Down Memory Lane / Pieced Bag

When I first started patchwork & quilting, there was nobody around me who did those types of things. Also, it was before the internet existed, I don't think the phrase "Google it" existed. After I got paid for my first job at 16 (seriously, I didn't make much but to me it was a lot of money...). I went to a book store and bought several books about quilt making. Slowly, I mean project by project I taught myself how to cut, piece, baste, quilt and bind to complete a quilt.

Since then, my quilt making skill hasn't progressed much, but the list of quilts I want to make is growing so much faster than I can do! Living in the capital of quilt making, I mean, you might have different opinions, but I am just saying, because Utah has so many amazing quilt shops, and it is so hard not to go in.

I think this bag was my third or fourth project. At the time I liked it a lot, but over time my style has changed, I don't care for it as much. Although, whenever I look at the bag with unmatched corners and seams with uneven quilt stitches, it humbles me and brings me back to where I started.

I think I would pick totally different fabrics for this if I were to make this now.

This hexagon was not paper pieced, I kind of like it though...

The bottom of the bag is even pieced and quilted...

There are two things that come to my mind while looking at this bag...

One, I had lots of patience before the kids wore it THIN.

Two, I LOVE LOVE doing hand quilting, but there are so many quilts that I want to make. If I were to hand quilt all of them, I wouldn’t be able to make them all before I die! I really need to get better at machine quilting. :)

When I got the offer to do a review for them I squealed with joy! Olive Garden has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. When Mr. TRH and I were newlyweds we didn't have much money to eat out. It was "THE" restaurant to go to for special occasions. After we have been married for so many years with three kids, Olive Garden is still our favorite restaurant.

I love their comfortable and friendly atmosphere. To me, it is a nice restaurant that I want to dress up for a little, but it's not so fancy we can't take our kids. In fact, they offer a great selection & quality on their Kid's Menu, and I love their kiddie cups with lid, and the crayons & paper keep them busy while we wait for the food.

When I received the offer to do the review, the first people that popped in my head to take (besides the whole clan that lives under our roof) were my father and mother-in-law. I have been getting multiple procedures since October last year every three weeks or so, and sometimes it takes a week or more to recover. They have been such a wonderful support to our family during those times, picking up the kids from school the day of the procedure and keeping them for 2-3 days so I can rest better. My kids absolutely LOVE spending time at grandma and grandpa's, and I am so grateful they are so willing to help us. So, all seven of us went out to celebrate our "family". :)

Everyone's favorite bread sticks

Our favorite soup Zuppa Toscana. Did you know those breadsticks and soup/salad are unlimited?

2nd course is one of 5 new and exciting entrees...I really had a hard time choosing one, but being a seafood lover I had to choose Five Cheese Marinara Penne with Shrimp.

Mmm...I loved the sauce and the baked panko on top adds extra touch of flavor and texture

3rd course is one of 5 Dolcini desserts. We all ordered different ones so we could taste most of them. What I love about their Dolcini desserts is their portion size. Usually I am too full to order a dessert after eating a dinner. They are just so perfect to end the meal on an even happier note. :)

I must say that my favorite is Dark Chocolate Cake. Are you in the mood for Chocolate mousse and caramel cream?

We enjoyed each other's company and spending time together with yummy food. Oh, wait; there are other happy makers my kids always look forward to. The mint chocolate. :)

Basket Makeover

I have a serious love for basket style handbags. I hardly ever find the ones that I like, at the price I am willing to pay at the retail stores. So what do I do?
I find baskets at thrift stores and embellish them however I like.

The hard part is finding the baskets that are in really good condition with character.

Once I find some, there is no way that I can pass them up, I have to have them!

This basket has a lot of potential; let's see how I do...

Isn't she a cutie? I love the shape, and how the handles are flexible.
After thinking it over(and over and over) I finally started working on it.

First I added leather to the handles...

Then, I used a handkerchief I had, for lining. Folded the sides and added a couple buttons...

I was pretty happy with the results so far, then as usual I got stuck with decision making...

