Ubuntu 11.04 libjpeg.so libpng.so PHP installation issues

PHP is a commonly used scripting language available on just about any OS. If you're looking to install PHP on Ubuntu (particularly the new 11.04 build) then you may come across some issues.

Nigel Dunn discusses his experience with PHP on Ubuntu. Nigel has some tricks to get everything up and running so it might save you save yourself alot of time. The issues are surrounding libjpeg & libpng and php Installation issues. The problem appears to be largely around symbolic links.

Adding the appropriate smbolic links appear to fix the problem, so if you're Ubuntu machine is complaining about libjpeg or lib png, try the following:

ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjpeg.so /usr/lib/libjpeg.so
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng.so /usr/lib/libpng.so

Smart Server backups with Amazon S3

Server backups are Important and with cloud computing and cloud storage, now more then ever we're spoilt for choice. I came across a great article about how to bulletproof sever backups with Amazon S3 that I just had to share.

Problem 1: One of the annoying things about server backups is the fact that they take up space. While hard drive space gets cheaper and cheaper it may be the case that the hard drive space on your server might be more costly then storage you could obtain elsewhere.

Problem 2: The other important aspect of backups relates to being able to actually using them when you need to. Backing up to the same server isn't always the best solution because if you're server is unavailable so are your backups.

The Solution: So can you really find cheap storage space, that's offsite and redundant? We'll that's the whole point of Amazon S3! The problem?...You still need to figure your backup process to work with S3, so lets take a look at how.

The Howto: To start with you'll need your Amazon S3 information (Access Key ID, Secret Key). If you don't have an account it's easy to setup an Amazon S3 account and you only pay for what you use. If you only ever setup and create a few test scripts you'll probably only end up paying a couple of dollars. Create a bucket in Amazon S3 to store your server backups, you can think of this bucket as a top-level directory.

There are many different tools and approaches to online storage, but making sure you have automated backups, offsite is one of the best things you can do (you'll thank yourself when your server is down and you need your data).

If you're been living under a web development rock you may not have noticed some new developments in the Internet, you know CSS3 and HTML5?

A company called Sencha do a lot of impressive work when it comes to the web. Check out Sencha - JS Framework and you'll be impressed.

They claim to be the First HTML5 mobile web APP framework and the allow you to save copious amounts of development time while producing code that works across multiple plantforms, ah the coders dream!

On the Sencha site you'll find demos, an overview, the regular testimonials, road map & licensing. They also have info about training & support as well as community components like forums so you can share advice with fellow web developers.

The sorts of apps you can produce (in the browser) are fantastic and it's all thanks to CSS3 & HTML5, and of course you have to give props to Sencha for developing the Framework to be able to execute effectively and efficiently.

Sencha provide both commercial & open source licences so they're pretty flexible. They also have a number of great products (they acquired ExtJS when started off as a spawn of the YUI Library).

Although there are plenty of Javascript Libraries around Sencha have the swiss army knife of products and clearly demand your attention when you're next revisiting which JS Framework you'll develop with.

Here are three quick things to consider when choosing your next domain name!

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Integrate keywords into the URL
- If you sell bikes, bikesales.com.au is a good choice

Take care when choosing the TLD
- TLD stands for Top Level Domain and refers to the last part of your URL (.com .com.au .net .org etc). If you're audience is global .com is a good choice, if you're specifically a local business choosing the appropriate TLD (e.g .com.au for Australian businesses) is an important step which you shouldn't ignore

Avoid using a URL that's too similar to competitors
- You don't want potential visitors to get confused (unless you're trying to steal traffic from someone else? but even then those sorts of tricks can backfire for many reasons).

Link Building - Quality over Quantity

Now don't get me wrong, I think on-page optimization is a key ingredient in any Search Engine Marketing activities you undertake but at the end of the day you will need links. I won't try and tackle which is more important (on-page or off-page factors), at least not right now. What I will attempt in this post is to give you some practical pointers if you're interested in doing any form of link building.

How to find links on your own

Getting the right tools
Firefox is a great browser with some really useful plugins (I do prefer Chrome for daily browsing but Firefox seems to have great plugins that still make it an appealing backup browser). If you're going to be scouring the web for good links you'll want to know which sites have the best PageRank and you can do this by installing the SEO Quake plugin. The really neat feature that you can take advantage of is sorting links (by PageRank) when you're doing searching in Google.

Searching
You can search Google for potential website that will link to you. The following are some examples to get you started.

Searching for pages with "submit site" in their title, as well as the keyword for your niche:
intitle:submit+site "cars"
Tip: Other ideas include using the words add+url or directory or add your site.

You can get creative and target all sorts of blogs, directories, edu sites (or anything else you can think up). The benefit of using this method along with SEO Quake is being able to sort the results by the highest PageRank which can help identify quality sites. Another trick is to change your settings in Google to display 100 results at a time, this is the key to help sort your links and get the most out of your link hunting expeditions.

