Based on my research, I conclude that there is a significant measurable impact on an individual, community, and global level by simply replacing CFL lights with solar lights of the same intensity. This will have a measurable impact in C02 emissions on a global scale. My goal is to convince 15% of households in my neighborhood to replace their outdoor lights with solar lights, which will save an estimated 1,001,989.44 kwh, equivalent to 3,757.46 trees per year.

Media Contact

<!--

Today the D.C. District Court of Appeals is hearing oral arguments on challenges to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan (CPP), and earlier this week the participating states of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) released their annual report tracking the cumulative investments of auction proceeds.

RGGI is the nation’s first multi-state, market-based program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector in nine participating states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Through RGGI, states are allocated tradable allowances equal to 1 short ton of CO2 each, to be distributed either by auction (primarily) or direct allocation to power plants. Proceeds from auctioned allowances are then used by participating states to invest in energy efficiency, clean and renewable energy, direct bill assistance, and greenhouse gas abatement, generating savings in energy, dollars and CO2 emissions.

Why is this so interesting? Because RGGI’s proven success as a market-based program also demonstrates that a mass-based allowance trading program, as allowed for in the CPP, can reduce carbon from the power plant sector, and provide environmental and economic benefit to states at the same time. Further, the RGGI experience demonstrates that the more states focus on energy efficiency as a compliance mechanism, the more benefits inure to residents and businesses.

As of 2014, RGGI has invested $1.37 billion in proceeds to improve the energy future of the region, projecting a return of $4.67 billion in lifetime energy bill savings: that’s a 240 percent return on investment! In addition, these investments are projected to save 76.1 million MMBtu of fossil fuel energy and 20.6 million MWh of electricity during their lifetime, avoiding 15.4 million short tons of CO2 emissions.

We at the Alliance to Save Energy are excited to see energy efficiency playing such a significant role in the success of the RGGI program. The report states that efficiency represents the largest portion of cumulative investments (58 percent) and lifetime energy bill savings (77 percent). This means that for every dollar invested in energy efficiency in the RGGI region, $4.55 is returned to citizens in bill savings. The impact of these energy efficiency investments is real: the $3.62 billion in energy bill savings has directly benefited 960,000 households and 20,800 businesses (read real success stories here). And by the way, it is also expected to avoid 12.9 million short tons of CO2 emissions over its lifetime, positively impacting the lives of more than just those in participating states.

As the D.C. District Court of Appeals hears oral arguments today, the accomplishments of RGGI ring loud and clear showing the power of energy efficiency programs that can fit into a CPP framework. The RGGI approach creates a market that drives long-term investments in energy efficiency and other clean energy resources, by allowing market forces to determine the most cost-effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions in the power sector. As a result, RGGI states have set themselves up with a successful, cost-effective mass-based approach that can be built upon to meet and exceed the goals of CPP, while also providing a proven example for other states. Nice going.

Kelly Speakes-Backman is Senior Vice President of Policy and Research for the Alliance to Save Energy, and former Chair of the RGGI Board of Directors.

<!--

Trump lauds Hindu community's 'fantastic' contributions to US

Washington, Sep 26 (PTI):

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has praised Hindu community's "fantastic" contributions to world civilisation and American culture.

Trump, 70, also confirmed that he would be addressing an Indian-American event in New Jersey next month, the proceeds of which will benefit global victims of Islamic terror.

"The Hindu community has made fantastic contributions to world civilisation and to American culture and we look forward to celebrating our shared values of free enterprise, hard work, family values, and a strong American foreign policy," Trump said in a statement.

He issued a short 24-second video message inviting Indian-Americans to attend the "incredible" event on October 15.

"Hello everyone, it is my pleasure to invite you to a Republican Hindu Coalition rally at the PNC Arts Center in New Jersey. I am very much looking forward to speaking to thousands of Indian-Americans and others about making America great again. I look forward to seeing everybody there. It would be an incredible evening," Trump said in his video message.

