I find it inconceivable that my dad passed away 30 years ago (12 April 1996)... no way! I still miss him every day.

He was a good bloke!

It's a Manly Thing

I have followed Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in the Australian Rugby League since I was a lad. And yes - they are the team everyone else loves to hate [laffs]. I'm not a die-hard fanatic - nothing like that, just a supporter. Win-lose-draw.

I grew up within a (literal) bull's roar of Brookvale Oval in the 70's. I could hear the crowd's distant roar while I listened to the game on the radio... those games I didn't attend! Dad used to drive me and a mate to a local shopping centre near the oval, and I'd walk up to the ground to watch a game. Good fun memories. Then Dad would listen to the game on the radio (Frank Hyde on 2SM!), and come pick us up at the same place after the match had finished.

Me and Sailing = Love It

I caught my dad's passion for sailing from him. The [magical] physical and sensory experience of being afloat - sailing upon the water - has never left me.

That's me, October 2011, at Carcoar Dam Sailing Club.

I had a c.15 year break away from sailing. Quite by chance, I heard about this little sailing club on the radio. I checked it out - and stayed for years! (2004 - 2012).

After spending years sailing on open Sydney Harbour, the huge difference of sailing on a small inland freshwater dam was satisfyingly and refreshingly different. Plus: no Manly Ferries to avoid... just drought [laffs].

The awesome sense of "Community" at this little inland sailing club was amazing... as is the sailing community anywhere. I even spent a year being the Club 'Secretary'. The hour's country drive from home (in Bathurst) was worth it every time.

And no - it's an optical illusion: I am not about to run aground (laffs).

I eventually regretted selling that adorable one-man sailing dinghy in 2006. So easy to sail, and even easier to right again after a capsize!

The Laser (below) was good... but with the Solo (above), I felt much more comfortable sitting 'in' it, rather than sitting 'on' the Laser. I don't know how to express it.

I ended up driving to and from Melbourne (a 1,600km / c.1,000 mile round trip! Oh god... what was I thinking? [laffs]) to buy this Laser (below), which I renamed "Wyreema II" (2007).

I ended up selling it (together with its trailer) when I moved to Queensland in 2012. Oh well.

Sailability

I loved being involved with this - taking people with a disability out sailing, and allowing them to experience something they would otherwise never know. They ran alongside the Carcoar Dam Sailing Club... I'd sail/race with the club on a Saturday, and help with Sailability on the Sunday, during the warmer months. (2006-2012)

Irony 101: now I have MS, I am unable to sail, help out, or even get out there to participate. Bugger.

I was the 'forward hand', who set the kite (ie. the big colourful sail).

I skippered a Flying 11 out of Manly for a season (1981-ish?), also called (unsurprisingly) "Wyreema". We won a few races, too.

The pics (below) aren't my boat, unfortunately. That's what a Flying 11 looks like. They were great fun, an 11-foot-long 2-man sailing dinghy.

(I will have a large hunt around to find a pic-copy of my actual boat.)

Why the name "Wyreema"?

Dad had named his sailing dinghies "Wyreema" ever since the 1940's. My brother and I always assumed it had some deeper significance.

Our great-grandfather was travelling back to Australia from New Zealand, aboard the steamship "Wyreema" (cf. image below), early in the 20th century. We thought it might have been related to that.

The Maori (ie. native New Zealand language) term 'Wyreema' means "a meeting of five waters" (ie. a delta).

We thought that might have been somehow significant.

No. In the end, we discovered there was no deeper significance to the name. DAD JUST LIKED THE NAME, as he possibly saw it named on this block of units near where he and Mum grew up (Mosman, Sydney, NSW, Australia). Yes, it is still there! (pic below)

Oh yes, we had a good laugh about that.

Nowadays, during our summer sailing season, I can watch - livestreamed online - sailing races from the Club I used to sail with at Manly on Sydney Harbour!

I used to sail this class of boat MANY years ago, albeit the boats were a lot clunkier then (cf above).

Watching this live online, living 200 km / 125 miles inland, is just so awesome and soul-reviving for me.

Being able to watch this live is awesome. I caught my passion for sailing from my late dad. I was thinking about all these sailing vids, and how he would have loved it. I randomly burst into tears just thinking about the good memories I have with him sailing: I still miss him, even after 30 years.

I always watch the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in Sydney Harbour, every Boxing Day. It was a 'tradition' growing up for dad and me to watch it together on TV - which I happily continue. I raise a glass to my dad every year.

