While some of you lucky ducks are already on summer vacation

some of us are still plugging away!!!

This is my last week of school and grades were already due SO

what to do?

well... you do an art project!!!!

These took us about 2 days to do

BUT that also includes the 2000 degree heat outside to help speed up the drying!!!
So without the fast forward dry time... I would guesstimate 3-4 days to complete :)

A great thing about this project is it is JUST

acrylic paint

black Sharpies (love me some Sharpies)

and

scrap booking paper

it was SUPER EASY

and all the kiddos LOVED it

all of them

Friends~ My very sweet friend Chris gave me the sweetest thank you gift! Most of you know that this school year I did a Peace, Love, & 2nd Grade theme this year in my classroom. Well, Chris and I were out shopping this weekend and we came across this sign! It is so PERFECT!

Check out the fun Peace Sign and the Heart! I lugged that baby into school today and I know people were thinking I was crazy! I am bringing stuff in when I should be putting things away for the summer. Well, I can't help it! I LOVE my classroom and I treat it like another room in my house:) This picture is from Hobby Lobby so if you have one close go snatch one up!

The Well Planned Day - Interview

Recently I was able to interview the creator of the Well Planned Day planners Rebecca Keliher. Although her main planner is written with homeschool moms in mind, the On the Go planner and student planners can be used by anyone. The unique thing about these planners is that even though they are available in either print form or pdf form, they can also be customized on the computer. Print and pdf planners have to be used as written, but with computer software users have even more options.

I fired as many questions as I could think of to get as much information as possible from Rebecca about how her planners work and how people can benefit from using them. Getting and staying organized can be quite a job for any kind of teacher. Some people have found planners to be helpful in keeping themselves organized. I hope the information that Rebecca provided in the interview and on her website will be a help to someone.

Daily 5 Book Study for Kindergarten Teachers

If you are a Kindergarten teacher, then you know that we sit through meetings, required staff developments, and trainings where we hear, "Kindergarten, sorry but this doesn't really apply to you!" Can I get an amen?! We are expert adapters! We hear ideas for other grade levels and think...how can I make this work for my Kinders...am I right?!

I have been using Literacy Work Stations for the past few years in my classroom. I think that Debbie Diller is amazing and I have been content with how stations have been going. The key word being content. My kids always make great progress, but I feel like I have a difficult time keeping up.

I have heard UH-MAZING things about Daily 5! I borrowed a the book from my principal earlier this year and sort of skimmed it. I am thinking that I can do this! I am ready to make the leap! How about you? I think that we can do it together! Now, I will start by saying...I am no Daily 5 expert. I will be learning right along with you. I want this to benefit all Kindergarten teachers who are either already doing D5, or wanting to begin D5 this year. All ideas and resources shared will be able to be used in Kindergarten. YAHOO! No more..."this doesn't really apply to you."

It's a CELEBRATION!!

Happy Monday! YES, that is excitement you hear...probably because I am screaming. LOL. I am so pumped about this week. It is my last week with my students and it's going to be a whirlwind of FUN! But, here's the even better news (for you at least)...

It’s FINALLY here. It is time to celebrate my one year Blogiversary! I can’t believe that it has been one year since I ~~married my computer~~ started this little ole blog. How sweet is that?! This journey has been way more than I ever expected. I have “met” the most AMAZING teachers (a.k.a. YOU!) and have been given some pretty sweet opportunities in the education world.

Singing and Summarizing

Stumped? This week, in my class, we used the four things above in a lesson my students just LOVED! While searching for a new and different way to motivate my kids, I think we hit the nail on the head with this one. Memorial Day Book Pick

Happy Memorial Day! Today I'm remembering with gratitude all of the brave men and women who serve on our behalf along with those heroic men and women and their families who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can be safe and free. My favorite picture book to create awareness about the plight of military children is Sometimes We Were Brave by Pat Brisson.

The author tells Jerome's tale in the first person to lend authenticity and credence to the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a child whose mom (or dad!) goes off to a scary place to serve. Jerome tries to show courage when his mom's away on active duty, and he learns that bravery can have LOTS of different meanings. Sometimes he and his dog Duffy have bad days, sometimes they get surprises, sometimes they have accidents, sometimes they get treats. And sometimes they are afraid!

Check out this book; I think you'll be glad you did.

Product Review: Vocabulary Spelling City

You as the teacher or parent can create spelling or vocabulary lists to help your students, or import the lists already provided within the site.

Premium Membership are available that feature additional benefits like automated student record keeping and access to Premium games and vocabulary content. VocabularySpellingCity currently has 850,000 registered users worldwide, and receives over 53 million page views each month.

These lists can then be used by their students to play a variety of interactive learning games, including HangMouse, Unscramble, Word Search, and Premium Crossword, plus writing practice activities. I've used this site with my middle school students last year, and I currently use it with my second grade classroom this year. They love it!