According to the Trump Campaign, the all-day event brings together top actors, dancers, and singers from Bollywood, Hindu spiritual and civic leaders for a celebration of Hindu culture and heritage.

"The proceeds of the event will benefit global victims of Islamic terror," the campaign said, adding that the event christened 'Humanity United Against Terror' has been organised by Republican Hindu Coalition, which is founded and headed by Indian American Shalli Kumar from Illinois.

"I am looking forward to joining my good friend Shalli Kumar, founder and chairman of the Republican Hindu Coalition for this terrific event," Trump said in an accompanying statement issued by his campaign.

Kumar, who on Sunday was appointed by Trump to his advisory committee for people from Asia Pacific region, said he expects some 10,000 people to turn out for the event.

This is for the first time in the last two presidential elections that a presidential has confirmed to attend a public Indian American event.

Trump's decision is seen as an attempt to woo the small but powerful Indian-American community who can play a key role in some of the battle ground States like Virginia if the race is close.

Washington, Sep 26 (PTI): Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, has held and attended a series of fund raisers organised by Indian Americans across the country including at their homes. But those are all closed door events away from public glare.

Clinton, 68, often called as Senator from Punjab and has a large following among the Indian-Americans is yet to make any public appearance before the community.

But she has appointed a large number of Indian-Americans in her campaign team.A recent Pew Survey had said that Indian-Americans overwhelmingly vote for Democrats"

A daily collection of verses from the Vedas, Hinduism's revealed scripture

Vedic Verses for 9/26/16

The Moon was born from his mind; the Sun came into being from his eye; from his mouth came Indra and Agni, while from his breath the Wind was born.

Rig Veda X, 90, 13

From his navel issued the Air; from his head unfurled the Sky, the Earth from his feet, from his ear the four directions. Thus have the worlds been organized.

Rig Veda X, 90, 14

Seven were the sticks of the enclosure, thrice seven the fuel sticks were made, when the Gods, performing the sacrifice, bound the Man as the victim.

Rig Veda X, 90, 15

The soul is born and unfolds in a body, with dreams and desires and the food of life. And then it is reborn in new bodies, in accordance with its former works. The quality of the soul determines its future body; earthy or airy, heavy or light.

Krishna Yajur Veda, Svetasvatara Upanishad, 5.11-12. upm, p. 94

Mind is indeed the source of bondage and also the source of liberation. To be bound to things of this world-this is bondage. To be free from them-this is liberation.

Krishna Yajur Veda, Maitra Upanishad 6.34. upm, p. 104"

Piling e-waste turning city toxic

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: Throwing out your old computer in a garbage dump may lead to mercury poisoning and a possible brain stroke. Confused? Experts on e-waste (electronic waste) management warned Hyderabadis against the hazards of not disposing e-waste properly and going by their claims, the city could have its very own Erin Brockovich story if immediate steps are not taken.
In fact, some say the city is at the top spot when it comes to illegally converting PC monitors into television sets especially during lucrative periods like the ongoing IPL season, and later dumping them in water bodies.
Around 50,000 such converted television sets are manufactured here and sent to other cities as well.
“There are very few authorised recyclers of e-waste in Andhra Pradesh whereas there is no dearth of unauthorised dealers,” said Jagadish Kumar Yadav, director of marketing at Tech Logic Ewaste Recyclers, a company based in Bangalore, which collects electronic garbage from several cities, including Hyderabad.
“These unauthorised dealers indulge in activities such as converting monitors to TV’s and reselling other appliances too at lower prices. During the IPL season, at least 50,000 such TVs are sold to bookies, pubs and hotels in various cities who later simply dispose them in nearby water bodies or open areas, leading to contamination,” he added.
Experts said chemicals inside electronic appliances, especially mobile phones, laptops and desktops, such as lead and mercury, could seep through the ground and contaminate the ground water. Although the process takes long, it would eventually result in serious ailments, including brain stroke and cancer, among those exposed.
“Being an IT hub, Hyderabad generates almost just as much e-waste as Bangalore. But the amount collected for recycling by authorised dealers is less than half of that of Bangalore’s,” said G M Adil, general manager at Global Ewaste Management Solutions (GEMS) which has earmarked the city as a collection point.
Officials from the company revealed that while the amount of e-waste collected from Hyderabad is around 1,000 kg per month, the figure in Bangalore is closer to 3,000 kg. The total amount collected annually from here is around only 15% of what is collected in Chennai, they added.
“There is a need to spread awareness about proper disposal and recycling of e-waste here,” said Mohammed Ibrahim Aamir Khan, vice president of GEMS, Hyderabad.
“Unauthorised dealers pay around Rs 15 more per kg of waste compared to us, so residents choose to sell old appliances to scrap dealers. We are trying to change that by placing e-waste bins in several public places and holding workshops in companies, schools and colleges,” he said.

