Jammed Packed Month of Horse Fun!

Where to start? June = jammed pack full month of horses!

Congratulations to all of our students who competed at IEA HT last weekend! Everyone reached new goals! The Novice division was extremely challenging with many cross country eliminations and falls. Not our team! They all knuckled down and tackled that cross country course! HELMET CAM of IEA Novice HT that our fabulous team tackled last weekend! Fence #4 & Fence #9 were the bogy fences. #9 was removed half way thru due to so many rider falls....

Each week in June we will be offering summer camp. Our first week of summer camp is in full swing. All of our new budding equestrians are having a great time and learning lots! We are thankful for this weeks mild weather. Camps are almost full, but there is still time to SIGN UP for the remaining camps.

Spring Run HT is this weekend (06/08-06/10). Always a fantastic well run event with one the best competitor parties around. Since it is right down the street in Prospect, it is a great event to come out support the team as well as spend a a great weekend outdoors.

Next is Flying Cross MHT on 06/17. Again another close fun event right in our back yard. This is the 2nd event in the 42 Fleur De Lis Mini Trial series. Our students well on their way to winning the High Point trophy!

Then we are off to the Midsouth Pony Club Rally & HT at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jacki Lemastus amazing ride at Spring Bay this past weekend! It was her move up to Training and she ROCKED it finishing 5th! Way to go Jackie!! We are all so proud of you and your accomplishments!

Stone Place Dressage

We never like to ride when the weather is cold. Most of the time I just want to stay in by the fire place. However these little extra shows where we take the time to practice the parts of the event really pay off at the events. Riding at home is NEVER the same as riding in the show. Most people only perform to 30% of their ability under pressure. Imagine how good the best riders are at home! So putting your self under pressure at these small shows in the off season will always pay off with big rewards later. Some of the best competitors I know I started to put under pressure at a very young age. Now they have no trouble with pressures in the warm up arenas, changes of schedules etc. And most importantly they handle life pressures with a lot less anxiety! I'm proud of Jackie Lemastus today for putting herself out there even though it is not the ideal situation and NOT her favorite phase! Anything you do today is a win!

Goals

So this is my favorite time of the year. I love to review and analyze how to be better in anything. Anyone who has visited my house knows I love self-help books and actually didn't understand why people read anything other than non-fiction for a long time. This time of year everyone has an opinion on how to set goals, make goals and of course attain goals. So I get to read a lot of self help articles, coaching articles, business articles even financial articles. All of these are in the news in January.
There are a lot of similarities in all of the articles; set an attainable goal, measurable goal and give yourself a time line for example. Also remember to set monthly goals that will help you attain your quarterly goals that will help you attain your yearly goals! This is a lot of goal setting!
One year I got so addicted to setting goals that I set a goal for myself every hour of the day and got fixated on the math of goal setting.
Than recently I found some notes from a sport psychologist I use to go to for my horse shows. Of course, my goal oriented parents thought it would help me to compete better. It did and really helped me understand pressures of competing. This man was a very big professional and ended up coaching two gymnastic Olympic teams and many NFL players.
One thing he taught me I think we all need to practice more of; visualization. Very few hip news articles talk about this but it is so useful. First I am not talking about visualizing yourself on your horse. Well yes and no. I am talking about feeling the horse underneath you, smelling the wind as your ride, hearing your breath as you gallop, seeing the jump, feeling your body get into position. You get the idea. Now this is a brain exercise and is hard to do at first so you need to practice this visualization everyday.
For example everyday you need to sit quietly for 10 minutes and think about ONE goal. Than start to see yourself achieving that goal. You might just see yourself holding the trophy, than feel the trophy , than hear your friends scream, than see the cameras flash. That part is easy now visualize the skills needed to get the trophy. For example you need to visualize what the perfect dressage ride feels like. Every transition with the timing right, the perfect place in the arena, your core muscles tight but relaxed. You get the idea.
Now when you hit on something you can not visualize, feel, hear or smell in your imagination (And by the way you need to see this in color.) than you need to work on that particular skill. So let's say you can't feel a perfect canter transition you need to then get your coach to help you and feel one. Than visualize it everyday and practice them as often as is safe for your horse.
Our sport is very difficult because we can not drill our horses like a football player or other singular athlete can. We are working as a team with our horse so we need to know when we can push the horse and when we need to let his body recover. Because of this, visualization is a great exercise. So go sit quietly and start dreaming your dream for real! And remember one dream/step at a time.

Dressage show

Cross country schooling

I would like to schedule a cross country schooling day for Sunday MAr. 22nd at FCF! Groups will be Novice/Training- 1:30; BN-3:00, baby starter/starter- 4:30. Cost is $35 for FCF and $40 to me for coaching. If you are going to Spring Bay this schooling is mandatory! Please email me if you are planning on attending. Thanks.

Clinic with Jennifer Wooten

I have been discussing the possibility with Jennifer Wooten ( Rides the mare of the year The Good Witch) about doing an after school/work clinic on April 28th, 29th & or 30th. This would be a reasonably priced clinic. ( under $275 for 2 days) Before I commit to her financially I would like to know who from our barn would be interested. She is a Pony Clubber and was 7th last year at Rolex. Her coach is actually my old coach in California. She had one of the best cross country and dressage rides I saw all day. She was short listed for the Olympics last year, is riding at Rolex this year and is being considered for our WEG team. She will offer individual and semi private dressage lessons as well as a two day clinic at Alta Vista one day doing gymnastics and then at FCF doing cross country. She will teach everyone from D2Pony Clubbers to Intermediate eventers so please email me if you are interested. ariattieq@bellsouth.net. If you would like to show your parents you would like to help them with your lesson bill this is a great way to do it. If you get one new person to sign up for summer camp or Oaks and Derby camp you will get one free half hour lesson. This is limited to two sign ups per student. SO you could earn two half hour private lessons! Just have your new friend go to the website www.ariattihorse.com, print a registration form off, fill out form and put YOUR NAME at the bottom and then send in with the deposit. Once I get the registration form I will send you an email that you have received a free lesson. That is it. Good Luck and thanks for your help.

Needed Feeder for all lesson horses every Saturday and Sunday am. This job starts Feb. 21st. Responsibilities include: Feeding all lessons horses including medicines that are needed by 9:00 am every Sat. & Sun, cleaning all feed buckets (once out of the two days), filling water troughs and scrubing one (once out of the two days). sweeping out feed room and tack room, raking barn isle and picking up manure in lesson horse barn. Total hours needed is no more than 2 hours over the entire weekend. Dependability and detail oriented a must. Must show good time management skills and be able to follow directions perfectly. Pay is $20 a week; paid weekly. to apply: send your last quarter grades, an essay telling us why you would be good at this and a recommendation/approval from your parent. If you are going to the Feb. 21st dressage show you can get your eventing test online at www.useventing.com and your dressage test at www.usef.org. You need to search on documents on both these websites. Everyone should know their tests by next week. Covered Bridge Combined Test entries will be due to me Feb. 24th.
