PayPal, the online money transfer company, has accidentally credited a man in Delaware a whopping USD 92,233,720,368,547,800, making him by far the richest man in the world.

Chris Reynolds said he was shocked when he received his monthly statement via email from PayPal last week, with an ending balance of USD 92 quadrillion, over a million times richer than the world’s richest man, Carlos Slim.

“I’m just feeling like a million bucks,” Mr. Reynolds was quoted as saying by thePhiladelphia Daily News. “At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise.”

After absorbing the initial shock, Mr. Reynolds logged on to PayPal’s site and saw that his balance was listed there as USD 0.

If the prodigious account credit were true, Reynolds said he would pay down debts with the money.

“I’m a very responsible guy,” he said. “I would pay the national debt down first.”

PayPal has admitted the error and offered to donate an unspecified amount of money to a cause of Mr. Reynolds’ choice.

“This is obviously an error and we appreciate that Mr. Reynolds understood this was the case,” CNNquoted PayPal as saying in a statement.

Modifying Our First Java Program

This section continues our introduction to Java programming with two examples that modify the example in Fig. to print text on one line by using multiple statements and to print text on several lines by using a single statement.

Displaying a Single Line of Text with Multiple Statements

Welcome to Java Programming! can be displayed several ways. Class Welcome2, shown in Fig., uses two statements to produce the same output as that shown in Fig.. From this point forward, we highlight the new and key features in each code listing, as shown in lines 910 of this program.

Unlike println, after displaying its argument, print does not position the output cursor at the beginning of the next line in the command windowthe next character the program displays will appear immediately after the last character that print displays. Thus, line 10 positions the first character in its argument (the letter "J") immediately after the last character that line 9 displays (the space character before the string's closing double-quote character). Each print or println statement resumes displaying characters from where the last print or println statement stopped displaying characters.

Displaying Multiple Lines of Text with a Single Statement

A single statement can display multiple lines by using newline characters, which indicate to System.out's print and println methods when they should position the output cursor at the beginning of the next line in the command window. Like blank lines, space characters and tab characters, newline characters are white-space characters. Fig. outputs four lines of text, using newline characters to determine when to begin each new line.

Note, however, that the two characters \ and n (repeated three times in the statement) do not appear on the screen. The backslash(\) is called an escape character. It indicates to System.out's print and println methods that a "special character" is to be output. When a backslash appears in a string of characters, Java combines the next character with the backslash to form an escape sequence. The escape sequence \n represents the newline character. When a new-line character appears in a string being output with System.out, the newline character causes the screen's output cursor to move to the beginning of the next line in the command window. Figure . lists several common escape sequences and describes how they affect the display of characters in the command window.

First Program in Java: Printing a Line of Text :-

Every time you use a computer, you execute various applications that perform tasks for you. For example, your e-mail application helps you send and receive e-mail, and your Web browser lets you view Web pages from Web sites around the world. Computer programmers create such applications by writing computer programs.

A Java application is a computer program that executes when you use the java command to launch the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Let us consider a simple application that displays a line of text. (Later in this section we will discuss how to compile and run an application.) The program and its output are shown in Fig. The output appears in the light blue box at the end of the program. The program illustrates several important Java language features. Java uses notations that may look strange to nonprogrammers. In addition, for your convenience, each program we present in this Tutorials includes line numbers, which are not part of actual Java programs. We will soon see that line 9 does the real work of the program namely, displaying the phrase Welcome to Java Programming! on the screen. We now consider each line of the program in order.

begins with //, indicating that the remainder of the line is a comment. Programmers insert comments to document programs and improve their readability. This helps other people to read and understand programs. The Java compiler ignores comments, so they do not cause the computer to perform any action when the program is run. We begin every program with a comment indicating the figure number and file name.

A comment that begins with // is called an end-of-line (or single-line) comment, because the comment terminates at the end of the line on which it appears. A // comment also can begin in the middle of a line and continue until the end of that line (as in lines 11 and 13).

Traditional comments (also called multiple-line comments), such as

     /* This is a traditional
        comment. It can be
        split over many lines */

can be spread over several lines . This type of comment begins with the delimiter /* and ends with */. All text between the delimiters is ignored by the compiler. Java incorporated traditional comments and end-of-line comments from the C and C++ programming languages, respectively.

Common Programming Error

Forgetting one of the delimiters of a traditional or Javadoc comment is a syntax error. The syntax of a programming language specifies the rules for creating a proper program in that language. A syntax error occurs when the compiler encounters code that violates Java's language rules (i.e., its syntax). In this case, the compiler does not produce a .class file. Instead, the compiler issues an error message to help the programmer identify and fix the incorrect code. Syntax errors are also called compiler errors, compile-time errors or compilation errors, because the compiler detects them during the compilation phase. You will be unable to execute your program until you correct all the syntax errors in it.

begins a class declaration for class Welcome1. Every program in Java consists of at least one class declaration that is defined by you the programmer. These are known as programmer-defined classes or user-defined classes. The class keyword introduces a class declaration in Java and is immediately followed by the class name (Welcome1). Keywords (sometimes called reserved words) are reserved for use by Java (we discuss the various keywords throughout the text) and are always spelled with all lowercase letters.

By convention, all class names in Java begin with a capital letter and capitalize the first letter of each word they include (e.g., SampleClassName). A Java class name is an identifiera series of characters consisting of letters, digits, underscores (_) and dollar signs ($) that does not begin with a digit and does not contain spaces. Some valid identifiers are Welcome1, $value, _value, m_inputField1 and button7. The name 7button is not a valid identifier because it begins with a digit, and the name input field is not a valid identifier because it contains a space. Normally, an identifier that does not begin with a capital letter is not the name of a Java class. Java is case sensitivethat is, uppercase and lowercase letters are distinct, so a1 and A1 are different (but both valid) identifiers.

By convention, always begin a class name's identifier with a capital letter and start each subsequent word in the identifier with a capital letter. Java programmers know that such identifiers normally represent Java classes, so naming your classes in this manner makes your programs more readable.

Java is case sensitive. Not using the proper uppercase and lowercase letters for an identifier normally causes a compilation error.

every class we define begins with the public keyword. For now, we will simply require this keyword. When you save your public class declaration in a file, the file name must be the class name followed by the ".java" file-name extension. For our application, the file name is Welcome1.java.

It is an error for a public class to have a file name that is not identical to the class name (plus the .java extension) in terms of both spelling and capitalization.

is the starting point of every Java application. The parentheses after the identifier main indicate that it is a program building block called a method. Java class declarations normally contain one or more methods. For a Java application, exactly one of the methods must be called main and must be defined as shown on line 7; otherwise, the JVM will not execute the application. Methods are able to perform tasks and return information when they complete their tasks. Keyword void indicates that this method will perform a task but will not return any information when it completes its task. The left brace, {, on line 8 begins the body of the method declaration. A corresponding right brace, }, must end the method declaration's body (line 11 of the program). Note that line 9 in the body of the method is indented between the braces.

     System.out.println( "Welcome to Java Programming!" );

instructs the computer to perform an actionnamely, to print the string of characters contained between the double quotation marks. A string is sometimes called a character string, a message or a string literal. We refer to characters between double quotation marks simply as strings. White-space characters in strings are not ignored by the compiler.