LED chip and parts maker Cree has launched a line of low cost LED
bulbs that will be sold at Home Depot, and one even retails for under
$10. Some of the cheapest LED bulbs out there sell for $20, and Cree
calls its new ultra cheap LED line “the biggest thing since the light
bulb” (and it trademarked that phrase, too).
Cree
makes the bulk of its revenue from of selling LED chips and components
to other LED bulb and lighting makers. The company is profitable and
doing well.
On Tuesday Cree also announced a better-than-expected earnings, raising its guidance for its fiscal third quarter, and reported better than expected profit and revenue for the current quarter. Cree earned $20.4 million on revenue of $346.3 million for the most recent quarter. Along with those strong earnings Cree saw its shares jump 12.5 percent in morning trading (as much as 19 percent earlier this morning).
Cree is selling three new LED bulbs: 1). a 40-watt, warm white
replacement for $9.97, 2). a 60-watt, warm white replacement for $12.97,
and 3). a 60-watt day light for $13.97. Cree says the bulbs save 84
percent of the energy that would be used by comparable incandescent
bulbs, last 25 times longer, and come with a 10-year warranty.
As we explained in our research report for GigaOM Pro
(subscription required), the LED market has hit a turning point,
particularly for commercial and industrial building owners who are
installing LEDs because it makes financial sense. Check out our report on LEDs (digest here), written by Ucilia Wang, and here’s our podcast discussion about the report.
It’s been a harder sell to get consumers to buy LEDs, but with new
cheap products like this line from Cree that will slowly change. Still,
consumers expect super cheap bulbs — compact fluorescents can sell for a
buck or two, and incandescents for well under a $1.
Other companies that sell low cost consumer LEDs include GE (which bought LED startup Albeo last year), Philips and Lemnis Lighting,
which introduced a bulb last year for under $5. Worldwide sales of LEDs
rose 2.1 percent to $13.7 billion in 2012 from $11.3 billion in 2011,
and will grow to $16.4 billion by 2017, according to Strategies
Unlimited.

Dear Bhujangadev,
Together, right now, we can shape Earth Day 2030. Through recommendations of the Alliance Commission
on National Energy Efficiency Policy, we’ve laid out the
plan of doubling U.S. energy productivity by 2030; we
are executing it right now, working with
our government and business leaders to achieve the goal of
reducing wasted energy and boosting energy productivity.
But we need your
support today.
With your help, we can push for the implementation of Energy2030 right now, and by Earth Day 2030 we will have decreased U.S. CO2
emissions to 4 billion metric tons. That
is 33% less than 2005. Being energy
productive means a cleaner environment.
Join us today as we celebrate Earth
Day 2013 so that every year we can take the much needed steps toward a cleaner,
healthier environment due to more energy efficient programs and policies.
The Alliance to Save Energy staff and supporters are on the
ground in Washington and around the country drumming up support to protect and
push for more energy efficient legislation, but we can't keep up our efforts
without the help of friends like you. Please
donate now to support our work and continue the fight for a cleaner planet.
Thank you for creating a positive change for our
environment by supporting energy efficiency.
Sincerely,

