Apple has announced their new iPhone 5s with in this released a new alternative version of iPhone which is more attractive and cheaper, iPhone 5c. So what’s the different between these Phones, and is it worth your money? Let’s find about that in this week’s review.

On the first glance you would realize that this new iPhone isn’t made of what you always experienced in your old iPhone models. IPhone 5c isn’t made of the raw metal that apple use to create their previous models, it’s made with plastic.

Mostly on previous releases of iPhones Apple has strict metaphor of sticking in to large amount of sums which has left many people of buying second hand phones or from a mobile operator.

The price for the iPhone 5S is as follows: the 16GB iPhone 5S will cost £549 inc VAT in the UK. The 32GB flavour will set you back £629 inc VAT, and the 64GB model a whopping £709 inc VAT. The iPhone 5C comes in lower, as befits Apple's first plastic phone since the 3GS. It comes in just two capacities - 16GB and 32GB - that cost £469 inc VAT and £569 inc VAT respectively.

Here's where things get really interesting. The iPhone 5S is the first 64-bit smartphone. It comes with an all-new A7 chip with 64-bit architecture. It also has what Apple calls an M7 motion coprocessor, which should mean a lot more apps that use motion-tracking, such as fitness apps. The iPhone 5C by contrast comes with an A6 chip - it's basically the iPhone 5 with a new coat. Without doing any further testing we can't honestly comment on how this will affect performance. But if the iPhone 5C performs like the iPhone 5 it will be fast for a premium smartphone. Here's hoping the iPhone 5S is an upgrade. Apple doesn't tend to say how much RAM it puts into its smartphones.

Storage is another differentiator. The iPhone 5C comes in 16GB and 32GB flavours, but the iPhone 5S matches that and goes all the way up to 64GB.

Another key area of difference is the design. The iPhone 5C is a radical departure for Apple. It is primarily made of plastic - the last to come with a plastic shell was the 3GS. And it comes in a variety of colours, five of them in fact. The iPhoine 5S by contrast is more in keeping with the iPhone 5's tone. It comes in three metallic shades, including a gold effect.

The iPhone 5S's dimensions are 123.8x58.6x7.6mm, and it weighs just 112g. By contrast the iPhone 5C measures 124.4x59.2x8.97mm and weighs 132g.

The key difference in terms of features as according to Apple goes a bit like this: the iPhone 5S has a chip with 64-bit architecture, and iOS7 was built for that architecture. It also has a fingerprint identity sensor and what Apple calls a better, faster camera. But in many ways the two phones are similar.

Another hardware spec Apple never gives away, and for which we'll have to wait to tear down a handset, is battery life. But unusually for a tech company Apple's claimed battery life figures tend to be close to the mark (steps back, waits for 'fanboy' accusations...). Both phones have built-in, non-swappable lithium-ion batteries. And Apple says both batteries will last for the same time. Apple says the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will last for up to 250 hours on standby, and 10 hours of talk time. Web surfing is 8 hours on 3G, and 10 hours on LTE and Wi-Fi. Apple claims 10 hours for video playback and 40 hours audio playback, for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

As I said before, before testing I expect these to bear out. Apple has a habit of underpromising on one device in order to make the lesser device look better. It did this previously with the iPhone 4S battery life, so that when the more powerful (but more power hungry) iPhone 5 came along it didn't look like a step back in terms of portability. So it is possible one will be better than the other, in this regard.

iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5C: cameras

Both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C have two cameras, a front-facing FaceTime camera and a rear-facing camera known as an iSight camera. The specifications work out as follows.

The iPhone 5C iSight camera has and 8 megapixel sensor with ƒ/2.4 aperture and LED flash. It supports 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps with video stabilisation. There's a 3x zoom. The iPhone 5C's FaceTime Camera takes 1.2Mp photos at a resolution of 1280x960, and offers 720p HD video recording.

The iPhone 5S iSight camera has what Apple describes as a better 8Mp sensor, listing it as 8 megapixels with 1.5µ pixels. It has ƒ/2.2 aperture and a true-tone flash. The video capabilities are the same, as listed, as is the FaceTime camera.

We'll have to give both iSight cameras a good workout before we make a proper judgment as to whether the iPhone 5S' is 'better'.

iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5C: display

The screen is another area in which the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S are eerily similar. Both have 4-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch displays, with a 1136x640-pixel resolution that makes for a pixel density of 326ppi. Expect 800:1 contrast ratio and 500 cd/m2 max brightness from both the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.

Sony Computers recently introduced their later PlayStation Gaming console PlayStation 4 (Watch the Event). As the Microsoft has released Xbox one console few weeks before (Watch the Event) Ps4, the war has started between rival companies. Both consoles will be released by the end of 2013 and you can pre-oder either right now, But what you should buy will be a quite dilemma.

Its a bit of a pickle in a middle to choose between two really good consoles but I've got to say , having watched both press events I'd personally choose Ps4. Sony has my heart since their opening of the press conference.

After reading many posts and reviews regarding these next gen gadgets it seems that many people are going with Ps4 because Xbox one has failed to provide some basic needs that a buyer would require

Lets take a look at what those needs could be.

Always online

Xbox one requires a player to maintain a constant internet connection for the purpose of preventing Pirated game copies and what so ever, if you fail to report Microsoft within 24 hours your game will cease to function bit of a military school isn't it ? you will still have the ability to watch Tv and Blue-ray but not the your game, this has made a lot of gamers furious and costed many valuable sales for Xbox one. Also there is a rumor saying that Xbox's Kinect camera stays always on to activate its person recognition system, which can also be a huge privacy breach but Microsoft's spokesman has told that the Kinect system can be adjustable to our privacy requirements and it can be turned off if we don't need it. On the other hand Sony has not made their new PlayStation with these kind of limitations. You wont be needing an internet connection unless you want to download a game, stream or Play in multiplayer gaming mode. So point one to PlayStation 4.

No problem with renting titles

Another huge favor to PlayStation users comes with used games. When Microsoft drawing boundaries to their users by letting the game developers set their own rules regarding their game being re-sold, Sony doesn't do such a thing. You can simply lend a game from your friend or a store and you can play it without any limitation. Xbox one has a feature to lend a game or share a game with a person who is friends with you in your live list more than 30 days but its only a one time deal.

Weight on wallet

Well this is the best weapon they both have to climb up in the sales chart and with the expected prize the both companies released PlayStation 4 has the advantage in this battle field.

The PS4 will cost $399 in the US, £349 in the UK, €399 in Europe and $549 in Australia.

The Xbox One, meanwhile, will cost more - $499 in the US, £429 in the UK and $599 in Australia.

Both consoles will go to market in the end of this year and despite the ups and downs they both have an next gen system and a stunning black design also both consoles has almost the same hardware acceleration, so why paying 100$ more ? That's a craving problem when it comes to buying either of these consoles.