Silky brown flower corsage?

or, a cotton flower corsage?

I guess I don't have to pick only one, since they are removable, I can switch them up and have fun! Which one is your favorite?

Vintage Sheets & Pillowcases Quilt Top

I have been enjoying the mini vacation from my series of procedures. It has been almost 4 weeks since the last one was canceled. I was able to do some things that I have been wanting to start or finish.

I am off to get another procedure today, but I thought I would share one of the quilt tops I finished piecing. I actually started this project back in July. Then, I was stuck in the design decision and had to stop.

I used some of my vintage sheets and pillow cases from my collection along with new fabrics.

Made some cuts...

I wanted a quilt with triangles, but I wasn't sure how I wanted to combine them together, that's where I got stuck. Does that happen to you sometimes?
I finally made up my mind and pieced some of them together... (why did I say "some"? Because I used the same triangles and pieced a totally different quilt too! :) )

I am in the process of quilting this right now; I will share the picture of the finished quilt in the near future.

Kitchen Towel Apron

I shared a kitchen towel bag tutorial a while ago. When I bought that towel, I also bought this one too.

For the longest time, I couldn't decide what to make out of this, but finally I made up my mind.

I went through my stash and found several scraps that would go with the towel. I decided to make a patchwork apron. Since I had no plans whatsoever, I just made stuff up and cut here and cut there as I was sewing. So, sorry guys...no tutorial for this project.

And here is what I came up with...

I am pretty happy with the result, and started wearing it right away, I have so much to do around the house!

Usually I love really long aprons, but I had my little chefs in mind when I made this. I think I am going to sew a small button or something to the neck area so I can shorten it for them to wear as well.

What am I doing? Whipping cream with a happy tune. :)

Golden ~ Sweet Potato Recipe

Growing up, baking some sweets was one of my favorite things to do. I collected recipes over the years and some of the recipes have special story attached to them.

This sweet potato recipe was from one of my mother's friends.

Our family moved to a new area when I was 11 years old. There, my mother started making new friends and this lady was one of them. I think she was in her late 20's to early 30's at the time. They were all nice people, but I just really admired her the most, among them. She was intelligent, elegant, kind, graceful, always put together, and had a sense of style in whatever she did without trying too hard (of course being a child at the time, I didn't think quite like that. But now that I am an adult, I can point out exactly what I liked about her).

I always wished I could be like her when I grow up.

We have been exchanging Christmas cards and occasional letters over the years... and guess what? Now she is in her 50's and she is still the person I admire and look up to.

From fall to winter, as I bake this sweet potato I think of her.
This sweet potato is not too sweet or too showy as a dessert, but I never get tired of the simpleness and the gentle flavor.

I am sharing the recipe today, but it is all in grams since it was all written in Japanese.

{Sweet Potatoes}---I always double or triple the recipe.

Base:
Satsuma-imo (Japanese yam. They are yellow inside and less fiberish than regular yams. It is also great for tempura) 200g
Butter 15g
Sugar 50g
Egg Yolk 1
Heavy Cream 1 Tbsp.

Glaze:
Egg Yolk 1
Heavy Cream 2 Tsp.

1. Peel the yam skin. Cut it smaller and steam or boil them until it gets soft.

2. Mash the yams really well in a bowl and add the rest of the base ingredients.

3. Place the baking cups on the baking tray. Put the sweet potato mixture in the baking cups using a spoon.

4. Mix the glaze ingredients together in a separate bowl.

5. Brush the glaze mixture on the sweet potatoes.

6. Bake them at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. If you used small baking cups, the baking time is shorter. If you used larger cups the baking time is longer. Check often near the end though, you don't want burned bottoms!

I LOOOVE eating them with whipped cream on top (not cool whip). It transforms the sweet potatoes to a whole new different dessert. I hope you will give it a try!

Hershey's Pom-Pom Pillow

It is February already, if I were to send you lovely friends a card, it might be something like this... hehehe ;)

Well, also, I want to share a little Valentine decoration tutorial that I did.

