PageLever Incorporates Real-Time Analytics into its Facebook Analytics App

PageLever, a company that provides analytics tools for Facebook has announced PageLever Now, a tool which allows engagement analytics to be displayed in real-time.
Those who use PageLever now have the ability to promptly see how fans are commenting, liking or sharing content from the page. With a variety of graph features, PageLever enables users to manage and monitor a variety of information in real-time and lapsed time.

As with the earlier version of PageLever, there are graphs that give users the chance to trace fan activity over a span of 48 hours, to see what posts were most popular.
A real time graph will show information about fan engagement without having to wait a a few days. This will give companies the chance to engage with users more efficiently and more quickly on what kind of information is most popular on the page.

Other features in the PageLever Now tool include:

Priority Posting: Posts with the most recent activity are at the top of a page. If an administrator recently published a new post, but a comment on an older post followed it, the older post would then be at the top of the page.
An Updated Dashboard: The dashboard feature has a sidebar that lists information for each page and who is the administrator on it. It also has a built-in page post publisher calendar that lists when posts are scheduled and an image search.
Tagging Posts: Users can tag their posts by categories or campaign names and view analytics from those subgroups.

PageLever Now is available starting at US$ 99 per month.

Insights vs. PageLever

Real-time insights aren't new; companies want information on customer interactions so that they can promote products in a way that relates to the current interaction at the time. If they only have to wait a few moments for this information, they can update their posts and other data more quickly.
Google introduced their real-time data analytics last Fall, but Facebook has been slower when it comes to updating their system.
Facebook Insights has become a important part of the social media site, as it gives companies a chance to monitor fan interaction and tailor their products and promotions to this feedback. Initially, Facebook Insights was only providing users with feedback from the previous 48 hours; information included how many likes or unlikes went along with a post or how many times the page has been viewed.
Earlier this year, Facebook updated Insights by changing it to a real-time analytic tool. Data could be updated every 5 to 10 minutes, cutting the wait time for new data down from original 48 hours and users could avoid past issues, like spam, by being able to monitor content more quickly.
PageLever initially launched in August 2011 and provided users with a similar set of analytics tools and was seen as an alternative option to Insights. As with Insights, it offered users the ability to analyze API’s and analyze individual types of posts, such as video posts, to see what content was liked, shared and commented on the most. Some of PageLever's initial customers included Microsoft and YouTube, which means not only is PageLever Now a tool for Facebook, but also Insight's competition.

Blogger has officially announced sharing buttons. These buttons let your readers share posts on social networks like Twitter, Facebook & Google Plus. These sites bring traffic and are important for search engine rankings. First, Enable the Share Buttons!

Enabling share buttons under Blogger posts is very easy. Just go to Layout. Edit the Blog Posts gadget and enable Show Share Buttons option. Click the following image to see full size:

What to Do If Share Buttons Do Not Appear?

If you're using an old template then there is a chance that share buttons won't show up even if you've enabled them. So follow these steps:

Open the Template section.

Click the Edit HTML button.

A new window will open. Click the Proceed button to start editing.

Check Expand Widget Templates option. The page will automatically refresh.

That's it. Click Preview button and you will see share buttons right under the post body. After that, save your template.

By default, share buttons will appear on all pages. It might look a little messy and some people might want share buttons to appear only on post pages. To do that, you need to add a simple if-else condition. Instead of the above code, add this code after <data:post.body/>:

uTorrent is by far the most widely used BitTorrent client, and for very good reason. uTorrent is very small, very fast, and portable. It is packed with every feature you’d need to be a total download manager and this long list of features is complemented by a very configurable list of options and preferences.
In this post, I want to help everyone make sure that they’ve got their uTorrent client tweaked to their liking and to optimal performance. There’s a lot going on under the hood and uTorrent is in that elite class of software that many of us use every other day. Such software should be tweaked and played with until you’ve got it running just the way you like it.
If you don’t have uTorrent yet, get it. I’ve used plenty of other torrent handlers and no others compare. It’s simply the best out there.
So start up your client and go into the Preferences window, underneath the Options menu.

General

Most of you are probably familiar with tweaking this tab.
One suggestion I will make is that you uncheck the Check association on startup option. If you don’t use other download managers, it shouldn’t be necessary. It can also slightly speed up client start time.
Under the When Downloading table, I also recommend that you check Prevent standby if there are active torrents, especially if you like to download overnight. Doing so will keep your computer from going on standby, thus powering down your wireless card or other network interface and disconnecting you from the Internet.

