Jenny has been doing a LOT of reading lately, and she’s getting pretty good at it. I decided to videotape her reading for our Truth in the Tinsel Advent reading yesterday without her knowing I was doing it.

The kids were dressed up in “nice” clothes on Sunday, so I thought I’d take advantage of the Christmas tree at church and get a nice Christmas picture of the two of them.

David wasn’t in the mood…

We had some help trying to get David to smile…

And we still ended up with a Grinch.

Intentional Christmas Activities

In the chaos of the holiday seasons, we often lose sight of what we are celebrating. In order to combat the chaos and keep Christ in Christmas, we have some intentional Christmas activities that we’ve added to our everyday life to keep our focus on the true Reason for the season.

Truth in the Tinsel {Advent activities}:

We started the Truth in the Tinsel on the 1st, spending some time each day reading part of the Christmas story from the Bible and making an ornament to go along with the portion of Scripture we were reading. Last weekend, we “fell behind” and instead of playing “catch up” this week, I decided to just hit on the “big” topics that we missed and merge them with the ones in the week or so we have left before our Christmas chaos begins.

Christmas Countdown Chain:

When we were in Michigan for Thanksgiving, the kids spent some time making a Christmas Countdown Chain with Grandma. Each day {or as often as we remember}, they get to take a chain off the link, giving them a visual way to see how close we are getting to Christmas.

Happy Birthday, Jesus {birthday party}:

Each year we have a birthday party for Jesus, helping us to remember that HE is the REASON for the SEASON. Part of our birthday celebration includes “buying” Jesus a birthday present. This year, we picked out some animals from the World Vision Catalog to “give to Jesus.”

Christmas Caroling:

Our neighborhood association organized a Christmas caroling trip to the nursing home that is across the main road from our subdivision. We had a great time sharing our Christmas cheer with the residents of the nursing home as we caroled up and down the hallways and in the dining hall.

Piano Recital:

Jenny participated in her first piano recital, and it was a Christmas-themed recital. Her teacher is also a believer, and she chose songs for her students that reflected the true Reason for the season - Jesus. It was a wonderful time of reflection and celebration.

{My Thoughts}:

Honestly, this book was probably more meaningful to me as a mom than it was for my kids. Like the little boy in the story, Jenny is about to turn 5 {less than a month from now}, and she has become very interested in money lately. This book is one that we will definitely be sharing together over the next several months as we start talking about how to manage money and consider the option of giving her an allowance.

I would highly recommend that families read this book together when children begin to have their “own” money. It presents an excellent plan for managing money as well as showing children the benefits of saving, spending, and giving.

Christmas Shopping with the World Vision Catalog

As a family, we make it a point to look beyond our own wants/need each Christmas season. We look for a way to give Jesus a birthday present that has nothing to do with meeting our own desires but everything to do with blessing others.

One year we gave a gift of money to some missionary friends. Another year we collected our loose change and gave it to the local homeless shelter.

This year, we’ve decided to buy some farm animals to give Jesus for His birthday. {Matthew 25.35-36}

The farm animals that we are buying are going to be given to a family in a third-world country through the ministry of World Vision.

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Jenny & David are excited to “go shopping” in the World Vision catalog to pick out some animals to buy for a family who needs our help. They have been looking through the catalog for a few weeks, and today we are going to count up the money in their piggy banks to determine how much they are able to give to Jesus for His birthday.

Wait… it’s the end of the week already?? Where’d this week go??

We got lots of snow on Tuesday afternoon/evening, and while the area schools had a snow day on Wednesday, we did some math and reading worksheets.

Thursday we started our Truth in the Tinsel Advent activities, reading from Isaiah 9.2-7. We made candle ornaments to remind us that Jesus is the LIGHT of the World!

Unschooling: Educational TV

We aren’t really unschoolers, but there are definitely days in our homeschool where we do unschooling. Last week, we had one of those days…

We were all feeling a bit under the weather {fall colds}, so I decided we’d turn on the TV. Normally that means lots of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, but on this particular day, I decided that we needed to be a bit more educational {read: MMC is great for toddlers/preschoolers, but not so educational for 1st graders}, so I turned on PBS Kids.

It’s not just enough to sit your kids in front of an educational show on the TV, though. That’s not really “school.”

