Symantec has launched its "Norton Everywhere" plan

Symantec has launched its "Norton Everywhere" plan which will stick security protection and cloud-storage access on Google's Android and Apple iPhone smartphones.

There will be a free app for Android and iPhone, called Norton Connect, that will enable access to data stored in Symantec's cloud-based storage service for those subscribing to a service such as Norton 360. In a press release Dan Nadir, senior director for product management at Norton said that PC-based access to cloud storage is more typical today, but Norton Connect extends access to subscribers with Android and iPhone devices.

The Norton Connect apps are expected to be available in June, the Android version will also be available directly from Symantec. The outfit plans to release data-protection and management software for Android called Norton Smartphone Security for Android 1.0. This will be Norton's first subscription-based security software for Android and will let users remotely disable a phone if it's stolen or lost. It will hit the shops in June. The Smartphone Security for Android software also will watch for known malware. Norton designed the security-protection software to watch the apps you're running on Android, and it will "flag apps behaving in suspicious ways.

The software also has a call-blocking mechanism and a way to tell who's calling you. It also features something called "roaming protection" will notify you if you're in a different roaming area, where additional charges are likely to apply. Norton is rolling out entirely new service-based security software aimed at protecting mobile smartphones, PCs and Macs.

Users opt for Norton DNS which will flag or even block dangerous content or Web sites. That will also be released in Junesource

intel's k series

Intel has finally gave the green light on its "unlocked" K-series 32nm Core i5-655K and 45nm Core i7-875K CPU, and now we can finally see what these two new CPUs are capable of and are they actually any good. All reviews agree on at least one thing, as while it is nice to see an affordable "unlocked" CPUs from Intel, the performance, or to be precise, the overclocking potential is anything but impressive.

The lack of overclocking potential actually isn't that strange as these two are exactly the same as the Core i5-650 and the Core i7-870 and Intel's intention wasn't aimed at and overclocking beast or anything similar. Intel made these CPUs for system integrators as, thanks to the unlocked multiplier, they can offer pre-overclocked systems without any additional hassle or special (read expensive) motherboards with BIOS that is capable of high overclock.

The quad-core Core i7-875K works at 2.93GHz, has eight threads, 8MB of L3 cache and a 95W TDP. This one will set you back US $342 which isn't that bad considering that you get a quad-core with an unlocked multiplier. The slower Core i5-655K is a dual-core clocked at 3.2GHz, has four threads, 4MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 73W. Bear in mind that the Core i5-655K comes with integrated graphics as well and has a price tag of US $216.

Both of the CPUs should offer same overclocking result on air as Intel doesn't use a special binning process for these two, although the overclocking is much easier thanks to the unlocked multiplier. The two new K-series CPUs do make sense if you are an enthusiast that wants to do some mild overclocking on air/water cooling as it is always easier to simply raise the multiplier in order to overclock the CPU.source

Geforce GTX 465 has 200W TDP

GTX 465 is a cut down version of Geforce GTX 470, as we said in previous reports.

It’s a dual slot card as you can expect and it has two 6-pin connectors and the recommended PSU should be at least 550W. The thermal design power of a chip (TDP) is 200W, which is just 15W less than with GTX 470 card. It is still 50W less from much faster Geforce GTX 480.

The thermal threshold of this 40nm chip is 105° Celsius and this didn’t change from the GTX 470 and 480. Overall GTX 465 will simply bring a new price, and 1024MB memory instead of 1280 that GTX 470 has and its bandwidth will sink to 102.6GB/s from 133.9 GB/ with GTX 470.

This is due to a 256-bit memory interface. The launch date is next week.source

Larrabee GPU's final destination

Intel's director of product technology in Media Relations Global Communications Group Bill Kircos has announced that Larrabee, as a graphics card that should come in the near future, is dead.

When we say Larrabee, we mean the discrete graphics part that was supposed to throw ATI's and Nvidia's high end chips on their knees. This is what Bill said: „We (Intel) will not bring a discrete graphics product to market, at least in the short-term. As we said in December, we missed some key product milestones. Upon further assessment, and as mentioned above, we are focused on processor graphics, and we believe media/HD video and mobile computing are the most important areas to focus on moving forward.“

Since Intel said that the current Larrabee graphics has been canned in December, this is not big news but this was a good way to kill any hope that next generation discrete Larrabee is coming to market anytime soon.