Directories

If you, like me, store your downloads on an external drive then this is a pretty important section of the preferences.
Although you can see I’m not doing it in this screenshot, many would recommend that you store new downloads on your local drive and then move completed downloads to your external drive. Doing so will be less stressful on the external drive, as USB devices don’t have the same read and write capabilities as your internal drive.
The Automatically load torrents from setting is a good way to allow your uTorrent installation to be truly “portable” with an external drive, as you can seed and download from anywhere as long as you store your torrent files on that drive.

Bandwidth

This is a very important tab. Disregard my pathetic speed limits here, if you will.
My strongest suggestion is that you get a feel for your maximum upload and download rates through Speedtest and set your limitations accordingly. We all know how crazy ISPs are about torrent traffic, so I’d really always recommend throttling your upload and download speeds to something responsible.
The Maximum upload rate and Maximum download rate are global settings, not per torrent. They are in kB/sec. Many of you are on connections where you’re more familiar with megabytes, and there are 1024 kB in 1 MB.
The Number of Connections table also has very important numbers. Higher numbers here could actually cause your uTorrent client to require more CPU usage. Set them as you see fit.

Transfer Cap

I just mentioned those crazy, torrent-hating ISPs. If your ISP forces a monthly cap on your download and upload, you absolutely need to use this. It’s very self-explanatory and allows you to set limits at each level.

Scheduler

The scheduler is a very cool and thoughtful feature that a lot of you should be able to appreciate.
If you live with others and share a connection, don’t be that guy using up all of the bandwidth. Set up your scheduler to limit upload and download speeds during peak or home hours. Let your downloads go unthrottled overnight or when everyone is at work. Clicking on squares in the grid will allow you to change their color, and function, respective to the hour in the chart.
In the screenshot, I am throttling my speeds from 7 PM to midnight.
While I’ve covered a lot here, there are plenty more preferences that you need to look over yourself. The UI Settings tab is a good example. Set up your uTorrent so that it’s an enjoyable, smooth downloading experience, not a chore. Take five minutes out of your day to do this and it could improve your Internet and system performance in the future.

If someone gave me the choice of picking just one media player to take to a deserted island, I would most definitely plonk for VideoLan’s VLC Media Player. I really don’t know whether I would get too much of a chance to watch anything while I am marooned there, but when it comes to versatility, no other player comes close. Thank God! VLC Media Player is free. It is Open Source and cross-platform too.

Use VLC as an Online Video Downloader for YouTube

Using a combination of VLC and your browser, you can download videos from YouTube and a few other video sites. Copy the URL of the video you want to download. For instance, in YouTube it could be like this:
1. Click on Media – Open Network stream. Paste the URL and click the Play button in the player.

2. VLC Media Player starts streaming the video. Now, click Tools – Codec Information and at the bottom of the window you will see a Location box. Copy the long URL in the box and paste it on your browser’s address bar. The browser will now start playing the video file. You can download the video file to your desktop by doing a Save As…. Or you can choose to record the video.

Don’t Forget…VLC Can Play Audio Too!

We normally associate VLC with video, but VLC is a complete media player and that includes full music-playing features with playlist support. VLC not only displays cover art, but also has a pretty good graphic equalizer tucked away inside it.
You can bring it up with a CTRL+E. Pitch your song just right with the available presets, or finetune it with the 11 frequency bands.

The latest VLC also gives you Dynamic Range Compression that subdues loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by compressing an audio signal’s dynamic range. That’s just the thing if you are living in an apartment with thin walls.

Then there’s Audio Normalization

Just in case you don’t jump out of your skin, VLC has the normalization feature tucked deep inside Audio preferences (Tools – Preferences – Audio). It’s a feature to keep in mind when you are playing audio and video files; a sudden increase in the volume could jar your ears. In case of video, you have to restart the video for it to take effect.

Record Directly From Webcam

You can record your video chat session easily using VLC.
1. Go to Media – Open Capture Device.
2. On the Capture Device screen, you can select the video device and also the audio device like the system microphone.

3. You can also configure the options from the Configure settings. Finetune your capture with Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation (and other) controls.
4. Head down and drop down the Play button to open the Convert dialog where you can select the Destination file, click on the Browse button to select video file location, name and format.