We all cuddled together in my bed and as the various shows came on {Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train, and Super Why}, I made an intentional point to get the kids involved in what the characters were learning on the show and asked questions about the show when it was over.

One of the things we learned turned out to be quite valuable in the days to come… we learned that we need to cover our mouths with our arms when we sneeze or cough in order to stop the spread of germs while watching Sid the Science Kid. Handy advice for a family with three sickies!

Handprint Turkeys - Thanksgiving Place Cards

Since we had a short week of school {read: two days} and we did “unschooling” for most of it, I thought I’d share a craft we did this week in lieu of the normal Friday recap post.

Yesterday, we gathered together with family for a bountiful feast to celebrate Thanksgiving. One of our family “traditions” is to have place cards at each at setting for the major holiday meals {Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas}. Since Jenny has been able to write, we’ve often “volunteered” to provide the place cards for these meals, and yesterday was no exception.

We used the handprints that we’d traced earlier this month for our Thankfulness Tree to create Handprint Turkeys.

Jenny and I worked together to cut out the handprint turkeys.

I cut out “beaks” and “wattles” and pulled the bag of googly eyes out of the kids’ craft box.

Jenny used my “master list” to write each person’s name on a handprint turkey to create the place cards.

Here’s a sample of the finished Handprint Turkey Place Card - each guest’s name would go where “Happy Thanksgiving” is on this one.

All 19 Handprint Turkey Place Cards are finished and ready for Thanksgiving Dinner!!

In our homeschool this week… {11.18.11}

I’m starting to figure out that getting three “solid” days of homeschooling in each week is a “good week” for us. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays seem to work the best for “solid” days of homeschool. Now, that doesn’t mean we don’t “do school” or “learn” the other four days of the week. Those just seem to be the best days to do worksheets and “formal” school time.

This week, we’ve had lots of “snuggle” time, watching “educational” TV {including fun videos on the What’s in the Bible? blog} while cuddling together in Mommy & Daddy’s bed. A few colds have affected our energy levels this week, but we’re all on the mend now.

In other news…

--> Jenny finished her AWANA book this week!! It has been such a blessing to be able to work with her this fall on memorizing God’s Word and watching her hide in her heart. She has such a great memory {I think she might be even better with memorization than I was at her age}, and I love listening to her recall the verses she’s learned as she recites them each week. After Thanksgiving break, she’ll work on reviewing all her verses that she’s learned this fall.

--> We’re getting close to Jenny’s first piano recital!! She has started learning her Christmas music {she is actually reading music now!!} and is working on getting it ready for the recital on December 11th.

--> Last Saturday morning, I made some changes to our office/school room. Jenny’s desk was replaced with a “big kid” desk {the one I used as a homeschool student 20+ years ago}. It’s been a good transition for both of us!

In our homeschool this week… {11.11.11}

We started off this week strong, but ended up “forgetting” to do school in the middle of the week. We’re back at it this morning, though.

At the end of last week, I printed off a “color by letter” turkey I’d found on Pinterest, and Jenny got right to work.

Saturday is “Game Day” at our house… we’re big University of Michigan football fans, and the kids like to get in on the action {for about five minutes until they get bored}.

One of Jenny’s favorite things to do is to find things in her Bible. Once she finds whatever she was looking for, she often tries to read the verses that she is looking up. Here she was reading about Daniel’s interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams.

David likes to be like his big sister, so he can often be found mimicking her actions. Sunday afternoon, he pulled out her piano books and began to “play” the songs.

We’ve loved adding to our Thankfulness Tree each day… it’s getting full of leaves!

Did you see the post this week about Jenny learning the Books of the New Testament?

She did SO well!!

Jenny & David are truly best friends, and it is such a blessing to be their Mommy! Last night I found them cuddled together in “Daddy’s chair” as they watched some cartoons before supper.

Jenny is a budding artist, as I mentioned last week. Any chance to draw, color, or create, and she is all over it! Here she is drawing a picture of Creation to go along with our devotion that we had just read together.

Though our homeschool may not be as “scheduled” as I think it should be, it works well for us in our season of life, and Jenny is soaking up all the new information like a sponge. I love her love for learning, and I love seeing the “light come on” when she “gets” new concepts!