This project is super simple and quick, I whipped this one up in 30 minute start to finish. I found this little girl's t-shirt at a thrift store last summer for a dollar...

I don't go over board to decorate my house for every occasion, but I enjoy doing some. I thought it would be fun to have a Hershey's pillow. I don't expect that everyone has the same t-shirt, but if you have any t-shirts with fun and interesting prints this should work. :)

{How to}

1. Cut the t-shirt. I am not even going to write the measurements, because every shirt is different. Just cut the shirt according to where you want the print when you make that into a pillow, and decide on the measurements.

2. Lay the t-shirt fabric right sides together with pom-poms.

3. Secure them with pins all around.

4. leaving a 3"opening, sew around it using 1/4" seam. Using the zipper foot makes it easier.

5. Snip the corners for a clean finish.

6. Turn the fabric inside out and stuff. Slip stich closed.

It is time for you to enjoy the pillow!

Easy peasy huh? For some reason my kids got a kick out of the pillow and love it.

A Finished Quilt During My Mini Vacation

I finished binding this quilt a week ago, and completely forgot to share the pictures.

Usually, with a quilt like this I would have chosen white fabric for the bias tape, but this time I wanted to do something I normally don't do... and you know what? I think I kind of like it.

Since that last procedure was canceled and we had to reschedule it, I have been working on some projects. I am going to be able to share a couple of the projects soon, and some not so soon, but I am enjoying this little "vacation time" from the procedures.

I miss having you all for my link parties on Wednesdays, but I decided that it is best to take a break until this medical craziness calms down. I don't know exactly how long, but probably a few months.

Having said that, what project is making you happy? What have you been working on?

Good Day at the Thrift Store

One of my children had a doctor's appointment a couple days ago. After that, I took him to school and dropped him off. By the time I did that though, it was better for me to stick around that area than go home, since we live kind of far from school. It is not worth the drive home if I have to leave right away to pick them up from school.

So, I decided to have a little peek at the thrift store... boy I made a good decision!

I found some vintage pillow cases, a couple of Liberty of London clothes (by Target) that I can use for quilts and such, but I will share some items that I am really thrilled about.. .check them out! (followed by a squeal of JOY)

Aren't they so pretty? I am most excited about those vintage tea towels and the table cloth. They are in such good condition, and such items are VERY hard to come by.

Every year around September I get antsy because I know there is going to be a Country Living Fair in Atlanta (or Columbus, Ohio). What's country living fair? It is basically a festival-like atmosphere with over 200 vendors and artisans selling antiques, gifts, home décor, and jewelry. Also the events are filled with seminars and demonstrations from Country Living editors, contributors, and special guests, as well as live music, gourmet markets, and more.

Mmm... Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun or what? I certainly don't care for ALL types of antiques/vintage items, but there are certain things that I love, yep, you guessed it right, fabric, linens, laces, buttons and other sewing notions. I am wondering if there is going to be some vendors selling those things at CLF, if you have been to CLF before (you lucky you!) please share your experience, I would love to know!

It is one of many dreams of mine to attend the country living fair someday. Until then, I guess I will get an adrenalin rush from the thrift stores when I find those rare vintage items. ;)

Tutorial ~ Sweater Refashion

I shared this sweater refashion at Me Sew Crazy last week. I am posting this here today just in case you missed it!

{You will need}

Sweater
Fabric
Laces, Ribbons and buttons
Matching thread

{How to}

1. Wear the sweater and decided how high you want the triangles to go. For example, just below the bust line or a few inches below the bust line. Also, mark the center with a pin.

2. I made a triangle template out of a cereal box and cut 8 triangles out of the fabric. The size of the triangles all depend on how long you cut into the sweater. If you want a more flared look, make sure that the triangle has a wide bottom. If you want a subtle flare, the triangle needs to have a narrow bottom.

3. Start making the cuts to the sweater. I made 8 cuts in all. In the center on the front and back, just to either side to those center cuts, and the sides of the sweater. They are about 4" apart, but you need to adjust that according to the width of the sweater. Just make sure that they are equal and well balanced.

