The Toshiba Folio 100 media tablet offers a rich multimedia experience by including support for Flash 10.1, WLAN and Bluetooth.

Toshiba Europe GmbH presented its new media tablet – FOLIO 100 based on the Android OS. The 10.1-inch personal media tablet is for people looking for a 100% portable and versatile device that is always with them as part of their digital life. The FOLIO 100 comes with a wide range of applications and services for media, web browsing and social networking and offers a rich multimedia experience. Easy and fun to use, the FOLIO 100 has a high quality graphic interface developed by Toshiba for Android 2.2 (Froyo). The tablet PC will be released in the last quarter of 2010 in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Offering a range of connectivity options, the FOLIO 100 is equipped with an SD card slot, HDMI connector, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a Mobile Broadband (3G) version will follow soon. It has many useful preinstalled applications such as: Opera Mobile (web browser), FBReader (e-book reader), Document To Go (office suite), Evernote (notes), Adobe Flash 10.1 and Fring (an application which allows video calls to family and friends with the built-in webcam).

Toshiba Market Place

The media tablet also contains the Toshiba Market Place, a service that offers access to various download options for multimedia content, services, and applications. The Music Place of 7Digital offers access to one of the most comprehensive music libraries and allows synchronization with different devices. The Radio Place provides access to IP radio services. Through App Place, users can also download applications compatible with Folio 100.

Being 14mm thin and weighing 760g, the FOLIO 100 has a powerful processor (Nvidia Tegra 2) which provides the ideal balance between high performance and low battery. Its battery with over seven hours of operating time, allows the tablet to work nearly for a whole day without recharging. The instant-on mode allows the tablet to be able to boot up and be ready for use within 30 seconds. With storage capacity of up to 16GB, users can store music, videos, photos, e-mails and other data or to expand the storage capacity with an SD card.

Toshiba has already created a one-stop destination (www.toshibatouch.eu) for developers where they can find support for FOLIO100 application development.

So I decided to have a look at the latest Backtrack release (Backtrack 4 R1) which is claimed to be the best version released so far from the backtrack community. With the new Linux kernel version 2.6.34 and with significant overall improvements, this release is worth checking out. I always use the virtual machine option so that to play with it and then install the image on a hard disk by its own. Let us see below how I installed Backtrack 4 R1 on a VMWare virtual machine:

The specifications of my hardware and software are the following:

Laptop DELL (core i3 with 4GB RAM)

Win7 64-bit Professional

VMWARE Workstation version 6.5.4

STEPS:

1. Download file from http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/

File downloaded is bt4-r1-vm.tar.bz2 (around 2.5 GBytes)

2. Check the file with md5.exe tool to verify that MD5 is correct. This is important because such big files sometimes get corrupted when downloaded and also to verify the integrity of the file.

3. Uncompress the image with WinRAR (it took some time for winrar to open the archive – Be patient here.)

4. In VMWARE go to File>Open and select the virtual machine (BT4-R1) which you extracted above.

5. I then selected “Edit Virtual machine settings” and increased the memory from 768MB to 1024MB.

6. Then click on “Power on the virtual machine”
If you get a message that “This virtual machine may have been moved or copied” I selected “I copied it”.

7. After the Virtual machine boots up, you will get a prompt:

bt login:

Use root/toor as initial username/password

You will get the root prompt:

root@bt:~#

Now we must change the root password to something really strong.

root@bt:~# passwd
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

8. Now do the fix-splash as advised by the backtrack website:

root@bt:~# fix-splash

And then reboot

root@bt:~# reboot now

9. After the machine boots up, start the graphical interface:

root@bt:~# startx

DONE

Some other notes:

I like to have my virtual machine with direct access to the network interface of my host computer, so I always go to the virtual machine settings (“Edit Virtual machine settings”) and change the network adapter from “NAT” to “Bridged Mode“. With that, the LAN interface of the Backtrack in the virtual machine will have direct access to the network. If you have a DHCP server in the network, the Backtrack system will receive IP from the network, or otherwise you can configure static IP. Let’s see how to do both options below:

IP address from DHCP Server

ifconfig eth0 up
dhclient eth0

Static IP

ifconfig eth0 100.100.100.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default gw 100.100.100.2 eth0

Also, you need to edit the /etc/resolv.conf file and change the nameserver line to add your DNS IP address.

