The Huawei Honor Holly has a tongue-twister name, but its funny name aside, this phone is the Chinese company’s attempt to enter the highly contested budget smartphone segment. And this segment is now keenly contested and very competitive. Look at the competition here, the Moto E, Redmi 1S and Zenfone 4 which have similar if not better specifications. Read on to find out how it fares.

Look and feel

The Huawei Honor Holly has a plain and uninspiring design that won’t really turn any heads. It has a dual-tone finish with a glossy white removable rear cover and a completely black front. The 5-inch display is surrounded by thick bezels which gives the phone a bulky feel when compared to other devices with similar-sized screens. The glossy rear attracts a lot of dust and fingerprints, we had to wipe it quite often. Despite that, gripping the phone wasn’t tough at all.

Above the display one can find the front camera, earpiece and all the sensors. Three capacitive buttons for navigation are below it. The problem with the buttons is that they are not backlit, and as a result using the Honor Holly in darkness is a messy and difficult experience. The power button and volume rocker are on the right edge.

The 3.5mm jack sits on top while the Micro-USB port is on the bottom. The rear houses the primary camera, flash, and speaker grill. There is no groove to help pull off the rear cover and we had to use the cutout for the Micro-USB port to get a good hold on it. Beneath the cover are the battery, a slot for the microSD card and two Micro-SIM card slots.

Specifications

Specifications is where the Honor Holly kills its competition and top here is its storage capacity. Apart from the 16GB of internal space, the phone also accepts microSD cards of up to 32GB. This should be more than sufficient for most users. The phone also has 1 GB of RAM. The SoC is a Mediatek MT6582 with four CPU cores clocked at 1.3GHz and a Mali-400MP2 GPU. There is an 8-megapixel primary rear camera and a 2-megapixel secondary front one for selfies.

The Honor Holly has provision for two Micro-SIM cards, but only one can connect to a 3G network. The other connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.0. Along with this, the Honor Holly has a 2000mAh battery.

Huawei doesn’t specify the type of glass used on top of the 5-inch 720p IPS LCD panel. After being spoilt by modern OGS screens, we could immediately spot how deeply recessed the display was on the Honor Holly. The result is that hitting app icons doesn’t feel as natural as it would on, for example, a Moto E. The 3D page-turn animations don’t look that interesting. The 294ppi density of the screen supports really crisp text and images. Viewing angles are really good for a phone that is priced so competitively. Bad thing is that we found that sunlight legibility wasn’t great.

Software / Operating System

The phone runs Android 4.4.2 with the Huawei’s Emotion UI 2.3 skin on top. However, unlike its far more expensive flagship counterpart, the Honor Holly is devoid of many features. For example, the magazine-style lock screen is missing, and all app icons are lined up on the home screen itself rather than in a separate app drawer. The rounded colorful icons look slightly outdated now.

The Emotion UI 3.0 has to change that with a flatter design language in line with current trends or it will lose the battle of the budget phones. The UI is a big letdown. Huawei keeps the bloat-ware restricted to the Flipkart and Flipkart eBooks apps, because it is sold only on the e-commerce website.

Camera

The camera app is once again the same default Gingerbread app we’ve seen on a lot of budget phones, and it is not very intuitive to use. The shots we captured in bright sunlight using the 8-megapixel primary camera had blown-out highlights and issues with exposure. The HDR mode only made things messier and bad. In this price range the camera performance of the Redmi 1S is still superior. The sensor on this camera is not good for low-light, but we were surprised when we played 1080p video clips captured with this phone. They actually had great details. The 2-megapixel front camera is bad, and images taken with it looked rather soft, dreamy, and very unclear.

Performance

Budget phones generally function smoothly and not lag too much. Thankfully, the Honor Holly doesn’t disappoint in this area. We did face occasional lagging and notable stutters at times but this didn’t disrupt the overall experience of using the phone. It managed to play games such as Temple Run 2 with relative ease as well.

We ran our regular suite of benchmarks. The Honor Holly scored 7,102 and 18,609 in Quadrant and AnTuTu respectively.

It scored only 9.2fps in GFXbench and 3159 points in the 3DMark Ice Storm test.

The Huawei Honor Holly played all our video files including the heavily encoded 40mbps one. The sound from the loudspeaker is really low.

OPPO Find 7 is an astounding smartphone by the Chinese manufacturer. However, it falls on high-end segment and has less traction from the buyers. We got our hands on with the device and here is our detailed OPPO Find 7 review.

India’s mobile industry is crowded and we are witnessing exponential growth year-on-year. To bring in more competition, leading Chinese smartphone brand OPPO entered India this year with their flagship model N1. After that the company has released 10 smartphones ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40,000.

Coming to the device we are speaking about today, Find 7 is a bumped version of Find 7a. It carries the same design principles and improved hardware specifications. For all these additional features, is it really worth to buy this phone for Rs.37499/- ? Let’s take a look at it.