System Architecture

As much as the two warring systems are different, the heart of the Xbox One and the PS4 remain very similar.That's because they're both running x86 octa-core CPUs, and these eight-core processors are built by the same chipmaker, AMD.The use of AMD in the Xbox One and PS4 is certainly a switch for both companies.Previously, Microsoft had used an IBM PowerPC processor, while Sony partnered with Toshiba and IBM on its own complicated Cell processor.
While the Xbox One will run a heavily modified eight-core AMD processor, PS4 will utilize a x86-64 "Jaguar" CPU.

Graphics Core

Both console makers are also relying on AMD to design their next graphics processors that will produce the next-generation visuals that differentiate console games from the emerging smartphone market.The Xbox One marries its GPU to the CPU in a system-on-a-chip design, according to Wired, with Direct 11.1 support.The single 40-nanometer SoC really contrasts with the two dedicated 90-nm chips found in the Xbox 360.However, it only marginally contrasts with the PS4, which also combines its AMD CPU with the chip maker's GPU.In the case of PS4, the graphics processor is described as semi-custom AMD Radeon that runs at 1.8 TFLOPS.

Better Controller

The Xbox One controller vs the PS4 DualShock 4 controller is a debate that won't be won anytime soon, mostly because gamers' already have a locked-in preference.

The reason for this is that neither Sony nor Microsoft have radically changed their respective controllers over the years - they're more like evolutions 2000 and 2001.

The DualShock 4 is a little bigger in the next-generation thanks to its unique front-and-center touchpad. Sony stuck with the dual analog sticks down in front, but at least have a central divot recess for easier gripping.

Microsoft also didn't mess with success, only slightly modifying its controller in the jump to the Xbox One. It's 40 design innovations are subtle, including the tweaked D-Pad on the bottom-left of the game pad.

Xbox One Kinect vs PS4 Eye

While Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will appeal to "core" gamers with mature launch titles, Microsoft and Sony are charging forward with motion-sensing devices.

The Xbox One Kinect was unveiled along with the system during the May 21 announcement, when Microsoft refered to to the advanced camera as "human control for a human experience."

Expanding on that motto, the packed-in 1080p Kinect 2.0 will be able to process 2GB of data per second, analyzing more joints, the slight rotation of a wrist or shoulder and your heartbeat.

Less is known about the PlayStation 4 Eye, but Sony did state that its similarly shaped camera bar contains two two 1280×800px cameras.

The PS4 DualShock 4 controller will come into play with the PS4 Eye thanks to its multi-colored light bar. It will also be compatible with those PS4 Move motion controllers that have gone unused.

Conclusion

If we head back to our question PlayStation 4 Vs Xbox one which one to buy ? if you have a real craving to have an Xbox and if you're obsessed with the cloud technology you should buy an Xbox one. For the rest of gamers my personal opinion is to buy a PlayStation 4. Xbox one also has good innovative technologies but those aren't fitting for my shoe. Microsoft reveled their brand new console this afternoon in a tent of its Redmond, WA. campus. Gaming communities were waiting to see what will Microsoft offer to overcome the Sony's PlayStation 4. Many Rumors were told, and now its time to see whether any of those have become true.

As for the design one word, Remarkable.its all black and features a two-tone finish with both matte and gloss in equal measure a slot-loading Blu-ray optical drive sits out front on the left face, while a power button with the traditional incomplete circle symbol is emblazoned on the right side. It can be switched between games and live TV instantaneously. "Switching between live tv and all your games and entertainment is now as simple as using a remote," Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi said. He also demonstrated gesture controls for the console's UI, quickly snapping back to the dashboard with a pinch command.

UI comes with an updated version of old Xbox360 Dashboard but it has a new tile system appearance as we can see in windows 8. In addition it has a new trending window to the standards you're used to: games, music, movies, etc. The trending concept stretches across the console's media functions as well as games, with integration in the TV program guide.

As much as the hardware of your robot, Software design is also a very important part. You learned how to make a robot from the last part of this tutorial, from this one you'll be learning how to write your first Robotic software.
Software is the soul of your robot it enables your robot to think and perform different tasks you assign. Present robotics codes are developed in C, C++, Java, Octave and some other programming platforms. For this project we'll be using C language, C being a low level language its certainly close to Machine language, That make the C language a very suitable language to program robots.

You can use different kinds of development studios to program your robot but I'd prefer if you use ROBOTC its a very powerful studio tuned to tweak the performances of your robot. It has a build in Simulator world where you can test your robot in different situations and virtual worlds, and you can upload your program directly right off the editor to your robot. Its a paid software but you will have all the features in 30-day Trial.

Installing ROBOTC

System Requirments to run ROBOTC on your computer

Downloading ROBOTC

Before we start programming in ROBOTC, we need to first download and install the client. This can be done by [Clicking here] additionally you can look up ROBOTC's website (https://www.robotc.net) and selecting the 'Downloads' tab.

Installing ROBOTC

1) Once the program is done downloading, navigate to the Downloads folder on your computer and start the ROBOTC installer. You may have to right click on the installer and select the "Run as Administrator" depending on individual computer restrictions; ROBOTC must be installed with administrator privileges.

2) Before you can proceed, you must read over and accept the End User License Agreement. If you agree to the End User Agreement, check the "I accept" and then the "Next" button to continue the installation.

3) Next, select where you would like ROBOTC to install to. The default location is C:/Program Files (x86)/Robomatter Inc/ROBOTC Development Environment.

4) The installer will ask you to confirm your settings. If everything looks correct, click "Install" to being the installation process. The installer will then begin copying files from the installer to your computer. Please wait until this is complete.

5) The installer will inform you of when the installation is complete. Click the "Finish" button to complete your install.

6) Right-Click on the ROBOTC icon and select "Run as Administrator" to run ROBOTC as an administrator (assuming the user account has administrator privileges). You will only need to do this one time.

Building Licenses

There is a special type of ROBOTC license called a Building License . These licenses do not require an online activation but rather have a unique building license file that must be installed with the software in order for ROBOTC to work properly. When you order a building license you will be sent an email with a unique building license file.

To activate ROBOTC with a building license, download and run the installer as normal. Once the program is installed, copy the building license file into the ROBOTC directory (typically C:/Program Files (x86)/Robomatter Inc/ROBOTC Developement Environment).

One of the advantages of building licenses is that they help make automated installs easy. To roll out ROBOTC to multiple computers using a building license, make sure the base image has ROBOTC installed and the building license files in the correct directory. As long as those two conditions are met, ROBOTC should be active on each computer the image is rolled out to with no futher action required.

There is, however, an exception. If ROBOTC is being run from a centralized network, each computer that needs to access ROBOTC must also install a Network Dependencies package (available from the ROBOTC downloads page). The building license file must also be properly installed on the network in order for networked computers to access ROBOTC.

Activating ROBOTC

To continue using ROBOTC past the 30 day trial period, you must purchase a ROBOTC license and then activate the license on each computer.