Where you stand in a lift is clue to your social standing

Melbourne: People decide where they stand in an elevator based on a micro social hierarchy, established within seconds of entering the lift, a new study has claimed.
The study by Australian researcher Rebekah Rousi found that in an elevator older men tend to stand at the back while younger men stand in front of them. Women of all ages keep to the front. While men stare at the floor, monitor or mirrors, women look at the monitor and all eye contact is avoided, news.com.au reported. Rousi conducted an ethnographic study of elevator behaviour in two of the tallest office buildings in Adelaide.
She took a total of 30 lift rides in the two buildings, and discovered there was an established order to where people tended to stand, News Limited Network reported. In a blog for Ethnography Matters, she wrote that more senior men seemed to direct themselves towards the back of the lift cabins. “In front of them were younger men, and in front of them were women of all ages,” she wrote.
She also noticed that there was a difference in where people looked half way through the ride. “Men watched the monitors, looked in the side mirrors (in one building) to see themselves, and in the door mirrors (of the other building) to also watch others. “Women would watch the monitors and avoid eye contact with other users (unless in conversation) and the mirrors,” Rousi wrote. Renewable energy body yet to be solar powered

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stressed on the need for increasing the country’s renewable energy efficiency, the state organization involved in promoting this very cause is doing precious little to propagate clean safe energy and is, in fact, hit by regular power cuts.
The New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) which has its office in Nampally has not installed any solar power gadget so far.
Most of its 50 plus employees said solar equipment is stored away at their office without being put to any usage, and they are dependent on outside sources for power supply.
Frequent power cuts bring the entire office work to a halt. Surprisingly, the office has been experiencing hours of power cuts every summer, but the officials concerned have never thought of tapping solar energy.
“Whenever there is a power cut, it is a break time” quipped an employee “There are no back-ups like generators or invertors. To let in some sunlight, we open our windows or if it becomes too hot we take a stroll outside.”
“The computers have UPS facility and work for less than an hour whenever there is a power cut. In case of long hours of power cuts we do not have any option but to while away our time,” said another.
NREDCAP offers 30% subsidy to citizens who want to install a roof-top photo voltaic system which costs 2.4 lakhs per 1 KW.
Similar subsidies are also offered on solar heaters, lanterns and other such devices. The body is also responsible for giving permission to wind energy and biomass energy plants.
“We spend thousands of rupees every month on electricity. Installing roof-top solar panels would decrease our power bill by 20%–30% and ensure uninterrupted power supply for a couple of hours,” said an official. “Ideally, we are supposed to inspire the citizens by going completely solar. But, for various reasons we have not been able to do that and we only focusing on promoting it,” official added.
When quizzed on the issue, the higher officials of the NREDCAP said they were planning to install 5 KW solar roof-top panels for electricity soon. “This is our rented accommodation and that is why we had reservations about installing solar power devices till date. But we will be doing it soon,” said M Kamalakar Babu, vice-chairman and managing director, NREDCAP.(Times of India)