Even as dinghy sailors, we loved the visual spectacle - and the sheer size and speed of those things!!!

My brother and I watched it live on Sydney Harbour once - what an amazing visual experience!

Here's what a 16-foot skiff looked like when I was sailing them, late 1970's-1985.

Now... how they have changed!!! Gone from a crew of four to just three!

It's great how the Manly club still have an awesome youth sailing program.

Quite a few old Manly sailors have gone on to win Olympic Gold Medals in sailing!!!

Of course, in the case of any ultra-fast sailing craft, 16-foot skiffs have their 'moments'...

I sailed this 18-foot skiff in a Sea Scout Regatta c.1980... an amazing experience. The 16's I was used to sailing were nothing like this!

16's (what I sailed) are the smaller version of Sydney Harbour's iconic 18' Skiffs.

From a century+ ago: 18-foot skiffs - no flotation in the boat, no ballast (except for a hugely-heavy LEAD centreboard, that took 3 men to lift it out of the boat!), a large number of heavy crew, insanely massive sail area, no trapeeze, none of the technology used today... If they capsized, they could actually sink!!!

This was HARD. CORE. SAILING!!!

100% respect.

In the last few years, people have built recreations of the 18-foot skiffs from a century ago and race them on Sydney Harbour today! History kept alive.

My only brother, David, turned 70 in 2024. He is happily married to my "Favourite Sister-in-Law" [an in-joke, as she is my only SiL!], Colleen. They live about a 45-minute car ride away, thankfully.

David is ten years older than I am, and we almost didn't know each other for many years growing up. It wasn't a negative/hostile thing, we just had nothing in common at all.

It wasn't until my late 20s that we connected; now we are "Besties"! Excellent! We can hang out together now, comfortably with no agendas, and talk for hours effortlessly... from solving the World's Problems to talking absolute silliness... it's great. Truly is.

One fascinating thing is that as we are ten years apart, we have different memories and experiences of our parents, at different times in their lives. We miss them of course. (Dad & Mum)

St. Joseph's Mount Proposed Development

PEOPLE POWER/COMMUNITY VICTORY!

WE WON!!!

COUNCIL HAVE TOLD THE DEVELOPERS TO LOWER THE HEIGHT, BULK AND DENSITY OF THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT!

The Council told the developers that their proposal "does not fit the character of this site".

Plus, Council has altered the Planned Development Zoning!

Council has voted NOT TO PROCEED with the proposed development.
Council has decided that the the building height Land Zone will remain at 9 meters.

WE WON!!!

Council has now voted on both 50 Busby St (the old St Catherines) and 34 Busby St (Logan Brae). The Planning Proposals to raise height and density controls on both sites were vigorously opposed by South Bathurst residents. For the 50 Busby St proposal, Council voted to go with the developers option but to limit the height of buildings to 12m. For 34 Busby, Council voted to retain the height and density under the LEP (9m), but to change the density under the Development Control Plan to allow a higher population density (though not as high as it would have been had the LEP changed). South Bathurst residents made clear they are not averse to development within reason, in keeping with the character of the neighbourhood and respectful of existing residents.

➽ It's a HERITAGE CONSERVATION ZONE for goodness' sake! Doesn't that mean anything?

➽ Then there are the ensuing traffic and infrastructure nightmares from a proposed new population of 500+ people, right next to a children's playground, on narrow unpaved streets.

➽ Save those gorgeous OLD heritage trees and green open space for future generations.

➽ It's literally 5 house sites away from Ben Chifley's Cottage, a National Historic Site. Even the local park is part of our history here: Robert Menzies celebrated the wake of Prime Minister Ben Chifley on the site of Milltown Park.

➽ Then there's the Bees! Save the bees!

➽ Gotta fight this absurdity.

● This proposed addition of c.500 new residents, plus assorted increased traffic, etc., is wholly unsuitable for this rural suburban location.

● The current Council Planned Building Height Limit in this rural suburban area is 9m. The proposed development is 18 m or 6 stories high, which may lead to further inappropriate precedents in/around Bathurst.

● The proposed development is within a Local Heritage Conservation Zone. This change may lead to further inappropriate precedents in/around Bathurst.

● The proposal does not provide a solution to the need for affordable housing.