4. Fold the bottom of the triangles and sew.

5. Sew the triangles to the sweater using a Serger or zigzag stitches.

6. Since the sweater was one size bigger than my size, I cut off some fabric from the sides and under the arm.

7. Pin, and sew the side. Make sure to sew in the fabric triangle to the sides at this step.

8. Make sure to mark the center of the neckline. I wanted the neckline to be slightly lower, so I drew the line and made the cut around the neck.

9. Make bias tape for the neckline. I cut mine 1 3/4" wide.

10. Sew the bias tape around the neck with zigzag stitches.

11. Start adding lace & ribbons between the triangles. Cut them to random lengths and seal the ends with fray check. Pin them in the desired places to check the balance and sew.

12. I didn't care for the long sleeves, so I cut them... I made the cut at the ribbed part, and took 6" off.

13. Sew the ribbed part back to the sleeves. I made it into 3/4 sleeves.

14. I thought it was a little bare around the neck, so I decided to decorate a little.

I made some yo-yo's, leaves, and flowers out of lace. Pinned all the embellishments onto the sweater to decide where I wanted everything.

* Sizing for the embellishments

* Yo-yo's: (S) cut 1 1/2"circles, (L) 2 1/2" circles (here is the link to how to make yo-yo's)

* Leaves: use 3/8" wide velvet ribbon. Cut 2" and fold it in half and lay both ends together and sew.

* Lace flowers: (I used 5/8" wide lace.) Cut a piece 5" long and gather the top and make a flower.

15. I wanted a little something at the back of the neck too. So, I added a tag with ribbon.

It is all done. All I needed to do was to try it on...

LOOVE it!

Tutorial~ Kitchen Towel Bag

I picked up a kitchen towel at Target a while ago. I loved the look, but I also had the intention of making something out of it.

My youngest sister who lives in Japan graduated from high school last year and moved out of my parents’ house. Now she is working at a pretty big construction company in the area and working/studying construction management.

She is about a couple hours away from my parents, every now and then, my mom and my other sister will go check up on her to see if she is ok. Sounds like she is doing well and since she is only 10 min away from where she works, she will go back to her apartment for lunch to save money, and quickly clean her room, then she will do some preparation for dinner. According to my other sister, she will even buy meat in bulk and separate it into one person portion sizes and freeze them. Wow, I didn't know my baby sister is that resourceful at age 19, good for her!

I want to send her a small package soon. So, I decided to make a grocery bag out of the kitchen towel. This is a rather small grocery bag, but it's perfect for someone like her. You can keep a bag like this in the car for unexpected needs; it happens to me sometimes. :)

Here is what I did:

1. Cut the kitchen towel and lining.

From the kitchen towel: 2 - 13 1/2" X 13 3/4" (main part of the bag), 2 - 1 1/2" x 22"(handle).

From lining: 2 - 13 1/2" x 13 3/4" (main part of the bag), 2 - 1 1/2" x 22 (handle), 1 - 8" x 6 1/2" (pocket).
2. Lay the main fabric right sides together. Sew both the sides and the bottom. Pinch the bottom corners and sew to make a boxed bottom. Cut the excess, press seams with the iron.

3. Make a pocket for lining.

a. Sew the three sides of the pocket fabric with zigzag stitches (sides and bottom).

b. Fold bottom corners then fold sides and bottom by 1/4" seam. You will have miter corners.

c. Fold the top twice and sew with straight stitches.

4. Sew the pocket onto one of the lining fabric. I just drew a line randomly on the pocket and sewed to make two separate spaces.

5. Sew lining. Just repeat step 2.

6. Make handles. Combine one main fabric, one lining right sides together and sew. Turn the fabric inside out than press with the iron.

7. Put the main bag and lining together with right sides together. Make sure that both sides of the seams match up and pin them to secure. Before you will pin all around the top, slide in the handles then pin the whole top. Leaving a 4" opening, sew all around it.

8. Turn the bag inside out. Press the top with the iron. Top stitch closed.

Now it is ready to ship to my sister!

