Teagan, Isla and I surprised Daddy with a Valentine's gift via a photo shoot on an old horse farm in South Carolina. I loved the rustic barn, 1950's Ford pickup and lane. Here are some of the best shots from the day.

The photographer was awesome! He kept trying to get Isla to drop her favorite snuggle toy but I think it is perfect in the shot...what better way to remember her love for this dog in years to come?

Happy Birthday Mom

Hello everyone! The girls are just about to wake up so I have just a quick post to share this morning. Last week we celebrated what would have been my mother's 70th birthday by having a mini family reunion at Walt Disney World. It was a magical week. I think Brian and I had an even better time than the kids, if that is at all possible! I can't wait to share those pictures with you this weekend!

The thing about Disney is that it is darn near impossible to find a quiet, lonely spot to reflect - though I tried on mom's birthday wandering in and out of villages in the Magic Kingdom. But it is also true that Disney makes it tough to be sad surrounded by so much happiness and joy. I figure that's probably just the way Mo would have wanted us to spend the day. I can just hear her telling me to have a good time and stop being so silly.

I miss you more than I can say, Mom. You are in my thoughts so often. I still catch myself reaching for the phone to call you and tell you some funny thing the girls have done. Lately I am able to remember the many ways you made us smile and laugh. What a joy and blessing to have been your little Sooz.

Let God Have His Say

Before the sun makes its debut I sit at my computer, reading Ann Voskamp’s A Blogger’s Prayer.

I am no longer my own blogger, but Thine, O Lord…

Each day I am humbled by this calling, which has become my passion. I started as a stay at home mother sharing simple, sweet pictures of my babies with my first follower: Mom. And I remember well the initial post where I felt God prompting me to say more. Open my heart. Be vulnerable in black and white … all in His Name.

It was a terrifying step. I battled with feelings of not being qualified. Who was I to try to influence? Would anyone read it? My friends might think I’d become a Jesus freak. What if I share and no one reads it? I’d be embarrassed if it turned out to be nothing more than horribly bad writing.

My doubt, so carefully considered in the beginning, doesn’t matter now. Because God qualifies the called and though I cherish every reader, I write for Him these days. In my little corner of blogosphere, my Lord whispers His words softly to me as I sit down to write. And I say a grateful, “Use me Lord.”

Use me to share a devotion with that reader in China. Open the heart of those people I can see visited my blog from United Arab Emirates. France. India. Costa Rica. Because perhaps they don’t have a mega church down the street? Or a women’s bible study to join. It could be sharing their faith…or exploring it, is a dangerous occupation. Protect them God. Let them know You love them.

Use me God, to share the dire needs of children in poverty around the world. So they can see Jesus. Have fresh water to drink. Shoes. A vegetable crop. Compassion.

The blessings have been all mine on this journey. Stronger relationships with those I had. Being asked by a girlfriend who didn’t go to church if we could start a bible study. New friendships around the globe. A sense of pride that I am doing what I can to make this world better. To grow God’s Kingdom instead of keeping the treasure of salvation to myself. To change the life of a family, one child at a time.

Sweet friend, my question for you today is this: If you could change your corner of the world today…would you?

Take Out: How can you use your sphere of influence? It can be something as local as hosting a bible study, volunteering for a non-profit organization, starting a fundraising effort for a group in need or raising awareness. Pray the bold prayer asking God to use you and your life to change this world for the better.

Prayer:

God, we pray that you open our minds and hearts to what your will is for our lives. That we would have the courage to greet your calling so we may influence the lives of those around us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Waking Up on The Wrong Side of a New Year

The nurse slipped out the room just as I woke up. Quiet murmurs in the hallway. The hum of the IV machine near my head. My twenty month old baby sleeping, finally, in the crib next to me...

And I thought of my One Word for 2103: Consistency.

The first week of the year had started with promise and plans.

I would seek out my God and Savior on a moment-by-moment basis like a breath of sweet air that would revive me.

I would be at church each week to learn, love and do life with the hearts of those I absolutely cherish.

I would eat well, exercise and make my body strong again.

I would write. Often. Listening for His soft, still voice amongst the chaos of our social media filled world.

I would meet deadlines. Because I love writing for God. And I don't want to miss any opportunity to share what He is placing on my humble, grateful heart.

I would be a present, loving wife and mother - not at the bottom of my to do list, but at the top...somehow balancing all of this life God has blessed me with...