There are obviously a number of reasons to be concerned about these developments, and we did discuss these, but we also looked at positive actions we could take. This included flyers to make sure all surrounding residents are aware, as there are still those that don’t know. A consistent image/brand is being developed for the action group in order to show a coordinated community approach. We will be attending council meetings regularly and asking questions. A story in the newspaper will also happen at some point. This proposal is far from affordable housing. Affordable housing is what’s required for the housing crisis, not this proposed monstrosity for wealthy investors and such. Why do those with money feel they have the right to circumvent or rewrite planning laws that exist for the benefit of the many? Is this another case of “Sydney money” pushing its way into Bathurst? I watched a place next to my parents-in-law’s house in Sydney, where a developer charged ahead, regardless of commitments he’d given both the council and his neighbours, and changed the building to suit himself. When complaints went in, his response, and ultimately that of the council, was “too late, it’s already there”. Bathurst doesn’t need this sort of muscling-in by money-grubbing, ratbag outsiders (or even insiders)! ... (re. 'Affordable Housing): the people living in tents down at the river will not be able to afford these upmarket apartments and town houses. If Council was fair dinkum about social housing they would require a certain percentage of all new builds to include homes for the disadvantaged. 💥 I am currently sorting through and backing up (again) my music HDs with LOTS of music, both albums and singles!

💥 The Beatles (of course!) My playlist for them is 32 hours worth; sourced from official and unofficial releases, bootlegs, live, radio etc etc.

I am a confirmed Beatleholic!

💥 I listen to a lot of brand-new Aussie music courtesy of Amrap, which is connected with my previous Radio Presenting days until now.

I've got 3,934 songs (ie. 236+ hours' worth [that's almost TEN Days of continuous playing!]) of just contemporary Aussie music on one playlist alone to enjoy as it is. Niiiice.

[ ] That's not counting all the months' worth of other material I can listen to!

[ ] Of course, I don't select all of Amrap's new music, just the stuff I enjoy.

💥 I've rediscovered an English online radio station that plays album music from the 60's-80's... right up my street [grins].

💥 Aussie 70's classic Richard Clapton's three albums (remastered in 2024):

- Goodbye Tiger (1977)

- Great Escape (1982)

- Prussian Blue (1973)

💥 The Red Button is sublime 60s-inspired pop. I love their juicy melodic harmonies, jangly electric 12-strings and fun loopy basslines - all feels so uplifting and positive. Instant mood lifter. I have all their albums, even an unplugged one, saved as a playlist. Check 'em out.

💥 I'm loving Shakti's blend of Indian-Jazz Fusion on the five albums I have of theirs.

💥 Sherbet - "On With the Show" (1973): their second album, and a huge happy memory from my childhood. In Australia's mid-70s youth culture, it was "Sherbet Vs Skyhooks" - and I went with Sherbet [grins]. I really enjoyed their pop sensibilities and great songwriting - still do... their glam/glitter look was horrid, let's admit it (Oh... then there's some unforgivable shmaltz/horrors in there as well!). This album, tho, highlights a lot of their earlier prog-rock elements well. Oh... yes, I have all their albums as well... "I am not ashamed"! [laffs]

💥 I've enjoyed Eric Clapton's 1974 laid-back album "461 Ocean Boulevard". Hey, I turn 60-yo this year... 'laid back' is fine by me [laffs].

A bit more Clapton has appeared on my speakers this week (mid-January 2024), with his 1977 album "Slowhand", along with his iconic 1992 "Unplugged" album. Nice mellow grooves.

💥 If you have never heard the Finn Brothers' 2004 album, "Everyone Is Here": do yourself a favour! Seriously: Five out of Five!

💥 Michael Jackson's 1991 album "Dangerous" is a 5/5 for me already - an old fav of mine; the three cloyingly puerile ballads don't detract overall from the amazing quality of the new jack swing... I can even get past all his vocal 'hiccups' & inflictions etc.

'The Giving Tree' - Mal's 2025/26 Photographic Project

Across the road from me lies a little park with a small playground. There lies a small "Prunus" tree* that the local council cropped heavily at the start of winter 2022. The park has a series of about 10 different trees of this type, varying in age and size. This particular one is just the one that's closest to me. 🌳

I will try to take a weekly/regular photo to show its seasonal progress this summer.

*The Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera) has been widely cultivated as a street tree in the temperate regions of Australia.

I love its deep maroon-coloured leaves. It hasn't fruited at all, perhaps as it is still too young?

