You can use MTS or any other USB internet connection with more than one computer. All you need is a router.

Here is the process.

Lets suppose there are two laptops. Laptop A and Laptop B. Laptop A has MTS internet connected.

1. Setup a LAN with your router. Make sure the ip address of your router is not 192.168.0.1 . If so, change to some other like 192.168.0.11
2. Make sure you can ping Laptop A from B and B from A.
3. Now open Network and sharing center in Laptop A and right click on MTS USB Modem, click on Properties and go to Sharing tab.
4. Check “Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection”.
5. Select which network adapter you want to use to allow incoming connections. It can be a LAN or wireless adapter. The ip address of that adapter will be changed to 192.168.0.1 .
6. Go to Laptop B and take properties of the network connection. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.
7. Select “Use the following IP address”
8. Give the following settings.
Set IP address as 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
Default gateway should be 192.168.0.1 (This is Laptop A’s ip address)
Preferred DNS server should be 192.168.0.1

9. Thats it. You can use two computers simultaneously.

Only problem is you need a master computer which should be ON when using other computers. In tha above case Laptop A is the master computer.

Sharing one interesting problem and very interesting solution.

One fine day while video chatting using skype, my ethernet connection got disconnected all of a sudden.

I tried everything to get it work. Changed the cable, changed the router, rebooted, rebooted to linux etc etc…Didnt work.

Later i found an interesting solution. Here it is..

1. Remove LAN cable.
2. Switch off router. Unplug it.
3. Shutdown your laptop.
4. Disconnect the battery.
5. Take 30 minutes break.
6. Comeback and reconnect everything.
7. And it works.

I dont know what caused the problem. Has it anything to do with skype?

And I dont know how this worked and which step solved the problem. I got this solution from here.

I started using Nextgen Gallery [ngg] longtime back. Its a wonderful plugin and very easy to use.

Sometime back, ngg started showing seo friendly urls.

ie, Urls in this format – www.bikes4sale.in/wp/1272/yamaha-ybr-wallpapers/nggallery/image/yamaha-ybr-2/

But something screwed up in their code.

After some days i noticed more than 10,000 page not found errors in Google Webmasters.

There were pages with urls like
www.bikes4sale.in/wp/page/71/?nggpage=vujjjqwofeiqevsp
and
www.bikes4sale.in/wp/page/49/?album=qbiwjwwgeqcofh&pid=265&pageid=605

And the images in galleries in that page had urls like
www.bikes4sale.in/wp/1272/yamaha-ybr-wallpapers/nggallery/image/yamaha-ybr-2/page-vujjjqwofeiqevsp
and these urls were returning page not found error.

Solution for the problem
So i came up with this solution.

1. Tell google to ignore pages with url parameters nggpage and album.
Go to Google Webmasters -> Site configuration -> Url parameters

2. Open nggfunctions.php in nextgen plugin directory.

a. Go to the lines containing $nggpage = get_query_var(‘nggpage’);
Add the following line below those lines.
if(!empty( $nggpage ) && !is_numeric($nggpage)) $nggpage = null;
This will ignore junk nggpage url parameters.

b. Go to the lines containing $album = get_query_var(‘album’);
Add the following line below those lines.
if(!empty( $album) && !is_numeric($album)) $album= null;
This will ignore junk album url parameters.

3. To block search engines from crawling the huge duplicate pages created by Nextgen gallery, i added the following lines in my robots.txt

User-Agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /wp/*?nggpage=
Disallow: /wp/*&nggpage=
Disallow: /wp/*?album=
Disallow: /wp/*&album=
Disallow: /wp/*/page-a
Disallow: /wp/*/page-b
Disallow: /wp/*/page-c
Disallow: /wp/*/page-d
Disallow: /wp/*/page-e
Disallow: /wp/*/page-f
Disallow: /wp/*/page-g
Disallow: /wp/*/page-h
Disallow: /wp/*/page-i
Disallow: /wp/*/page-j
Disallow: /wp/*/page-k
Disallow: /wp/*/page-l
Disallow: /wp/*/page-m
Disallow: /wp/*/page-n
Disallow: /wp/*/page-o
Disallow: /wp/*/page-p
Disallow: /wp/*/page-q
Disallow: /wp/*/page-r
Disallow: /wp/*/page-s
Disallow: /wp/*/page-t
Disallow: /wp/*/page-u
Disallow: /wp/*/page-v
Disallow: /wp/*/page-w
Disallow: /wp/*/page-x
Disallow: /wp/*/page-y
Disallow: /wp/*/page-z
Disallow: /wp/*/wp-admin

Please Note My wordpress is installed under the folder “wp” and hence the robots.txt rule starts with /wp/

Inorder to use your Binatone Wireless Router with BSNL Dataone broadband connection, you need to downgrade the firmware.

My router is Binatone DT845W. I got this router with my Airtel broadband connection in Bangalore.

When i shifted to Kerala, i took a BSNL broadband connection.

Airtel broadband executive had upgraded the firmware to DT4W-A1.006

For using BSNL connection, i downgraded the firmware to DT4W-A1.002

Download the firmware for Binatone DT 845W

After the installation of the firmware, do the following.

Tab: Interface Setup -> Internet
Select Virtual Circuit as PVC2
VPI = 0 and VCI = 35
Disable all other Virtual Circuits.

ATM QoS = UBR
PCR = 0

ISP = PPPoA/PPPoE

Servicename = leave it blank
Username = username which you got from BSNL
Password = password which you got from BSNL

Connection = Always On
Get IP Address = Dynamic

NAT = Enable

Defaut Route = Yes

TCP MTU = 1454 or 1492

Dynamic Route = RIP2-B
Direction = Both
Multicast = Disabled
Mac Spoofing = Disabled

If you are going to buy a UPS only for your modem or wireless router, read this.

Most of the UPS require a minimum load to function properly. If we dont give a minimum load, the UPS will turn off after 5 to 6 minitues.

Usually the minimum load is around 50W. And modems and wireless routers consume only around 5 to 8W. So if you connect only a modem or router, you wont get huge backup time.

Recently i bought an iBall UPS for my wireless router. The router is of around 7W. And i am getting a backup time of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, it will switch off and internet is disconnected. So i need to restart it again to get 5 more minutes. And nothing was specified in iBall UPS’s manual.

So, before buying a UPS for your modem, ask the dealer specifically whether the UPS supports low watt devices. Some shop owners sell modified UPS which will work with low watt devices and gives more than two hours backup time.

Update: After fighting for half an hour with the shop keeper, I exchange the iBall UPS with APC BR600CI-IN UPS by paying 550 Rs extra. And APC UPS gives better backup time for my wireless DSL router.
