I've had a few questions about Primal...

I figured it'd just be easier to make a new entry! It got too long for a comment!!

Primal/Paleo AKA the 'Caveman diet' But, I don't like how that sounds, so I stick to Primal! It's also not a 'diet' but it's honestly a lifestyle change.

It's the idea that our bodies evolved to do certain things, and to work in a certain way.

Basically, it means eating no grains (bread, wheat, oats) and focusing instead on high quality meats, veg and some fruit. A good way to think of it is, if you would have found it, or chased it down - eat it!

I eat dairy as well, because I'm not quite ready to make THAT jump yet, but it's been treating me really well!

I eat a lot of Omega-3 rich eggs, grass-fed animals (Beef, Lamb) And do whatever I can to wrap whatever I'm eating in BACON! I don't cook with veg oil, I cook with coconut oil, or Ghee.

Yesterday, I had a gigantic Taco Salad (A hell of a salad too, everything was organic, and it had heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers, chives, onions, cheese, grass fed taco meat, lettuce, and sour cream - I ate it out of a Salad bowl...with a fork!), Bacon wrapped Jalapeno chicken, and some Primal cake that I made (A friend of mine called it a chocolate omelet!) Today, it's gonna be an omelet, some more taco salad (Because I have taco meat left), some more bacon wrapped chicken (I made a BUNCH of them, so they're snacks!) and Tri-Tip on the grill!

I also don't do 'Chronic Cardio', as from the research I've been reading...it's really not good for our bodies. I do short workouts...when I feel like it, but, mostly I just go for a long walk every so often. (Three miles) Otherwise it's about 20 asian squats, and 20 wall pushups, and I wave my hand and call it a day. I've started to get more into the exercise, and I'm learning how someone who's my weight (That's 252lbs) can do short, intense rounds of exercise. Because I WANT to, not because I feel like I have to.

I'm even looking in to getting together with some Primal groups to go exercise Primal Law #7. Play. Primal people get out there and play till they're exhausted! And that's what we call exercise!

I'm drawn to Paleo/Primal because of how easy it is. I can go out to eat anywhere and still live Primal, I haven't made any HUGE changes to my life outside of eating better, and being more conscious of what I'm eating. And the success stories... There's 300 PAGES of success stories over at the forum.

Here's one: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-unconquerable-dave/
And his update: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-unconquerable-dave-still-unconquerable/

And that guy's story? He's not alone, or amazing, or an outlier, he's one of the regular stories! Mark features a new success story EACH WEEK!

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/just-shy-of-50-years-old-and-ive-never-felt-or-looked-better/
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/i-started-to-take-measures-into-my-own-hands/
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/i-didn%E2%80%99t-just-%E2%80%9Cmanage%E2%80%9D-my-condition-i-beat-it-and-wiped-the-floor-with-it/

Okay, I'll stop... ^_^

A good place to start if you're interested is the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. Or, if you're just a little curious, pop over to Mark's Daily Apple. Ignore all the stuff selling you things, and read the articles. The forum there is also extremely supportive and encouraging, I'm there daily.

Since I'm an Animal person, I also popped over to http://gnolls.org and my girlfriend ordered me the Gnoll Creedo for my birthday. I'll let you all know how that is!

To reach my goal, I've got roughly 130 pounds to lose (I'm 5'2" and aiming for 130 because my 'recommended' weight of 108 is just ridiculous!), chest reconstructive surgery, and the desire to be able to walk into somewhere like Diesel and pick whatever I want to wear out. (I also want Mark to feature me on the website... ^_^; )

For the first time in my life, I feel like I can actually do it.

As for me, I've got a blog over at http://primaldirewolf.wordpress.com if you want to follow exactly what I'm doing.

Feel free to ask questions, I may not have all the answers, as I'm still new to this, but I can tell you that even my bumbling attempts have already had some stellar results.

Hey all.

I recently started living Primal, and it's been fantastic for me.