Lighting
consumes 46 percent of U.S. energy in commercial businesses. And energy
costs are rising. Fluorescent technology is being phased out. CFL
technology has environmentally harmful side effects. Many believe that
LED (light-emitting diode) technology is the answer. Considered
efficiency powerhouses because of their high luminous efficiency, LED
bulbs have quickly become the standard for commercial, residential, and
industrial applications.
Look at any list of lighting
manufacturers, and you’ll see that the majority of today’s LED solutions
are not produced in America. And for the first five years of doing
business, that was true for NEUTEX Advanced Energy Group (dba
NEUTEX Lighting) as well. Headquartered in Houston, TX, NEUTEX has
become one of a list of companies that have recently moved operations to
the U.S. from overseas. Today, the company is developing its Houston
presence as it positions itself as a leading manufacturer of LED
lighting.
“You really need to think outside the box to make things
happen,” says John Higgins, president and CEO of NEUTEX, “and we’re
firm believers in the LED business.”
Building A Middle Class
It
was a typical quality control check at the company’s Shanghai facility
that led Higgins to notice a new store was being built nearby. After
learning it was a typical middle class American store – “not a Wal-Mart
and not a Louis Vuitton,” says Higgins – he and colleagues began to
wonder if costs were starting to go up to the point that they were
helping to develop the middle class of China. Upon further inspection,
they realized that “we had five people doing the job of one in the
states,” says Higgins. And all of the work in that China factory was
done by hand—no automation, which affected both the production output
and quality.
“We had quality control issues,” Higgins says, and
he adds that the language barrier made “actually trying to get things
done” difficult. “We found ourselves traveling ten times more than we
should have to travel than if we were doing it in-house.” Manufacturing
anything abroad, he says, is difficult because he lost the ability to
walk to the production floor and “see what’s going on” – whether the
wrong color LED is being put in or something else is being done
incorrectly on the assembly line. The company had also noticed that when
NEUTEX management would go to visit their factories, production would
go up. “We’d leave, production would go down,” Higgins says. Another
long distance cost of manufacturing abroad, says Higgins, is paid by the
four employees who are in the office at 2:00 a.m. in order to
communicate with the facilities in a different time zone. “Those trends,
no matter how small you think they are, over time they start to cost
you a lot of money,” he says.

                    Dear Bhujangadev,
The change in weather is a great reminder of how being energy
efficient – doing more with less energy – benefits you, our country, and
especially the world we live in.
With Earth Day just a few days away, we hope that all of our friends will take the pledge to be energy efficient on our Facebook page.
If we all pledge to take small steps, like changing out our wasteful
light bulbs, together we can reduce domestic carbon pollution to the
equivalent of removing 14 million cars from our roads each year. We can
have a cleaner, healthier earth, every day and every year, simply by
being energy efficient.
And what better occasion than Earth Day for us all to take this simple pledge to be energy efficient and post it on the Alliance’s Facebook page.
You can create your own pledge or use one of the three examples below, but in either case, please add the hash tag #AllianceEarthDay2013 at the end.

I pledge to replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient
halogens, CFLs, and/or LEDs that save 25% – 75% or more over the
old-style bulbs.

I pledge to take energy efficient actions each day, such as washing
my clothes in cold water and making sure the tires on my car are
properly inflated.

I pledge to purchase ENERGY STAR appliances that can save up to 30% on electricity bills.

Better lighting options, washing your clothes in cold water, using
ENERGY STAR appliances, and keeping the tires on your car properly
inflated, are just a few of the simple ways we can take care of our
planet. Take the pledge today and get started on making a difference!
Thank you for taking the time to make Earth Day 2013 a cleaner, healthier one.
Sincerely,
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: With a view to promote solar power as a way out to ease the power crisis, the state government has decided to install solar panels on rooftops and parking lots in D and H Blocks of the state Secretariat on a pilot basis. Plans are afoot to extend the installation of solar panels to other government buildings in a phased manner.
About 270 KW of solar power can be tapped from 4000 square meters space available in D Block and about 90 KW power from 1300 square meters space available in H Block. During working hours, the solar power can be utilized directly and beyond office hours the solar power generated will be sent to the grid through the net metering arrangement.
At a meeting held here on Thursday, chief secretary Minnie Mathew stressed the need to install solar panels in the Secretariat so that the government departments can become a model to the others and instructed the concerned officials to come up with a proposal to tap the solar power.
During the meeting, the APTransco officials explained to the chief secretary, the functioning of the solar panel system already existing on the terrace of Vidyut Soudha in Khairatabad, which is saving about 90,000 units of energy per annum and bringing about a saving of about Rs 5.40 lakh per annum.(Times of India)