I water it most summer days (twice or more at a time), hobbling across with my walking stick and trusty 9-litre/2.3 gal blue plastic watering can... "I'm the crazy old man who talks to the tree!" 🤣

I know... it's not much but... [grins]

Here are my gorgeous scenic panoramas, from the front of my little place. Living in rural Australia sure has its perks.

My elevation/altitude here is 675 meters / 2,215 feet above sea level.

Those distant hilltop ranges, off to the east? I've seen them in every manner of weather conditions... from bushfire, shrouded in fog, glowing golden purple with reflected sunset light, to covered in snow!

I am very appreciative and grateful to be able to live here... it's over nine years now - wow!

(The 6 front steps are ironically noted; however, when I first moved in 9+ years ago, I had no idea the extra handrail alongside them would need to come into play for me [laffs] ).

3 days before Xmas 2022

My neighbour's tree (an "Acmena smithii" 'Lilly Pilly' ) overlooks my compact backspace, which is currently fully abloom and wonderfully saturated with the sound of bees busy collecting pollen for their hives across the road at St. Joseph's Mount.

At first, I thought their buzzing was the unseasonably-wrong sound of distant race cars atop Mt Panorama! [laffs]. These bees are completely harmless to me, and I happily welcome them.

Conversely, sometimes in winter, we can get the all-day "Sea Poop" thick fogs!

Snow

We occasionally get SNOW... (for my Northern Hemisphere friends, I know here it's nothing but a light dusting for you... but exciting for us here in town).

Normally it can snow heavily on the high ridge tops surrounding town in Winter, closing the main highway etc. It rarely snows here in town... we're only c.615 meters/c.2,015 feet above sea level where I live.

These were taken at my home on 17 July 2015, before sunrise. My neighbour (at that time) was out playing it as well, as she said she'd 'never seen snow before!'

I wish I'd taken some pics a bit later: there were young families all up and down the street building snowmen together! So cool (no pun intended!) Like I said: it rarely snows here in town. It hasn't snowed here in town since 2015.

Bushfire Smoke

10 March 2023: There's a bushfire burning c. 50 km/30 miles away near Hill End [all is quite safe here], but the SMOKE is currently pouring across town. These pics from my front landing do not do justice as to how thick it is... then there's the smell...

Throughout the Summer of 2019-2020, there were massive bushfires, some just 60kms / 40 miles away, but the SMOKE here was incredible!

This is what it looked like from my place! Simply unfathomable!

18 July 2023: I wonder what the local council are going to put here, in the middle of the little park/playground across the road from me? My guess is a park bench. (My life is SO exciting, huh? lol)

FIRST! (Laffs)

There is a small tree in my little park [planted by the council, just before winter 2018], that I totter across to a few times a week, with a big plastic watering can... just to keep the water up to it during those dryer months.

I have no idea what sort of tree it is... maybe a miniature cherry, plum or something? Update: I've been told it's a "Prunus". The local council pruned it back in late June 2002. It continues to thrive.

Update: 26 July 2023 (mid-winter)

The local council parks guys neatly trimmed "The Giving Tree" in preparation for its summer growth.

► Right across the road is the historic "St. Joseph's Mount".

► And, of course, just over the hill behind me, about 1 km/mile away to the west, is our Iconic "Mount Panorama". As I live on the back side of the hill, thankfully I never hear the cars when the race car events are on.

⭐ Beatles '64 (2024) (Directed by Martin Scorsese) is a fascinating doco on the social aspect of the Beatles' first live appearances in the USA.

⭐ The Constant Gardener (2005) is a wonderful dramatic thriller looking for justice in Africa's corrupt systems. Wonderful acting, beautifully photographed.

Me: 4/ 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐ The Nightingale (2018) is a wonderful (albeit bloody) dramatic look at Tasmanian Irish convicts's justice vs uncaring English authority. It's not for everyone's tastes, but it's an Aussie movie worth a look.

Me: 4/ 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐ I don't usually watch these police/detective/crime thrillers. This was well played, shot, acted, and directed, with a good story and characters. The Departed (2006) was all these things. Yet another Martin Scorsese classic for me.

4 out of five for me. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐ Poor Things (2023) - Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe

For great cinema, this is a great visual feast. A somewhat strange, bizarre unconventional film, albeit with great acting, awesome visuals, framing, lensing and atmosphere.

Difficult to describe, be it an alternate 'mad scientist / Frankenstein's Monster'; an innocent in the wild, "an insanely enjoyable fairy tale", yet fascinating to behold (even the R-rated 'adult' scenes are good cinema).