I was curious if there were any other Primal folks about? Anyone interested in the Primal lifestyle?

Hi, I'm Westly, I'm not new here, I just started living Primal about... 19 days ago.

I've lost easily 4" around my waist, and roughly 23 pounds. I started this off wearing size 46 pants, now I wear a tight 42.

I'm still very new to Primal, but it fits my lifestyle in amazing ways, and I have already been seeing the benefits! (Not to mention I'm learning to cook, and shop wisely!)

I have KP (Keratosis Pilaris) and since I've cut grains my KP's clearing up. My face has cleared up entirely, and I have a crapload of energy!

I've got roughly 130 lbs to lose, and I'm looking forward to starting exercising as at the moment all I can do is the Move Slowly (Long walks is my choice of activity!) part of the plan.

Anyway, HI!!

Musicat here to say hi, looking for some support

Hey all. I'm Rourkie - long time lurker, first time poster here. Some of you know me, and if you do, you know that I'm all about loving pudge and enjoying weight gain and stuff like that. For those of you who don't, yes I'm weird, and yes, I think you're all wonderful the way you are.

I'm actually here, though, not really to lose weight, but more to get back in shape. Lately I can tell I'm starting to feel more lethargic, and my body composition is changing a bit (prolly because of age). I actually get more exercise in my daily life now than I have in years, now that I'm on my feet all day at work, and running around campus at school. My weight's even dropped a bit from what it was a couple of years ago, but despite all this, I just feel... weak. (If that even makes sense?)

I wasn't super big into sports growing up, but in highschool I did crosscountry and swimteam (captain of both teams senior year), and in college I did marching band, and so while I did put on some weight in the last ten years, I always had some muscle to support it.

Lately, though, I feel as if I'm all fluff, and no tough. As you've probably surmised right now, I don't mind having the extra weight to carry, but it's high time I put back some muscle and felt like myself again.

Besides, it's been too long since anyone's posted here, so I figure it was high time to jump on the bandwagon.

Goal #1: Do 100 sit-ups without stopping before the end of the year.
Progress: 65% (74 sit-ups) - see below.

So, I started today with a challenge: to try to do 100 situps without stopping. This is my first goal for now.

I ended up stopping at 74 with a couple of quick breaks thrown in. If we count each break as -3 points, I got a 65. A "D" is passing, but just barely. I have a lot of catching up to do this semester it seems.

Starting weight: 209 lbs (Today)
Goal Weight: 200 lbs by Dec 31

I'll have to see if I can steal my roommate's scale sometime - his has a body fat % tracker and I'd be interested to know what it says.

Folks, I really need people to get on my case about this if I'm going to keep it up - that's why I'm posting here. Please feel free to drop me a note by email (dorourkie@gmail.com) or PM on livejournal to keep my fluffy butt on track.

I guess that's really it for now. See you on the flipside, hopefully!

So...it's been forever since I've posted here, but I want to see if I can try again at eating healthy.

I love cereal, and I wanted to see what kind of cereals that would be a good choice for eating healthy.

As for personal tastes, I'd like it to have some kind of taste...like if it were shredded mini-wheats, if it had some kind of flavour in it so that it's not just plain ol' wheat, just so I can keep interested in it...and to make sure I don't dump a ton of sugar on it just to add some taste to it! XD Or maybe if there something I can add to it that would give it a flavour, like fruit or berries of some kind?

At the moment, I'm thinking about getting Honey Nut Cheerios, or Honey Nut Shredded Wheat (spoon size). I do like oatmeal (which we have here at the house) but I tend to add honey or brown sugar to it.

What does everyone recommend?

Current Weight: 262.6 lb

Weight lost this run: 23.4 lb
Avg weight loss per week: 3.3 lb

Weight lost since peak: 52.4 lb

Yay. I figured I should post on the major goal of having lost over 50 lbs since my high point before the move.

For reflection, the last time I weighed this light was Oct 2001.