System.out is known as the standard output object.System.out allows Java applications to display sets of characters in the command window from which the Java application executes. In Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, the command window is the MS-DOS prompt. In Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP, the command window is the Command Prompt. In UNIX/Linux/Mac OS X, the command window is called a terminal window or a shell. Many programmers refer to the command window simply as the command line.

Method System.out.println displays (or prints) a line of text in the command window. The string in the parentheses on line 9 is the argument to the method. Method System.out.println performs its task by displaying (also called outputting) its argument in the command window. When System.out.println completes its task, it positions the output cursor (the location where the next character will be displayed) to the beginning of the next line in the command window. (This move of the cursor is similar to when a user presses the Enter key while typing in a text editorthe cursor appears at the beginning of the next line in the file.)

The entire line 9, including System.out.println, the argument "Welcome to Java Programming!" in the parentheses and the semicolon (;), is called a statement. Each statement ends with a semicolon. When the statement on line 9 of our program executes, it displays the message Welcome to Java Programming! in the command window. As we will see in subsequent programs, a method is typically composed of one or more statements that perform the method's task.

Omitting the semicolon at the end of a statement is a syntax error.

Error-Prevention Tip

When learning how to program, sometimes it is helpful to "break" a working program so you can familiarize yourself with the compiler's syntax-error messages. These messages do not always state the exact problem in the code. When you encounter such syntax-error messages in the future, you will have an idea of what caused the error. Try removing a semicolon or brace from the program of Fig., then recompile the program to see the error messages generated by the omission.

Error-Prevention Tip

When the compiler reports a syntax error, the error may not be on the line number indicated by the error message. First, check the line for which the error was reported. If that line does not contain syntax errors, check several preceding lines.

Some programmers find it difficult when reading or writing a program to match the left and right braces ({ and }) that delimit the body of a class declaration or a method declaration. For this reason, some programmers include an end-of-line comment after a closing right brace (}) that ends a method declaration and after a closing right brace that ends a class declaration. For example, line 11

specifies the closing right brace (}) of method main, and line 13

     } // end class Welcome1

specifies the closing right brace (}) of class Welcome1. Each comment indicates the method or class that the right brace terminates.

Compiling and Executing Your First Java Application

We are now ready to compile and execute our program. For this purpose, we assume you are using the Sun Microsystems' J2SE Development Kit. On the Downloads page at our Web site (www.deitel.com), we provide Deitel^® Dive Into™ Series publications to help you begin using several popular Java development tools.

To prepare to compile the program, open a command window and change to the directory where the program is stored. Most operating systems use the command cd to change directories. For example,

     cd c:\examples\ch02\fig02_01

changes to the fig02_01 directory on Windows. The command

     cd ~/examples/ch02/fig02_01

changes to the fig02_01 directory on UNIX/Linux/Max OS X.

To compile the program, type

     javac Welcome1.java

If the program contains no syntax errors, the preceding command creates a new file called Welcome1.class (known as the class file for Welcome1) containing the Java bytecodes that represent our application. When we use the java command to execute the application, these bytecodes will be executed by the JVM.

Error-Prevention Tip

When attempting to compile a program, if you receive a message such as "bad command or filename," "javac: command not found" or "'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file," then your Java software installation was not completed properly. If you are using the J2SE Development Kit, this indicates that the system's PATH environment variable was not set properly. Please review the J2SE Development Kit installation instructions at java.sun.com/j2se/5.0/install.html carefully. On some systems, after correcting the PATH, you may need to reboot your computer or open a new command window for these settings to take effect.

Error-Prevention Tip

The Java compiler generates syntax-error messages when the syntax of a program is incorrect. Each error message contains the file name and line number where the error occurred. For example, Welcome1.java:6 indicates that an error occurred in the file Welcome1.java at line 6. The remainder of the error message provides information about the syntax error.

The compiler error message "Public class ClassName must be defined in a file called ClassName.java" indicates that the file name does not exactly match the name of the public class in the file or that you typed the class name incorrectly when compiling the class.

To execute the program, type java Welcome1. This launches the JVM, which loads the ".class" file for class Welcome1. Note that the ".class" filename extension is omitted from the preceding command; otherwise, the JVM will not execute the program. The JVM calls method main. Next, the statement at line 9 of main displays "Welcome to Java Programming!"

Error-Prevention Tip

When attempting to run a Java program, if you receive a message such as "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Welcome1," your CLASSPATH environment variable has not been set properly. Transform your PC into a mean, media-streaming machine

f you’re anything like me, you’ve built an impressive media empire inside your PC. You’ve compiled album after album of sweet jams. You’ve got reams of cherished photos from all your adventures, and your video collection spans everything from smartphone gag reels to family movies to high-resolution videos ripped from your DVD collection.

Problem is, they are all trapped in your PC. What if you want to watch one of your videos on the big, beautiful HDTV in your living room, or listen to your complete music collection on a storage-strapped smartphone?

The solution is simple: Turn your PC into a media slinger, a machine that can stream your music, movies, and photos wherever you want them to go. It’s easier than you might think, though the tricky part is deciding just which server solution you want to use—and how much you want to spend.

Pick the right PC for the job

The first step is to make sure your computer is up to the task. Server software can place a heavy load on your PC, especially when it first indexes your media library—but also when it’s actively streaming. What’s more, you’ll need to leave your PC running 24/7 if you want your media library to be available around the clock.

You can configure any PC to sling media over the Web, but it’s best to set up a dedicated machine that can run 24/7 in a closet or basement. If it’s housed in an eyesore of a case that looks best in the dark, so much the better!

Indeed, many users elect to repurpose an older system as a dedicated media server: one that can sit quietly out of the way in a closet or basement until called upon to sling. If you can afford to devote an entire PC to media slinging, it won’t matter as much whether it’s a screaming powerhouse of a system, because it can devote all its resources to server duty.

The software we’re going to explore today won’t place a huge demand on your PC, but to be on the safe side, you should probably use a PC that’s running Windows 7 or later, with at least 4GB of RAM, and a discrete video card to ensure smooth rendering while you’re streaming movies. Optimizing Windows 8 to run on an older machine is probably the best way to go, but there are also a few decent free tweaks you can make to improve performance on Windows 7.

Choose the software that meets your needs

To start slinging, you’ll need some reliable media server software. This will dictate not only what media you can share, but where you can share it.

For example, Pogoplug PC is a fairly straightforward Windows utility that makes your media available on your mobile devices, other PCs, and pretty much anything with a Web browser. Just choose the folders you want to share, and then sign into your account via one of Pogoplug’s free companion apps (available for Android and iOS) or any browser. From there you can open an individual photo, watch a slideshow, stream a video, or listen to music.

Set up Pogoplug on your PC, and you can use the free Android and iOS apps to access your media library from anywhere.

You’re not limited to media, either. The software can “stream” files as well, handy if you need mobile access to, say, some Microsoft Office documents while you’re traveling for work. There’s an integrated preview feature that supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and other popular formats.

Pogoplug also allows you to share items with friends and family members, generating links others can use to view your content. Plus, you can download files if you’re working at another PC and need to pop into your home server for some documents or music.

The full version of Pogoplug PC will cost you $29.95. The price includes 5GB of cloud storage that you can use to store items you want to access even if your computer is offline.

If you want the added option of streaming your media to your TV, consider PlayOn. This media-streaming service turns your PC into something akin to a Roku box, giving you access to channels such as ABC, Food Network, Hulu, Netflix, and TBS. But it can also stream your personal media libraries (though not your documents, sadly).