Scrobble Tracks to Last.fm

Last.fm added support to VLC and that helps because you can enhance your recommendations by scrobbling from your desktop music collection to Last.fm using the VideoLan media player. Scrobbling tracks to Last.fm with what you listen to on your desktop is a simple three-step process –
1. From Tools – Preferences click the Show Settings radio button to All.
2. Drop down to Interfaces. Expand the branch to Control Interfaces – check Submission of played song to Last.fm.

3. Expand Control Interfaces and click on Audioscrobbler. Enter your login details on this screen, hit save and restart VLC.

Mouse Gesture Interactions with VLC

Productivity mavens like their mouse gestures, and VLC media player obliges with basic mouse gesture support. To activate this feature, go to View – Add Interface – Mouse Gestures. Automatically Quit VLC When Playback Is Over (And Shut down The Computer)

Queue your songs in a playlist (Kenny G’s saxophone perhaps), switch off the lights, and drift off to sleep. Oh wait! Did you forget to switch off the VLC player and shut down the computer? Stay in bed because a little line of code can do it for you.
You can quit VLC media player after playback is finished, by adding
vlc://quit
to the playlist. Alternatively, from Media select Quit at the end of playlist.
Shutting down the computer is a bit more elaborate with a batch file.
Create a new file with extension .BAT [use notepad] and paste in the contents from below:
START /WAIT C:\"Program Files"\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe %1 vlc://quit
shutdown -s -t 60
Drag your saved playlist icon on top of the .bat file. The batch file will launch VLC and load the playlist. It will wait for the playlist to finish playing and then the batch file shut down the PC in 60 sec.’s.

Sure, a few of these are duplicate accounts or businesses using personal accounts instead of pages, but that still leaves a huge amount of outright fake accounts. And these accounts are out there trying to weasel in as your friend, probably so they can spam you or perform some elaborate phishing scams down the track. They’re no good and you don’t want to accidentally friend one of them.
Thankfully, like the bulk of spamming and phishing efforts today, they’re mostly still fairly easy to spot. Plus, many of these profiles seem to have a few interesting features in common. From avoiding the the bulk spammer to spotting the cunning impersonator, there are things you can do to stay safe. Here’s what you should know.

Interesting Stats About Fake Facebook Accounts

Recently, Barracuda Networks pieced together some statistics about Fake Facebook profiles, the results of which are quite interesting and might help you to spot a fake profile. Here’s what the average fake profile looks like:

They have 6 times the average number of friends (726 versus 130)
Around 60% of fake accounts say they are bisexual, which is more than 10 times the amount of real Facebook accounts that list that information.
Almost all fake accounts (97%) claim to be female, as opposed to 40 percent of real accounts.
Fake accounts will often tag photos far more often than real accounts, with an average of 136 tags per four photos on fake accounts compared to one tag per four photos for real Facebook users.
43% of fake profiles have never updated their status, compared with 15% of real people.

So, if you get a friend request from a hot, bi girl with tonnes of friends, no status updates and lots of tagged photos, maybe you should entertain the possibility that it’s a fake account. Just maybe.

What About Dedicated Fake Profiles?

Sadly, there are also fake profiles out there which are hand-crafted to deceive a small number of people only. These are trickier to spot, especially as they gain credibility with each person they deceive. There are still a few ways to protect yourself against these fake profiles, so we’ll go through them now.

Protect Yourself From Fake Profiles

It’s possible to block friend requests from people who have no friends of friends in common with you. To lock down your settings, head to your Privacy Settings via the down arrow in the top-right of Facebook and choose “How You Connect”, then choose who can send you friend requests.

If everyone did this, it would serve as a sort of filter against that first deception from a fake profile. Potential friends would have to send you a message and do a far better job of tricking you into believing it was them. However, this can lead you into a false sense of security if the person has already deceived a few of your friends. You still need to be careful!
Try to teach your friends and family to stop blindly accepting friend requests. Millions of people will automatically approve any friend request they get, which opens them and all of their friends up to malicious links and deception.
If you’re not sure if you know someone, send them as message asking them to remind you. If they can’t or won’t respond, then they probably aren’t your friend.

If you think the account is someone impersonating a friend, try contacting that friend through some previously verified method such as an email address or phone number you already have for them. Also talk to mutual friends about whether the account could really be your friend or not, for instance to see if they’ve legitimately changed email addresses.