I live in a sunny country in Europe and my house has a big backyard where I, my wife and two kids spend a lot of time outside almost any season of the year. We are also music lovers and we have tons of CDs and MP3s stored on my computer. I was looking for a solution to somehow broadcast music to the backyard of my house from my music library. We all know the difficulties to stream audio and music from an electronic source (PC with MP3s for example) to an analog receiver (FM Radio for example). This is not a problem at all if you look at the Whole House FM Transmitter which can receive audio from almost any audio source and transmit it to any FM receiver.

At the beginning I was a little skeptical about getting an FM Transmitter for broadcasting music in my house and backyard. The reason was that most FM Transmitters are relatively weak in terms of coverage and they are mainly for use in your car. After testing the Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0 I was relieved to find out that their claims of 150 feet (50 meters) radius coverage are actually true.

Some Specifications

Before continuing with my review for the Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0, let us see some of the specs of this device below:

Receives as input any audio source (MP3 players, iPod, Home Stereo, TV, DVD, DVR, Satellite Radio, Computers PC or MAC, Microphone etc).

Transmits to any FM Receiver.

Covers the entire FM Band Range from 88.1 to 107.9 MHz in steps of 0.1 MHz. This means that you can easily find any unoccupied frequency to transmit your signal.

Use it anywhere you want (Home, Back Yard, Car, Office, Garage, Boat, exercise room, pool side etc).

The new Whole House FM Transmitter version 2.0 is built from the ground up with better features, versatility and reliability.

Compact Size and light weight (a little bit larger than the size of a deck of playing cards).

Covers 150 feet distance but still satisfies the FCC part 15 regulations.

Four ways to power the device (AC Outlet, 3 “AA” Batteries, Computer USB Port and 12V Car Adapter).

It includes all necessary cables and adaptors to start using it immediately (AC adapter, 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo audio cable, USB power cable, 12V DC car power adapter, stereo Y cable, RCA Jack Stereo audio cable).

If you purchase, you will get also 4 Free Bonuses such as Lavalier Microphone, Free USPS Shipping within USA, 1 Year Warranty and Lifetime customer support.

30-Day Money Back Guarantee.

More Features from the official site HERE.

Testing done on Coverage

My first test on how long the unit can transmit was pretty simple. I just connected a CD player with the FM transmitter using the 1/8” stereo audio cable and selected an unused FM frequency in my area. Power for the transmitter was from the AC outlet. Now, because I live in Europe, we use the even numbered frequencies so I selected 104.6 MHz on my FM radio receiver. After setting up the same frequency on the FM Transmitter, I was able to receive the audio strong and clear on my radio from the living room of my house to the far side of my backyard (around 120 feet away).

My second testing was a little more demanding. I went down to my basement with my laptop computer and connected the FM Transmitter to my laptop using the audio 1/8” jack (one cable end on the headphone jack of the laptop and the other end on the FM Transmitter). I used also the USB cable to power up the transmitter from a free USB port of the laptop. Then, I fired up a playlist with MP3 songs so that to be broadcasted by the transmitter. I went out again to the far side of my back yard to test out the reception. That was more than 120 feet away. I still could hear the music with a lot of noise however, but if you consider that the signal had to pass through the walls of the basement and over to the backyard, the bad quality was expected.

Other Testing Performed

I wanted also to test the audio quality transmitted with different types of audio sources and with different types of power to the unit. Keep in mind that the way you power the device and the quality of the audio source play important role in the output quality of the signal transmitted.

