Print Preview or Print error while using Outlook 2007

Microsoft Outlook 2007 is considered to be most stable version in Outlook’s series. However have you been to the problem where you are not able to get the print preview while printing any email? The error message clearly says that “There is problem with the selected printer. You might need to reinstall this printer. Try again, or use a different printer.”

The human intuition will tell to uninstall and re-install printer on your computer. However to everyone’s surprise it will not resolve the problem that you are dealing with the print preview. Many times I have seen that the user has re-installed Microsoft Outlook thinking it might have gone corrupt and still remain at the same situation.

Solution:

The main culprit of the problem is a bad Microsoft Office 2007 Update (KB 2509470). So we need to uninstall it to get the Print Preview work again.
If uninstallation of KB 2509470 fails or system hangs in the process, download HOTFIX from Microsoft and run it.
Make sure you have Windows Installer package 4.5 installed on your computer before you install above hotfix.
Install hotfix and restart your computer.
Now uninstall update KB 2509470 and restart computer again.
Then download another Extended Security Update and install it (For Windows XP).
Download Extended Security Update for all other platforms of Windows and install it.
Restart your computer once more
Check your Print Preview and hope it will work fine now

The common problem for the missing Print Spooler services is due to its corrupt service file to handler. To repair such instances, we need to first look for the“spoolsv.exe” in “%Windir%\System32\”. If it is not present there, replace its copy from “%Windir%\winsxs”folder or search for it on your computer as Windows generally keeps its copy in its folder. 3. Save the file to Desktop with the name spooler.reg.

Run Command Prompt as Administrator and execute the following command

Now log off and log on again. If it doesn’t work, jump to step 3.

(It checks hard disk for errors and recovers readable information.)
Press Y to perform check at next start up and reboot your PC. (Remember not to touch your computer’s keyboard or mouse as this may bypass CHKDSK process while system reboots again)
Let the CHKDSK finish and repeat step 1 again and this time it will work.

Once we had the administrator’s password, we were able to reset Windows password then. But can it be done with Windows 7 as well? Well the answer is YES, you can create it with ease.

Windows 7 does allow you to make a password-reset disk well in advance if in case you ever forget your administrator password and do not have it written down somewhere nor set hint question and answer to recover lost password. To make a password-reset disk, you can either use a portable USB drive or a CD/DVD. We will be using a USB driver here as it is very convenient in terms of its use and readiness.

Getting started with password reset disk, you need a spare USB flash drive completely formatted. Now plug the USB drive to an open USB port on the computer then click on Start menu > Control Panel. Then click on “User Accounts”. On the left pane of the User Accounts box, click on the link which says “Create a password reset disk.” When Forgotten Password Wizard appears, just follow the wizard’s steps to select your USB drive to store your information and type your current password to save with it.

After completing the Password Reset Disk, store the USB drive to a safe location where you can find it easily when in its need.

Unable to print from Internet Explorer

There are circumstances when we are not able to print from our Internet Explorer and not even see print preview however the same printer works well with all other programs. Well there is nothing to worry about spending money on getting it fixed by the professional technician as I have all the relevant troubleshooting given here. Just follow the given steps and become pro yourself.

If you are using a Canon printer and getting an error while using printer from MS IE, then download the latest hot fix for this problem from Microsoft. Else continue with the below mentioned methods.

Method 1
Some user accounts don’t have permission to print the documents. Perform below steps to fix this problem,
1. Go to the Start Menu, do a click on All Programs, and do a right click on ‘Internet Explorer’.
2. You have to select the option ‘Run as administrator’ in the context menu.
3. Enter the credentials of Administrator user, if prompted.
4. Try to have print preview and then print a Web page in IE.
If you are still getting this problem then continue with the steps mentioned in following methods.

Method 2
The IE 7, 8, and 9 has a new feature named ‘Protected Mode’. Disable this mode with following steps,
1. Launch the MS IE.
2. Go to the Tools Menu and click Internet Options.
TIP: One can also open this from Control Panel > Internet Options.
3. Go to the Security Tab and clear the checkbox titled, ‘Enable Protected Mode’.
4. Restart it.
Try to take a printout from the MS IE. If it doesn’t work then proceed with following steps.

Method 3
Temporary Folder of the Windows User account has a folder named ‘Low’. The printing issues with Internet Explorer also occur when this folder is missing. Perform below steps to create it,
1. Go to the Start Menu and click on ‘Run’.
2. Type %temp% and press the Enter key.
3. Check for ‘Low’ folder. If it is present then continue with the next method else create a new blank folder named ‘Low’.
4. Close the Windows Explorer.
Check MS IE is printing the documents now. Continue with below steps if you still face this problem.

Method 4
Perform below steps to reset the low integrity of Low folder,
1. Go to the Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories; right click on the Command Prompt.
2. You have to select the option ‘Run as Administrator’. Enter the login credentials for administrator user, if required.

Enable or Disable UAC From the Windows 7 / Vista Command Line

Its always fun to work with command prompt in Windows. It always make you feel smarter in front of your customers. Back days I had talked about how to uninstall programs using Command Prompt, so keeping the trend going ahead I will be discussing on how to enable or disable UAC (User Access Control) using Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista.

All you need to do is fire up your command prompt with administrative rights. For doing so, simply right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator. Once you have the command box on your screen you are ready to geek.

Disable UAC

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Enable UAC

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

After you enable or disable UAC, you will have to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

However do not forget to backup your Windows Registry settings before updating registry using command prompt.