The simple PlayOn interface isn’t much to look at, but it makes sharing your PC’s media folders with smartphones, set-top boxes, and other devices a cinch.

What’s more, PlayOn works with a huge range of devices, including most game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and set-top boxes (including Google TV and Roku). It also supports DLNA, a relatively new media-streaming standard designed to make home streaming simpler. Plenty of new smart HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and the like support DLNA streaming, so chances are you probably have a DLNA-certified device in your home. If you want to see your media on your HDTV, PlayOn’s probably got you covered.

The service and software cost $39.99 per year (though you can often find it on sale for less—it’s currently $24.99 as part of a spring sale). However, if you mostly want to stream your own library and don’t care about the premium channels, PlayOn Lite lets you do just that (and only that) for free.

Finally, there’s Plex, a streaming media solution that PCWorld’s Alex Castle said would make you forget Netflix and Hulu. That’s because it’s more powerful than either Pogoplug PC or PlayOn, with features like automatically downloading metadata for each item in your library, and on-the-fly transcoding: If a particular video or music file isn’t directly compatible with the device you’re viewing it on, Plex will transcode it to a format that is compatible.

Plex sports a slick menu that makes browsing your media library an enjoyable task. Plus, Plex will automatically pull in metadata to fill out missing info like release date, artist, etc.

Like the aforementioned PlayOn, Plex offers a number of subscription channels, such as CBS, Hulu, and NBC. It even has a browser bookmarklet that you can use to add any Web video to your queue. You also get a unique email address you can use to send links to your queue, which is very handy when someone shows you an awesome video on a smartphone in the middle of a party. Just borrow the phone, email yourself the link, and watch it on your HDTV when you get home.

The downside is that Plex is a little obtuse. Setting up and using the service can be a bit confusing, and several of the company’s support pages are incomplete. Thankfully, there’s a very active user forum you can rely on for technical support.

Furthermore, although the required Plex Media Server software is free (for both Windows and Linux), certain apps and features aren’t. For example, if you want to stream your stuff to another PC, you’ll need to install the free Plex desktop client on that PC. If you prefer to stream from a Web browser, you will have to pay a $4 monthly subscription to use the Plex browser client. Plex also offers decent apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7, but each of them will cost you $4.99.

Take advantage of your cloud storage

As long as we’re talking mobile devices, if you really just want to access all your media from your smartphone or tablet, there’s one more option to consider: cloud services.

The free Dropbox app.

For example, the apps for both Dropbox and SugarSync let you view your cloud-stored photos, documents, and videos on your phone or tablet. They include rudimentary music players as well, though if you want an even better mobile jukebox experience, it’s hard to beat Google Music—currently available for Android only.

In other words, if you’re already syncing your media to the cloud, you can probably cut your PC out of the equation and stream everything to an app. Both Dropbox and SugarSync offer free accounts—2GB and 5GB of storage, respectively—but if you want more you’ll have to pay for the privilege of streaming your media from someone else’s servers. It’s not a bad solution, but nothing beats the convenience of setting up your own media-slinging machine that can deliver your files to you anywhere in the world on almost any device you own.

Make your Galaxy S4 more like stock Android, without rooting

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a stellar Android phone held back by boring design and half-baked features.

The moment Google announced the Google Play edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4, you could almost hear the buyer’s remorse from millions of people who had already picked up the regular version of the handset. Not only is the Google Play edition of the phone free from bloatware, but it also benefits from timely updates similar to Google’s line of Nexus devices. Suddenly, that pricey new phone you signed a 2-year contract for isn’t looking as lustrous as when you first got it.

I do have some good news, though: Thanks to Android’s flexible nature, you too can get your regular Samsung Galaxy S4 looking like the Google Play edition—without voiding your warranty.

Getting things started

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a lot of features you’ll need to turn off to get your phone to “stock Android.”

The first thing you’re going to want to do is clean house: Look through the apps that came preinstalled on your phone and uninstall all of the ones you don’t want. You can do this by pressing the Menu button while in the App Drawer and selecting Uninstall, or by going to the Application Manager in the Settings app. The number of apps you’ll be able to uninstall will vary depending on which carrier you’re on—Sprint generally lets you remove more pre-installed apps than Verizon, for instance.

If there’s an app you can’t uninstall, don’t worry too much about it. Just make a note of it—we'll deal with it a little later on.

When you’re done ousting any unwanted apps, head on over to the Settings and get ready to do the same to most of the Galaxy S4’s marquee features. Under the My Device tab, tap on Motions and gestures and turn off all of the options inside. Do the same for Smart screen, Air view, and Voice Control. These last few steps are completely optional, though they will help in getting that authentic “Android feel” and could potentially help you conserve your battery.

New coat of paint

Now that you’ve freed up some space and turned off any annoying extra features, it’s time to download the apps you’ll need to make it look like your phone is running stock Android. Jump into the Google Play Store and download Nova Launcher (free),Google Calendar (free), Google Keyboard (free), and WidgetLocker Lockscreen ($3).

Nova Launcher is a launcher replacement app that lets you customize your home screen and app drawer. It gives you extra functionality not found in Samsung’s TouchWiz launcher, such as the ability to personalize your app icons, and overall feels much faster than Samsung’s offering.

WidgetLocker Lockscreen is like Nova Launcher, but for your lock screen: It lets you add custom shortcuts to your lock screen and allows you to choose how you phone behaves when you wake it up. It’s the only paid app on this list, but it’s well worth the $3 entry fee to remove the bland Samsung lock screen and its grating sound effects.

Although I have no real qualms with either the Samsung keyboard or calendar, you’re going to want the Google Calendar and Google Keyboard apps to really complete the stock Android look. Neither of these apps have any real benefits over the ones included in the Galaxy S4, I'm just recommending them to be throrough.

Once those apps have finished downloading, press the Home button on your phone and select Nova Launcher from the prompt that pops up. Your home screen will resemble the stock Android home screen, albeit with a few extra animations for opening and closing apps.

Remember those apps you couldn't uninstall? The paid version of Nova Launcher offers the ability to hide those unwanted apps from appearing in your app drawer, and might be worth investing in if you’re sick of seeing that NFL Mobile app on your phone. It's not the same thing as actually removing the apps, but it's out of sight, out of mind, right?

You’ll need to setup Google Keyboard and WidgetLocker Lockscreen before you can use them, but the process is dead simple. Just follow the onscreen prompts. Google Calendar will display the calendar for whatever Google account is the default for your phone, so there’s no setup required. If you prefer Samsung's keyboard or calendar, just uninstall Google's.

What we can’t change

Even though your Galaxy S4 now looks like the one you can buy directly from Google, the changes we’ve made here are mostly cosmetic and don’t extend much beyond the home screen and lock screen. The dialer, notification shade, messages, and many other parts of the operating system will look the same as when you first picked up the phone and they can’t be changed without rooting the device—a somewhat complicated and warranty-voiding process.

Another downside of not owning the Google Play edition is that system updates are still handled by your carrier, so your Galaxy S4 might not always run the latest version of Android. This may open you up to security vulnerabilities and means you might miss out on cool new features down the line.

But a big advantage of not having a Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 is that you can always undo your changes and regain access to all of Samsung’s extras and goodies. Samsung included a number of noteworthy additions to the Galaxy S4, none of which you get access to if you bought your phone directly from Google. You take the good with the bad when you buy a phone on contract, but at least this way you get to experience the best of both worlds.