So I did the following tests:

Power Used for FM Transmitter

Audio Source

Audio Quality Received on FM Receiver (100 feet away with no obstacles)

AC Outlet

CD Player

Good quality

USB port on laptop

From headphone jack on laptop

Average (with some static noise)

USB port on laptop

CD Player

Good quality

“AA” Batteries

CD Player

Excellent quality

“AA” Batteries

From headphone jack on laptop

Average quality (but without static noise)

Basically the combination of laptop USB Port as power together with the laptop headphone jack as audio source was the worst because of the electrical issues from getting power and audio from the same source.

Conclusion

The reviewed Whole House FM Transmitter really stands up to its name as a “Whole House” coverage system. If you are in the same situation as me, that is you like to listen to streaming music from a CD player or from your laptop without being bound by distance from the music source, then the Whole House FM system is a great device to broadcast your music on any FM receiver within your home vicinity. Its price tag has also dropped considerably, so why don’t you take a look at the official website of the product to see if it fits your needs. And don’t forget the free shipping within USA and the 30-Day money back guarantee.

The Cisco Cius, will use the Android operating system from Google, while its battery life will be able to last for eight hours.

According to the company, Cisco Cius testing will begin in 2010, and the device will be available to consumers in 2011. The tablet weighs a little more than a pound, while its screen is seven inches, in contrast to the 9.7-inch screen of iPad. Moreover, Cius will have two cameras, a high resolution in front and a 5 Megapixels camera at the back.

Cius will provide email, instant messaging, internet access with Wi-Fi and 4G. Cisco said that the device is designed to provide professionals the ability to create and share content from any location. “This platform can change the way health professionals treat their patients, merchants provide services to their customers or how universities provide education to their students” said Tony Bates, Senior Vice President of Cisco.

Last month, Dell announced the upcoming release of its own tablet PC called Streak, which will also use Android as operating system. It seems that competition for the Apple’s iPad is heating up in the tablet PC market.

The security problems associated with unsecured WiFi networks when you sit on the beach, cafe, etc., the applications that “show” your geographical location, the information exchanged through social networks etc are hiding serious security threats for your PC and for your personal information as well.

The use of secure wireless networks, encryption or hiding of data on disk to prevent “theft”, and serious precautions during online shopping or banking transactions, are among the practical security measures that users need to follow for protecting their personal information.

With the proliferation of social networks and the numerous applications used to share information via the Internet, PandaLabs, the anti-malware labs of Panda Security, advise users to take additional steps to avoid falling victims to malicious actions during the holidays.

Besides the traditional security measures that are usually taken, “This year, we ask users to pay special attention when sharing information over the Internet, especially when it comes to planning trips using applications, or when using GPS devices to reveal our geographic location to other members of the community. Such information can easily be taken into advantage from those who steal personal data or planning hostile actions” states Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs.

These types of “geo-location” applications are used widely in recent years. Facebook applications such as Doorpl or Trip Advisor (which describes the current location of someone or the desired destination of someone), the Twitter geolocation utility (which shows from which location your tweets are sent), or the location services via GPS mobile devices (iPhone and Android users) are just some examples.

PandaLabs constantly analyze the latest trends in Internet and are able to advise users for their protection throughout the year and more specifically during a massive holiday period like the summer.

If you take your own computer with you on vacation:
- Before you do anything, keep a back up of all your data.
- Make sure you have a reliable and updated antivirus/antimalware protection software and that all necessary security patches are installed.
- In order to mitigate the consequences of theft of your computer, use the encryption technology for information stored on your hard disk, even if such work is tedious and complicated. This will prohibit any access to your files without correct password.
- Clear the temporary files, logs, cookies and password reminders or auto-complete features you use on the browser. This would eliminate the automatic access to webmail, social networks, bank accounts or your favorite online stores.
- Do not connect on unprotected WiFi networks, as you can “get hooked” by hackers who can intercept information shared with your community. Even if you have to pay for network access, it is better and safer to use a secure network you can trust.
- Pay attention to email. The phishing attacks and spam are becoming smarter for stealing sensitive personal data.