But then...then, my baby. Her eye swollen shut. My heart beat faster as her doctor mentioned words that included hospital, brain, serious.

Now, days later I am here. With my baby in this hospital room.

Why God? I don't understand. Last year? Well, last year...and yes, the year before...they were unbelievably hard. I thought....I imagined THIS year might be different. Joyful. Full of promise. Celebrating all the good. Getting to a point where remembering doesn't leave me crushed. Breathless.

And God, how can I be consistent during this current upheaval in our days? I am missing church, my computer and eating well. It's too much. This is the exact opposite of consistency, Lord!

Fear gripped my heart that night in the hospital. Had I just imagined the severe bacterial infection had spread a bit further down her cheek? Was the pink on her "good" eye just the result of no sleep...or would tomorrow morning reveal a new set of problems which would include dwindling options for antibiotics she could take? What if we hadn't caught it early enough...did it have time to spread to her brain?

Be joyful in hope. Patient in affliction. Constant in prayer. Romans 12:12

God whispered, Have you forgotten Romans 12:12?

Ahh. My life verse.

I felt His peace wash over me. And He asked me to consider that the Consistency he has asked me to focus on this year can also be applied to constant faith. Persistent prayer. Unrelenting optimism in the face of adversity.

And then?

Then He showed me these things in the physical sense played out by courageous, precious children and parents facing serious illness.

You see, Isla and I made friends in the halls of that children's hospital. Little Lorelai. Troy. And Lucas. I was forever transformed by their bravery. Their optimism and the way they and their parents begin and end each day with faith. Hope. Prayer.

Would you pray for them today? These next days, weeks and months are critical for them.

Lorelai is a sweet little redhead like Isla. She was under strict contact restrictions so she couldn't leave her room while we were there but her infectious smile and laugh were a joy. She is Teagan's age and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia this year. If you are on Facebook you can follow her daily updates via the Love for Lorelai team!

Troy is a brave, shy boy who has been in hospital since the first part of Christmas. He's just started his fight against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He, Lorelai and Lucas are all buddies. Lucas is 21 months old, just a month older than Isla. He has big gorgeous eyes and loves to ride the wagons up and down the hospital halls with his mom, dad and nana. He is back at home this week and is fighting Bilateral Wilms Tumors on both his kidneys. You can follow his story at Lucas Nieman on CaringBridge.

I have one more prayer request for a most treasured friend, Jennifer. She is my next door neighbor, Beth Moore bible study leader, walking buddy and just the most amazing person ever. It breaks my heart that her mom very nearly passed away this week from diverticulitis. Her colon has been removed and we are in fervent prayer that she will not get an infection as she heals. Please remember Brenda in your prayers.

I hope you and yours have a blessed Friday today! Brian has been traveling tons. Earlier this week he was in California and tomorrow he leaves for England and Ireland. This explains the lack of posting. I am one tired mama trying to catch up on the house after our hospital stay as well as multiple doctor's visits this week. We'll miss my sweets but are happy he'll get to see his family on the last leg of the trip!

A New Way to Pray - Part 2

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Thanks for joining me for Part 2 of A New Way to Pray. In Part 1 we covered the A.C.T.S. method of praying. But I wanted a way to focus and get to the heart of what I wanted to say in supplication without skimping on adoration, confession, and thanksgiving.

Recently, another blogger gave me just the means to do so. I am sorry to say I can't credit her here as I've been unable to trace that source I found a few weeks ago. Therefore, this idea is by no means original, yet I pray it will energize and inspire you to revamp your prayer time.

In a nutshell, you will need to break out your Supplication prayer into topics. Then, each day of the week cover a different topic. I've included my list as an example:

Sunday - Prayers for ministry including my church and our missionaries, the ministries of my She Speaks sister's and my own, Encouragement Cafe, Proverbs 31 Ministries and more.

Mondays - Prayers for my family near and far. In depth prayer for my children, our parenting and preparing them to live in this world, not of it.

Tuesdays - Prayers for resources including fresh water, food, medical supplies and shelter for everyone in this world with a specific mindfulness of the blessings God has showered upon our family.

Wednesdays - Prayers for friends and their requests. Prayers for those at church on our prayer list. Prayers requests received on my blog and through Facebook.

Thursdays - Prayers for the poor, mentally and physically ill. Specific prayer for our Compassion International family: Pascaline, Dahling, Elibie, Bethlehelm and Jimmi. Prayer for Compassion, Smaritans Purse, our local food banks and shelters.