Perhaps, she can use both sides too...

Coin Purse

Whenever I have spare time (which is mostly while I am waiting for my kiddos in the car) I make fabric folded flowers, yo-yo's and such from scraps. I have a small box I keep in my car with such small projects.

Those embellishments come in handy when I want to decorate a random project. I will show you an example.

I found this coin purse at a thrift store several months ago for a dollar. It was mint condition, and I love Gamaguchi coin purse (Gama-guchi is a Japanese word for mouth of frog) I couldn't pass it up.

While I couldn't really work on a big project, I gave a little makeover to this little missy.

Hi,I am back!

Before I begin my post to tell you what happened yesterday, let me say "I am so sorry!" for the confusing post yesterday. My Sweater refashion post is up today over at Me Sew Crazy, so if you haven't seen what I have done, and if you have time... Please go check it out. :)

I had a nice slow morning today. I know I need to cut back in sugar, but I couldn't help myself from the homemade sweet potato with whipping cream and some fruit for breakfast. Mmmm they put me in a really good mood.

So... some of you might be wondering, "she was supposed to have a procedure yesterday, what in the world she is doing blogging today". Yeah, that's what I am going to talk about. I was supposed to be at the hospital by 1:30, and I had my blood work done and ready. The procedure was supposed to start at 2:30, but we (Mr.TRH and I) kept waiting in the lobby... 3:30 rolls by...and shortly after that we were taken to the room to change and wait for the anesthesiologist. I thought Oh, finally!

Then... We kept waiting... Waiting...

Let me tell you, usually I have some kind of project in hand, because I hate to be bored. Yesterday wasn't an exception. While I was waiting, I finished binding a small quilt, did some crochet, and I ran out of things to do. Twiddling my fingers for few minute, I guess I fell asleep.

Then, I heard my doctor and nurses talking. I could tell that my doctor was clearly upset; they were trying to reach the anesthesiologist. Basically, the anesthesiologist was tied up in another procedure that was scheduled before mine and couldn't get out of it. Mr.TRH and I had a bad feeling and looked at each other, then, my doctor came in to tell us the bad news.

"Uh… guys, looks like we will have to reschedule, I am sorry."

I got poked once to have my blood drawn. I was buck naked underneath my unflattering hospital gown. Meditated to mentally be ready for the procedure all ready to go... but my response was, "Um...Ok." I knew it wasn't his fault, and it was getting close to 5:00. What else can you say?

It was a bit frustrating when I think about all the scheduling for kids, my in-law's that were taking care of my kids, all the friends and neighbors that offered to help out with meals, one of the first things I thought of was to call them to let them know what happened. Do you know what the second thing that popped into my mind? "They better not charge me for this!"

Seems like I had an awful day; but there were a few good things that came out of it.

I got to spend time with my Mr.TRH. We joked around with each other, laughed and talked a lot. Also, on the way to pick up the kids, he took me out for dinner. I have been fasting since the night before, I could eat a horse! The mini date was nice. :)

Also, while we were waiting in the lobby, this man with a "snack cart" came by. He was offering free drinks and snacks to people who were waiting. Mr.TRH got a small bag of chips. He offered me some too, but I said "Oh, I can't have any". Then, he told me that I could pick some for later. I was so excited, "Really? That's allowed?!" I picked V8, then an Oreo. As he was handing me them, he said "oh, you must be so hungry" and gave me three packs of Oreos. What a nice man! V8 and Oreos totally made my day, Mr. TRH should be so happy that I am easy to please. :)

Then, I ended up with a super duper strong hospital bag. When people are going to a procedure, they give you large plastic bag to put your belongings in. I LOVE this bag. It makes an awesome garbage bag. I use them when I do house cleaning/de-cluttering. I can drag it around the house, throw stuff in, and it will not break. So, I guess I am going to go through the house and clean and organize when I can until my next procedure.

Hi everyone! I am off to get another procedure today and I will be "forced" to slow down (well, by pain, not people). Meanwhile, I did a sweater refashion for Me Sew Crazy as a guest for her fun event, New Year's Re*sew*lution! This will post tomorrow, sorry for the confusion.