As with susandeer, a lot of the credit goes to the "Lose It" app on the iPhone. Counting calories is a ROYAL pain. To have an app that has restaurant foods, grocery brands, and other food info pre-loaded makes it one or two simple clicks to see how many calories you have left for the day.

I'm finding that sticking with a core of generally low-carb food curbs my appetite, and then the app on the phone helps me keep an eye on consuming too much. The result is a pleasant and steady loss of weight without hunger or much fuss.

(I'm not doing the atkins hard-nosed low-carb thing. This is good. I stay in that neighborhood for most things, but still have healthy carbs elswhere to pick up all the vitamins and nutrients I need. Sushi would be verboten on Atkins, but so far it's working for me. The key is to use the app to not overkill on volume of anything.)

Once you're used to eating less, it just becomes more natural and much harder to eat more. That takes about a month to settle into.

I know I have lost some muscle weight on this diet. I've been doing very little exercise other than the half-mile to a mile of walking I get in around work every day. I should be doing the gym thing and the treadmill thing more. It will probably turbo charge the weight loss. Though a part of me doesn't want to upset a steady decline.

This little app almost feels like buying a cheat guide for an Xbox game or such. I am quite literally sitting on my butt working most of the day, not really doing much exercise, and still losing weight without being hungry at a steady pace.

Boy do I feel loads better to have the weight off though. My belt is down on it's last notch. I'm going to have to buy a smaller belt soon.

Portion Plates

I recently posted in a reply to someone else about portion plates, but then proceeded to do some more digging. I looked at quite a few plates and the thought was always, "Is this something I would take to the office/studio?" Mostly, I was answering no.

This plate http://theportionplate.com/ is good in that it makes judging food sizes easy without the plate later by giving you real objects as a comparison, such as the old meat = a deck of cards and a baseball is equivalent to 1 cup of veggies, but it's not a very nice looking plate.

This http://www.thedietplatecanada.com/products_family.cfm is a bit better and even differentiates between men and women orby just how much weight you intend to lose. It's also a bit easier on the eyes.

Then there's this http://jeffreyharris.net/products.aspx It's not as detailed in terms of information as other plates, but it's a lot nicer to look at and doesn't yell, "Hey! I'm tryin' ta lose weight ovuh heeyuh!" It's also porcelain, not plastic. Very nice. AND he's also got a spring sale going on. Funny thing is, I found this just as I was thinking, "Maybe I should design a plate..."

Stick to grilled chicken, unless you really crave the beef (listen to your bod, you might be low on iron).
Long time no posting..because I have been focusing on maintaining rather than losing. However, we're starting the Biggest Loser contest again at work, and I've gained a few pounds, so it's back on the regimen for me.

Start date: 2/19/09
Start weight: 188.3

Short term goal: 185
Long term goal: 180 or lower.

I hope to meet the goal by June, when our contest ends, but we will see.

So I've been rather determined in the last week to quit smoking, and I'm going to turn that determination into something even more positive! I'm going to lose some fscking weight! Here's the deal: every Thursday (or friday if for whatever reason I can't log on thursday) I am going to weight in; naked standing weight (har har pix/etc).

I've not made nearly 4 days without smoking, and my mood is improving a lot and I'm not getting any more nastiness. I don't forsee myself getting a craving in quite a while (and if I do I have mouth stuff to play with). I've gotten a gym membership and activated it yesterday, and I ran for about an hour yesterday and an hour today, like really productive cardio (did some weights yesterday and am uber-sore from it so didn't do any tonight). 30 minutes each run, alternating every 2 minutes a 3.8 MPH powerwalk and a 6.1 MPH jog (which is fast for me atm). By the last jog I really have to pump myself up to make it, but I did it again tonight. Machine says I burned 400 calories but I think I'm gonna burn a bunch more from activating dormant muscles. I haven't exercised in over 4 years!!!

Anyway, THIS week's weigh in is 237.6. No-smoke-time: 4 days.

Wish me luck guys, I'm actually DOING this.

Xposting from my journal.