We believe that it would be easier to simply buy a major graphics company and make a chip as Intel has proven many times in the past that it cannot make a decent integrated or graphics chip.

Yes, Intel’s HD (cough) graphics can play some decent HD 1080P even via Wireless but it cannot do the same for gaming, not to mention that it lacks DirectX 11. We are confident that Intel will continue Larrabee graphics project simply as Paul Otellini, the CEO of Intel is annoyed with the fact that Jensen is kicking him so hard in many media around the world.

On the other hand Larrabee as the super computer parallel computing part has a chance and Intel plans to announce something about it at International supercomputing conference, the HPC Event on May 30th – June 3rd in Hamburg Germany.source

Sony Develops Ultra-Thin Rollable OLED Display

Can anything beat the impression of rolling out a scroll and reading out its contents to an avid audience? Not if your scroll is actually an ultra-thin OLED display developed by Sony.
That's how Sony decided to showcase its new display technology. As moving images were displayed on an organic thin film transistor (OTFT) matrix, the whole setup was repeatedly rolled around a 4 millimeter tube. The ultra-thin 4.1" display, which featured a density of 121 ppi, was even stretched.
The key breakthrough that allowed this minor miracle to occur, according to Sony, was the development of flexible 20 micrometer-thick integrated circuits.
These ultra-thin ICs replace conventional "rigid" chip-based counterparts that were apparently a limitation in display engineering. Sony also made sure to point out that the final production process will be energy efficient and eco-friendly, to quote a corporate responsibility cliché.
Now we're not really sure if consumers will go gaga over gadgets they can roll up into a pencil-sized case (ok, maybe they will?). And artifacts appeared as the ultra-thin display was manipulated. Still, let's hope Sony's actually a year or two away from perfecting this technology for mass enjoyment. Nothing would be more awesome than unfurling an HDTV for an avid audience come 2012. Or what about a full-color HUD interface built into glasses?source

iPad feel suns heat

Apple's new iPad retreats from the sun like a vampire. Not only can't you read the screen if an iPad is exposed to sunlight, it appears that the beast starts to overheat and switch itself off.

Some owners are complaining that their new Apple gadgets are shutting down when used out and about. PC Magazine editor Zach Honig stuck his in the fridge when he saw the warning “iPad needs to cool down before you can use it."

The iPad's operational temperature is listed by Apple as 32° to 95° F when on, with a nonoperational temp of -4° to 113° F. Those must be internal temperatures, though. This problem has been noted on the iPhone before. It looks like, despite being made in California, Apple can't really handle hot weather.

However it could also be an undead vampire product which sucks your bank account dry. source

Geforce GTX 465 is cut down 470 with CUDA cores

One way of looking at the upcoming performance Geforce GTX 465 is that the chip is a cut down version of GTX 470. The Geforce GTX 470 has four graphics processing clusters while Geforce GTX 465 has three.

The GTX 465 has 11 streaming multiprocessors while GTX 470 has 14. When it comes to CUDA cores GTX 465 has 352 while GTX 470 has 448. The number of Texture Units on GTX 465 is 44 while GTX 470 has 56. The GTX 465 has 32 ROP units while GTX 470 has 40.

The core clock on both is 607MHz GPU and the Processor clock (CUDA core) clock is the same for both chips, 1215MHz.

The memory interface and memory itself is not the same for both cards but you can see that GTX 465 was simply a trimmed version of GTX 470 and therefore won’t pull off a miracle.

The other upcoming card possible branded as Geforce GTX 460 based on new GF 104 chip might make a bigger difference, but it comes sometime this summer, most probably after June, if not later. source

Intel outs new 32nm ULV chips

32 is Intel's number of the day. The chipmaker has launched a new line of ultra low voltage processors aimed at ultra-thin notebooks.

All six parts are manufactured in 32nm, unlike the previous CULV generation, which was churned out in 45nm. Intel claims that the chips have been refined and that they are 32 percent smaller than their predecessors. The new parts should also deliver at least 32 percent more performance.

Despite higher performance, TDPs and power consumption have stayed very low, thanks to the 32nm process and the inclusion of integrated graphics in the chip package. All six chips boast an 18W TDP and integrated graphics clocked at 166MHz, which can clock up to 500MHz depending on the load.