Fridays - Prayers for our country and its leadership. Prayers for our international community, their governments, peace and healing. Peace.Peace. And more peace among all people.

Saturday - Prayers for the oppressed. Specific prayer for those living in countries where practicing their faith is dangerous. More prayer for missionaries and their families, outreach organization working on behalf of those in highly vulnerable and extreme situations.

A New Way To Pray - Part 1

Happy New Year! I pray you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. I am so excited about 2013! In just a week or two the new blog will be rolling out with giveaways, online bible studies and more. I will be focusing on my One Word: Consistency. I can't wait to see what God does in all of our lives this year. Have you settled on One Word for 2013?

I've been thinking about a new way to pray. For a long time I've used the A.C.T.S. Prayer. Are you familiar with it? It is basically an acronym outlining a guide for personal prayer.

A - ADORATION - I begin my personal time with God by praising and worshiping Him. This is a time to recognize His might, greatness and power. If I am honest? I find this step most difficult. It's hard to use words like Almighty, Father in Heaven, glorious, hallowed...and feel like I am connecting with Him. Maybe I get overwhelmed by the greatness of His might that it's hard to fathom His personal, intimate love of a sinner like me? At any rate, at times when I am unsure of how to do this I simply read or sing songs of worship. For example, I love Chris Tomlin's Indescribable:

Indescribable, uncontainable

You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name

You are amazing God

All powerful, untameable

Awstruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim

You are amazing God

C - CONFESSION - This important piece to prayer brings us back to God's side by revealing our repentent heart. Be open and honest in confessing your sin, ask for forgiveness and know it is God's blessing upon us that wipes our slate clean.

T - THANKSGIVING - Here we thank God for the many blessings in our lives including our health, water, shelter, safety, country, leadership, family and friends. And we thank Him for our salvation - the precious gift of life eternal offered to us through the blood of Christ. Oh how He loves you and me!

S - SUPPLICATION - Finally. This is also known as Intercession. I'll admit, I used to start my prayers with this. It's easy to do. In supplication we ask God for needs, either for ourselves or others. If you are like me, this list is long. Some days? Overwhelmingly long.

That's why I am starting a new way to pray in 2013. I wanted a way to focus on my prayers and get to the heart of what I wanted to say in Supplication without skimping on adoration, confession, and thanksgiving. Tune in tomorrow for the scoop on how I am using A.C.T.S. and giving it a new twist!

May I Have a Word?

Happy New Year's! Here we go 2013! This month I'll be sharing the top ten moments God brought into my life this year. Some with happiness. Others with tears. All with blessings.

Today I am focusing on new beginnings. I love starting fresh and the possibilities for triumph that the new year brings! I'll admit that I normally kick off January with plans, resolutions and goals. And every year the list includes some tired yet hopeful language regarding weight loss and organization.

Every year.

You see, my best intentions get sidetracked by toddlers who won't nap, a calendar begging for a quiet day, and temptation that comes in the form of a red velvet birthday cake, not to mention chocolate filled Valentine's Day

...in others words? By life and living in it.

Anyone with me on this?

So this year? This year I am joining a movement that calls for focus. Focus on one word. Instead of trying to juggle too many resolutions and feeling like I've mastered none of them, the word I chose will guide me through the next year.

I prayed about my word. I know God will use it to bless me. To teach me something about myself I never considered. But what to choose? If I'm honest? I have about 50 words I could work on...maybe 100? Hmmm. Where to start?

Within the list I kept circling back to one word: Consistency. At first it seemed an almost imperceptible whisper. No God, not that one...surely there is a less convicting word out there...???

Consistency.

That whisper has transformed into a crystal clear command. It is officially the word God placed in my heart for this year. So over the past few weeks I've been thinking about how this word fits into my days. What it looks like as we enter 2013.

Consistency

...in meeting God through prayer and quiet time

...in eating well and exercising

...in writing, blogging and sharing my heart

...in being at church faithfully

...in being a present wife and mother

It still seems a big list. But what if?

What if one small intentional act of consistency in an area of my life lends itself to another?

And another?

And another?

Lean In

The Lesson

Earlier this week I wrote about a health scare I've had recently. And I've learned a lesson with that post...I shoulda...like, really...told my family BEFORE posting! Oops. I just about gave my dear ones a panic attack and for that, I am so sad. The truth is, I thought I'd make phone calls that morning, but the day got away from me. I goofed, so let that be a lesson to you, bloggy friends! Call first. Write later.