To activate ROBOTC, you will need the License ID and Password that was sent to you during the purchase process.

If you purchased a ROBOTC license online, the License ID and Password were sent to the email address specified.
If you ordered the CD-ROM version of ROBOTC, the License ID and Password are printed on the CD label.

If you are Activating the ROBOTC license on computers with internet access, follow the Activation instructions below.

NOTE: ROBOTC must be activated on each individual computer. ROBOTC can no longer be activated offline; the computers must be activated with a working internet connection. Once activation is complete, the computers do not need to remain online to stay activated.

Follow these steps to activate on a computer with internet access:

1) Open ROBOTC and navigate to the Help menu. From there, select 'Manage Licenses -> Add License'. If you do not already have a ROBOTC license, you may purchase one by clicking the 'Purchase License' option.

Driver Installation

You will need :

A ROBOTC for IFI Installation CD or Internet connection
A VEX USB-to-Serial cable

Plug in the A VEX USB-to-Serial cable USB end to the ComputerCancel any automatic installation prompts that may appear, such as the “Found New Hardware Wizard” Window. Instead, run the driver installation program manually from the ROBOTC for IFI CD-ROM or download and run the driver from the ROBOTC.net website. For downloading instructions, see step 3.

If you dont have the CD you may have to download the driver from ROBOTC Prolofic USB-to-Serial Driver, the installation file will need to be extracted before you can start the installation process. Extract the “prolific_usb_driver” file by right-clicking its icon, selecting “Extract All...”, and proceeding through the following steps. Once complete, run the “SETUP” file and follow the its instructions to finish installing the USB-to-Serial driver.

Re-plug the Cable

Firmware installation

Plug the Robot Interface (“telephone”) Cable and the USB-to-Serial cable into the Programming Module.

Plug the free USB connector end of the Programming cable into a USB port on your computer.

Plug the other unconnected end of the cable into the “SERIAL” port of your VEX Micro Controller.

If the VEX Micro Controller is not already turned on, turn it on now.

Run RobotC

First Screen

Your main window should look like this

Now that ROBOTC is open, go to the View menu and select Preferences. A new window with a Platform tab appears. Select the platform type and COM port for your robot.

From the Robot menu, select Download Firmware.

The Select VEX firmware file window appears. The VEX firmware file starts with “VEX” and has a number. If more than one file starts with “VEX”, choose the one with the highest number. Choose Open to start downloading the VEX firmware.

Restart your VEX Micro Controller to complete the download firmware process.

Your robot is now ready to be used with ROBOTC

Programming

After you successfully connect the your robot, start writing your first robocode. RobotC programming interface and methods are easy to understand even for a very beginner. Thats another reason to use RobotC in this project.

Before you begin programming your Arduino in ROBOTC, you'll need to let ROBOTC know which Arduino board you are using. To do this, go to the Robot menu and select Platform Type → Arduino → Standard Arduino and choose your board from one of the choices.

Select your Serial Port

Once your Arduino's Type is selected, you'll need to select which serial port the Arduino is connected to on your computer. Go to the View menu and choose Select Communication Port. From here, you'll pick your Arduino board from the dropdown menu.

Once your program is completed, you can download it to your Arduino controller by going to the Robot menu and selecting Compile and Download or by simply pressing F5.

The ROBOTC debug windows appear when the download is complete. Sometimes only the Program Debug window will appear. This is not a problem, simply a setting in ROBOTC.

Also ROBOTC has a number of sample programs for you to learn how to program and use your Arduino board. You can open a sample program by going to the File menu and selecting Open Sample Program. Once you're in the open sample programs directory, make sure you choose your Correct Sample Program Folder for your Arduino.

Voila!! you wrote your first robocode. Make sure you try different codes as your imagination to improve your coding.

Let's Make a Robot using VEX

Welcome, this tutorial will show you how to make your own robot. For this project we will be using a VEX system, a very popular robotic platform among robotic competitions. For coding we will be using C language, its not necessary to have some basic knowledge in C to complete this project but if you have any experience in C language, its better. Don't worry in this tutorial our robot wont be needing any hardcore coding to do. Its from the basic so anyone can easily follow the tutorial.

In this tutorial we'll be making a simple line following robot using a VEX brain. Best thing about VEX is its reprogramming you can re program your robot anytime with the correct code you can easily transfer your robot from a simple line following robot to an advance obstacle avoiding robot.

Initial Design of the Robot

In this tutorial we will be making a Squarebot. You will need following materials to build your robot.

You can either part by part of you can directly buy the VEX Starter KIT. This is pretty expensive so if you consider buying in separate parts on eBay, it might save you few bucks. But keep in mind that Building VEX is expensive, its a professional system and it can perform impressive advance tasks, if you are a Robotics enthusiast you will find it pretty intimidating. Just take a look at this video showing capabilities of VEX Robotics.

Building Instructions

Lets start building your robot, first identify your materials and make sure you wont mount the wrong piece in wrong place. Please follow the guide bellow to identify materials.

Step 1. Making Inner chassis rails

You will require two chassis rails one facing towards the other. Both should be kept in left and right positions with open side facing each other. Please orient them like below.

Add four bearing flats to the chassis rails.Make sure that you position the bearing flats such that the central hole of each bearing flat is aligned with the fourth hole from the respective end of the chassis rail, as shown.

Mount the bearing flats to the chassis using two ½" 8-32 screws and two keps nuts. As shows.

Your completed inner chassis should look like this

Step 2. Making Outer Chassis rails

Just like the previous step you will require two chassis rails and position them according to the previous step

Add bearing flats to the inner faces of the two chassis rails. The center hole of the bearing

flat should be aligned with the eighth hole from the front end of the chassis rail, in the

middle row of holes.

Secure each bearing flat with two ½" 8-32 screws and two keps nuts.

Your outer rails should look like this

Step 3.Motor Assembly

Before starting on your motor make sure that you have installed the clutch

Insert two square beams to each clutch, to make sure they attach firmly. Square bar will act as motor's rotor.

Take the inner chassis rails which you have assembled before and put your motor square beams through the middle hole in the middle row of each chassis rail.

Install one bearing flat on the outward-facing side of each chassis rail, with the front hole of the bearing flat sliding onto the motor shaft as shown.

Your assemble so far should look like this.

Secure the bearing flat to the inner chassis rail and motor using two ½" 6-32 screws per motor. Note that these are the thinner screws, not the usual 8-32 ones

We're done with motor assembly and your project should look like this.

Step 4. Chassis Sub-assembly.

Insert a 3" square bar through the center hole of each unoccupied bearing flat, as shown.Do not push them all the way through. Push the end of the bar about ¼" through the rail.

Slide metal collars (with threaded screws) onto each of the 2" and 3" square bars,mounting them flush with the surface of the bearing flat against which they will sit.Be sure the square bars don’t get pushed further in while you put the collars on.