The Core i7 660UM is clocked at 1.33GHz, but with Turbo the clock goes up to 2.4GHz, which is quite impressive for an ULV part. It has 2x256kB of L2 cache and 4MB of L3 and it costs $278. The Core i5 540UM and 430UM are both clocked at 1.2GHz, but on Turbo they overclock to 2.0GHz and 1.73GHz respectively. Both feature 2x256kB of L2 cache and 3MB of L3. The Core i3 330UM runs at 1.2GHz and it doesn't support Turbo overcloking. Like the rest of the Core series, it's a dual-core with 4 threads.

The Pentium U5400 is clocked at 1.2GHz, but it's not multithreaded and it doesn't feature Turbo. The Celeron U3400 runs at 1.03GHz, it's not multithreaded and it has 2MB of L3 cache. At $134 it's the cheapest of the lot.

The pricing remains very close to the previous CULV generation, but thanks to Turbo Boost, consumers will get quite a bit more for their money. Intel has plenty of design wins for the new ULV series and we're expecting to see quite a few thin-and-light notebooks with these 32nm parts at Computex. source

Via is coming with $100 tablet

VIA expects $100 tablet devices containing its chips to reach the U.S. in the second half of 2010, offering a more reasonable alternative to Apple's over priced iPad.

VIA is planning to release five different models, ranging in price from $100 to $150. The gear will run Google Android operating system. Apple’s iPhone already competes with Android in the market for smartphones, with the Google software running devices from HTC and Motorola.

Apple is so worried that Android will take it to the cleaners it is suing HTC claiming bits of its software is under the bonnet of Android. HTC is counter suing. VIA Director of Marketing Richard Brown said that the tablet market has been legitimated by Apple, but Android is bringing a lot of diversity to the market. There are different sizes and different looks and feels. source

Futuremark officially announces DirectX 11 3DMark

Following the recent rumours and first screenshots, Futuremark has officially announced its next 3DMark, the 3DMark 11. The new version of the quite popular benchmark will be based on a DirectX 11 engine and will support all the DirectX 11 goodies like tessellation and compute shaders, just as we would expect it to.

Futuremark's 3DMark benchmarks were always a decent way to put top notch systems on their knees, and it looks like that the new 3DMark 11 will not be any different. With support for compute shaders and tessellation, as well as multi-thread support, it will certainly be interesting to see how powerful the graphics cards and systems actually are.

The first real live preview will be available at Computex, and since MSI is the new Sapphire for 3DMark, it shall be shown at MSI's Computex booth. Those that happen to drop by will be able to see a "Deep Sea" part of the benchmark and probably see how far can it be pushed with those DirectX 11 cards that are available right now.

We hope that MSI will set at least two or three different systems so we can see how good is the new 3DMark 11 in comparing Nvidia's and AMD's DirectX 11 flagships. source

Nvidia has now officially announced its first DirectX 11 mobile GPU

Nvidia has now officially announced its first DirectX 11 mobile GPU, the GTX 480M.

Although some details were already out thanks to Eurocom, we now have the full specs on this MXM 3.0b GPU. It packs 352 CUDA Cores and works at 425MHz for the GPU, 850MHz for those Cuda cores or simply shaders, and 1,200MHz for the memory which is paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. More conveniently Nvidia hasn't listed the TDP of new mobile GPU but had been keen on saying that it is 2-way SLI ready, 3D Vision ready and features CUDA, PhysX and DirectX 11 support.

If these clock numbers seem to you a bit familiar than you are on the right track, as this looks like nothing more than the underclocked GTX 465, although underclocked is pretty much an understatement as we are better of saying that this looks like a GTX 465 on life support.

Back when Eurocom leaked first info there was talk of a 100W TDP, and by the looks of it, these unimpressive clocks can certainly fit into that margin considering how power-hungry Fermi actually is.

According to Nvidia, its Geforce GTX 480M mobile GPU will show up in a Clevo notebook soon, while Eurocom's should show up sometime next month.source

Sevral sites tested Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive

judging by an early review posted by sevral sites, the new drives are worth every penny and cent, except for euro cents, which are now almost worthless thanks to Greece's recently ousted government. The reviewer praised the Momentus XT in every conceivable way. They are faster than HDDs, cheaper than SSDs and in RAID 0 they can catch up with SSD drives as well. Basically, they combine the best of both worlds.