Beneath this world, full of mundane work and chores and ho-hum everyday things, lies another layer of existence chock-full of wonderful, borderline mystical excitement. This almost alternative reality isn’t secret, per se—it’s just that most people don’t know how to really see it.

This is the premise of Ingress, an invite-only gaming app favored by Android geekorati. And this very “secret world” premise is seemingly built into the bones of Niantic Labs, the clandestine Google outfit behind Ingress and Field Trip, Niantic’s other forward-thinking app.

Niantic’s hidden worlds are paving the way for a new reality when situationally intelligent data (like Google Now) and wearable computing (like Google Glass) become the norm. Beyond this world of smartphones and physical senses lie vast swathes of new possibilities, hints of truly augmented realities. Niantic Labs wants to blaze the trail for these technologies.

“The goal?” Niantic head John Hanke repeats when I ask him what the grand goal for Ingress is, aside from coaxing otherwise sedentary gamers deeper out of their basement cocoons. He pauses for a moment.

What is Ingress?

But before we delve into the future, we have to delve into the game. First and foremost, Ingress was built to be just plain fun—and just plain useless unless you put your boots on the ground and wander out into the world.

Ingress, currently in invite-only beta on Android, is an augmented reality game that forces players to choose between two factions—the Enlightened and the Resistance—and then take to the physical streets and battle the opposing force for control of Portals set in real-world locations. Deploying virtual resonators and shields beefs up your own Portals, while hack attacks break down the opposition’s strongholds. Portals in close proximity can be linked together to form Control Fields if your team controls them all, and the population count of the areas in a Control Field adds to your faction’s global score.

All of the action takes place on your smartphone screen, an augmented reality layered over a Google Maps-powered grid of local streets. Chat functions let you plan group maneuvers or taunt the enemy. (Resistance for life!)

That’s an ultra-basic description; the game is a lot more fun (and detailed) than that staid explanation.

NIANTIC LABS

Making things even more interesting is the deep backstory Niantic has actively woven around the game, a tale of conspiracy and secret codes and mind-controlling Shapers from other dimensions, all propelled forward by the Niantic Project website, an Ingress YouTube Channel, and the Ingress andNiantic Project Google+ accounts. There are even Ingress books.

Characters from the narrative frequently turn in up the real world, such as Misty Hannah and Klue S.’s recent appearance at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, the big Ingress battle at Google I/O, and the mysterious "Anomaly" event scheduled for June 7 in Cross Plains, Texas.

Taken as a whole, Ingress is an awesome game, but beyond that, it’s also an awesome experience if you drink deep from the universe Niantic has cultivated. Try it out if you can—you can request an invite on the Niantic Project website, beg a current player (like me!) for an invite, or ping the Ingress Google+ account with a creative request to try and crack open the door.

It’s hella fun, and it sprouted from very simple roots. Niantic head John Hanke wants you to go outside.

“When we set up the Niantic group, the goal was to look at this intersection of mobile and location—and entertainment, to some extent—and try to build apps that would encourage people to get the most out of their city, or town, or of being outside,” Hanke says.

Exploring the intersection of location and mobility and technology—“ubiquitous computing,” as it’s often called—is nothing new for Hanke. Before leading up Niantic, he led product management for Google’s “Geo” division of location-based services, and before that, Hanke founded Keyhole, a company that was eventually bought by Google and transformed into the seminalGoogle Earth.

“We want to encourage people to move and explore,” Hanke continues. “Those higher-level goals inspired both Field Trip and Ingress—they kind of grew up together. They share some DNA.”

More than being just talk, that philosophy is built into the bones of Ingress.

Virtually all of Ingress’s Portals are situated around major landmarks of native interest: Markers, museums, statues, parks, esteemed places of learning, restaurants shaped like footwear, or similar locations. (Users can also submit local landmarks for Portal consideration.) And to gain the “Exotic Matter” energy needed to battle for those Portals, you’ll often need to traverse parks, walkways, and other off-the-beaten-path locales.

That said, Niantic is part of Google. Information generated by Ingress is being used as a testing ground for something bigger—a guinea pig for software built for wearable computers and augmented reality.

Peering at the future

“The first generation of mobile apps were basically desktop apps transplanted to mobile,” Hanke explains. “Then we started to see apps that could only really exist on mobile—things that take advantage of mobility, location, sensors, and other various things that are unique to mobile, so that you have these experiences that are kind of native to mobile. That was the second phase.

“I think the third phase is the evolution toward what comes after the cellphone, in terms of wearable computing,” he continues. “There are a lot of different things out there. There are things like Google Glass coming, and there’s the Pebble watch and Fitbit and various things like that that people are playing around with.

“So there’s this whole wave of devices coming that are sort of post-cellphone. We wanted to kind of anticipate that, and be at the forefront of what that next wave of apps will be like. With Ingress, we wanted to make a really fun, location-based game that would kind of take advantage of those devices when they’re available on the market.”

Ingress is paving the way for Google Glass, Fitbit, the mythical iWatch, and other types of wearable computers.

Although an Ingress Glass app has yet to be created, Hanke hopes to eventually open up some of the technology used in Ingress to encourage other developers to create even more augmented reality apps. Remember Niantic’s notable presence at Google I/O?

“That’s the long-term goal,” Hanke says, “to pioneer the path and make sure Google’s a leader in that area.”

All about the ads

But again, this is a division of Google we’re talking about here. Part of Niantic’s long-term goal includes figuring out how to best monetize the ubiquitous computing experience. Nobody wants banner ads and pop-ups screaming half an inch from their eyeballs all day long.

“We’re interested in exploring new kinds of monetization that can exist in the world of these apps,” Hanke says. He’s quick to explain that Google isn’t pressuring Niantic to fund itself immediately, though.

“It’s more a case of we want to understand what kind of monetization opportunities might be possible in this location-based, mobile, ubiquitous computing world. It’s more that we want to understand that than any sort of (monetization) pressure. We view these products as a way to explore this application space, and that includes monetization opportunities. We’ve been upfront about that.”

“Frankly, we’ve had a ton of fun working with these partners, and thinking it out, and working with these brands to incorporate them into the game that add to the gameplay rather than taking away from it,” Hanke says. Promotional partners have proven willing to grope through the dark with Niantic, trying new advertorial methods that tie more directly into the apps. Scoutmob’s free daily deals have been integrated within Field Trip. Zipcar and Jamba Juice locations have been turned into Ingress Portals (and sometimes stock other goodies), while physical Duane Reade stores have been outfitted with barcodes that can be scanned to grant in-game weapons.

“By and large, I think we’ve had success in that regard," Hanke explains. "We’ve developed characters in conjunction with Zipcar and Jamba Juice that have made their way into the game, so some of the interactions affect gameplay, and others integrate the brands into the story.”

Some may find the inclusion of in-game advertising distasteful, but as an avid user of both apps, I can say that none of the promotional material is obnoxious; in fact, thus far it all truly adds to the experience.

That’s not to say Niantic’s efforts are free from future pitfalls, however.

The privacy question

Maybe it’s because of the uproar over Google’s unified privacy policy or Microsoft’s truthiness-filled Scroogled campaign, but it’s almost a prerequisite (alas) to mention privacy whenever you mention Google these days.