Once the collars and bars are in position, tighten the threaded screws with the thinner allen wrench to keep the collars from sliding out of place.

Slide a 60-tooth gear onto the drive axle of each motor, pushing it flush against the collar that you added in the previous step.

Slide a 36-tooth gear onto each of the remaining square bars, pushing them against the collars.

Add another collar to the end of the 2” shafts (the ones directly connected to the motor).Slide them down so that they are flush with the larger gear. Make sure they are tightened.

Tighten the threaded screws with the thinner allen wrench.

Your kit includes two differently sized black spacers. Slide one of each onto the shafts with the smaller gears (those not directly connected to the motors), as shown.

Install the pre-assembled outer chassis rails onto the current assembly. All three of the square bars sticking out of the inner rail should go through bearing flats on the outer rail.

Place chassis bumpers on the front and rear of the chassis rails, as shown.

Secure the vertical faces of the chassis bumpers to the end of the chassis rails using four ¼" 8-32 screws and keps nuts in the front, and four in the back.

Connect four 2” standoffs using four ¼” 8-32 screws. Place them as shown and be sure to note that two of them are on the edge and two are one space away from the edge.Connect the parts using the thicker allen wrench while holding the standoff in place.

Secure the horizontal faces of the chassis bumpers to the top of the chassis rails using four ¼" 8-32 screws and four keps nuts, two in the front and two in the back.

Install the small green tires (2.75" Removable Tire and 1.895" Hub) on the 3" square
beams, as shown. Slide them down so they are flush with the bearing flats.

Slide the collars onto the shafts such that they are flush against the wheels.Tighten the collars in place with the thinner allen wrench.

Position the micro controller on your robot as shown.

Attach the micro controller to the chassis using four ½” 8-32 screws and keps nuts,as shown. Insert the screws into the small holes in the micro controller to hold it in position properly.

Step 5. Canopy Assembly

You will need a punched panel to begin constructing the canopy.You are constructing a separate part in this segment, which will later be attached to Squarebot.

Attach the receiver to the punched panel using four ¼” 8-32 screws and four keps nuts as shown. Be sure to leave one empty row of holes on the left of the receiver.

Attach the antenna holder using a 3/4” 8-32 screw and keps nut, securing the screw through the middle hole on the left edge of the canopy. Then, slide the yellow antenna wire from the receiver inside the antenna sleeve and place it into the antenna holder.

If you are using a VEX rechargable battery pack, attach the battery strap along the back
row of the punched pannel using two ½” 8-32 screws. Be sure it is oriented properly

Take the blue rechargable Vex battery and orient it as shown. If you are using the blue

VEX AA battery holder, simply attach it to the canopy in place of the battery pack.

Lock the battery into place using the battery strip.

Attach the canopy to the robot. To do this, secure the canopy onto the four offsets you attached earlier using four ¼” 8-32 screws.You will have to offset the canopy by one hole either to the left or the right.

Step 6. Wire Assembly

Plug the wire that is attached to the left motor into “MOTORS” port 3 on the
micro controller.

Plug the battery into the back of the micro controller

Take the 9” RJ-10 wire (the yellow wire that looks like a phone cable) and plug one end
into the back of the receiver module. Plug the other end into the port marked “Rx 1” on
the back of the micro controller.

Canonical has released the latest version of Ubuntu, the most popular opensource and Linux distro in the world. In last few weeks there was a major improvements in their mobile OS, surprisingly no one saw coming their latest desktop version with this much of quality improvements. But the desktop version was released with better features proving that Ubuntu had never stopped working on their desktop OS development.

Stunning Performance

First thing you will realize when you boot up Ringtail for the first time it has well improved speed and performance. Unlike Ubuntu's last edition "Gnom", this one doesn't seems to make any frustration to load the UI rapidly. At the first glance you will realize that new desktop seems more attractive than the older version. This one has not only the beauty also the stunning performance. This is your dream OS, it loads applications fast, you can cross work with application efficiently also it has improved to be more stable than other Ubuntu versions. Simply with this edition creators were able to outcome every bug and problems Ubuntu users been having. Also for usual default applications of Ubuntu like Files, Ubuntu Software Center, Media Player etc have improved designs and attractive set of icons.

Social Network Integration

May be this could be the best feature implanted in Ubuntu 13.04. With this utility you can store credentials of your online accounts and The information gets shared with applications like empathy IM and shotwell photo manager. Also, the same info goes to the photo lens and social network lens in the Unity dash.

Social network interagation can be experienced via unity dash. You can simply searching your friend's name you can view your interactions with him in facebook such as massages between and wallposts. You can also see friend's social updates such as statuses and picture upload. With Ubuntu Raring Ringtail you can to stay in touch with their friends more effectively.

Privacy Issue

Privacy in Ubuntu can seems to be a bit of a pickle. Ubuntu records the activities and utility behaviors for commercial matters. You can turn off the recording option and include online search options from your settings, but beware that turning off include search options will cause the Social integration malfunction.

Upgraded REPO

Ubuntu Software center is as usual and it sports the latest available applications. Ubuntu has the richest repo in theLinux world and I downloaded VLC player, Steam and added Skype 4.1 to my installation.

Performance

This is a problem that Ubuntu users should concern before upgrading into Ubuntu 13.04 though the latest version has a better performance rate it also take a considerable amount of your computer resources than older versions. I have run and tested Raring Ringtail in both i7 PC with high performances and a simple Duel core PC with very limited amount of resources. For the results to speak in i7 PC Ubuntu 13.04 seems to be working tremendously good on the other hand in Duel core PC it was working very good too but it wasnt perfoming very well to refect the real capabilities of this OS. So my opinion is don't install Ubuntu 13.04 if your PC don't meet the recommended requirements.

My personal opinion is this latest version seems to be stable and an advance system. But it giving the parameters of its privacy issue ill be sticking my gut into Ubutu 12.10 until i feel confident to use 13.04 without having the feeling that some one is watching me.

Other than the privacy issue Ubuntu Raring Ringtail is a great OS for both noobs and experts in Linux.

The Last of Us is a brilliant game designed to give you a real experience about a catastrophic event happened in USA.This game was designed by veteran computer game company "Naughty Dog Software" and published by "Sony Computer Entertainment".

News letters tell that PS3 version will be released in June 14th 2013 and many game reviewers says this could be the most wanted game in 2013, yes its that good.