The issue has been walking. Sigh. My poor mother. With her severe rheumatoid arthritis, she would have been able to relate too well to this. I am forever grateful she never had to know I would experience a taste of what she endured for years. On more days than I'll admit it has been hard to get out of bed, even to comfort a crying wee one.

It started last March with a 10K race in Charleston. An injury I never recovered from. Alarms sounding in my head with each month that something was amiss. But with a three and one year old, who has time to slow down?

It wasn't until the past few months that I couldn't ignore the pain, go for walks, or wear shoes that could be considered a smidge fashionable. The pain spread from my feet to my hips and hands. Doctor's visits, steroid shots, x-rays, a brace...nothing seemed to fix me.

The Fear

A month ago a rheumatologist met with me and said I showed signs of lupus...and rheumatoid arthritis, which is believed, in some cases, to be inherited. And despite my best God's Girl prayers?

Fear.Set.In.

No, not fear for myself. For my husband. Because I know the personal courage, dedication and sacrifice my stepfather Jim gave in devoting himself to the "for worse" part of his marriage. God love Him. Seven children, about a bazillion jobs, working toward his doctorate, a thriving practice...and did I mention the SEVEN children??? Always with a smile and optimism. But you know, it had to be tough.

Fear. For my baby girls. Because I want desperately to be a well mother for them. To be able to go to plays. Graduations. Weddings. Paris. I mean, listen, we are already well aware we will be the OLD parents in the bleachers...but I'd still like to be up and about, you know? Traveling the world. Seeing the day when stroppy teens become human again. Best friends.

Fear. Because if you never had the gift of meeting my mother then you don't know: she did "sick" ...well. With dignity. Even on her worst days? She conducted herself with grace. Would I be able to do the same under duress? Could I show kindness and true compassion for others while my body rebelled against itself? I wondered silently, tormented...how God? What if I fail? How can I even begin to live a life that lends itself to a testimony resembling hers?

Lean In

My words trickled to a stop. Numb. They just wouldn't come, despite deadlines for guest posts, writing teams and critique groups. I began to question whether God had really called me to write? Did I have something to say? Was my faith so small that I only wanted Him to take the best parts of me?

Lately....lately, I've been doing a lot of thinking. And stretching. You see, the stretching is good for my muscles that ache so much at the end of the day. When I begin, there is a tautness. It hurts to stretch as I get rid of the day's tension and stress.

But as I continue? Relief. I am quiet. Centered. Peace filled. Pain free, even.

My message today? Lean in. Lean in, friend.

When life hurts.

When it is full of uncertainty.

Lean in, because God has something to say to each of our hearts. It may be scary and painful to take that first step...but if we listen intently...quietly...intentionally, then He can bless us. And while we are listening? Let Him. Let Him use all the best and worst parts of us.

In the end? It's not confirmed, but based on bloodwork, I believe I have osteoarthritis. It is degenerative but I am relieved that it will not attack my immune system and organs. I meet with the doctor this Friday and would love your prayers as I learn what I can do to manage the pain.

Just Another Day

Imagine a world where your babies believe Christmas Day...is just another day.

Another day to wonder if they will eat.
Another day to walk for miles for water.
Another day to get up early and go to the market to try to bring in some money.

For many children this is exactly what they have to look forward to on Christmas. I've Got Somethin' To Say

After a break from blogging, I am back.

My prayer during this time:

Use me God.

Tell me...whisper your sweet words of inspiration.

Give me courage to live outside of my immediate surroundings and circumstances.

Eyes that see beyond the daily trials and into an eternity within your kingdom.

Focus.

Faith.

You see, in the midst of a health scare I've had over the past few weeks, I was paralyzed. I couldn't write. I only worried about what the future would hold for my husband and babies. What would their lives look like as they cared for a sick mother? Who would guide my girls through the turmoil of teen years in a way only a mother could, if I were to pass?

And then? True silence. My trickles of writing ground to a halt. I began to question if I just imagined God called me to write. Or perhaps, I thought, it was just for a short season?

Wouldn't that just make Satan dance for joy? To know He silenced a child of God from proclaiming His greatness...just at the time of year when we have the most powerful, life-changing story to tell with the birth of Christ our savior on Christmas Day? Luke 2:1-39

So today, sweet friends...I declare I've got something to say. My God is an awesome God. A God who loved us so much that He sent His only son to live and die on a cross for us.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;

O Holy Night

I am back. I am writing. Perhaps small, trickles of words to start with? But they will continue. And grow. For His glory. I will tell how Christ uses all the best...and worst parts of me. Will you join me? Even if it is a word? A picture? A verse from a divinely inspired book of the bible?