To be fair, the experimental, self-proclaimed “ubiquitous” nature of Niantic’s apps would theoretically be ideal suppliers for Google’s vast data silos. The blend of GPS data and your physical reaction to Field Trip notifications could be a treasure trove for decoding behavioral trends, while Ingress’s very design lends itself well to enhancing an area of Google Maps that could benefit from some extra attention.

None of that is happening, though. Or at least not yet.

“We’re trying to map (Ingress) energy to places where people walk, and walking paths, and so on,” Hanke says. “Could it help Google Maps? Probably yes. We’re not currently doing that. But it could… If activities in the game can ultimately have the effect of helping Google’s map data, I would say that’s great, but it definitely wasn’t the driving force behind the creation of the game.”

In fact, Niantic’s apps are so self-contained that they don’t even directly share data with each other. When I questioned Hanke about the way Ingress Portal information can appear in Field Trip if you use both apps, he said that Ingress doesn’t receive any special treatment despite the fact that both apps were made in-house.

“Basically, Ingress is just another publisher for Field Trip,” he says. “We treat Ingress the same way we treat Atlas Obscura, or Arcadia, or any of the other publishers in Field Trip.”

That will likely change in time. As they become established, and especially if they help pioneer a path in wearable computing like Google Glass, Ingress and Field Trip will no doubt start sharing more information back and forth with other Google services.

NIANTIC LABS

But is that a bad thing? It’s all the same company, after all, and the type of ubiquitous computing that promises to make our life easier and just plain more futuristic wouldn’t be possible with so-called Big Data. Without Google Maps, there would be no Niantic, and without the vilified, unified privacy policy that allows for cross-pollination between Google’s various services, there would be no Google Now.

Delving into new grounds brings new questions. The future doesn’t change easily, to Larry Page’s great sadness. But for today at least, Niantic Labs is treating your personal data with kiddie gloves, and it has already achieved one of its lofty goals.

Ingress itself is an absolute blast to play.

Five steps to ultimate Firefox security

Over the years, many have touted Mozilla’s Firefox as one of the most secure Web browsers. But as with other browsers, the security level offered depends on the settings. Some security features need to be manually enabled. Those turned on by default should still be double-checked.

Follow these five steps to lock down Firefox. Start with the essentials in the browser’s own settings, then choose some useful add-ons. Finally, keep track of your plug-ins so you can patch the inevitable security holes.

Enable a master password

Like other browsers, Firefox by default allows anyone who accesses your computer to log in to sites where you’ve saved the password. And as with Google Chrome, a list of the saved usernames and passwords can be viewed via the Options menu of Firefox.

Fortunately, Firefox offers a master password feature that encrypts and password-protects the saved password list. When enabled, you must enter the master password the first time you use a saved password, once per browser session. Additionally, even though you enter the master password the first time, you must always enter it before you can view saved passwords via the Options menu. This is a great feature to help prevent casual snooping of your passwords. It even prevents most third-party utilities from recovering them.

To enable the master password feature, open the Firefox menu, select Options,select the Security tab, and then check theUse a master password option.

Use a strong password for syncing

Like Google Chrome, Firefox has a syncing feature to synchronize your bookmarks, passwords, and other browser data to Firefox browsers running on other computers and devices. Fortunately, Firefox encrypts all synced data, not just your saved passwords (as Google Chrome does). Additionally, Firefox has more security than what Chrome offers by default when you’re setting up a new computer or device to sync. In Firefox, you must log in with your Firefox Sync password. Then you must either enter a random passcode from the new device into one that you've already set up, or take the recovery key from a device you’ve already set up and input that key into the new device.

So you don’t have much to worry about with Firefox syncing—as long as you use a strong password, one with upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. If someone knows or cracks the password, and has access to a device you’ve already set up with syncing, they can then set up other devices with syncing and access your passwords and other browser data.

To enable or change sync settings, open the Firefox menu, select Options, and select the Sync tab.

Verify that security options are enabled

Like other popular browsers, Firefox includes some basic security and privacy settings. Though most are enabled by default, you should ensure they haven’t been disabled.

Make sure the first three security options are selected to protect against malware and phishing attacks.

Start by opening the Firefox menu and selecting Options. In the Options window, select the Security tab. Ensure that the first option, Warn me when sites try to install add-ons, is enabled to help prevent sites from automatically installing add-ons, as some can be dangerous. Then ensure that the next two options, Block reported attack sites and Block reported web forgeries, are also checked to help enable protection against malware and phishing.

Check the first privacy option to help prevent websites from tracking your online activity.

Next, select the Privacy tab. And if you want more privacy online, select the first option, Tell websites I do not want to be tracked, which isn’t enabled by default. Although it can’t prevent all tracking, it will reduce tracking by those sites that support this type of option.

Ensure that the first content option here is enabled to block pop-ups.

Now, select the Content tab. To prevent pop-up windows that can be annoying and even contain phishing ads, ensure that the first option is enabled: Block pop-up windows.

Lastly, select the Advanced tab, select theUpdate subtab, and ensure thatAutomatically install updates is selected.

Use add-ons for more protection

Consider installing these security-related add-ons for extra protection:

NoScript helps you control which sites can use JavaScript, Silverlight, Flash, and other embedded content, as they can be used maliciously to infect your computer or for phishing attempts.

Adblock Plus blocks banners, pop-ups, and video advertisements on websites to reduce clutter and the resulting annoyance; they can even reduce accidentally stumbling upon adware, malware, and phishing attacks.

Web of Trust (WOT) shows the user ratings of sites and blocks dangerous sites—such as those with malware—to increase safe surfing, shopping, and searching on the Web.

HTTPS Finder automatically detects and enforces HTTPS/SSL-encrypted connections when available—great in helping to reduce the chances of an eavesdropper on a Wi-Fi network from capturing your login details.

Xpnd.it! short URL expander allows you to hover over shortened links to see the real URL and other basic information about the site so you know where it leads before clicking.

Check and update plug-ins

Cyber criminals regularly use vulnerabilities in popular browser plug-ins (like Java and Adobe products) to infect and invade computers. Most plug-ins regularly release updates to patch security holes. Many plug-ins are set by default to update automatically or at least to notify you of them. However, it’s a good idea to check periodically for updates. Consider using the Mozilla plug-in checker or third-party sites like Qualys BrowserCheck for updates for other browsers.

A little vigilance goes a long way

Firefox is pretty secure on its own, but you can make it even more secure with the right settings and add-ons. Good password management remains essential, too: Create and enable a strong master password so others can’t use or view your passwords. And if you use the syncing feature to synchronize your passwords and browser data across devices, use a strong password to prevent others from syncing. Finally, keep tabs on your add-ons and plug-ins to make sure they’re giving you the best possible protection.

The VAIO Pro models will be available in Carbon Black and Carbon Silver on June 9. The VAIO Pro 11 is expected to fetch $1149, while the VAIO Pro 13 will go for $1249.

The VAIO Duo 13 combines the best features of a notebook with the convenience of a tablet.. The 2.93-pound computer expands its touch screen size from the original VAIO Duo 11 by minimizing the bezel. Sliding the screen up from tablet mode reveals a full-sized backlit keyboard and a trackpad.

The Duo 13 continues to work even when put into a sleep state. It updates applications and receives mail with minimal power consumption.