Raj Bhavan taps solar power for its energy needs

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: Setting an example on utilizing non-conventional energy, Raj Bhavan has been tapping solar energy for its lighting requirements. The AP Raj Bhavan is the third in the country after Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat to initiate solar energy utilisation for the governor bunglows (Raj Bhavans).
Raj Bhavan had installed solar power packs of 41.05 units (KWp) capacity atop various blocks in March 2012 to cater to the power needs of lighting load requirements at the premises. Solar energy has been taking care of power needs of nearly 70% of buildings on Raj Bhavan premises, while the conventional energy is being used in buildings like the Durbar Hall, as the heritage building has a weak
roof. Apart from the lighting needs at the different buildings, streetlighting in Raj
Bhavan was being replaced with induction lights and solar lights with green lighting system. Raj Bhavan officials said the installed solar system generates 190 units per day. The Raj Bhavan, on an average, consumes nearly 150 units per day, which works out to 4,500 units per month.
Considering the new tariff, as it comes under the slab of about Rs seven per unit under the conventional system, the monthly saving works out to about Rs 33,750 per month and Rs four lakh per annum.
“The solar lighting was installed at a cost of Rs 96 lakh funded under the Special Area Demonstration Project scheme in April 2011project,” N Ramesh Kumar, principal secretary to the governor, told reporters on Thursday.
Apart from the solar energy, the Raj Bhavan has also taken up water harvesting in a big way. Ten water harvesting pits were dug up at different locations on the sprawling Raj Bhavan to arrest flow of storm water. Until the pits were provided, the storm water used to drift towards the road, inundating the main road up to the rail track at Makta as the Raj Bhavan is located at an elevated position. Now, the problem has been solved, the officials said.
“The governor believes it is the bounden duty of all citizens to conserve water and tap solar energy,” the principal secretary said.

UoH opts for solar power to cut costs

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD TO O FOR SOLAR POWER
Hyderabad: Hit hard by regular power cuts and steep electricity bills, authorities at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) have decided to opt for solar power to tide over an impending crisis. As a start, it has set up a solar plant that will power the Indira Gandhi Memorial Library, one of the largest libraries in the country. Authorities said they would extend the facility to other buildings as well.
Inaugurating the first solar plant on campus on Sunday, vice-chancellor Ramakrishna Ramaswamy said the varsity is planning to set up a 9 MW power farm in a phased manner in order to reduce expenses towards power charges. “The unusable area near high tension power lines will be utilised to set up a 9 MW capacity solar power farm,” he said.
Authorities would need to spend around Rs 6.6 crore to set up a power plant generating 1 MW, but in the long run, the shift to solar power would drastically reduce monthly electric charges of Rs 1 crore, officials said.
The vice-chancellor said that the first plant was set up for the library as the building requires power round the clock and most students use the air-conditioned reading halls till late at night. Frequent power cuts had become a hindrance, especially during the summer. “The library consumes about 600 units of power per day, costing the university Rs 1 lakh per month towards power charges. The solar plant provides uninterrupted and stable power of 500 units per day and the whole system will last for a minimum period of 25 years,” he said.
UoH, which has around 5,000 students on campus, utilises 13 lakh units of electricity per month to run its hostels, academic buildings and other residential buildings. Further, the university also runs many generators and UPS systems as back-up for power supply to overcome the frequent power cuts in its laboratories and academic buildings.
The new solar power plant is one among the many developmental measures taken up on the campus recently. Authorities had earlier taken part in energy conservation and nature support measures, including setting up of a solid waste management plant on campus.(tIMES OF iNDIA)

Many states had adopted legislative and regulatory policies mandating the treatment of energy efficiency as a resource for utility investment on par with, or ahead of, traditional supply-side investments. As a result, utility investments in energy efficiency were large and growing rapidly with utility and third-party programs mobilizing hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars to invest in efficiency programs annually. These efforts included mail-in rebates for CFLs to lower their cost and attract the attention of reluctant consumers. While the programs helped drive increased CFL purchases, the administrative cost of these retail-level efforts was relatively high, making it difficult to scale up to a much larger endeavor."

This is great news for the consumers because manufacturers are now making better bulbs that use less energy, which saves you money on your elctricity bill. Did you know that upgrading just 15 incandescent bulbs in our home could save us $50 per year? Another benefit of the new bulbs is that you do not have to change them as often because they have longer life spans."
