Using Analytics to be Predictive and Proactive

Organizations today need to get ahead of events so they can adjust decisions about resources, personnel, up-sell and cross-sell offers, fraud and abuse detection, and more in dynamic fashion. Analytics can play a key role in bringing predictive insights to executives and managers. With these insights coupled with continuous, real-time data views from business and operational intelligence systems, organizations can be “proactive”—that is, they can do more than just react after the fact to events and market changes, and instead shape their own destiny.

Data Visualization and Discovery for Better Business Decisions

Data visualization and visual data discovery can enable diverse types of users—from data scientists working with big data to nontechnical business managers and frontline users—to see significant trends and patterns in data that they would have struggled to see in voluminous tabular reports and spreadsheets. As big data volumes grow and organizations seek to integrate diverse and complex information, users’ ability to comprehend information quickly and put it to productive use hinges on data visualization.

The Platform Strikes Back: The Advantages of a Single Comprehensive Analytics Solution

Business intelligence (BI) has blossomed into solutions of all shapes and sizes, to suit different business needs and budgets. Despite this, prior research by the Aberdeen group has found that organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to get the right information to the right people at the right time. For example, Aberdeen's February 2012 research into operational BI found that 65 percent of business managers have less time than ever before to make decisions after business events occur. This Analyst Insight, drawn from two Aberdeen data sets, examines organizations that use a single comprehensive solution to meet all of their BI needs. The research finds that they get more leverage out of their scarce IT resources and are more likely to get information into the hands of the managers in a timely way.

Getting the “Business” into Business-Oriented Data Modeling: Practical Techniques and Examples

Data modeling is often seen as a technical discipline used only by data professionals for database design. In fact, it is often seen as the same as database design. However, with the right perspective, techniques, and tools, data models have also proven useful to nontechnical stakeholders. Business leaders and subject matter experts find that well‐structured conceptual models provide a new way to see and understand their business and make business policy decisions. Business analysts use data models to discover requirements that would otherwise be missed entirely or not discovered until much later.

Faster Analytics and Better Business Intelligence

Today’s business and analytics users place high value on timeliness. Reaching decisions quickly—at the speed of thought—depends on two factors: the response speed of the data exploration tooling and the delivery speed of data into the exploration environment. Modern tools deliver these features through in-memory operation on locally stored data and direct access to operational data, respectively. The result is faster turnaround time of decisions based on more timely information.

Moving Beyond the Basics: Key Considerations for Successful Adoption of a Mobile Platform

Organizations worldwide have come to rely on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks, and laptops to conduct their daily business activities. The new generation of employees, workers, and consumers now uses mobile devices to communicate and interpret data to make decisions, interact with corporate business applications, and share both sensitive and non-sensitive information through wireless media. This increase in mobile usage has accelerated development of mobile hardware and software technologies. The emergence of a wide variety of mobile services and applications has prompted device cost reduction, while the fast pace of evolution has led to an increase and enhancement in mobile device capabilities. As a result, many organizations have adopted strategies that allow employees to connect to the company’s network to conduct their business activities while accessing personal data and apps.

Ten Mistakes to Avoid In Data Resource Management

By Dave Wells

Data is an essential business resource that is as critical to business success as financial and human resources are. The disciplines of data resource management include strategy, architecture, and governance. Mistakes to avoid in data resource management span all three disciplines.

Balancing Governance and Business Agility through Streamlined Information Integration

Conventional wisdom suggests that a centralized function for managing access to data provides economies of scale while providing trustworthy oversight of the quality and usability of that data. In today’s world, there is a need to allow the business to be agile, with increased business control of information enabling greater freedom in analysis. The increasing need of business users for speed and agility also requires a higher degree of speed and agility in IT that can be achieved by automating trivial tasks.

The Role of Data Quality in a Big Data Environment

“Big data” relies on consumption of massive volumes and varieties of data marked by inconsistencies across different sources, questionable lineage, and uncertain data currency. Integrating unstructured and structured data sets implies that small variances in semantics, concept tagging, and terminology will have adverse impacts on consumers of business analytics.

Product Lifecycle Management and the Data Deluge: Transforming Data to Enhance Performance

“Big data” is data so large it can’t be effectively or affordably managed or exploited using conventional data management systems. Big data management systems were born of the Internet, where big data volumes collided with a host of seemingly impossible constraints:
-- Massive and impossible-to-predict traffic
-- A 99.999 percent availability rate
-- Sub-second responsiveness
-- Sub-penny per-session costs
-- Two-month innovation road maps