Yahoo won't ruin Tumblr, CEO Marissa Mayer says, but Tumblr users are understandably skeptical of that promise. Yahoo has a history of buying popular properties (Flickr, Delicious) and letting them wither away. But Tumblr will change. It has to. Yahoo must monetize the popular platform to justify its $1.1 billion price tag. And you know what that means: More ads.

What to expect in the Age of Yahoo

Tumblr has been experimenting with advertising for the last year, though founder David Karp has in the past expressed his strong dislike of online ads. Tumblr currently allows promoted posts on desktop and mobile version of the site and has experimented with interactive brand campaigns, but that’s it—so far. In a Monday morning conference call, Mayer said the company will be experimenting with different ways to advertise, including ads within users’ dashboards—Tumblr’s version of a news feed, which only bloggers see, not viewers. Another possibility involves Yahoo partnering with bloggers to display targeted ads on blogs. Mayer said bloggers would have to give permission for that to happen.

Native ads (also known as sponsored posts that look like real content, but are actually paid advertising) are all the rage these days, but Tumblr has struggled to make those ads translate into revenue. The power of Yahoo's massive sales team could change that.

But any increase in advertising should be incremental and intuitive for Tumblr’s existing community. Mayer risks alienating the kids Yahoo desperately needs to make the company relevant again. Slowly rolling out more dashboard ads and partnering with bloggers who want advertising to turn their blogs into money-makers is a good strategy for Yahoo, says Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

“I think this is exactly the right thing that Yahoo should be doing,” Blau says. “They don’t want to ruin the business right now. They don’t want to come in and take away the great experience. They want to help propel it. They want to help them scale infrastructure, design, everything that Tumblr doesn’t have because it’s a small company.”

Tumblr founder David Karp took to Tumblr (of course) to reassure bloggers that the Yahoo deal will be a boon for the company.

"We’re not turning purple," Karp wrote in a Monday blog post. "Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing."

More ads, but also more GIFs

Don’t expect any big shifts, at least not in the near term. Mayer doesn’t want to alienate the community Tumblr has built, particularly because that young user base is exactly why Yahoo paid big bucks for the site.

Tumblr is incredibly popular with 18- to 24-year-olds—and likely teens even younger than that—who flock to the blogging platform for hilarious GIFs and adorable cat photos. Yahoo is expecting Tumblr’s 300 million monthly visitors and 105 million bloggers will grow its own traffic by 20 percent (though Yahoo will not be bringing its signature purple branding to Tumblr’s blogs).

“[The future of technology] is not going to come from old curmudgeons sitting in glass towers, it’s going to come from people who want to be creative and buck the trend. They can find some of these people in the Tumblr crowd itself,” Blau says. “That is the type of crowd and community that Yahoo really needs to expand, to make them cooler, to give them a new audience.”

Yahoo has already spent a few million here and there for nine mobile-focused start-ups this year, but Tumblr is by far its largest investment.

Finally Yahoo will decide to buy Tumblr for $1.1 billion

After a weekend chock full of rumors and speculation, Yahoo has announced it plans to acquire Tumblr, the popular social service that hosts more than 105 million GIF-filled blogs, for $1.1 billion in cash.

That's a whole lot of users, and a whole lot of cash. In her announcement—appropriatelyposted on Yahoo's Tumblr blog—Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer promised “not to screw it up.”

The deal is the largest made by Marissa Mayer since she took over Yahoo last summer and follows nine other acquisitions by the company. The Tumblr transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to take effect in the second half of the year.

Founder David Karp will continue as chief executive officer of Tumblr and “the product roadmap, their team, their wit, and irreverence will all remain the same,” Mayer said.

The heads of the two companies took to Tumblr to explain the union and (hopefully) alleviate some fears.

“Yahoo will help Tumblr get even better, faster. In terms of working together, Tumblr can deploy Yahoo’s personalization technology and search infrastructure to help its users discover creators, bloggers, and content they’ll love. The two companies will also work together to create advertising opportunities that are seamless and enhance user experience,” Yahoo CEO Mayer said.

Tumblr CEO Karp wrote on his company’s blog: “Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. In a press release, Yahoo said Tumblr has more than 300 million monthly unique visitors and 120,000 signups every day; it sees 900 posts per second and 24 billion minutes spent on site each month. The combination of Tumblr and Yahoo is expected to grow Yahoo’s audience by 50 percent, to more than a billion monthly visitors. Yahoo's traffic is also expected to grow by approximately 20 percent.

Not everyone is as optimistic as Karp and Mayer, however. Unhappy Tumblr users have expressed their discontent with the buyout in droves, as is readily evident by simply searching for "Yahoo" on Tumblr and witnessing a flood of images like the one at right.

"They fear loss of control over the interface, over privacy, and over the freedom of expression in general," Gartner analyst Andrew Frank told IDG News Service via email.

Meanwhile, Matt Mullenweg, the founder of rival blogging service WordPress, noted on his blog Sunday that the rumors of the Tumblr acquisition at the weekend have already prompted a massive spike in users importing their Tumblr posts to WordPress.

"Normally we import 400-600 posts an hour from Tumblr, last hour it was over 72,000,” he wrote.

Continuing, Mullenweg expressed what sounded like slight remorse over the Tumblr-Yahoo marriage. “I’m curious to see what the creative folks behind Tumblr do with their new resources, both personal and corporate, but I’m more interested to know what they would have done over the next 5-10 years as an independent company.”

Migrate Tumblr content to WordPress

To migrate your content to WordPress.com, navigate to your WordPress dashboard and click the Tools tab from the navigation on the left. Then select Import.

On the next page, select Tumblr from the list, then click “Connect to Tumblr to begin.” You’ll be asked to grant the WordPress.com application read-and-write access to your Tumblr account. Click Allow.

The application will redirect you back to your WordPress dashboard to select the Tumblr blog you want to import. Find the one you want and click “Import this blog.” If your import gets stuck or you want to import from a different Tumblr account, click on the “Clear account information” button at the bottom to reset the importer. When the import is complete, the “Action/Status” section will read “Finished!”

Importing your Tumblr blog could take a while, the site warns, and because the importing process happens in the background, you may not see immediate results. If this happens, WordPress says, revisit that page to check on its progress.

Some would argue that doing so is an antiquated idea. After all, Windows 7 and 8 don't need regular reboots to continue running smoothly the way earlier versions did. On most modern systems you can leverage sleep/hibernate modes almost indefinitely, enjoying the benefits of quick wake/standby without ever actually shutting down.

Ah, but sleep mode continues to draw a bit of power, so it's not always the best option--especially for battery-conscious laptop users. And, let's face it, some users are just accustomed to turning off their PCs at the end of the day.

It's long been one of the great ironies of Windows that you're supposed to click through a shut-down process rather than just pressing the power button. After all, isn't that the off switch?

Turns out you can indeed use the power button to shut down your PC. It just requires a quick bit of configuration. Here's how to do it in Windows 8 (and Windows 7, once you reach the Control Panel):

1. Click the Desktop tile (or press Win-D) to enter Desktop mode.

2. Access the Charms bar by mousing into one of the right corners (or pressing Win-C), then click Settings.

3. Click Control Panel. (Interestingly, there are actually three other ways to access the Control Panel in Windows 8. Use whatever works best for you.)

4. In the search field, type power, then click Change what the power buttons do.

5. You should see two pull-down menus alongside When I press the power button. One is for when the laptop's running on battery power, the other for when it's plugged in. Choose the shut down setting for one or both.