The story is set two decades after a cordyceps-type fungus has killed millions, with nature gradually retaking the abandoned cities and towns. The survivors are hemmed inside quarantine zones, completely under the heel of the United States military, with order and screening for any Infected being viciously maintained under martial law. Joel, a hardened black-marketeer within one of the quarantine zones, goes through an event which makes him promise an old friend that he will get a young, fourteen year old girl named Ellie, away from the harsh regime to a resistance group known as the Fireflies. They begin a journey through the U.S., avoiding the Infected, humanoid creatures whose sole aim has become spreading the fungal infection. Game Play

This game is designed as a third person shooter game, while the player controls Joel, Ellie is been handled by AI. Player will have to fight the Infected former humans and survived humans, even though they are not infected, they are hostile to Joel and Ellie, its about survival player will have to fight these non-infected humans to gather their needs. The Last of Us is well covered game in combat, Gun fighting and face to face melee combat. Also Naughty dogs have developed a new AI system called "Balance of Power", This new system allows player to feel very realistic enemies such as in combat situation they are placed in by taking cover if they see the player, calling for help if they need it and even taking advantage of the players weaknesses, such as when Joel runs out of ammunition or when he is being attacked by other enemies.

Overall

Control Electrical Devices using Your Computer

This tutorial is about how to control Electronic devices via your computer. This DIY was found in Instructables. It doesnt need much programming and it could be a very effective way to automate your home. As you can see in above picture we will be computer controlling two 60 Walt bulbs using USBmicro - U451 device to program. You can find this module simply in electronic stores, if not you can purchase online http://www.usbmicro.com. This project was originally designed by indestructable, very simple but a very effective method. Mechanics behind USB Relay device and the bulbs is fairly easy to understand. Programming that we'll be involving is not that advance to perform huge tasks, but it could be the first step of something better.But using this method you can light up pretty much anything hooking to a wall. Lets get started and please don't hesitate to ask about anything using comments section.

Lets start with a guidance for your safety

First off - Any time that you work with 120V voltages, safety is paramount. If you are not comfortable working with mains power, please seek the assistance of someone who is.

Do not attempt to do this if you are not experienced and confident in wiring high voltages. Household current can kill or badly injure you if you who do not understand the danger.

Only the U451 relay contacts should be used for control/connection to 110V AC. The relay screw terminals are isolated from the other circuit connections. DO NOT touch the U451 when there is 110V AC present.

Required Parts

The major components used for this example instructable are:

USB relay interface USBmicro U451
two light bulbs
lamp sockets
110V AC cord

The example project will control two independent 110V AC lights with the two relays on the U451. The U451 and lights will be mounted on a wooden plank.

Mounting board

The lamp sockets are placed on either side of the wooden plank used for this project. The location of the lamps are copied to the plank and traced with a pen. A center line is drawn through the circle to aid in mounting the lamps.

Mounting the U451

The U451 is mounted next to the lamps with small standoffs and #4 screws. Pictured are the two 3-screw headers - one for each relay.

Wiring parts

Because of the high voltage and current involved with this example, you must use a wire of sufficient diameter. In this case 16 gauge will suffice.

Hot wire connection to the U451

The pair of wires from the two-wire plug consists of "hot" and "neutral" represented by black and white respectively.

Hot connects to each of the two common "c" terminals on the U451. This example project uses a wire nut to make the connection from the single source hot/black wire to the two pigtail wires that lead to the U451.

Connections to lamp.

The neutral/white connection is split into two wire pigtails that connect to the lamp socket (silvered connection).

One black wire connects from the N.O. (normally open) screw terminal connection on relay 1 to this lamp socket (brass screw on socket) while the other lamp socket connects in a similar way to the N.O. connection for relay 2.

Lamps and bulbs

Mount the lamp sockets, tighten the screws. Install the light bulbs. These test bulbs were incandescent. Other more energy sensible light bulbs could be used.

Check your wiring. Once you are sure about the 110V AC connections, attach the USB cable to the U451 and your PC. Plug the AC plug into an outlet.

Very simple PC programming

This project is brought to you by the magic of RobotBASIC. RobotBASIC (RB) is a free programming language and IDE (integrated development environment). It has support for controlling the USBmicro U451.

RB is free. FREE! You can write a program in the RB IDE and then save it as an .exe - a stand-alone executable that doesn't need the IDE to run. The USBm.dll is needed to go along with that file, but that is free, too.

The entire program is the 35 lines in the image below. The program is easy to copy into the IDE and simply run. Here is the program as text: (note the spacing gets screwed up.)

Running the program

When the program runs you are presented with two boxes that you can click on or off. If everything works the bulbs follow suit!

You now have control of two lights in this example.

This setup could easily be modified to control the power to almost anything that plugs in. And RobotBASIC (www.robotbasic.org) can be used to make much more complex programs that, for instance, turn on electric devices based on a complex PC schedule.

What is Google Glass

Google Glass has a camara, Mini display, battery, touchpad and microphone too, it is designed to capture your environment, make films, take pictures and right on to google search

So what is this Google glass? Why it has all the attention ? and what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a Google implication right in front of your eye ball all the time.

Google Glass is a basically a miniaturized computer, just like your Desktop computer and more portable devices like your phones and tablets, Google glass bring the data right in front of your eyes

Google Glass uses display technology instead to put data in front (or at least, to the upper right) of your vision courtesy of a prism screen. This is designed to be easily seen without obstructing your view. According to Google the display is "the equivalent of a 25-inch high definition screen from eight feet away". There's no official word on native resolution, but 640 x 360 has been widely mooted.

Overlaying data into your vision has obvious benefits; many of which are already functional in Google Glass. Directions become more intuitive (although it sounds like there is no GPS on board so you will have to pair it with your phone), you can view real-time translations or transcriptions of what is being said, and you can scroll through and reply to messages - all on the fly.

What can Google Glass do

Well according to Google these glasses can do pretty much anything that your phone or tablets do.It can run apps designed for it, these apps will let you have video conferences with your friends, and let them see what you're looking at. Google has a special app for this called "Google Hangout"

You'll also be able to use Google Maps to get directions, although with GPS absent from the spec list, you'll need to tether Glass to your phone.For that also, Google offers the MyGlass app. This pairs your headset with an Android phone. As well as sharing GPS data, this means messages can be received, viewed on the display, and answered using the microphone and Google's voice-to-text functionality.

Third parties are also already developing some rather cool apps for Google Glass - including one that allows you to identify your friends in a crowd.

How to control Google Glasses

Everyone was little peculiar about this, many thought it would be great to have it controlled by mind or eyeball tracker. Well its definitely not either of those but Google might introduce those technologies in next Google Glass versions, but for now we only have a touch controlled system like most of the modern phones and tablets. But it also has a great feature of motion sensing, you can activate your Google glass by tilting your head up or just tapping on the side.

What's the catch

There is always a loop hole in a good product, like that Google Glass has a loop hole called privacy. Google glass can directly effect the privacy of its user. Imaging you running into a public toilet and by accidentally letting your glass to record everything, that could be pretty nasty. Also Google glass doesn't seems to be well secured, it still has some exploits that can over take the glass unit . Also there is no lock down mechanism when you take off the glass, if anyone steals your Glass that person can use your device and use your apps under your identity.There is possibility of someone hacking into your device while its on your head, See the picture below.

How much will it be

Google glass isn't released yet, but Google has given some of very few people a beta testing unit for 1500$, in experts opinion the retail price would be slightly less.