Not for everyone, I'm sure. I enjoyed it simply because it is so different.

4 out of five for me. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐ Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone is a Martin Scorsese epic detailing injustice. It's a long (the pacing is deliberate) but rewarding watch.

⭐ As I've said, "Any film that leaves a strong emotional response/impression is a sign of good moviemaking". That's this film for me: Civil War (2024) with Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura. It's a hyper-realistic dystopian thriller involving the role of photojournalism in the front line. I don't normally watch movies like this, but this explores great character studies. Not for the faint-hearted.

Me: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐ I finally watched the classic/iconic anti-war masterpiece directed by Stanley Kubrick, Paths of Glory (1957), with Kirk Douglas. I'd never managed to watch it before. Great cinematic masterpiece highlighting the futility of war and military justice.

Operation Mincemeat (2021) with Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen is good standard-fare WW2 drama.

⭐ Paddington 2 (2017) is a great 'it just feels good' movie.

⭐ Inside Out 2 (2024) is the latest glorious Pixar installation. Great story, characters, art, etc etc... even great quotes. Truly memorable.

The Secret of NIMH (1982) is a beautifully old-school hand-animated fantasy adventure film, although it didn't quite go where I thought it might. Still a worthy watch for the animation.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2002) - fun Choen Brothers folk comedy

I watched one of the worst movies of all time, just for the fun of it. Maniac (1932) is a b/w sci-fi horror thing that's so bad it's good!

After some serious drama (below), it was time for some fun silly fluffy entertainment:

"Team America - World Police" (2004) is a silly fun satire using Thunderbird-style marionettes in some seriously absurd situations. Great mindless dribble.

Then I had a good Disney time, revisiting the magical delight of "Moana" (2016).

After watching "Wolf Hall" (below), I thought to rewatch the series "The Tudors" (2007-2010) over May.

It's a TV-ized version of the life of King Henry VIII. Good TV, but not history. Good acting, costumes etc. But yeah... the actual history seems (to me) far more entertaining than some of the inventions they've created here.
Oh yes, King Henry was a complex bastard, surrounded my so many people with various agendas. Sheesh.
Me: 2-1/2 out of 5: ⭐⭐+

⭐ I've just rewatched the 2015 6-part TV Series "Wolf Hall". Based on the viewpoint of Thomas Cromwell's service to both Cardinal Wolsey and then England's King Henry VIII in the 16th century.

I love Mark Rylance's understand acting, and the great arrogance of Damian Lewis' portrayal of a petty and bi-polar King Henry.
I enjoy these historical-type dramas.

⭐ I rewatched the terrifyingly-excellent TV Mini Series "Chernobyl" (2019) again. "Terrifying" as whilst this is very accurate and graphic, in reality: IT WAS FAR WORSE!
This is a must-see: great acting, storytelling, direction, cinematography etc etc.

⭐ Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) (Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis) is a gorgeous absurdist surreal philosophical comedy-drama I just enjoyed. An Academy Award winner (deservedly)... beware of the Bagel [laffs].

Wow, just wow. I'd heard a lot about it, and it was worth it. Not one of those goofy Superhero movies at all; great acting, atmosphere, characters, story; thought-provoking stuff, for sure.

Another flick I had in my DVD folders that I pulled out randomly, having not watched it as yet. Totally unexpected how good I found it.

Fascinating graphic crime movie about fatherhood, and the consequences of crime. Great acting, great atmospheres and cinematography. Although I rarely watch things like this, I enjoyed it.

Beetlejuice (1988) - Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton

Classic fun silly dark comedy horror, perfect Tim Burton flick. I'd watched it years ago, and it'd been on my 're-watch list' for ages... so I did, and muchly enjoyed.
The Dinner Scene is worth the price of admission alone.

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) - Mia Farrow, Jeff Daniels

A fascinating (altho deliberately hammily-acted) film about the fantasy of the cinema, the allure of the fictions it portrays and about distinguishing real dreams from false dreams.
It didn't quite 'do it' for me, but I wholly appreciate what Woody was trying to do.

I’ve been re-watching a few episodes a day over this month, even though I watched it a few years ago – I love it, despite its flaws. I adore its originality, writing, acting, setting, and tone, and their exploration and creative use of ethics and philosophy. And great characters... and some very fun very silly moments!
I mean, dayum… how can I become so emotionally attached to fictional characters, that I always cry at the end? To me, that is the mark of good writing.