6. Click Save changes and you're done.

As you may have noticed, this screen also lets you change the functions for the sleep button (if your laptop has one) and for what happens when you close the laptop's lid. Social media has been a boon for businesses small and large, but it's also becoming a minefield for those unable to manage the increasing complexities of the run-and-gun nature of the beast. On a seemingly daily basis, we suffer through one “Twitter disaster” or another. It's becoming so commonplace that “Twitter disaster” really doesn't deserve to be in quotes.

Damage can occur with incredible swiftness. Although tweets and Facebook posts can be deleted, evidence of their existence is invariably captured and collected for posterity within seconds of their going live. Say something wrong on a social network, and it will haunt you for life.

Don't believe me? Check out these nine all-too-common reasons for failure, all of which involve real businesses being undone by a simple, wayward message on social media.

1. Hand the keys to someone not ready to drive

A sign of an intern gone wild?

It's understandable that as a small-business owner you might not want to spend your days tending to the Twitter and Facebook pages. It's a high-effort job that often has minimal bottom-line impact, so it's very tempting to outsource the task to another company or hand it off to a low-level staffer.

Big mistake.

The annals of business will likely record thousands of cases of posts and tweets gone wrong, all courtesy of contractors or staff members who simply didn't know what they were doing. The mixing up of a personal account and a corporate account is usually to blame for this problem. It's how a “social media specialist” posted a note about “gettng slizzerd” on Dogfish Head beer in the middle of the night to the Red Cross Twitter account. And how Chrysler sent out a tweet bemoaning that no one in Detroit “knows how to f**king drive.”

The Red Cross actually handled the affair well, playing it off as a harmless mistake. Chrysler, however, went with the unfortunate, knee-jerk response (before fessing up):blaming hackers.

Solution: Ensure that your authorized social media users are properly trained and don’t intermingle their personal accounts with corporate ones. Tools such as HootSuite can make managing multiple accounts easy, but they greatly increase the risk of making errors if your authorized tweeters are trigger-happy.

2. Fire the person in charge of social media

At least change your passwords before you fire the social media guru.

Eventually you're going to have to fire someone. How you handle that termination may well determine the way your business will go from that point on—particularly if one of the people getting the axe has the keys to the social media accounts.

HMV, a global entertainment retailer, learned this lesson the hard way when it began a round of layoffs, resulting in a live-tweeting of the “mass execution” by its social media planner, who was among the fallen. It was sour grapes, to be sure, but the tweets also included allegations that the company's management had used illegal interns.

Hey, business isn't always pretty, and sometimes layoffs are the only option. But do yourself a favor and ensure that you’ve changed the passwords to key social media accounts before said layoffs take place. Managing the way such an event is presented to the world is a critical part of ensuring your company’s long-term survival.

3. Confuse a reply with a direct message on Twitter

Don't act like a Weiner.

This one has actually been with us for decades. The original mistake got its start in email: accidentally “replying to all” instead of just to the original sender. Poof, your snarky remark about the president's bad breath just went to the whole company.

We’ve all been there, but Twitter has compounded the problem. When you send an @ reply to a message instead of the DM you intended, it doesn't just go to the whole company, it goes to the entire world…at least until you delete it.

Endless disasters have gone down this way. Charlie Sheen @'ed his phone number to the world. Economist Nouriel Roubini got in hot water when he unintentionally went public with an intended DM calling a reporter a loser.

Of course, the mother of all DM failures remains the tragic case of Congressman Anthony Weiner, who didn’t just send an easily forgotten lewd remark to the universe, but also accidentally distributed a picture of his nether regions.

Twitter long ago tried to fix the arcane problem that made accidental DMs rampant, but the issue continues to crop up due to the simple and common user error of confusing the @ with the D. (A related problem is rampant on Facebook, as hapless commenters sometimes post ostensibly private messages on a contact's public timeline.)

There's no tech fix for this mistake: Smart business owners know that the best practice is to never use social media for private messages at all.

4. Commit rank insensitivity

Oh, Kenneth.

Corporate America probably isn't the best barometer for good taste, and when you add social media to the mix, things only get worse. Leapfrogging onto a trending hashtag (say, #Kardashian) is a popular tactic to nab a few extra followers, but if the topic is one of a sensitive nature, that tactic can backfire, badly.

In recent months, we've seen American Apparel and Gap get raked over the coals for suggesting that people do their shopping during Hurricane #Sandy, Celeb Boutiquespanked for encouraging people to buy its #Aurora dress, and Kenneth Cole get beaten up for suggesting that riots in #Cairo were due to his new spring collection. (For Cole's part, the obliviousness appears intentional. He was back at it again last month with a #gunreform tweet that was related to selling shoes.)

Sure, the Internet is hardly a place where common sense and good taste rule the day, but the hive loves nothing more than to jump on someone who tries to profit from the misery of others. Leveraging (or even mentioning) current events that involve human suffering (or death) simply shouldn't be part of any business's social media strategy, ever.

5. Fail to understand corporate confidentiality

Here's a tip: If you're the CFO of a public company, don't attend a private board meeting and then tweet “Board meeting. Good numbers=Happy Board.” That's exactly what Gene Morphis, CFO for women’s clothing retailer Francesca’s, did last year, promptly causing the company's stock price to spike 15 percent. Such behavior is unfortunately illegal, a practice known as selective disclosure, in which private information is divulged to a few—in this case, Morphis’s 238 Twitter followers—instead of to the world at large. A later investigation (after Morphis got fired) revealed a long history of inappropriate sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

Thinking about going public someday? Make sure that you personally follow all of your financially oriented employees on social networks and conduct regular audits to keep tabs on what they’re telling the world.

6. Ask for potentially hostile users to chime in

It sure sounds like a good idea: Build some Twitter and Facebook juice by asking those who follow you to write something about your company on the network. Sadly, that concept often doesn’t work out—it doesn't matter how many people love you, because plenty of people out there surely hate you just as much, and they follow your Twitter account, too.

Just ask McDonald’s, which created a hashtag (#McDstories) and encouraged its use among McFanatics to talk up the burger chain. Of course, the McTrolls got there first, with a flood of tweets like “Ordered a McDouble, something in the damn thing chipped my molar. #McDStories.” It's a problem that keeps cropping up, with hashtag hijacks hitting Qantas’s#QantasLuxury and luxe UK retailer Waitrose with #WaitroseReasons.

The jury is out on whether trying to invent a hashtag is a smart idea, but remember that once you unleash it, you can’t undo it. Ensure that sentiment is squarely in your favor before trying this trick (and perhaps gaming the system a bit by offering a prize to your favorite tweeter).

7. Get political

Never mix chickens with politics.

Savvy business owners know to never, ever bring politics into the workplace. With the country split down the middle on most political issues, even the most innocent of political comments is likely to offend 50 percent of your customers.

But that didn't stop Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy from speaking publicly about his opposition to same-sex marriage last year, which culminated in a war of words across the social media landscape. Chick-fil-A eventually had to distance itself formally from political discourse, but the months-long siege against the company did its damage, with boycotts, lost partnerships, and general ill will that could have been avoided had Cathy simply shut his big mouth.

8. Fail to understand the mechanics of social media

Hashtags, @ replies, tagging—this stuff isn't necessarily easy or intuitive, and it’s forgivable if you make a mistake once in awhile. That said, the stakes are higher when you’re using social media in a business setting, so it pays to get things right.

