Frontiers Foundation is a federally chartered non-profit charitable organization that has been working on community development projects in First Nations communities in the far north of Canada since 1968.

Our programme brings international groups of volunteers to small, usually isolated, First Nations communities to assist on a variety of community development projects with most of the volunteers working in community schools as tutors and teaching assistants. Our volunteers help to bring badly needed skills to the schools and often work with special needs children and children with FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)

The volunteers are required to volunteer for the full school year, from late August and early September through to the end of June. All of the volunteer costs within Canada including travel to and from the project, food and living expenses, and medical insurance are covered. Volunteers from outside of Canada are required to cover their travel to and from Canada.

This is a truly unique opportunity to live in another culture and learn about life in the far north of Canada while also gaining practical experience working in a school. We are looking for motivated people with a strong and genuine desire to get involved in the community and in the culture.

Online ELT Teacher Presenter Wanted

The British Council / IATEFL Harrogate Online Project is looking to recruit someone to join the team of live online presenters for the live broadcast from the IATEFL Conference in Harrogate, April 2010.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of the Harrogate Online Team and play a role in our live online conference coverage.

What is Harrogate Online?
The Harrogate Online Project is a British Council / IATEFL partnership established to provide online conference coverage of the Annual IATEFL Conference.

Now in its fourth year, IATEFL Online returns in April 2010 to coincide with the 44th Annual IATEFL Conference in Harrogate, UK (7th to 11th April 2010).

Harrogate Online will showcase the best of the conference and provide live interactive web coverage for remote participants around the globe with video interviews with presenters, recorded sessions, moderated forums and much more.

About the role
This year the Harrogate Online Project will be streaming a live online video broadcast each day of the conference. A small team of presenters will work in front of camera throughout the conference to bring lively coverage from a studio at the conference venue.

The successful applicant will form part of this live online presenter team. The four-person team will head up the live online broadcast of the conference by interviewing presenters and conference delegates each day of the conference.

Experience / Requirements
The successful applicant should possess a sound knowledge of current issues in ELT, excellent communication skills, an adventurous attitude and be able to demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure. It´s not necessary to have TV or media experience.

About the package
The winner will have their conference fee, flights and connecting travel, hotel accommodation and subsistence paid for. In addition, the successful applicant will be paid £500. The winner will need to arrive in Harrogate on 5 April for a briefing; and will depart from the UK on 12 or 13 April.

The high 2009 Canadian dollar and Swine Flu motivated many international students to stay at home or choose non-North America destinations.

All Canadian ESL schools experienced a decrease of students compared to last year. We have already witnessed a number of ESL school bankruptcies and expect more over the winter months. Many ESL schools have slashed teacher salaries, increased student-teacher ratios, fired senior staff and replaced them with unqualified or minimum qualified new staff, stopped supplying books and other cost reduction service cuts.

During 2009 we continued to see English students from Spain. Many utilized the special overseas study scholarship available to Spanish students. The rise of the Euro against both the Canadian and USA dollars has motivated some Europeans to try North American Schools and the new lower costs via the currency exchanges.

With small increases of the Brazilian Real, Korean Won, Mexican Peso and Chinese RMB we expect to see more students next summer.

More students means more teaching jobs in Canada and the USA. If you can get a job and be paid fairly for your qualifications and experience.

These example scammer e-mails have been received:

- your PRICE per source word in Euros - please be ready for a long time partnership.

Crooks of this type can get away with it for a long time before being caught in the act because they use a number of plausible addresses and a number of Internet Service Providers all at the same time. Even so, we can try and track them down by cross-checking.

If you are one of the people who have been swindled by this kind of crook, please do not hesitate in sending us the headers of the first message received "from" GoTranslators (in blue below) when you were in contact with them and any other details which might help investigators to prevent these crooks from doing any more damage (please e-mail luc@gotranslators.com).

Using the header, you can also form an initial impression of the seriousness of the request made and, potentially, guard against any hidden attempt at fraud on the part of your correspondent. It is worth checking the address and its actual origin in order to compare the address with what your correspondent tells you about himself. In IT jargon, this is known as a "WhoIs" request.

Fake Jobs Harvest info for Identity Theft and Advance Fee Fraud

This is a warning to all teachers who are looking for international teaching positions. We have been receiving a series of phishing emails advertizing fake jobs. These jobs are advertised as being in the UK, USA and Canada.

One of the fake jobs is advertised as private teaching for kids at a huge salary, one said and I quote: "Monthly Salary 6,500 GBP (Great British Pounds) and medical allowance, and free accommodation, with room facilities, equip with Fridge, TV, land line, free internet connection and kitchen ultility". They ask"contact me with your current resume and full information about you".

