For the past three years we've been handcrafting "Comfort Scarves" hats and other items to keep the homeless, children, veteran homeless and those in need warm. This year we have developed into a nondenominational ministry that continues to keep people warm and feed them.

The military/veterans and civilian program has been created at the American Legion Post 113 in Meridian, Idaho. Through their generosity we make meals for anyone needing them and give handcrafted items for free.

Our policy is: No questions asked for those that come.

Due to the high demand of people needing to be feed we are asking for your help, please. The video will give you more details.

"We at Teaching Hands in Boise, Idaho and American Legion Post 113 in Meridian, Idaho are serious when we welcome everyone into the American Legion." stated Williams. Both non-profits understand the urgency of families and individuals needing a stable and safe environment to socialize.

Williams was elated to hear this comment from a volunteer teenager, "This is so rewarding in helping other people," stated K.T. while he placed the prepared food on the table. Besides assisting in the kitchen, K. T. took it upon himself to walk to the Meridian Food Bank (with adult supervision) to let their clients know we have a meal for them.

There are other teens that are responsible for setting up and tearing down tables and chairs. One of them is a young man, Phoenix. He's mentally disabled but you don’t see it stopping him. "Phoenix has a huge heart," said Williams. Phoenix needs to be a part of our group and Teaching Hands volunteers enthusiastically accept him. Williams learned through his family how to interact with him. He was given the duties of setting up chairs, greeting people, and coloring.

Other life skills for Phoenix are learning how to socialize and when to take a break from all the activity.

On Thursday, December 15, 2011, please come and receive a free hot meal from 5-7:30 pm at the American Legion, 22 W. Broadway, Meridian, Idaho. In addition to hot meals, the volunteers of Teaching Hands are giving away free handcrafted items (that they have made) to give comfort and warmth to those in need. Phoenix's mom, Angel, will draw the designs on the cards and then Phoenix will color in the pictures. These cards will range in content from thanking our veterans for their service to giving someone encouragement. Also, family members bring DVD's (family appropriate) for everyone to view while they are participating. We do this every first and third Thursday of the month.

"Thank you for doing this," stated a veteran who attended a dinner. "You’re welcome. We'll be here until we are no longer needed,” Williams stated. She continued with, "We both know that isn't happening anytime soon."

Teaching Hands in Boise, Idaho and American Legion Post 113 in Meridian, Idaho have partnered together to give a free meal on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 5-7:30 pm at the American Legion (22 W. Broadway, Meridian, ID). Included are free handcrafted hats and scarves from the volunteers of Teaching Hands to give comfort and warmth to those in need. They will also demonstrate the needle arts for those interested. All volunteers that want to drop off a food item or handcrafted item are always welcome.

Networking and gathering resources is a pleasure for Teaching Hands. As is the gift of gab with those that like to socialize.

Williams extended the Teaching Hands program to the Meridian Food Bank when she learned their shelves are low on food. Through partnering with the American Legion Post 113, their doors are open to everyone during the hours and dates stated above. "Some left overs are given to those that attend to take home to their families." Williams said.

One veteran's help years before Teaching Hands

The first day I met Jeff, I wondered, "where have you been all my life." Don't let his quiet exterior fool you. Being an analytical person Jeff observed before he spoke. His golden tan covered some of his 6'1" body frame. Included were those rippling muscles throughout most of his body. This told you he was strong. Not so with his insides -- fighting for his life.

One warm fall afternoon Jeff and I took a walk. I chatted away about a website (not Les Bois Arts) that need some help - content. (This was before experts told you the importance of the written word.) Around thirty seconds or so went by when my six sense kicked in. Looked behind me to see Jeff way back there. Did an about face picked up my pace to see if he was alright. Reached Jeff and found him frozen, staring at me.

"Are you okay?"

"Ma, told me I would write someday."

Those words were music to my ears. We continued to walk and talk. The conversation had me firing questions at him as though I was a machine gun. Jeff stated, "Slow down." Flashed him a grin cause, I needed to catch my breath.

The walk continued however, the talk came to an abrupt stop. At that time a silly thing called a computer was not in Jeff's vocabulary let alone in his life. Jeff showed me that electronics will not be in his way from his writing. He was the fastest learner I ever had with a PC and Macintosh.

Being a morning person helped me to get my writing accomplished. During this time my character creating and dialog was in bloom. There are more parts to a book than being a script writer. Jeff was a night owl he did the editing. He also, added in the scenes and taught me how.

Jeff and I would joke about our past lives. Added to this are the things we did when we were younger. When Jeff turned nineteen he was drafted into the war -- Vietnam. All of his body parts came back home with him and two Bronze Stars. Something else chose to come back to the states too. Agent Orange and another nasty little bugger called Heptitus C.

Jeff's battle with his "little buddy" took his life on February 13, 2003. Our written material is on hold at this very moment. At the time we did not know, readers and publishers are not interested in a soap-opera book. Already working on a different angle for our hard work to come to print. There is another work in progress that came to Jeff in a dream. Before he went home, Jeff, made sure I had the outline to the book.

Another important task for Jeff was to help one vet.

In the beginning the written word was a daunting task without Jeff. The pain seems to have lesson when most of my time is spent with my fingers typing away and a "cup of joe" by my side. There are those times while my fingers are flying through the keyboard I wonder, if Jeff is near by. Some times I believe so, the delete key is erasing something before I've had time to read it.

Teaching Hands in Boise and American Legion Post 113 in Meridian (22 W. Broadway)have partnered to give meals on the 1st and 3rd Thursday from 5-7:30pm. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113 of Meridian has been gracious in volunteering baking goods for the dinner.

"Anyone is welcome to attend. No questions asked," stated Williams. During tomorrow's dinner, (Thursday 17, 2011) of beef vegetable soup we are giving free handcrafted items of hats, scarves and children's sweaters. There will be volunteers willing to demonstrate to anyone interested the needle arts: knitting, crocheting and loom knitting. All of us at Teaching Hands loves to socialize and help where we can. See you tomorrow evening!

“We care about our children, veterans and families and we understand there are veterans in need, suffering and the homeless situation,” Williams said.

Please come to our meet-up at the American Legion on 22 W. Broadway & Meridian (corner) in Meridian, Idaho; starting October 20th a Thursday. We will meet the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month unless there is a holiday. (They are behind the new city hall.) We have chosen an open house gathering from 4-8pm.

During our first meeting we are serving soup & sandwiches to those attending & walk-ins. Since this is our first one we don't know how many people will be showing up. We're using the first come first serve approach.

We need volunteers to help with serving, prepping the food and clean-up. The students or volunteers are more than welcome to bring donated food items for the sandwiches and other foods to go with them.

This will also be a time for orientation about Teaching Hands. Volunteers will be need to pass out scarves or create a card. We need every knitter, crocheter, loom knitting and sewer on board to make scarves. Right now we tens-of-thousands handcrafted scarves. Every aspect of public affairs in needed too.