As you may have noticed, Facebook has been promoting its new “close friends” list in the past couple of months. You might have seen it when logging into Facebook: the top part of your news feed, which is often used by Facebook to promote new features, suddenly offers a way to add your best friends to a special list, where you will be able to follow them separately. So far so good. Several people I know saw this suggestion, and used it to add friends to the list right then and there. After all, many people have lots of Facebook friends, and it could be nice to distinguish your real friends from the mere acquaintances or colleagues.
However, Facebook being Facebook, there’s almost always a catch. In this case, there are two: One, once you add friends to your close friends list, you start getting extra notifications about them. A friend of mine told me she’s suddenly getting all sorts of random Facebook notification on her smartphone, and at first she didn’t even realize it was related to close friends. Two, Facebook makes it very easy to add friends to the list from the top of the news feed, but it’s not as easy removing them. After you’ve figured it out it’s not complicated at all, but finding it among all of Facebook’s different features can take some time.
Below I will show you in a few quick steps how to disable notifications for close friends, control what updates you get from them or remove friends from the list entirely.

Disabling Notification & Choosing What Updates You See
Sometimes, the hardest part in the whole process is finding the Close Friends page. If you’re lucky, you’ll find it right there in your sidebar on your Facebook home. Look for “Friends”, and find “Close Friends” under it.

If you can’t find it there, and it’s not always there for some reason, try clicking “More”. This should give you access to all your friends lists. Don’t be tempted to click the pen button which usually means edit; it doesn’t.

Just for general knowledge, this is where you can create new friends list, if you wish.
Now that you’re on your close friends list, you can start by disabling those pesky extra notifications. Click on “Notifications” on the top right, and choose “Off” to disable completely, or choose to get them just on Facebook or both Facebook and Email. If all you see is On and Off, it means you have summary emails enabled – a great thing to have.

Now you’re rid of notifications and you can enjoy your close friends’ updates without the extra annoyance. But Facebook offers an even more fine-grained way to control what you see from close friends, which could be useful: Click on “Manage List”, and choose “Choose Update Types…”.

Now you can decide which updates you want to get from close friends. For example, you can choose to see only new photos, status updates, comments and likes, and ignore annoying game requests.

All these settings can be configured the same way for other friend lists you’re using, such as acquaintances, or any other custom list.

Removing Friends From Close Friends List

You may have added friends to this list just to see what happens, you may have done it on a whim and now wish to change it, you may have considered someone as a close friend and then changed your mind – many things can happen that would make you want to remove friends from this list. Here is how to do so.
On your close friends page, click on “Manage List” (top right) and this time choose “Edit List”. You can also click the “See All” link above the thumbnail list on the right.

In the dialogue that opens, you can see all the people on your close friends list, and remove any or all of them. Simply hover over a friend’s picture to find the tiny X. Click it to remove that friend from the list. If you want to remove everyone from the list, you’ll have to click all their Xs one by one.

That’s it! Close friends should never bother you again, now.

Hey ladies, have you checked your Facebook privacy settings lately? If not, you could be in for a real shocker. If you have not set up the privacy settings on your Facebook account, your Facebook page is public to anyone who performs a search engine search on your name or any other keywords found in your profile.

For example, if you list Old School as your favorite movie, your profile could show up in a search engine results page when someone searches for Old School. If they click on the link, all of your information is now available in the hands of someone you don't know, not just your Facebook friends.

But that's not the worst part.

Thanks to your Facebook settings and the implementation of geo-location applications, such as Girls Around Me, you're actually more at risk than you think.

Girls Around Me is a smartphone app that people can use to find others close to their location. When a user logs in to Girls Around Me, it searches for their location. Once it has determined where they are, it then shows (in map form) where girls are. It pulls this information from check ins that people do on Facebook or Foursquare, and it pulls information from their public

Facebook profiles.
Users can then see pictures of these girls, know exactly where they are and how long they've been there, and by clicking on their picture, they can see the girls’ Facebook profiles and even view their pictures. Depending on how detailed a Facebook profile is, this could easily set women up to be stalked or taken advantage of.

For example, if you have a very detailed Facebook profile, which includes your place of work, your name, your age, the names of your family members, where you went to school, etc., people using an app like Girls Around Me or who come across your public Facebook profile now know more about you than you'd like. If they go to the location you recently checked in at, they can use this information to make you think that you know them. You will then be more inclined to trust them, which could end up putting you in a dangerous situation.