Will this be the future

Robert Scoble certainly thinks so: "I will never live a day of my life from now on without it (or a competitor). It's that significant... it's the most interesting new product since the iPhone." All Google needs to do is make it $200.

Scott Stein is more measured. "It's an early product that's clearly in beta, but it's also an experiment. It's a social-interaction project, it's a living debate on wearable tech, and it's an app platform in need of apps. It's not necessarily a device that needs to exist, but it could have uses for some. And some of its uses may not have been invented yet."

The big question is whether Google can address the privacy concerns, Stevens says. "The future is incredibly bright for Google's Project Glass and it'd be a damn shame if it were dimmed by public outcry."

My personal opinion would be, I don't want to spend my Whole day in front of a 25 inch computer world.Also Google glass has some serious privacy issues to be fixed. But if Google fix its privacy issues and security it's definitely worth a shot

The Beetlebot is a very simple and efficient robot without any electronics components. It uses only two SPDT Switches which reverse the motor when clicked and roam him to obstacle free paths since this is simple robot to make even a small child could get a great start from this. You can build various kinds of robot insects by using the same technique which is used to build this one. Beetlebot v2 was originally designed by robomaniac credit should be gone to him . There is no silicon chip, that is, no integrated circuit, no transistor, no resistor, capacitor, etc. Beetlebot is very cheap to build.

Lets start building

Here is the list you're going to need to build this robot

Items for the robot:

2 x 1,5V motors

2 x SPDT ( single pole double throw ) switches with a metal lever

2 x AA or AAA battery

2 x Terminal connector ( see picture )

1 x AA or AAA battery holder

1 x Plastic or wooden pearl ( Spherical bead )

1 x 1 inch x 3 inch piece of metal or aluminum

1 x Toggle switch for the on/off switchs

Paper clips big and small

2 feets of wires around 22/24 Gauge size

Heat shrink that will fit over the motor shaft and some that will fit over the terminal connector

Electric tape and masking tape

Items for the body shell :

Round plastic lid to make the shell of the robot

Some spray can paint, the colour you want.

Clear varnish

Autobody filler putty or epoxy glue

2 x Small magnets to attach shell to body.

You need some 1,5Volts motor, not 3V or no event 12V!!

Each motors are powered by a single AA battery. You will drain your battery if you use a bigger motor. You can find them in toys or even at your local dollarrama, in little car, fans, etc! ( beware, they might really suck you battery down )

the recommended tools for this project:

1 x safety glasses!!

1 x soldering iron

1 x glue gun

1 x wire strippers

1 x side cutter

1 x scissors, knife, x-acto, etc

Step 1

First you need to set up your SPDT Switches

This is the main part of this robot also this is the most expensive part. This switch might cost you 1 - 4 $ but if you have recycling electronic equipment you might be lucky to find one by your self. SPDT Switches can be found in old VCR Players, Playstation or perhaps old toys you have.

Paste both switches into the battery holder using super glue or anything that fits

Step 2

Setting up the motors

Motors are going to be the legs of our robots but since it has a metal edge our beetle will have a hard time moving. You need to put on some grip on these motors, just like below pictures a rubber knob will do the trick.

Step 3

Motor mount

Here you will be mounting your motors and your battery holder

Take some Aluminium and cut it into 1 x 3 inch. It does not need be exactly 1 x 3 inch. You can build this as you want according to your imagination. But make sure you make something that your motors can hold up.

If you dont have access to aluminium you can simply glue your motors to the Battery holder. But using an aluminium mount is recommended.

Step 4

This is a bit tricky step, Don't get confused. Please look at the pictures carefully and attach the motors.

Here are solutions for few problems you might face during making this robot.

1 - The motor mount unglued from the battery holder.

You can simply glue the metal plate to the battery holder with epoxy. You will never be able to remove it!

Here is my tip: I tape a piece of masking tape to the battery holder and one to the motor mount. I then use epoxy to glue the two parts together. The glue dries onto the masking tape and not on the plastic of the battery holder. If one day I need to remove any item, I simply rip off the masking tape! Clever hen? In resume, you glue two pieces of masking tape together!

2 - The front of the robot is too heavy and the robot tilts to the front.

To avoid the tilting, you can try to mount the bracket to the front and not to the middle. This might not really help. On the next step you will see another solution. You can always put some weight on the back of the robot.

Step 6

Setting up the back caster

Make sure you mount the paper clip to the battery holder properly. You can use either glue or a gum tape. Using glue is the best way to make it permanent.

Step 7

Soldering the switches

Use paper clip to establish the connection between and solder them together as shown on above pictures.

Here is the principal and most important thing about the beetlerobot.

It is call the "third connection"

In you AA/AAA battery you have 2 wires that provide 3Volts.

In reality, we only use 1,5Volts for both motors.

How can we get half the voltage? Simple, you solder a wire like the picture below.
The new wire will touch the last wire you have solder in the last step and you will connect it to the battery holder. See picture.

Step 9

Powering up the robot

Here you are going to hook up the power to the robot. On your AA or AAA battery holder you have a red and a black wire. Like you probably know, the red wire is positif ( + ) and the black is negativ( - ).

Solder the wire like on the picture and everything is ready to be tested.

Put some battery in it.

Both motor should turn.

By pressing the left switch the left motor should turn the other way.

By pressing the right switch the right motor should turn the other way.

You are now ready to make the antenna.

Step 10

Take those terminals and remove the plastic. You will be able to solder to the terminal.
Take your pliers to press down on the terminal connector. After that, you will be able to slide it tight on the metal connector of the SPDT switches.

Step 11

Use paper clips to make the antennas. The feelers (sensors) of the bettle robot.

Solder the antennas to the terminal. I have added a heat shrink over my solder to hide it.
Clip the antenna onto the metal bracket of the switchs. If it's too loose, go back to step 14.

Your bettle robot is finished!

The following steps are going to make your robot more easthetic by adding a shell to the robot.

The next step is adding a switch to the robot instead of removing the battery.

Step 12

Mounting a power switch

To stop your robot, you need to remove the battery. This can get annoying this can be avoided by adding a simple switch.

Making the Shell Making the shell depends on your imagination you can make it look like what ever you want

To make the shell, you can use any sort of plastic container. The dark green is a peanut butter cap and the transparent green is from a gel container.

Like you have seen on the pictures, the gel cap is not really round. To cover the holes I have used a body car putty. Beware, car putty cure really fast!!

After sanding the lid smooth, it is time to paint it. Give it a couple of coats of primer.

After that you can start painting the shell in black or any other colour you like.

Give a couple of paint layers and let it dry. Take you time. I normally do that outside in the sun.

It is now time to add the circles to the robot. I took a coin to make the circles. I have used

masking tape to make the circles. Put them anywhere you want.

Take a other colour you want and start painting. Spray at a distance of 20 cm and one layer at the time. Give it a couple of layers.