Fun of Cooking

As soon as I started to get better from the last procedure, I had the urge to cook. While I was in bed, I went through recipe books, magazines and watched some cooking shows... Mm... There are so many mouth-watering foods out there.

I have been cooking more than sewing lately, I guess that is one of the ways I say "I love you" to my family.

I made this lunch for my hubby the other day:

Sticky rice (with sesame)
Meat ball with spicy teriyaki flavor
Tamago-yaki (an egg dish)
Satsuma-imo no lemon-ni (Simmered Japanese yam in with lemon flavor)
Sausage with cheese

Then I realized I needed some green, so I added parsley. It is not really added as a dish, but parsley cleans blood, so it is good for you. :)

I just went through my fridge and threw things together with whatever I could find, but he was so happy that I was well enough to cook. The funny thing is that when I announced that I will start cooking, the whole family had a long list of requests. I am happy to say that I am near the completion of the list before my next procedure on the 17th!

I remember how fun it is to cook for the people I love and see their happy faces.

Crochet & Sewing Colaboration Project

I shared my Spider Silk Scarf project a couple posts ago. I also crocheted this while I was in bed. It started out as something to do and just to practice. I had no plans in mind. It was just blue rectangle... then I thought ooh! What if I make a pouch for Rachel?

I couldn't wait to get somewhat mobile, so I could construct the pouch with lining, zipper and add some embellishments.

I usually have tons of flowers that are already made from various fabrics. It is so fun to make fabric folded flowers, yo-yo's, and fabric covered buttons from scraps. They become so handy when I want to decorate a project in no time (they are awesome projects to work on while I am waiting for my kids at the car pool or at their after school activity!)

It turned out to be a perfect size for her, and she LOVED it! Hmm... What else can I crochet with just basic crocheting skills?

Spider Silk Scarf

Not really. I crocheted this scarf out of regular yarn, but let me tell you why I named this scarf "Spider Silk Scarf".

When I was a little girl, I had a favorite children's book called "Obake-chan to muwa muwa mu"(Japanese title). I read it so many times; the cover became worn and torn. It was about this family of friendly ghosts and the adventure of the child ghost. The funny thing is that I don't remember the detail of the book at all, even though it was my favorite book.

I just remember the happy feeling I got when I read it, and also this one particular page... mother ghost who knits stuff with spider silk. Isn't it funny how a child shows interest in certain things early on?

I went through 4 procedures (and the recovery to go with them takes way too long for my liking!) since October so far, and during those times I couldn't really start a new projects. I have been dying to start designing, drafting and sewing some clothes, but I consider those kind of big projects since they involve lots of standing. But you didn't think I am all defeated and weepy did you? Nope.

I saw yarn in my closet and it reminded me of the "spider silk" the mother ghost was using for her knitting in the book. I decided to crochet in bed. :)
It is just a simple Half Double Crochet Stitch, since I don't know much other than the basics. While I was crocheting I kept thinking about that book and that made me happy.

New Love ~ Pomegranate

I am recovering from the procedure I had last week and taking it easy.
In the meantime, let me introduce my new favorite food... pomegranate.

I was at the grocery store one day, and all of a sudden, I had this urge to eat pomegranate. I always have been a big fan of pomegranate juice (not to mention that I also have face wash with pomegranate in it), but I never really purchased them to eat.

Oh, how I LOVE it!!

I have been eating them on my salad, mixing them in yogurt with other fruit or eating them as is. I never get tired of them.

Do you have any good recipes for pomegranate? If you do, please share! :)

I can't believe the year is ending. I feel like each year is going by faster and faster (don't tell me it's that I am getting old, I blame the busy schedule...).

After the terrible earthquake in Japan, I witnessed so many wonderful people come together to do something for the people in Japan. I created this quilt to donate for a fund raiser at a huge garage sale organized by Japanese people who live around here. They were able to raise about five thousand dollars in one day!