What can I do to stop this?
Facebook allows you to change your profile from public to private. It also allows you to customize your settings so that you have complete control over who exactly sees your profile, your posts and your photos.

If you want to protect yourself, you need to also refrain from using geolocation applications. Don't check yourself in to places on Facebook or Foursquare, otherwise you run the risk of showing up on apps like Girls Around Me. Even if you have altered your Facebook privacy settings, checking in will still allow users to see your location, they just won't be able to publicly access your information.

Unfortunately we live in a world where anybody can access our information, and this information can fall into the hands of an undesirable individual. Luckily, if you refrain from using check in applications and change your Facebook privacy settings, you can keep yourself and your information safe.

Show your blog's RSS Feed in Facebook profile/ fans page

Yesterday, I was chatting with a friend of mine in Facebook. A question arose from him "Is there any way to connect RSS feed to our Facebook profile?". Yes, sure we can. By using a Facebook app called "Social RSS", it is possible to show your blog's feed in your Facebook Profile/ Fans page.

First, log into Facebook. Go to "Social RSS" application page. There, click on the "Go to application" button below the application picture. Click on Allow button, if a page asking for you permission to allow the application appears.

Under the "Feed Settings" tab, enter blog's title, feed URL as shown in image below. After done click on the "Update" button.

Feed URL: http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

Now click on the "Display Options" tab and set how your feed look like. For example, my settings look like this.

Items: 5
Description: No
Date : No
Share : No

But, you can adjust the settings as you wish. But, don't forget to click "Update" button. Now, go to "Application Settings" option under "Settings" menu. Scroll down until you see Social RSS application. Click on "Edit Settings" option near Social RSS application. An "Edit Social RSS Settings" pop-up window will appear. Select "Add" option for Box and Tab.

Now go to your Profile page. Click on "Boxes" tab. Click on the pencil icon on the Social RSS box and select "Move to Wall Tab" option.

And now it will open your Profile page with your blog's RSS Feed in sidebar.

And now you're done. Don't hesistate to ask your questions regarding this via comments.

Update 09/01/2010: To add this application in you fan's page, go to your page and click on the "Edit Page" option below the profile picture. When "Edit Page" opens, scroll down until you see "More applications" option and click "browse more".

It will open application page. Type "Social RSS" in search box and search.

Clicking on "Social RSS" will open application page. Select "Add to my page" option.

Now, select the page you want to add it. Enter the feed URL, title and edit display options. Go back to your page.There, click "Edit Page" again. Search for Social RSS in applications list and click on "Application Settings" below the Social RSS application. Click "Add" option next to Tab and Box. And now follow the previous steps stated above to show the box in your sidebar.

Difficulty is in its way. If you want to dig up a pit in the ground, expect that it won't be as easy as digging a hole in the shore.

What is the most possible reason why we grab a pen and a paper, and start penning down sentences? That is simply because we hold an abundance of ideas that makes us productive in our own ways. The richness of our ideas helps us realize the things that we see and imagine. In fact, the world has came this far because we hold much of it.

The richness of ideas is innate to all of us.

It's innate, so you have it. But how if you don't see it coming? Do you have problem delivering your opinion? The reason behind difficulty is the lack of practice. It's building up, resources would yield nothing if they are not put in a proper use, and so does your chance to use your intellect.

How to build up the richness of your ideas?

Sitting and talking about senseless thing is the most unproductive thing one can do to his life. He is like expecting a drought to come with nothing at hand. In order to have a bountiful harvest, you have to weed and water and so on. My point is that, put your mind at a pace that would not make your brain outdated. Enhance yourself in a way that you can freely express the things that make you distinctive as a person. We possess different qualities and that make us special, find it in you as I am seeking it in me.

How did I build up the richness of my ideas?

Do not depend on your own abilities, learn from others and make an observation. Ask yourselves about the things that they have done best making them productive.
Make an innovation, copy their style but make sure that you preserve your own. It is just like breeding, and yours will become a hybrid-- and you would come out much stronger.
Make use of what you have learned. Apply it, not just in your writing, apply it repeatedly. Read more and write more. Be an addict to learning. Do not forget to use resources and materials that would make learning enjoyable.

Do not leave unfamiliar word, grab a dictionary or thesaurus, find its meaning. I love playing a 'thesaurus game', I would pick up a new word, list it on a paper and note down all it's possible meaning and synonyms, etc.