If you use another computer on your vacation:
- It’s better not to use someone else computer. You do not know what is installed on this computer. It is possible that PCs in cyber-cafes, hotels or airports, from where you might log into your bank account, etc. are infected by a dangerous Trojan Horse.
- If you do not really have a choice and must go into websites that require your personal credentials, make sure you change them immediately after use in order to minimize the risk.
- Avoid doing online transactions if possible. Remember that any information you enter can be used by another user.
- Do not accept any inducement for storage of personal data offered by many web browsers.
- When you are finished using the computer, delete all temporary files, browser history, the cookies, the log files and any other information stored on computer.
- If you download something on the computer, remember to delete it before turning the computer off.

Using social networks
- Never use the travel planning applications offered by these networks in order to be sure that it is impossible to identify who you are. Do not accept the geolocation detection (geolocation function) in Twitter and do not use this technology in mobile phones.
- Do not reveal your plans for your holidays in chat rooms, IRCs, social communities, etc.
- If you spend time in chat rooms while you’re on vacation, do not disclose any personal or confidential information to someone you don’t know.
- Share the above tips with your children, which are often more open to good faith to share information via the Internet.
- If you notice any suspicious behavior while you are connected to a social network (people with great interest for other people’s destinations, dates, etc.) contact the police. Prevention is always better than cure.

The ASA 5500 series firewall can work as DHCP relay agent which means that it receives DHCP requests from clients on one interface and forwards the requests to a DHCP server on another interface. Usually the DHCP server is located in the same layer 3 subnet with its clients. There are situations however where we have only one DHCP server but several layer 3 networks exist (on different security zones on a Cisco ASA) and dynamic IP allocation is required for those networks as well. With the DHCP relay feature, we can connect the DHCP server on one network zone and have the firewall forward all DHCP requests from the other network zones to the DHCP server.

The diagram below illustrates a simple network scenario with three security zones (network interfaces) and a single DHCP server. The three network zones are inside, outside and DMZ. The DHCP clients are connected to the inside network and the DHCP server on the DMZ network. The DHCP requests from the clients on the inside network will be relayed to the server on the DMZ network. The server will assign IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.0/24 to the clients.

Configuration

!First identify the DHCP server and the interface it Is connected to
ciscoasa# conf t
ciscoasa(config)# dhcprelay server 10.1.1.100 DMZ
ciscoasa(config)# dhcprelay timeout 90

!Now enable the DHCP relay on the inside interface
ciscoasa(config)# dhcprelay enable inside

!Assign the ASA inside interface IP as default gateway for the clients
ciscoasa(config)# dhcprelay setroute inside

Usage Guidelines

You can add up to four DHCP relay servers per interface. You must add at least one dhcprelay server command to the ASA Firewall configuration before you can enter the dhcprelay enable command. You cannot configure a DHCP client on an interface that has a DHCP relay server configured.

You cannot enable DHCP relay under the following conditions:
• You cannot enable DHCP relay and the DHCP relay server on the same interface.
• You cannot enable DCHP relay and a DHCP server (dhcpd enable) on the same interface.

This article describes the user interface and access modes and commands associated with the operation of Cisco ASA 5500 firewall appliances. We assume that you know how to connect to the appliance using a console cable (the blue flat cable with RJ-45 on one end, and DB-9 Serial on the other end) and a Terminal Emulation software (e.g HyperTerminal), and how to use basic Command Line Interface.

SECURITY APPLIANCE ACCESS MODES
A Cisco ASA security appliance has four main administrative access modes:

•	Monitor Mode: Displays the monitor> prompt. A special mode that enables you to update the image over the network or to perform password recovery. While in the monitor mode, you can enter commands to specify the location of a TFTP server and the location of the software image or password recovery binary image file to download. You access this mode by pressing the “Break” or “ESC” keys immediately after powering up the appliance.
•	Unprivileged Mode: Displays the > prompt. Available when you first access the appliance. If the appliance is a Cisco PIX 500 series, the prompt for unprivileged mode is pixfirewall> and if the appliance is the new Cisco ASA 5500 Series, the prompt is ciscoasa>