Speaking of something to say, there were no lines that day. Thankfully. I don't think Santa has recovered from my very detailed 3 year old's description of her list! The past two months I haven't written much. I've been thankful during this first holiday season without mom, my stepmother and dad, to be on the road. Ireland, Asheville, Napa, Boulder have called...what wonderful distractions and happy memories my family and friends made along those sweet, tender days.

But lately? If I'm honest? My heart has been rolling. Tumbling with anxiety. Dark thoughts of uncertainty that messes with this southern girl's peace. Daylight brings blessed busyness. A bleary-eyed focus. My one and three year old daughters command my attention. And my husband catches me in his strong embrace, telling me everything is fine.

So today, I turn my eyes upon Jesus. In this world that can deliver a swift kick as quickly as a beautiful, tear-producing hug from your sweet baby girl when you least expect it...I have found sanctuary. And with that faith in Him, I am returned to peace once again.

All is well.

Maybe not the way I had planned this life of mine. Perhaps better? More meaningful than days filled with my to do list? Days where LIFE....Life...life...as we know it slows down. I become transformed into a voice that tries, often with imperfection, to show others His love, His grace, His compassion, His gift of salvation for a sinner like me. Like you. Like us.

30 Days of Thankfulness: Days 4 & 5

Day 1 - I have to start with my Lord, Jesus Christ. Without Him I am nothing. I am constantly amazed that He gave His life for a sinner like me. What more could He give? In this season I feel Him close, holding my heart. Comforting. Gently leading me to show His compassion and love as best I can.

Day 2 - TheraFlu. No joke. We've been down with a super bug in our house. It's only been a handful of times in our 12 years together that I've seen Brian this ill. I am thankful we live in a country where within one mile of our house there is a store with medicine on the shelves. And that we have a way to pay for it!

Day 3 - My family. I love them with all my heart. Being a wife and mother is my greatest joy!

Day 4 - Grateful for my church, all the people who give tirelessly to make it a wonderful place to call home and the dedication of our new Calvary Life Center this morning.

Day 5- I'm grateful we live in a country where everyone's vote counts - even if I may not agree with the outcome. Praying we respect the democratic process today and in the weeks to come.

More to come! We are still sick but packing up for a short business trip Brian has. It is close enough that he wants the family to come with. I am either in love or crazy...probably both. With just three hours sleep I am packing away!

What We've Been Up To

Happy Tuesday! I have missed all of you and being able to blog for the past few weeks as we traveled!! It is truly a blessing to feel the sense of community I have with the women I've met on this blog and through link ups on other sites. I love hearing from you and what you've been up to this fall.

Thank you so much to Tracy Steel and Michelle Carson for awesome guest posts. These women are part of my She Speaks sisters and constantly provide inspiration for me!

What have we been up to? Our house has been fighting a virus that left Tea with temps hovering at 105! Scary! She and Brian are on the mend while Isla and I cross fingers that we are spared this round.

We also went to Co. Cork, Ireland to see Brian's lovely family. It was SO much fun and I can't wait to share pictures of our adventures this week. Brian and I went for nightly walks which became date night gifts to us from Nana Betty. I took these two shots I thought were cool...

Now that we are back we are enjoying the fall days. I so hope we get to a pumpkin patch this weekend as this is my fav time of year! I've decorated a bit around the house....

Isla had her very first haircut! It was so fun and I can't wait to share pictures this week!

Plus we've just had some sweet moments around here. There are more pictures to post this week before the costume madness begins for Halloween!

I most excited about a special announcement coming soon! I am making big changes to Teagan's Travels which means I've decided to hold off on Destination: Inspiration Tuesdays for the rest of the year.

I feel God calling me to a certain direction within my corner of the world, this little "bench" of mine (thanks Emily Freeman, author of Chatting at the Sky, for the beautiful vision). I so hope you'll grab a coffee and stick with me as I make the changes. I think it's going to be an awesome fall and winter seeing what God has in store!

Loving Someone’s Backside by Guest Blogger Tracy Steel

Hope all are having an amazing day! Tracy Steel from One Degree Ministries is providing some awesome inspiration on Teagan's Travels today!