I finished these quilt tops for my boys YEARS ago, and this year I finally finished them! It is such a good feeling to complete things like these. The great part is that the boys love the quilts and they both use them every single day. :)

Near the end of summer, I was making a bunch of yo-yo's and fabric folded flowers for this project. I just had to get busy to give real shape to an idea I had in my head. I use the bag all the time, it is just the perfect size to carry it all, not to mention, all the flowers make me smile.

Have you guessed it? Is this also your favorite? I must say, I just LOVE how this cardigan turned out. Every time I wear it, I don't mind the cold weather so much. It is simply a very cheerful feminine top.

I hope you have enjoyed visiting me this year, and continue to do so in the coming year. Because of all the procedures I'm going to have, the frequency of my tutorials might slow down. My wish is that I will be able to create things that are true to my style, yet learn something new and reflect that in whatever I make.

A Christmas Package from Japan

Just before Christmas, I received a package from my mom in Japan. Among many goodies for the whole family, there were two wrapped gifts just for me... do you want to guess what they were?

Ta-da!(followed by a scream of joy)

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I have a thing for fabrics from Liberty of London. There is a fabric store in the area I used to live and they sell fabrics by "Liberty Japan". There are original designs from Liberty of London, but printed in Japan. Oh how I LOVED going to that store... While my friends spent their money on clothing or for clubbing, I spend mine on sewing books and fabrics after payday. I was one of their loyal customers. :)

Here are some of my favorites...

Most of them are 50 cm long. Right now I am just in the looking and touching stage and haven't decided what I am going to do with them. They are such precious pieces of fabrics, I have to be sure before I cut them. I had this greedy thought that I wish I had more yardage for the ones that I absolutely LOVE, so I could make some dresses or tops for this summer. (bad Sachiko, bad)

I am going to have another procedure on the 29th, so while I am recovering I will have plenty of time to think of what to do with those fabrics. When I called my mom to thank her for the package, she started crying and apologizing for not being here to help me after the procedures. I have to say it was totally her fault that I started crying too, I guess it is contagious even over the phone...

I am so grateful that she is my mother, and it is such a nice feeling to know that I have someone that loves me and cares about me even though we are thousands of miles apart from each other.

Thanks mom for the Christmas packages and so much more.

Tutorial/ Pleated Pretty Shirt with Buttons

This t-shirt makeover is inspired by the Nickleby bib top by J Crew and I fell in love with the shirt several months ago.

I have been wanting something different rather than ruffle shirt to wear underneath a cardigan, this was a perfect design for that! I finished making this a while ago. I enjoyed wearing it and took some pictures. I am sharing a quick tutorial with you today, enjoy!

* You will need

T-shirt

Handkerchief with lace trims (20"x 20"). (Well, that's what I had at hand. You can use whatever fabric and lace for this project, but the thinner the fabric is the better)

Matching thread, various buttons

* How to

1. Mark the middle of the shirt.

2. Cut the handkerchief. I saved the lace trim from the edges to use later. If you are using regular fabric, cut the fabric to 8 1/2"x 18 1/2" to make pleats. If you are working with a bigger t-shirt, you might want more fabric to make more pleats.

3. I wasn't really thinking when I was working on this project, so I don't have a detailed step by step on how to make pleats. Basically, just fold the fabric and sew along the line, repeat then you will have pleats. I didn't even measure where to fold the fabric, I totally eyeballed it... sorry, I will have better instructions when I work on another pleated project in the future... (in the meantime, you can find a bunch of tutorials if you google it).

After you finish making the pleats, lay the pleated piece by the neckline (make sure the center matches), and cut off the excess to make a curve line.

4. Sew the edge of the lace with largest stitch setting on your sewing machine. Pull a thread to gather the lace to make ruffles. Pin it with the pleated fabric in the center of the t-shirt. Sew.

5. Add trim to the seam of the pleated fabric and lace, and neckline.

6. I decided to use different buttons to give something interesting to the shirt instead of matching buttons.

I wore this shirt several times already since I finished making it. In my opinion, it is slightly less feminine compared to the ruffle shirt, but I love this one too.