28 Days Later (2002) - Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris

An updated attempt at a "Day of the Triffids" apocalyptic zombie horror thing; not my cup of tea (I've never been into horror/zombie etc flicks; just thought I'd give this one a go all the same), but there some beautiful poetic shots of water falling and a deceased London.
Me: 2.5/5 ⭐⭐+

The Zone of Interest (2023) - Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller

An icy-cold dispassionate domestic look at life outside of Auschwitz; somehow it displays the entire "Banality of Evil" around this atrocious time in history. Brilliantly done, but still very unsettling; definitely not for everyone.

"The Lobster" is an offbeat absurdist surreal deadpan dark comedy drama film that explores human behavior and relationships, touching on topics like social pressure and conformity, made with a dynamic artistic quality.
Basic Premise: It is set in a dystopian near-future society where being single is prohibited... a world in which love is mandatory, and people who don’t find a match are turned into animals.
The film's satirical style presents a world that seems absurd and irrational, while also making it believable for the audience.

Air Conditioner

I am SO thankful for my little 1970s-ish wall-mounted air conditioner that came with this place. While these pics below aren't it, it's almost exactly the same. It has never skipped a beat over these 10 years I have happily lived here... and it has saved my MS from going insane on those mega-hot Aussie summer days. Yay.

I always budget so that I have a good amount of credit in my electricity account, so I never feel negative financially about running it when I need to. Phew.

I rarely have to run it on full fan, as I just use my own pedestal fans to do the work, and half the cost [wink]. My place is a comfortable, cosy size for me, and I love it here.

On those stinking hot summer days (and nights), with almost zero humidity here, my two small (desktop-sized) evaporative water coolers are a true lifesavers for me. Yes, they actually work very well.

Recorded on my phone from my front door, with only one edit (31 seconds in), as I moved the phone. Total length: 1:08

This is a sound recording I made of a Magpie sitting on my roof... I've tried to record it before, but it always flew off as soon as I got near the door. The recording ended as it started to rain, and the sound of the rain on my tin roof obliterated any other sounds.

It only seems to 'sing' like this as it rains. Interesting!

I've heard it three or four times now recently, and it's sounded much louder and more diverse than this... it has even done a complete Kookaburra call!

Bathurst now has its own "Magpie Map", to keep an eye on the 'swoopers'!

This map was created to help the community avoid magpies - leave them alone, and they’ll likely leave you alone.

Mal says: I've never had the pleasure of being swooped by a Magpie, thankfully. As crazy as it sounds, I always talk and say hello to the local magpies here, all year round, so they recognize me. It seems to work for me.

How the heck do you measure the length of an active goldfish? [laffs] Katia is now about 15 cm/5.9 inches in length, and Thoon is c. 13 cm/5.1 inches.

I bought Thoon and Katia a new tank-cleaning vacuum, and it works like a charm! I just run the emptying hose out the front door, which empties onto the front lawn - no problem! Now cleaning/changing the water in their tank is much easier and simpler for lil' ol' me [yay!]. It even came with its own video, tho my machine is red [which, of course we all know, just goes faster! lol].

Now their tank looks clear and pristine every day... sure they don't appreciate the intrusion while the cleaning is taking place, but they do after it's all finished. They've never thanked me tho, either, ungrateful buggers [laffs].

I have to laugh... cleaning the tank mid-summer is better than mid-winter, as their water is BLOODY FREEZING! 🥶

I caught myself making an unconscious Spoonerism today - instead of 'Thoon and Katia', it came out as 'Thatia and Koon'... I made myself laugh.

I gave their fish tank a jolly good cleaning out today, including rinsing out the gravel etc. Poor Katia was NOT happy when she got momentarily stuck in the vacuum hose nozzle (she's fine)... plus neither of them was happy being placed in a small bowl during the cleaning process... it took them a while after it was all done to look me straight in the eye again [laffs]. Sturdy buggers they are.

I think I saved the life of one of my goldfish today. Katia got a small pebble stuck in her mouth; she (I should not assume the gender of my goldfish, huh? lol. As it is, I have no idea what either of them are!) would have starved to death, as she had been unable to remove it!

I grabbed my small net, and of course, being the feisty Alpha fish she is, she put up a fight while I tried to catch her and try to do something to help. Thankfully, in her moment, the small pebble popped out all OK! Phew! No harm done.