The Bible teaches that there is a time and purpose for everything under Heaven (Ecclesiastes chapter 3). The older I get, the more I realize and embrace the time and purpose for each backside that I encounter…

Besides being a mother, I am a military wife and mentor. These privileges have given me countless opportunities to make new friends and to talk about God and His Word with women all over the United States.

Unfortunately, at some point our mentoring season ended or my husband’s assignment in that city ended. Though I still remain in contact with these women via phone calls, Facebook, or Skype, I still had to hug them, say “see you later,” and watch as they turned and walked away.

These bittersweet backside moments left me wondering:

Did I encourage her?

Did I help or comfort her in any way?

Did my friendship bring glory to you, God?

A One Degree moment:

I love someone’s backside and the change it symbolizes. I am learning to embrace “see you laters” and am finding freedom from the need for life to remain the same.

Life just isn’t going to remain the way it is now. I need to allow the Holy Spirit to help me let go, so I can embrace what God is doing now.

So next time you are watching a friend walk away, or when you watch your child achieve a milestone, I encourage you to pause. Rejoice over their backside and remember that life is not going to remain the same. The people in your life will change, and so will you.

May we allow God to help us embrace change and fill our hearts with joy despite our bittersweet tears.

Ok, so I have to pray ALOT for God to help me rejoice when saying “see you later.” (BTW, I dislike saying the words “good-bye”) I also assume that I will bawl my eyes out as I watch my children graduate or move away. Who am I kidding? Moving and change stinks. However, letting go is often a process. I am finding that change is tolerable once I allow the Holy Spirit to help my heart adjust. Go figure, right?

“There’s an opportune time to do things, a right time for everything on earth… A right time to cry and another to laugh… A right time to embrace and to part… A right time to hold on and another to let go…”

A New Way to Pray

Hello from Ireland! We are wrapping up a great few weeks hanging out with Brian's family in Co. Cork. I can't wait to share our trip with you. In the meantime, I'm skipping this week's Destination: Inspiration but have a new devotional to share. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and what you've experienced with prayer!

A New Way to Pray

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

A dragonfly in my front yard this summer brought back memories. As a college student, I longed to travel. My heart has always been fascinated by France. The people. The food. The gorgeous language and scenery.

I dreamed of studying there.

But despite my greatest efforts and prayers, I could never pull the funds together to join a study abroad program.

One day, my political science professor nominated me for a full scholarship to study in Japan through the Japanese embassy. The day I completed my application a dragonfly was hanging about my door. In Japan, they are a symbol of good luck. At that moment? I felt such a sense of peace. Friends, I knew I was going to get my scholarship! 　

The two years I spent in Japan were so rich and full of adventures. In that environment, so different from our western culture, I learned so much about myself, my new friends and the world around me. It blessed me tremendously. 　

But it also provided a valuable lesson. Sometimes when God says "No" it is because He has greater plans for us. 　

Destinations we could never imagine.

In Jeremiah 29:11 God outlines his plans for us. In this we can have a hope, joy and peace that transcend worldly understanding.

There was a time early in my career when I was laid off and couldn't see past my tears and feelings of embarrassment. 　But despite my defeat, what followed was a　new role that took me around the world often and to my beloved France for the very first time.

God said "No" when I cried out for a baby. 　I grieved through miscarriages. And I was devastated with an ectopic pregnancy that had to be terminated. But my babies were worth every tear and moment of waiting. I didn't become a mom the way I imagined. Instead, God brought me to my knees and back to Him. 　

To depend on Him and His timing. 　

To praise Him in the storm.

To be at peace when I pray… even before I know His answer.

You see, sometimes God's answer is "No." And sometimes it's "Not right now." Sometimes? It's "Go. All the way. Go for it!"

And sometimes?

If we are lucky? 　

It's something we've never even thought to ask for. And it feels so miraculous looking back in hindsight. 　

Reflection and Action:
I know there are also more serious and painful decisions than I’ve represented here. I don't intend to dismiss them. 　I only want to offer hope with this post. 　

Is there something you are praying for today? 　Can you give it to God and wait in peace with the wonderful expectation that He has wonderful plans for you?

Home is Not the House Itself

Our recent move across state lines was a challenging one for my children. Katie’s heart has only known one home. So when our new home was finally ready, the children’s rooms were the first to be unboxed and arranged.

In fact, I couldn’t wait to show them their new rooms. My heart was blessed as they rushed in and saw their beloved toys and beds. They knew they were finally home. The wait was over. Their expressions and giggles said it all.