It appears that the drives are very intelligent when it comes to managing the ultra fast 4GB SLC chips, as they quickly pick up user habits and speed up the most frequently used applications. Boot times are also greatly improved and the reviewer claims the SLC shaved some 13 seconds from the usual startup time of the test rig.

This about sums it up: "The Seagate Momentus XT has been dubbed around the net as a SSD killer. Would I call it that? No, but what I would call it an HDD killer."source

Nvidia's upcoming dual-GPU card will end up with the GTX 490 brand.

As we previously reported, Nvidia canceled the original dual-Fermi D12U-50 because it was a bit too complex and generated as much heat as a medium yield nuclear warhead. Hence, Nvidia apparently chose to use GF104 cores for its new dual-GPU card. Despite this, the rumoured GTX 490 will end up with a 375W TDP.

According to KitGuru.net, the new card will be branded GTX 490, but there's still no info on exact specs or launch dates. We can only speculate that Nvidia will launch the dual headed beast by the end of the summer, just in time for the nag-fueled-back-to-school shopping spree.

However, it's still far from clear how the new card will measure up to AMD's HD 5970, as the high TDP could limit its clocks and recently introduced HD 5970 cards with 4GB of memory could give AMD a fighting chance.

3DMark 11 with MSI

It looks like MSI will be one of the names that we will see in FutureMark's 3DMark 11. According to what MSI had to show at its pre-Computex event, MSI's logo will be present in at least one part of the 3DMark 11 benchmark.

In addition, MSI also pretty much confirmed that the new Futuremark 3DMark will be all about DirectX 11. MSI was also keen to point out that the new 3DMark 11 will be bundled with MSI hardware, most likely graphics cards, once it appears on the market.

MSI is keeping all the cool and juicy details for Computex and we are sure that we will see much more it heats up. Apparently, Futuremark is also preparing a preview of its own which could appear pretty soon.

The new Futuremark 3DMark is scheduled for release sometime in Q3 this year, probably September source

MSI coming with external gpu solution

MSI has another interesting product up its sleeve and although it isn't innovative it is still enough to draw some pretty good attention, the Graphics Upgrade Solution, aka GUS.

MSI's GUS is an external graphics card interface that connects to the notebook via Express card interface and has support for PCI-Express x16 graphics cards. According to MSI, the GUS is capable of boosting the graphics performance of the notebook by over 19 times. We guess that MSI compared it to Intel's integrated solution rather than dedicated mobile graphics card that can be found in a lot of notebooks.

We mentioned that the device isn't very innovative as we already seen such attempts made by both AMD and Asus XG Station which didn't do so well, at least not well enough to brag about. Despite the fact that GUS uses Express card interface, MSI did mention that it somehow managed to overcome previous limitation and that they can use over 70 percent of the theoretical bandwidth. This is done by using a shielded copper cable and some sort of improved internal electronics. MSI also plans to stick with GUS and move it to the USB 3.0 interface in close future.

Of course, MSI still plans to use the GUS with mainstream graphics cards like the HD 5670 as everything about would be an overkill and simply a waste of money. The Express card interface makes sense as it is the most widespread interface. Another good feature of the GUS is the multi-display support as theoretically you could have up to four simultaneous display outputs, three from HD 5670 equipped GUS and one from the notebook.

MSI's GUS isn't going to bring the full gaming experience to underpowered notebooks but it still can pack enough punch for some light gaming. The standalone GUS should be available at around US $100 while it will also be available with HD 5670 and possibly some other GPUs for around US $200.

Whether the performance will be any good is left to be seen. MSI should show the device at Computex as well, and hopefully we'll see some performance numbers then.source

Nvidia version 257.15 beta

Nvidia has rolled out its newest Geforce graphics card driver, version 257.15 beta. The new driver feature PhysX 9.10.0222 driver and supports Geforce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, 300 and 400 series graphics card including the upcoming GTX 465 and regular ION GPUs.