Remove the stickers.

Done

After finishing your final touchups hook up the the shell to the robot, you can use either tapes or glue to hold them together.

Android is a Linux based operating system developed for touchscreen mobiles such as Smartphones and Tablet PCs. Since its developed on a Linux based environment running Android apps in a windows pc became challenging and nearly impossible.

But after much effort of developers in Bluestacks inc they have released an emulator which allows to run android apps in windows.

Bluestacks works not as a virutal machine but as an emulator but by running an emulation of the Android Davlik (also a VM) on top of Windows. BlueStacks doesn't emulate the actual hardware of a device. Instead, it emulates just enough of Android Davlik to server as a bridge between the application and Windows' APIs. Besides leveraging the Windows device's processor, be it x86 or ARM, BlueStacks can access the system's graphics hardware to accelerate the program's graphics processing. LayerCake also duplicates Android device's accelerometer tilting in applications and games that utilize it with the mouse or arrow keys. Pinch-to-zoom is also supported on mouse trackpads.

Bluestacks is a free software, however it has a premium feature which allows you to store and run Android apps without a limit.

How to run Bluestacks in your computer

After downloading run the EXE, Bluestacks will be starting to install after checking the .NET framework 3.5 completion. After that it will take few minutes to it install.

After installation is completed you will be redirected to program setup, In first screen it will be asking whether you own an Android Mobile. Make sure you click "Yes" if you are a Smart phone owner, this enables you to Sync your phone apps and Bluestack.You will then be prompted for an email address and your telephone number including country code. BlueStacks will then send you an email and SMS message detailing how to sync your phone with App Player. If you dont want your phone to be connected or if you don't have an android mobile simply click "No" and continue.

You're done installing and configuring Bluestacks, To launch an app, click once on the program's icon. To return to the App Player start screen, click on the BlueStacks icon in the center of the navigation bar at the bottom of the App Player window.

Bluestacks also has a built in App downloading feature. If you want to download a new app just enter its name on search bar and search. Bluestack will allow you to configure your downloads to Markets such as Amazon Appstore for Android, GetJar, and 1Mobile Market. Asphalt 7's gameplay is very similar to that of previous games in the Asphalt series, with the player given the option of either tilting the device or touching the side of the screen to steer. The game also has an online multiplayer mode, both local through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and global through an internet connection.

The good: Asphalt 7 is one of the best for arcade racing, offering fantastic graphics as you race through several environments and unlock 60 licensed real-world vehicles.

Windows 7 features dissolved in Windows 8

When Windows 7 was released, we had seen the list of Windows Vista features which were removed in Windows 7. Microsoft, based on user usage data, decides to enhance or deprecate a feature in the next release of the Windows operating system. Here is a list of some of the major noticeable features which were present in Windows 7, but have been removed in Windows 8.

1. The first thing any Windows user will notice is that the Start Button has been removed. The Start Menu too has been removed, and replaced with instead the Start Screen, which is the first thing you see when you log in to Windows.

2. Desktop Gadgets have been removed too. And along with it the Sidebar. While the Sidebar existed in Windows 7, it was not ‘on’ by default.

3. The Windows Explorer has undergone a sea-change. The command bar is gone and replaced with a cool ribbon UI. It is now referred to as File Explorer.

4. You wont see the Games Explorer now. Possibly because the focus is now on Games as Apps, and therefore, Microsoft may have decided to do away with it.

5. The Windows Basic and Windows Classic themes have been removed. The Aero Glass theme with transparent windows borders has been done away with. You now have a Metro UI Style theme with windows borders matching the hue of the wallpaper.

6. Press WinKey+Tab and see what happens in Windows 8. Flip 3D too is gone. Keeping pace with the times and the Metro UI, you now have a Metro or Modern UI Switcher which gets activated.

7. The Windows DVD Maker has been removed, possibly because it was not very popular with the users.

8. DVD playing feature has been removed from Windows Media Player. It will however be possible to play DVDs in Windows Media Center.

9. Windows Media Center is not present in Windows 8. You have to buy it as an extra. You will have to buy the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack, which includes Media Center, along with DVD playback in Media Center – but in Media Player, broadcast TV recording feature and playback (DBV-T/S, ISDB-S/T, DMBH, and ATSC), and VOB file playback.

11. File History has replaced Shadow Copies / Previous Versions. This makes the Windows Backup and Restore feature much more powerful.

12. Missing Windows CardSpace? Microsoft didn’t think you would. CardSpace was a technology in .NET Framework 3.0 that simplified and improved the safety of accessing resources and sharing personal information on the Internet.

13. The scary Blue Screen has been dropped to make way for a more friendly looking Blue Screen, which displays a sad emoticon, minimal information and the Error code.

14. Parental Controls has been improved upon to take on a much wider role. It is now comes in a new avatar called Family Safety.

15. The Windows Updates are available icon is no longer visible in the taskbar. If you have set Windows to inform you of available downloads, but not download them, in Windows 7 and earlier, you saw an icon whenever updates are available. Now you will see a notification in the bottom right corner of your login screen.

iPhone 5 Specifications and Review

Ahead of the iPhone 5′s official release on Friday, hands-on reviews from major newspapers and tech sites have started to roll in. It probably shouldn’t surprise us by this point, but the reviews are almost universally positive.

Considering the iPhone 4S was similarly well received, and the iPhone 5 is basically a thinner, lighter, faster, and less-slippery iteration, this isn’t really a surprise. The iPhone 4S was the fastest (and best) selling phone ever — and indeed, the iPhone 5 notched up a record-breaking two million pre-orders within 24 hours, double the previous record holder (the iPhone 4S). While we technocrats might be unhappy with Apple’s severe lack of groundbreaking advances, it’s also easy to see why Apple sticks with its winning formula.

Let’s take a closer look at what the hands-on reviews are saying.

Chassis

Almost every review begins by pointing out just how light the iPhone 5 is. At 112 grams, it’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S, and one of the lightest smartphones in the world. Otherwise, by virtue of its identical width, it feel a lot like the iPhone 4S. Many reviews also indicate that the iPhone 5 is easier to grasp and less slippery than its predecessor — which, as any owner of a cracked iPhone 4S can attest, is a very good thing.

Despite the larger 4-inch screen, it seems that each corner of the display can still be comfortably reached — unlike some of the larger Android smartphones, where it sometimes feels like you should’ve taken a beginner’s course in kung fu before attempting to manipulate it with one hand. The iPhone 5 is incredibly thin (7.6mm), which helps with the “reachability.”

Internals

There are two key changes inside the iPhone 5: A new A6 SoC, and a new all-in-one 28nm Qualcomm radio that supports a huge range of wireless networks, including LTE. We’ve already covered the new radio in some detail — and to be honest, most of today’s reviews don’t seem to pay much attention to wireless connectivity. In general, it sounds like the iPhone 5 makes calls and connects to LTE networks as well as any Android phone — no surprise there.