Vocabulary, spelling, matching, and other tools are available for many subjects through middle school, and allow a student to learn utilizing the same system for many years. My students love when they can interact with the site via our SMART Board or even when I simply pass around our wireless mouse, letting different children have a turn with the engaging applications that Vocabulary City has to offer.

From a student's perspective, the games are fun, challenging, and provide a level of instant gratification that is not always available when studying. I was a bit surprised when Mark at PlanetShoes reached out to me last week to do a product review for their Alegria shoes. After all, this is a blog created by and intended for teachers; how do shoes really relate? Mark explained to me that PlanetShoes is an online shoe retailer with a focus on eco-friendly brands and products, as well as some of the biggest names in the footwear industry.

Mark sent me a pair of the slingback sandals to test out. At first, to be honest, I was a bit skeptical with getting shoes from an online site. They are also very durable and easy to clean- a must for every teacher.

But the true test....can they withstand the daily grind of a teacher? Sure they can look good, plenty of shoes look good. But I'm on my feet from 6am til about 7pm, and I know how to wear a shoe out. Check this out: their website describes a patented interlocking footbed featuring "latex, memory foam, and cork". Memory foam- are you kidding me? Memory foam is well known to be one of the most comfortable inventions ever created. And now it is in a sandal? They put memory foam in my shoe. Amazing. That means that the sandal was made just for me! It's like Cinderella's glass slipper, my sandal only knows one foot - but it's not made out of glass, it's made out of memory foam.

End of the Year Play

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

I only have two and a half more days of school. It's unreal to me. I don't think I'll believe it until I'm sleeping in and watching Live with Kelly!!

I don't know about you, but at the end of the year, I tend to run out of curriculum. We've completed all of our Language Arts anthologies, vocabulary, phonics, grammar, etc., as well as all of our Math Topics. We've also reviewed. And reviewed. And reviewed.

And, truthfully, we're all a little tired.

So I like to put on a play.

I inherited The Three Nanny Goats Gruff from one of my very first partners. It's modeled after the Three Billy Goats Gruff except that this one has GIRLS as the superheroes. I love it. Not to mention, the biggest nanny goat is named Big Bertha Lee. That name alone could scare a troll.

My new partner and I split the cost of t-shirts and baseball hats for costumes . . . and then some parent volunteers donated more time and money into creating something out of them. We also had two parents create the backdrop.

It doesn't sound like I did anything.

Hmmmm.

That's odd because I always feel a little stressed about the play.

This can't be right.

Let me think.

I am the director. I say that with a lah-di-dah voice. The DIGH - REC- TOR.

I direct 32 ~~hyper~~ ~~crazy~~ ~~insane~~ talented little first graders.

It's as easy as pie.

I have also worked at changing the script that came with this.

The bare bones are there, but I added a little flair. Out of necessity. And just for fun.

Our rehearsals went great this year. My kids were READY for the performance in front of the parents on Friday.

AND THEN . . . we had a little snafu.

Open House Came and Went!

We work so hard, all year, for this one night!

Thoughts and planning and ~~sweat and tears~~ hard-work to show off how much we've learned!

It's so worth it though when you see the bright smiles of your students and the pride that they have in their learning! The sweet words from the parents don't hurt either ;)

We just had our Open House last week.

We displayed our creative writing, math, science, art, you name it!

Media Literacy- Let's Create a Comic

Kids love comics. They love reading them and the love creating them. Comics are especially great for English Language Learners and students with special education needs! To end off the school year having some fun my class and I have been creating comics using Bitstrips for Schools. This is an online comic creator program that creates a virtual classroom for you and your students.

Our Poet-Tree

I LOVE displaying my students' work, and I LOVE creating cute bulletin boards to display their work on. I think fantastic work deserves a fantastic display.

This is our Poet-Tree. My students have been hard at work this week adding new poems to their poetry portfolios. With so many boys in my classroom, I have quite a few reluctant writers this year. For that reason, I decided to leave poetry until the end of the year. Now that many of them have increased confidence in their writing skills, they have been more open to exploring the various forms of poetry. In Need of INSPIRATION??

Good morning, good morning, and good morning to you and you and you! J Are you out of school yet? I have one more week to go. I cannot believe how fast this year has just flown by. I must say that the last day of school will be bitter sweet. I just love the characters in my class this year. I have 13 girls and 9 boys, which adds up to a tad bit of drama…ya think? J Seriously, they are like little adults in five year olds bodies. They have the funniest conversations and they get my humor, which I love.

I don’t know about you, but I have been stuck in next year mode for at least two weeks. What theme will I do? What changes do I want make to my room? What books should I read this summer? Oh the decisions! The dilemmas! The drama! J

I think I am sticking with the jungle theme for one more year but I want to incorporate brighter colors. I’m definitely a bright colors kinda girl. J This week I thought it would be fun to post classroom pictures from other bloggers. I am in need in inspiration and boy did I find some. I am so excited about next year! I think each year I get better as a teacher. I learn more, try new things. I consider myself a life learner, which I think makes me a good teacher. Not much scares me because I know the answer is somewhere. Probably on one of your awesome blogs!!