Sachiko Lately

It has been almost two weeks since the last procedure. Usually I am up and about around the house in 3-4 days and in a week or so I can handle the regular routine. Also the pain is something I can manage, not too bad.

This time it was a whole new experience. The formula the doctors used is different. With the new formula, the area that sclerosed will be permanent. My body may still form new veins, but I don't have to worry about old ones reopening. To me that is amazing news, and again, it is a testament for being hopeful paying off! Who knows, they might find a cure for me someday.

But you know what... this time the recovery is so much more painful and taking a LOT longer. The first three nights I couldn't sleep very well; I would just doze off and wake up with shocking pain. I have a bunch of DVD of Japanese TV shows I didn't have time to watch for a long time, so I just laid on the bed and watched them.

I just have to keep in mind that this treatment is permanent and take them one treatment at a time. It will be worth it right?

They found a bunch of areas that they can treat. So over the next several months, my life will be all about the procedure and recovery. Between those times, if I have some days that are good, I can use the time for my family and creating & blogging... you know, priorities.

I hope you guys will understand when you come back and my posts are little "blah".

Today, for the first time in 12 days I held the needle to start quilting the quilt above. I used a charm pack a got at the bloggers meet up in May to make this quilt. I pieced the top and basted it before the procedure, I am so glad that I have something to work on right now! Ah....I love it.
I love quilting by hand, and especially at times like this, it is so therapeutic. I am so grateful that I found something I LOVE at an early age.

Big thanks to family and friends for your lovely notes, meals and helping hands. I deeply appreciate you. Although I am enjoying the quilting, watching TV and reading books, this is the type of vacation with pain, so I don't think you should envy me. :)

This is my latest, but don't worry I am doing ok. I am keeping my wit and humor, and my spirit is high. Love you all, and I hope you are enjoying the Christmas season! Talk to you soon. :)

Tutorial~ She Carries Flowers (key holder)

I thought I posted this tutorial on my blog, but now I don't remember if I did or not. I have been getting requests for a tutorial from the people who saw the pictures of the finished key holder on line (probably Sew Mama Sew or Pinterest) but couldn't find the tutorial for it. So, I am sorry if you are tired of seeing this, but if you have been trying to find the tutorial, here you go. :)

I will also list this on my side bar along with my other tutorials.

I have been obsessed with folded fabric flowers and wool flowers lately. I have created a bag and refashioned one of my old cardigans by using the flowers and I LOVE how they turned out.

The love of those flowers didn't end there and I still have a bunch of ideas for them. I am sharing a tutorial for a key holder today and of course it is decorated by fabric folded flower... The key holder is easy to make and you can make a whole bunch of them inexpensively. It is a perfect stocking stuffer, or for a gift exchange with the girlfriends you hang out with.

I hope you will enjoy the tutorial!

{You will need} --- For one key holder

1 --- 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" fabric
1 --- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" fusible fleece
Matching thread
1 Ring

6 --- 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" fabric squares for making a flower
Buttons and beads to decorate

{How to}

1. Fuse the fusible fleece to the fabric. Follow the instructions that came with the fusible fleece. Fold the fabric at the edge of the fusible fleece. Measure and mark the fleece, according to the picture. If you are making more than one, it will be quicker to make a pattern with a piece of paper and trace it.

2. Sew inside of the line, using 1/4" seam. Cut off the excess and cut small triangles around the corners for a nicer finish.

3. Turn the fabric inside out. It is easier to use scissors or a chopstick to push the fabric out. Fold the top in thirds, and press the whole thing with an iron. Stitch around the edge with 1/8" seam.

4. Fold 1/4" from the top, and put a ring on the fabric and fold the fabric over the ring and sew the ring into the key holder.

5. Sew fabric folded flower, beads, and buttons to the key holder. I did it so that the stitches are not showing on the other side. You can see what I did to make the flower here .

I enjoyed coming up with combinations of fabrics, buttons and beads. It is so funny that a slight change can give each key holder a whole new look.