This is one teachers experience with a fake job:

I was contacted for a teaching job in England. The contactor even supported his claims by having his so-called lawyer that helped him immigrate to England to book my flight and arrange a visa. I was given a contract and a revised contract. The addresses checked out. I was contacted by phone many times. But things got weird. I allowed the potential employer to contact me by messenger. He began to harass me everytime I was online wanting money for this visa.

Upon contacting the UK border agency I was informed that the requested documents and forms were not legitimate. Watch out for this one. To read more details:

Another Fake Teaching Job Scam Alert:

The scammers are using the resume and CV information to assemble enough details to switch mail addresses for bank accounts and credit cards. They will have new credit cards issued in your name and sent to a new address. They will max out all the new credit cards with out you knowing anything. Your first warning will be when they drain your bank account and leave you with zero. They then switch the new credit card addresses back to your current address so you will have no money and anywhere from 15,000 to 50,000 dollars in credit card debt. This process will make you look like the thief and will take years and lawyers to clear your name and avoid criminal charges.

The Peace Boat creates a unique environment in which people can live, learn and relax together while visiting some of the most fascinating regions on earth. During each voyage, Peace Boat organizes a range of educational activities, including language classes, peace education workshops, lectures, and cultural programmes. The themes of these activities link Peace Boat’s fields of work with contemporary issues in the countries we visit.

In order to achieve a global culture with values reflecting a genuine desire for peace and a rejection of violence, peace education must be more widely promoted and access to it increased.

Since our foundation in 1983, Peace Boat has been active in peace education through the organization of educational voyages, and study and exchange programmes all over the world.

On each voyage, Guest Educators are invited onboard to give lectures about the history, culture, and contemporary issues of the countries that Peace Boat visits, as well as present on global justice issues including human rights, peace education, the environment and sustainable development.

Participants can take part actively in lectures, workshops and discussions with specialists from diverse learning backgrounds, as well as exchanging ideas and opinions with members of the Global University and International Student programmes.

Sports, music, dance and art transcend language and cultural barriers onboard a Peace Boat voyage. The outdoor sports deck is a venue for basketball, soccer, karate, volleyball, tai-chi and also a rehearsal space for dance or musical performances. Art and craft groups form on each voyage, often working to create something to be presented in a port of call or used as part of an advocacy campaign. The open-air decks are also spaces to watch the roll of the ocean, take a swim in one of the pools or chat and meet with other participants.

Teaching in China does not have to be a big mystery or leap of faith. These teaching positions are at a normal professional Foreign Language Public High School.

School location is 100 kilometers from Beijing in a metropolitan city.

The Foreign Language Public High School was re-started in 1964 after the Cultural revolution.

The school started with 300 students and now has about 2,000 students.

The school teaches six major languages: English, French, Japanese, German, Spanish and Russian.

The teachers residence is located on the school grounds. Residences include bachelor apartments, one bedroom, and two bedrooms. Furnished teacher residences include cable TV, internet, telephone, refrigerator, gas top burners, microwave, air conditioner, tables and chairs and bedroom furniture.

The teacher's residences are near to two large shopping centers. One is a huge four-floor supermarket the other is a large department store. All local fruits, dairy, vegtables and meats can be purchased at the supermarket. Teachers can walk to this shopping area in ten minutes.

There are Walmart and Carefor Department stores located about 40 minutes by bus for most of the international imported products.

The public bus system stops right in front of the school gate. Movies are six bus stops away about 15 minutes from the residence. The large public park is also about 15 minutes away from the residence. A famous cultural area containing many antique stores is 30 minutes from the school.

The weather is very similar to Toronto with all four seasons however the winters are a little warmer.

This day school operates from 7:50 AM to 4:30 PM. Every student has a class schedule which includes breaks. All basic teaching occurs between 7:50 AM and 4:30 PM.

Regular teaching is based on a 25 hour, six day week schedule to average 100 hours per month. Overtime starts at hour 101.

There are two contract terms of either six or twelve months. The basic salary of 6,000 RMB per 100 hours is for the six month contract. Twelve months contracts pay 7,000 RMB for each 100 hour teaching month.

The six month contracts only covers accident insurance. The twelve month contracts include accident and standard Chinese Teachers health insurance.

Holidays are the same as regular Chinese teachers and includes all national holidays.

Oneway Airfare is paid for six month contracts and return for twelve month contracts.

Sports facilities includes basketball, soccer, pingpong and jogging trails.

The cafeteria features Northern Chinese cuisine includes Chinese breads, chichen, pork, beef, fish, rice and soups and vegetarian meals. Teachers are given lunch coupons for any days teaching occurs in both morning and afternoon.

Teachers can take courses in Chinese language, history, culture and the arts. When in China teachers can travel and view 5,000 years of history and the more recent fastest growingeconomy in the world.