Link Building Tips

There are a few common sense principles when link building that I'd like to share:
- Try not to go overboard, building 1,000 links overnight is sure to trip some warning bells over at Google
- Vary your anchor text, what's worse then 1,000 links overnight? 1,000 links with the exact same anchor text
- Don't be scared to get NoFollow links, a mix is good
- Avoid "Bad Neoughborhoods" or sites people might consider too "spammy"
- Make your comments useful, spending the extra time doing this will improve your approval rate and mean more links for you

Link Building All too hard?

Like most things in life there's many options to have the leg work done for you. A Search Engine Marketing Expert should be more then capable of obtaining these sorts of links, if you pay them of course.

So, what are you worth? Or specifically what's your site worth?

There are many ways to asses the value of your site and getting a good overview is important when evaluation your (or any) site. So how do you put a value on a website? You should really try and asses each site using as much data as you can.

While there are online, automated tools to help figure out what a site might be worth they can never compare to additional research, you know by humans. What's the businesses connected with the website worth? What sort of market/niche is the website in, how much do you know about that niche (If you're looking to buy).

To get the ball rolling you might want to get some basic stats. It's a good idea to find out what the Google PageRank is for a particular website, when was the domain established, how many back-links does the site have?

Online assesments all use different calculations to determine a sites worth, that's why it's important to use a handful of them to try to get a sense of the real worth a site might have. Usually factors such as inbound links, DMOZ, Alexa, PageRank, Compete, Quantcast, Domain Age.

One of my favorite bits of documentation is Mongo Security & Authentication. You'll find security details including the basic authentication scheme and it's features/limitations. At the time of writing Mongo supports only very basic security. Details of authentication, users, read and write permissions, ports and other security issues are clearly outlined which is a pleasant surprise.

You can try out mongoDB through their online shell, download it or get the latest drivers. The browser shell is actually really impressive, and complements their snappy, clean website.

SEO Rapper puts the PPC-MC in his place

Recently I posted about the SEO Rapper. I did some research, and even managed to get some feedback from Chuck himself. This lead to watching even more videos, and I even came across some interesting videos on youtube, like the PPC MC, Aaron Goldman. And this is where the story gets interesting...

So the PPC-MC (low on the rap talent, but he does know his Internet Marketing) is trying to get the SEO Rapper to do a live battle. As painful as it was to watch Aaron make a fool of himself trying to rap I didn't think much of it at the time, but it turns out Chuck may have taken the bait.

Personally I'm a little surprised that the PPC MC is taking this sort of risk, maybe it's a lot of fun, maybe it's just a publicity grab? Either way these video's are entertaining. It seems to me that Aaron is grasping at straws here. As Chuck points out the "SEO Rapper" is just a name, he does Internet Marketing, as as I've covered in my pervious post he'd already produced a video called Paid Search 101. A solid Online Marketing plan should take advantage of SEO & SEM both have their strengths & weaknesses.

If you ask me Arron has nothing on Chuck, the SEO Rapper has talent as a rapper and as a Search Engine & Internet Marketing Expert (and his video's are able to entertain and educate his audience too so his talents lend themselves to promotional videos and viral marketing activities).

So how will this this battle play out? Will we see a live battle? Only time will tell. For now I'll leave you with the lyrics of a true rapper/Internet Marketing Expert, the SEO Rapper's response to PPC MC.

Some know him as the Poetic Prophet, others as the SEO Rapper but if you're even slightly interested in Search Engine Optimisation you'll want to check out Chuck's videos.

The thing I love about these video's is how Chuck able to drop catchy phrases that have some real meaning behind them. SEO without SEM? That's a NO-NO.

So is this all just for fun? Watching these video's is surely entertaining but it does hold more value then you might think. Chuck offers insights into the sorts of things you should be doing when it comes to Online Marketing as well as the things to stay clear of. But Chuck isn't the only one who enjoys these SEO rap videos, I'm not talking about just you and me, I'm talking about Brian Horn.

Those who believe themselves to be technologically advanced and able to handle any computer issue that may arise may find a bit of challenge when discussing issues with JavaScript or even some libraries such as the jquery JavaScript library. For those who need a little help with these issues they can often find that help at the website of the company who puts out the technology, jQuery has great documentation which you'll find on their site. Most website have forums, chat & other community features to help you learn how to use their particular library, and jQuery is no exception.

If you are in need of help regarding jquery JavaScript library you should consider going online and doing a quick search. The search results may yield excellent information from others who have had similar issues and been able to address the problems successfully. If nothing else it will help to rule out some of the options that are not helpful. You also could potentially find someone with contact information that can offer you direct information surrounding other issues that are similar.