However, as much as my children love their new rooms, they will not stay in them for long. They love to follow me around the house. They long for my presence. To them, home is not their room, it is wherever mommy is!

The Father’s House

Jesus finished washing the feet of the Disciples. To add to their confusion, Jesus told them that He would be leaving them (John 13:33) and that they could no longer be with Him.

Knowing the condition of their troubled hearts, Jesus said:

“Do not be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

~John 14:1-4 NIV (emphasis mine)

There is a room in the eternal house of God for those who have called on the name of Jesus to save them.

Now I know some of you are already wondering what the curtains in your room will look like, if you will have a queen or king size bed, or if you have a view of the Tree of Life from your kitchen window. Hang with me, I used to be an Interior Designer, and my imagination goes there sometimes…Scripture doesn’t go into detail about my room specs. So I need to STOP it!

Just keeping it real…

Home is not the House Itself

Did you catch what it says?

Whoa…

Our home is where the presence of God, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are. We, the forgiven and redeemed, will dwell with them for forever, and ever, and ever.

I needed to be reminded of this and to remember where I am headed.

And the present isn’t it.

Our wait for our new home will end.

Jesus is in Heaven.

He is preparing…

He will come back and take us home.

Through the eyes of my children, I caught a glimpse of what awaits. My home is not just a room.

Jesus is where my home is.

When I see Him face to face, my expression will say it all…

Dodging Fiery Darts

Recognizing and loosening the footholds the enemy places in our minds.

I remember it like it was yesterday. My palms sweaty, my head pounding, I stepped on to the small square as the little old lady in front of me began to read off the numbers, "Quarter pound gain!" was yelled into the room. I was 12 years old and attending my weekly TOPS weight loss meeting. This was not my first rodeo, as I had been attending these meetings with my mom and grandmother since I was a toddler, and became an active member at age nine.

Size and weight were always the issues that coughed in my face when I woke every morning. They were always there, reminding me that I was different. Growing up I lived in a wonderful Christian home with two loving parents and labored under the delusion that since I had invited Jesus into my heart at the age of 5, I was untouchable to Satan. So, with every fleeting thought of unworthiness, I began to crumble from the inside.

Due to my overwhelming insecurities, I shied away from everything. My mother grew so concerned she threatened to take me to the doctor. My dad said I would grow out of it. And what did I think? I can't remember a day in my childhood that I didn't believe everybody would be much better off without my presence. I never voiced that of course. Those thoughts weren't what good, Christian girls thought about, right?

My story is not new to most people. The majority of us have encountered some form of body image unraveling at some point in our delicate lives. Maybe you were the skinny girl or perhaps you had curly hair when straight was "in". Satan has a way of finding the things that hinder us most and exposing them like a raw wound. This is not the most fun thing to think about, but it is of the utmost importance to talk about.

"The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." John 10:10 Amplified

The fight we fight is against principalities and darkness, NOT our wardrobe nor the scale. Satan finds us at our weakest and plants a small thought that will grow into a stronghold. As daughters of the King, we must be aware of these thoughts and have a plan to "weed" our spiritual garden.

Here are 5 truths to remember as we fight the fight of our very lives:

God knit each of us together to be different. Psalm 139:13
You, and only YOU, have been created to fulfill a specific purpose. 1 Peter 4:10-11
Our fight is against more than the flesh. Ephesians 6:12
Satan deals in chaos, clutter and distraction. John 10:10
The pursuit of perfection on this Earth is futile and weakens us. John 14:2-3

We must learn to recognize the footholds that are placed in the mind and speak the Truth of God's Word to banish them. Things such as self derogatory statements can be a foothold that evolves into a stronghold such as anxiety or depression. Allowing Satan even a corner of our mind will keep us trapped in bondage and unable to fully devote our lives to Christ and His higher calling.

We as a society of women have been plagued by these issues for far too long. Think about this: what would happen if we all stood for what we believed in, unwavering even if our jeans felt tight or we woke up with an enormous pimple that day? What if we truly took the time to dive into the character of God and accept His unending love for us? The day that you can throw your arms up, lean your head back and expose your heart to the Almighty, allowing Him to fill and fulfill you, is the day that we become a formidable force in God's kingdom.

Think of Me...a Letter from Rwanda

To wrap up Compassion International's month long campaign we've been challenged to write from our sponsored child's perspective.