• 5.5 inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) with 538 PPI screen
• Color OS 1.2 based on Android 4.3 (upgradable)
• 3GB RAM
• 32GB Internal memory, expandable with up to 128GB
• 3000mAh removable battery
• 13MP Rear and 5MP Front Camera
• NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi Connectivity options

HARDWARE

Oppo might just be a yet-another Chinese smartphone manufacturer. But, their handsets carry a premium build quality and so there is no doubt about the hardware section of Find 7.

The device we received was kind of made for left-handed use. The power / lock button was on the left hand side and volume rockers on the right. On the top we have 3.5mm headphone jack and on the bottom there is a USB slot for charging and file transfers. The front camera, earpiece and an almost invisible array of sensors sit above the display.

The best part of this device is the removable battery. Although it looks like a moulded piece, due to which the user will have to spend some time in finding the removal of the back panel. Also, there is a slot for SD card which can allow up to 128GB of external card.

Rather than the traditional physical buttons, Find 7 has got capacitive buttons for the navigation.

For the notifications, there is a pulsating blue light bar below the navigation buttons. This looks pretty nice.

Powerful processor and more RAM provides a better performance to the gamers while playing high-end games.

BUILD QUALITY / ERGONOMICS

Despite being a plastic body, the metal edge brings in a premium look to the device. The back panel makes the phone low-priced by adopting the look and texture of carbon fiber. It is kind of slippery to hold and a lot of time we did drop the handset.

SOFTWARE /OPERATING SYSTEM

Oppo has its own forked version of Android OS, Color OS. This variant has a lot of features. The list grows bigger and bigger as we describe.

Find 7 is running on Color OS 1.2 which has an Android 4.3 as base. The saddest part of the Oppo is OS updates. They are very much slow in upgrading the OS. Apart from that, the OS carries some uniqueness which we rarely see on other devices.

Oppo has modified the notification panel and turned it into the gesture panel. Sliding down from the top left side, the user will be taken to gesture panel and by drawing some gesture the applications will be activated. The default gestures allow you to draw a circle to open the camera, or a V to turn on the flashlight, for example. You can add your own. For example, a W to open WhatsApp messenger.

The same gesture does work even when the screen is off. Similar to OnePlus One, you can slide two fingers down to play a song, draw an arrow to skip or rewind tracks. Also, double tapping the screen will wake up the device when it’s off.

DISPLAY AND UI

The 5.5-inch “Quad HD” display — that’s 2,560×1,440 pixels, the same as four 720p screens, is bright and brilliant, and usable even under bright sunlight. It carries a higher pixel per inch (538ppi) ratio than the Apple’s Retina Display. So the display looks fabulous. Oppo Find 7 is one of the early phones to carry 2k resolution before LG G3 and others joined the bandwagon.

The Color OS UI is a visual uplift from regular Android. It doesn’t feel heavy and is mostly lag-free. However, the color combination of the stock Color OS looks pale. Adding better HD wallpapers will show the true colors of the beautiful screen.

CAMERA

This is one of our favorite sections and Oppo Find 7 performs very well! The camera has amazing features to beautify your photos with focus and clarity. It comes with a 13MP camera in the back and a 5MP shooter in the front. Both features an f/2.0 aperture which means you’ll be able to capture good low-light shots.

Oppo has added a special Ultra-HD mode, which snaps four pictures and then combines them into a supersize 50-megapixel shot. This works great during the heavy light. Apart from this, Find 7 camera has plenty of options to play with. It also has ability to shoot in RAW mode, which we rarely see on any smartphone.

Call quality

There is no doubt about the call quality with this device. The other caller can hear your voice clear and crisp. On our end also the audio volume is pretty loud enough hearing the other caller’s voice in crowded places as well. We didn’t face any call drops during the course of our review.

SOUND CLARITY

Loud and audible are enough to describe Find 7’s sound clarity. Even at the least volume, the sound is clear enough to be audible in the open space. The loudspeaker on the back side of the phone is very loud and gives out a clear sound.

BATTERY

The Oppo Find 7 packs a 3000mAh battery which comes under low side of the device. Carrying a huge 5.5inch screen and 2k resolution, the device struggles to get through the day on a single charge. If the 3G is on continuously and use the camera now and then, the battery life goes for a toss.

However, one cool thing about the phone is that it has rapid charging. Oppo’s patented Vooc charging system is able to juice up the phone from 0 to 75 percent in just 30 minutes. But you will need to use the Oppo’s adapter which comes with the box and the same doesn’t work when connected to PC.

PERFORMANCE AND BENCHMARKS

Being a high-end device, Oppo Find 7 gives you a high performance.  No lag, apps opening and closing takes fractions of a second. We did perform some benchmark tests on this device and it scored pretty well.

It scored 44030 on AnTuTu benchmarking and 22831 on Quadrant. This is similar to the scores of OnePlus One.