I know it doesn't sound like much, but I enjoy my two goldfishies. I've been enjoying this pair's company now for 1 year 10 months [grins]. Their "Birthday" is 20 Sept 2021.

I attempted to take a picture of one of my two goldfish, "Thoon", because he's a bit of an oddity: he is a normal Comet, but he has three tail fins!

➽► So, why "Thoon"?

Short answer: it's a fun, silly, random name (very me...).

Long answer: In a band many years ago, we used to invent words for sounds (for silly fun)... 'Thoon' was "the sound of a cricket ball bowled just past off-stump..." 🏏

Much later, I discovered that 'Thoon' was the name of a Giant in Homer's "Illiad"! 😄

I know... it's bizarre, random and absurd... perfect!

➽► So, why "Katia"?

Basically - I just really liked that name for many years!

Answer: YES!

It's when they start talking back that... er um... [laffs]

MRI Scan and Lesions

I had a brain and neck MRI scan in December 2017, to see if they could find a cause for some weird effects I was experiencing at the time.

They immediately identified demyelination in my spine (in my upper neck), as well as some small "lesions" throughout my brain.

These were classic markers for MS, my neurologist finally concluded, after many and varied tests.

The name "multiple sclerosis" refers to the scars (sclerae – better known as plaques or lesions) that form in the nervous system - in particular in the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Mine are mainly in my neck and small fragments in the brain.

The small white lesions look something like this in my brain (nb. not my MRI scan).

I may have had these small brain lesions for years, she said, and not even been aware of them or their effects. My long-time slight hand tremors may have been one of those - but we'll never know!

It was absolutely fascinating seeing my own MRI brain scan results! My neurologist showed me what was happening, as she took me level-by-level through the pictures of my brain! A very surreal (yet positive) experience.

I'll need an ongoing MRI scan every c.2 years or so, unless there is a flare-up.

I appreciate a lot of people do not enjoy the whole MRI experience - tho I have always found them to be stress-free. In fact, the whole whirring/clunking/clicks they make, make me laugh, as they sound like bad 'Kraftwerk' techno music or something! [laffs]

Now they let you wear a pair of small headphones that play music to drown out the sound - nice!

Picnic in the Park 4 April 2025

On Friday afternoon, 4 April 2025, almost 100 concerned members of the Bathurst community, as well as local Regional Council members, enjoyed a pleasant and relaxed time together at South Bathurst's Milltown Park, catching up on the latest developments regarding the contentious local housing proposal.

This was a free community event organised by the local community for the local community. There was great friendly, positive intermingling from everybody.

A tree was planted (with Council permission) in Milltown Park, South Bathurst, as a sign of hope for a sensible outcome, and for future generations long after we are all gone.

Thanks to Alex from Garden Starters Nursery for bringing down a glorious maple from his College Rd sale. I’ve been passing that lonely seat that was placed out in the blazing sun thinking why would anyone sit there through summer if they wanted to avoid skin cancer? The canopy and autumn colour will lift everyone’s spirits and be a beacon of hope for South Bathurst. Please pour a bottle of water on it as you walk past until she gets established. Thank you Kate and Steve for digging that hole 🌳🍂🎉🍁🤩🌧🙏🏼😍

I used to Row as a bowman in a successful school boys Eight a squillion years ago.

(Not us, but it could have been!)

THE ultimate team sport - loved it.

We were Public (not Private) High School rowers from Balgowlah Boys High School in 1980; compared to them, we were scum... yet we whooped their asses! We used borrowed boats from Mosman Rowing Club (The Spit, Sydney).

Amazing luck, too: our coach was the ex-Australian Olympic rowing coach ('Doc'). Our best time at training over 2,000 meters (race length) was 10 seconds short of Olympic time... bloody good crew work for a motley assortment of 16-year-olds!

'Doc' loved that, as a bowman, I would tap-in [ie. dip in my oar blade] fractionally early... apparently, a very good skill for a bowman to have. Catch-22... I had no idea I was doing it! [laffs].

Then there's the never-to-be-forgotten sound of the bubbles flowing under the hull as we'd just glide...

We used to train on the upreaches of the gorgeous Middle Harbour (between The Spit and Roseville Bridge)... MILES of some gloriously smooth, unspoilt and spectacular (and little-known) water.

All good memories, even those early morning practices in the freezing rain!

I always watch the rowing events when the Olympics etc are on.