The A6, which we suspect is a custom-made chip designed by Apple, has been well received by reviewers. It’s obviously hard to separate the A6′s enhancements from any performance tweaks made to iOS, but at least synthetically the A6 performs admirably.

The iPhone 4S had a best-in-class display, and it seems the iPhone 5 keeps that tradition. Reviews say that the 16:9 Retina display is slightly brighter, and marginally better outside/in bright light. Apple also excitedly told us that the iPhone 5 is the first smartphone capable of displaying the full sRGB color gamut — and indeed, reviewers are saying that the iPhone 5′s color reproduction is very accurate and “neutral” (i.e. not overly contrasty).

Battery life

While a few reviewers said they were unable to accurately test the iPhone 5′s battery in such a short period of time (they’ve only had a couple of days with the device), in general the iPhone 5′s battery life does seem to improve upon the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S had mediocre battery life, and the iPhone 5 improves upon that — while being 20% thinner and lighter. Engadget, with heavy LTE/GPS/WiFi usage, squeezed out no less than 14 hours and 18 minutes of battery life.

As far as Apple’s concerned, this is the one area that it can still dominate the competition. While Samsung’s latest superphone might contain more doodads, Apple’s highly-integrated software/hardware stack and masterful industrial design team are still the best when it comes to combining fancy doodads and decent battery life. Remember, the battery in the iPhone 4S and 5 (1,400mAh) is 30% smaller than the Galaxy S3 (2,100mAh), and yet they should have comparable battery life.

Camera

Despite Apple making quite a lot of noise about the iPhone 5′s camera, it is fundamentally very, very similar to the shooter found in the 4S — and the hands-on reviews reflect that. Even a year after its release, though, the 4S still has one of the best cameras on the market — though that will probably change when the Lumia 920 arrives later in the year.

While the rear-facing camera hasn’t changed much, reviewers are very happy with the new 1.2-megapixel forward-facing FaceTime camera, which has four times the resolution of the iPhone 4S’s forward-facing VGA camera.

Software

Out of all the reviews, one of the only aspects of the iPhone 5 that received negative sentiment was iOS 6. While the newest version of iOS 6 has plenty of new features, and it zips along nicely with the new A6 SoC, some reviewers simply think that iOS feels a bitantiquated. Considering iOS has looked virtually the same since the first iPhone was launched in 2007, such sentiment isn’t all that surprising — especially if you’ve been following the rapid evolution of Android.

As far as consumers are concerned, though, there’s a lot to be said for familiarity. With the iPhone being by far the most successful smartphone in the world, familiarity is a very good way of ensuring repeat custom — and billions of dollars for Apple.

Non-American reviews have also highlighted the weakness of Apple’s own Maps app, which replaces Google Maps in iOS 6. In the US, the new Maps app should work as expected — but in other territories, you can expect seriously reduced functionality (no street new, no public transport, and so on).

Overall, the iPhone 5 seems to be scoring an average of 9 out of 10, with many reviewers giving it a full five stars.

How light is too light?

There was one other interesting thread that ran through many of the iPhone 5 reviews: Is the iPhone 5 too light?

Over the last few weeks, this topic has come up a few times — first with the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, which is significantly lighter than the iPad, and then the Lumia 920, which is actually quite heavy. I have had a few conversations with other writers and commenters about whether those few grams actually matter.

It’s obviously a very subjective question. At what point does something go from being “heavy” to “light”? There’s no denying that the iPad 3, at 650g, is too heavy for prolonged use — but is a 570-gram Kindle Fire HD 8.9 going to be any better? The Fire is 15% lighter — but does that mean I’ll be able to use it for 15% longer before my arms get tired?

It’s even trickier at the smartphone scale. The iPhone 5 weighs 112 grams and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams: Do those 20 grams affect your long-term usage patterns? Probably not. Surely the shape and size of the phone are important, too — how the weight is distributed on your palm will play a huge role in how light the phone actually feels. Is weight important when it comes to flimsiness? Or is that a factor of weight and construction?

But even so, reviews suggest that the iPhone 5 is too light — that it feels too light in the hand, and even “too light in the pocket.” Maybe it’s just relative, though — after you’ve had a heavier phone in your pocket for years, it’s obviously going to be a bit weird getting used to something lighter.

32-Core CPUs From Intel and AMD

What is it? With the gigahertz race largely abandoned, both AMD and Intel are trying to pack more cores onto a die in order to continue to improve processing power and aid with multitasking operations. Miniaturizing chips further will be key to fitting these cores and other components into a limited space. Intel will roll out 32-nanometer processors (down from today's 45nm chips) in 2009.
When is it coming? Intel has been very good about sticking to its road map. A six-core CPU based on the Itanium design should be out imminently, when Intel then shifts focus to a brand-new architecture called Nehalem, to be marketed as Core i7. Core i7 will feature up to eight cores, with eight-core systems available in 2009 or 2010. (And an eight-core AMD project called Montreal is reportedly on tap for 2009.)

After that, the timeline gets fuzzy. Intel reportedly canceled a 32-core project called Keifer, slated for 2010, possibly because of its complexity (the company won't confirm this, though). That many cores requires a new way of dealing with memory; apparently you can't have 32 brains pulling out of one central pool of RAM. But we still expect cores to proliferate when the kinks are ironed out: 16 cores by 2011 or 2012 is plausible (when transistors are predicted to drop again in size to 22nm), with 32 cores by 2013 or 2014 easily within reach. Intel says "hundreds" of cores may come even farther down the line.

The object you’re viewing and the words you speak will be transmitted to your PMC, which will interpret your intent, find and compute and then transmit the results back to you visually and/or verbally. Look at a restaurant and say, “Do they have good salads there?” A moment later, you will hear the highest-rated salads, communicated via your information glasses either by visual display or audible voice, depending on what you are doing at that moment, like driving.

It can create almost any shape, even those that can’t be made by traditional manufacturing. The downside today is that the process is slow, costly, and often doesn’t produce parts strong enough for real world use. The technology in this industry is always advancing, and in the future, it will be able to produce robust parts quickly and cheaply.

Autonomous Cars

A few years ago, DARPA ran its Grand Challenge, in which teams competed to race fully autonomous cars that drove themselves. They were tested in off-road, highway and urban settings. Some of these competitors later went to work for Google’s autonomous vehicle efforts.

In the future, we will have autonomous cars, where driver control will be optional. Even though the thought might seem scary, the cars will be safer than any car you’d pilot yourself. They will constantly evaluate their current environment with multiple sensors -- and they’ll never get distracted by text messages.

Will they be complex to operate? Not at all. Your PMC will act as a user interface to any device, including your autonomous car. It will know your schedule and address book, so when you get into your car one hour before an appointment, the car’s GPS will instantly display the destination address and arrival time. All you have to do is say, “Let’s go!”