Here's my letter from Pascaline, a young girl from Rwanda living within the ghostly shadow of horrific events that rocked her country just a few years ago...

Dear Brian and Michelle,

Think of me....

My parents worry about the rebels rebuilding in nearby Congo. What will our future hold here? Will we have to relive the tragedy that still haunt our parent's dreams? How can my generation change the story?

I'm just a little girl and sometimes life seems so harsh. We've no electricity. No running water. When you sponsored me, I borrowed the dress you saw me in so I could have a nice picture.

My shoes, yes, you noticed they were torn but they were the only ones I had to wear in this mountainous region. At the time, I couldn't manage a smile and you were drawn to that. You wanted to give me a reason...

Think of me...

Since your sponsorship, life has gotten better. We have a new roof on our house! Jesus delivered a cow that provides milk and an additional source of income. And we received a potato crop that also helps us so much.

Think of me...

I get to go to school now. We learn of Jesus and his love for us which I share with my family. I have a great time with my friends and also get health check ups and vaccines.

Think of me...

When they deliver letters to the children in my development center my heart beats faster. Will I get a letter from you today? I love sending you drawings I've made. But it really makes me feel special to get your words...to know you think of me. To see the artwork from Teagan and Isla, the stickers and Bible coloring pages.

I don't feel invisible anymore. I believe God made me special. That He is with me in this place. He's providing a future through you, through Compassion International. Never stop thinking of me, of my friends. We are a world away but we need you. Please promise me you'll try.

Brian and I are taking a marriage class that our Executive Pastor wrote called Marriage the Way It Was Meant to Be. It is wonderful.

And I can't stop talking about a point Scott made on the first night of class. One that I believe holds the power to bullet proof your marriage...

First, he revealed that statistically, less than 10% of Christian couples pray together regularly. Wow. That just blows my mind when I think of it. Still, I confess that until recently Brian and I didn't pray together either.

I am comfortable with plenty of prayers throughout my day on my own or even with my baby girls. But there is something so intimate about prayer, isn't there? In prayer we share our deepest insecurities, our fears, our failings and desires.

Here's the good news:

Couples that pray together, stay together. Remember that old saying? Turns out it there was something to it. Consider the following stats:

The divorce rate for couples who pray together:

- 1 in 1,152 couples*
- 1 in 10,000 couples**

Wow! The first number is much more conservative than the last. But you know what? I'll take those odds any day over a one in two chance that we won't make it. Wouldn't you?

So Brian and I've been praying. Short prayers. But they bless us. Bits of our hearts touch each other.

I know what he is thinking. I am humbled by what he says. Honored that he would take the time to be a leader, to step up to this challenge with me. We alternate nights. Hold each other. Connect.

This has actually become a part of my day that I look forward to! What a blessing, indeed.

Dear God, thank you for giving us the power to come directly to you with our hopes, dreams and needs. We praise you for being at the center of our marriage and strengthening it against so many influences and dangers in our culture. Help us to continue to know each other during this special time in our day, building a bond with you that is impenetrable. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Reflect and Respond:

Would you be willing to take five minutes a day to bullet proof your marriage? Can you and your husband commit to praying together every day for a week?

Insert God's presence into your marriage and watch Him make it a force that can't be broken.

Pinterestingly Compelling Philanthropy

I am so bummed that I got a virus on my computer last week because two things I LOVE came together to change our world...

Compassion International wrapped up a week long Pinterest party on Sunday. The non-profit's bloggers shared pictures of our sweet sponsored children in an effort to continue to spread the word during this month long campaign to rescue 3,100 children in the poorest countries of the world from a life of poverty.

I may be late to the party, but I did create a board for my sponsored children and wanted to share some pictures of my girls with their sisters in Christ. They are such a part of our family's day that Teagan recently asked for a map to Pascaline's house.

Over the years Pascaline's family has had a new roof put on their house, received a cow as a source of food and income and a potato crop as part of our sponsorship. We love knowing that not only she benefits but her family as well.

Being sponsors has allowed us to give our children an appreciation for the blessings we have while prompting them to conserve water, electricity and food out of respect for Pascaline and Elibie.

We have also enjoyed getting to know more about where the girls live. In addition, we also include Dahrling, Bethlehem and Jimmi in our daily prayers. They are Compassion children sponsored by others who have touched our lives.

Would you please take a moment to pray over these children who are waiting for sponsors? And if God is prompting you to sponsor, please know it will provide the most tremendous blessings for you and your family!