Case in point: CVS Pharmacy created a new Twitter account, @CVS_Cares, and asked customers to follow it and provide feedback to the company. The problem: @CVS_Cares was locked, so no one could see its tweets or even follow the account without requesting permission.

Related to item number 4, Entenmann’s found itself looking stupid when it tweeted “Who’s #notguilty about eating all the tasty treats they want?!” in the middle of the Casey Anthony trial. It’s hard to tell whether this post was an intentional attempt to irresponsibly jump on a popular hashtag or just plain stupidity. The company lobbied hard that it was the latter.

Who doesn't love an all-caps cease-and-desist order?

Such stupidity was taken to the extreme earlier this week in the already infamous case of Amy's Baking Company. When the business found itself slapped with a few negative Yelp comments and Reddit users started heckling the owners’ appearance on Kitchen Nightmares, Samy and Amy Bouzaglo attempted to fight back, primarily via the business’s Facebook account—in all caps. Fueling the fire quickly made the problem worse, turning an amusing story that could have burned out in 15 minutes into a disaster that will stand as a case study of how not to engage critics on social media. Understand that hive mind, and do not feed the trolls.

9. Neglect social media security

When in doubt, claim you got hacked.

Although a lot of terrible social media behavior can be blamed on accidents or publicity stunts (including all those “accidental nudes” celebrities so commonly send out), some of this stuff really is due to hacker involvement. Social media security is a serious issue, and phishing attacks that attempt to abscond with your Twitter and Facebook credentials are unbearably common. Lock your business’s accounts up tight with strong passwords, and ensure that the only people who have access to the accounts are those who truly need it.

Avoid mistakes with commonsense preparation

Social media is a great communication tool for business—until the communication goes awry, and the mistake is there for everyone to see. Setting sensible ground rules and processes will minimize your risk. After all, you wouldn’t want to be the tenth business listed in this article.

New Google Maps make maps interesting again

We may not have a new version of Android to drool over, but at least we've got more feature-filled, better-looking maps. At its Google I/O keynote Wednesday morning, Google announced an enhanced version of its popular Google Maps service. The demos shown on stage drew some applause out of the otherwise listless attendees, and I was itching for the chance to put this improved version of Maps through its paces.

After playing around with Maps and virtually visiting several locales around the world, I'm impressed with how much Google has improved its already great mapping tool—though I think the company might have oversold it a bit on stage.

The new Google Maps

The new desktop Maps version looks fantastic: Google has done away with the navigation bars on the top and left side of the screen, dedicating your entire browser window to your map. For the most part, menus are hidden out of sight, which makes the entire interface feel less cluttered. I know there are people who'll miss all the knobs and sliders of the older version, but if you only really use Google Maps to get around, this new layout will fit your needs perfectly.

Look up an address or city, and you'll immediately fly to that location with an incredibly smooth and fluid animation. Zooming in or panning around the map is much faster than it was previously, and doesn't require you to wait 30 seconds for all the elements of the map to refresh themselves. Switching between the standard and satellite views still isn't as fast as I'd like, but the 3D models that pop up when you zoom in close no longer look like deformed blobs, and you can actually tell buildings apart.

Google Maps, meet Google+

Google, ever trying to find ways to push people into using Google+, has incorporated more social elements into Google Maps. If you search for, say, "Pizza, San Francisco," Google Maps will display pizza restaurants in the area and highlights ones rated highly by Zagat or your friends on Google+.

Searching for a restaurant or venue will return Info Cards like this one.

The new Zagat feature is helpful for finding out basic information like a restaurant's business hours, location, and phone number, and the professionally sourced Zagat reviews are a step up from the reviews you see on Yelp, where people complain about not getting enough napkins. I'd like to tell you how well the Google+ integration worked, but I don't know anyone who actually uses Google+, and even if I did, I would be suspicious of their tastes.

Missing features and delving into the unknown

One feature apparently missing in this latest iteration of Google Maps is the ability to determine a user's general location.

In the current version of Google Maps, the tool uses various data points, such as your IP address and time zone, to more or less pinpoint your location on the map. Typing "My Location" into the search field will drop a marker over where Google Maps thinks you are at that moment. But I tried the same thing in the new Maps preview and was annoyed that Google Maps could no longer figure out where I was. This meant I had to manually type in my starting point whenever I searched for directions—something I may not always know when I'm traveling. Google told me the feature wasn't available in the preview mode that I tried, but that it would include the capability at a later date.

Yeah, yeah, I know I can resort to using my smartphone. But sometimes it's easier to plan things out on a larger screen. Let's hope location awareness rolls out soon.

The Explore card shows up when you search for a city or town.

Speaking of going to unknown locations, Google Maps' new Explore functionality helps you find points of interest when visiting unfamiliar cities. When you search for a place by name, an additional card appears listing a small handful of suggestions for places to explore in the area. Search for "Boston" and Google will recommend you check out the city's Italian and Chinese restaurants (somehow I think Boston is famous for a different kind of cuisine than what Google suggests).

The upcoming update to the mobile versions of Google Maps allows you to explore your location based on various categories, but on the desktop you're stuck with the two or three recommendations that Google decides to spit your way.

Now you can explore exotic locales from the comfort of your desk.

A more useful way of exploring a location—and one that doesn't involve the lackluster Explore recommendations—is to take a photo tour. After you search for the place you'd like to investigate, click on the tab on the lower right of the screen. Google Maps will present you with photo tours comprised of images taken by other users at the locale. As someone who despises traveling but enjoys taking in new sights, I got a kick out of this feature, as it allowed me to explore places like the Trevi Fountain in Rome without having to deal with the nightmare that is air transport.

Wait to give it a try

The new Google Maps definitely has a lot going for it, though it feels like one of those services that's going to stay in beta for a while. While everything worked and I didn't encounter any real bugs, some elements still need their screws tightened down.

Google will slowly roll out the update in the coming months and most people should have the enhanced version of Google Maps by some time early to mid-June. Hopefully by then, Google will have any kinks worked out, and Google Maps can go back to figuring out where I am without having to type that information in myself.

We've seen several Linux tablets emerge over the past year or so, but examples with triple-boot capabilities are much less common.

Enter the Python S3, a tablet released on Monday by Italian Ekoore that can boot three operating systems: Ubuntu Linux, Android, and Windows 8.

“The Python series was born with the purpose of uniting in a single tablet multiple operating systems,” explains the Italian Ekoore website. “The components of this device are the result of careful and accurate selection, to ensure perfect compatibility with all operating systems.”

An 11.6-inch display

First off, the Ekoore Python S3 runs an Intel dual-core 847 and boots Android 4.2, Ubuntu, or Windows. Featuring an 11.6-inch display, the device sports a keyboard docking layout with international (USA) full QWERTY, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and a secondary battery, Ekoore says.

“We chose to use a 11.6-inch display,” the company explains. “This type of display has a resolution of no less than 1366 × 768, which ensures perfect integration with applications and especially with all operating systems.”

With the Python S3, multiple user accounts can tailor toward differing user needs.

A full 8GB of RAM are available, meanwhile, as is SSD storage of 128GB.

“These features also allow the use of heavier software, developed for the Linux operating system and Windows,” Ekoore notes.

, “which is equipped with many tools that encourage the use of both the touch screen or the keyboard dock,” the company says.

The Ekoore Python S3 is available in Italy for about 599 Euros, or $770 in the United States.