This mode provides restricted view of the security appliance. You cannot configure anything from this mode. To get started with configuration, the first command you need to know is the enable command. Type enable and hit Enter. The initial password is empty, so hit Enter again to move on the next access mode (Privileged Mode).

ciscoasa> enable

<–Unprivileged Mode

password:

<– Enter a password here (initially its blank)

ciscoasa#

<– Privileged Mode

•	Privileged Mode: Displays the # prompt. Enables you to change the current settings. Any unprivileged command also works in this mode. From this mode you can see the current configuration by using “show running-config”. Still, you cannot configure anything yet until you go to Configuration Mode. You access the Configuration Mode using the configure terminal command from the Privileged Mode.

•	Configuration Mode: This mode displays the (config)# prompt. Enables you to change all system configuration settings. Use exit from each mode to return to the previous mode.

ciscoasa> enable

<– Unprivileged Mode

password:

<– Enter a password here (initially its blank)

ciscoasa# configure terminal

<– Privileged Mode

ciscoasa(config)#

<– Configuration Mode

ciscoasa(config)# exit

ciscoasa# exit

<– Back to Privileged Mode

ciscoasa>

<– Back to Unprivileged Mode

The (config)# mode is sometimes called Global Configuration Mode. Some configuration commands from this mode enter a command-specific mode and the prompt changes accordingly. For example the interface command enters interface configuration mode as shown below:

ciscoasa(config)# interface GigabitEthernet0/1
ciscoasa(config-if)# <– Configure Interface specific parameters

Traditionally, a network firewall is a routed hop that acts as a default gateway for hosts that connect to one of its screened subnets. A transparent firewall (or Layer 2 firewall), on the other hand, acts like a “stealth firewall” and is not seen as a Layer 3 hop to connected devices. The appliance connects the same Layer 3 network subnet on its inside and outside ports, but each interface of the firewall resides in a different Layer 2 Vlan. The Cisco ASA firewall can operate both in Routed Firewall Mode (default mode) or in Transparent Firewall Mode.

Routed Firewall Mode:

See the diagram below for a common network topology of a Cisco ASA firewall working in Routed Mode.

As you can see, there are two different network subnets. Inside network (10.20.20.0/24) and Outside Network (10.10.10.0/24). There must be also two different layer2 vlans (Vlan20 for inside network and Vlan10 for outside network). All hosts residing in internal network must belong to subnet 10.20.20.0 and must have default gateway the internal IP of the ASA (10.20.20.1).

Transparent Firewall Mode:

The diagram below shows an example topology using a Cisco ASA in Layer 2 transparent mode.

As you can see, there is only one Layer 3 network (10.10.10.0/24) BUT there MUST be two different Layer 2 Vlans (Vlan20 for inside zone and Vlan10 for outside zone). All hosts must reside in network range 10.10.10.0 and the devices must have as default gateway the IP address of the outside router (10.10.10.2). Also, a management IP address MUST be configured on the ASA firewall (again within the range of 10.10.10.0). DO NOT specify the management IP address of the ASA as the default gateway for connected devices.

Characteristics of Transparent Mode

•	Transparent firewall mode supports only two interfaces (inside and outside)
•	The firewall bridges packets from one VLAN to the other instead of routing them.
•	MAC lookups are performed instead of routing table lookups.
•	Can run in single firewall context or in multiple firewall contexts.
•	A management IP address is required on the ASA.
•	The management IP address must be in the same subnet as the connected network.
•	Each interface of the ASA must be a different VLAN interface.
•	Even though the appliance acts as a Layer 2 bridge, Layer 3 traffic cannot pass through the security appliance from a lower security level to a higher security level interface.
•	The firewall can allow any traffic through by using normal extended Access Control Lists (ACL).

Initial Configuration

Asa(config)# firewall transparent

!Configure management IP below
Asa(config)# ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0

Asa(config)# interface Ethernet0/0
Asa(config-if)# nameif outside
Asa(config-if)# security-level 0
!
Asa(config)# interface Ethernet0/1
Asa(config-if)# nameif inside
Asa(config-if)# security-level 100