Although it lacks the support for Nvidia's 3D Vision Surround that would be available sometime in June, the new driver features a whole lot of performance improvements for GTX 400 series graphics cards, brings support for Open GL 4.0 for GTX 400 series, adds support for new extreme Antialiasing modes for 3-way SLI PCs, including up to SLI 48x AA for GeForce 200 series GPUs and up to SLI 96x AA for GeForce GTX 400 series GPUs, features new Nvidia Control Panel setup page for SLI and PhysX, new NCP setup page for control over CUDA GPUs, support for new "Quality" mode for Nvidia's Ambient Occlusion control panel feature, support for CUDA Toolkit 3.1, and last but not least, support for Blu-ray 3D with Nvidia Vision technology.

The performance improvements include aq bunch of games such as Aliens vs. Predator, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Battleforge, Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2, Crysis, Metro 2033 and much more. You can check out the full list of performance improvements over at Nvidia's download page. download

HP ENVY users suffers from Blank Screen

It seems a significant number of people using HP's Envy 15 model of laptop are experiencing issues with their machines. Forums around the Web indicate screens are randomly going blank and the only way to fix the problem is to restart your machine.
The complaints date back as far as March and though this thread on the HP forums shows that someone posting two months ago was offered a replacement or refund of the purchase price when he phoned HP Envy Support, posters from this week aren't having as much luck:

"I just called up HP about this issue with my Envy, and they refuse to accept its a Hardware issue. They insist that the problem is with the hard drive/ operating system. They offered to let me send it in for re-imaging, but if no fault was found with the hard-drive they would charge me! I informed them that many people are suffering from these blank screens, but the support guy wouldn't even acknowledge that their could be a hardware fault!"

Engadget reports that some users are also having problems with purple webcams. It seems the webcam on a select number of units only work properly under fluorescent lighting. Using it under incandescent lighting turns everything purple.source

Yesterday Google announced it was teaming up with Intel, Sony and Logitech for a little venture called Google TV. Though Sony is to supply the televisions (and Intel the chips for those tellies), Logitech is supplying not only the remotes and keyboards but standalone companion boxes for those of us who don't feel like investing in a new TV just for Google. Though there's little in the way of official information floating around the Web, Engadget mosied on down to Logitech's booth at Google I/O and got an eye-full of the technology and scored some juicy details about the box. An example? Well how about controlling your TV with your smartphone via either an iPhone or Android application?

the Logitech product manager pulled out a Nexus One and iPhone," writes Sean Hollister. "He explained that the companion box has all the technology of Logitech's $400 Harmony 900 remote and extends it to your handset over WiFi."
Using the smartphone app, you can not only control the Google browser but also a Samsung TV, Onkyo receiver and TiVo set top box.
Specswise, you're looking at Intel's CE4100 1.2GHz "Sodaville" Atom CPU, 4GB of RAM, 802.11n WiFi, 2xUSB, a rear I/O panel with a wired LAN jack, two IR headers and a pair of HDMI 1.3 ports.source

HP Making Flexible Display

Both LG and Samsung have launched Dick Tracy-esque wristwatch cell phones. Now HP is fighting them for the title of most bad-ass watch ever with a new piece designed for the military. Unlike LG and Samsung, HP is actually referring to this thing as the Dick Tracy watch.

The watch will use HP's flexible display that has been talked about in recent months. Carl Taussig, director of information surfaces at HP Labs in Palo Alto, California, claims the thin plastic won't break and says it only has "the potential" to be flexible. A March demonstration of HP's flexible display shows HP's CTO rolling up the display and stuffing it in a poster tube, which would certainly suggest it has more than the potential to be flexible. However, Taussig's remarks could have something to do with the fact that CTO Phil McKinney said during the demonstration that rolling up the displays is not something you'll be able to do time and time again without damaging the material. McKinney said the display would eventually fail if rolled more than a few times, citing six as the maximum number of times you could bend the display.
CNN reports that HP's watch will show maps and other strategic information to soldiers in remote combat fields. The display will run on solar energy using panels printed onto the watches using a technology developed by PowerFilm.
HP hopes to have a prototype ready in about a year.source

GF GTX 465 Accidently Shipped to Customer

Even though the GeForce GTX 465 hasn't been announced yet, it seems that one may have trickled out to a consumer who purchased a GeForce GTX 470 – and got less than he bargained for.
Username "Moratorius" bought a Galaxy GeForce GTX 470, but had difficulty installing it because the driver didn't recognize it. Through some file editing, he finally got it to install, but still something wasn't quite right.
The card was identifying itself as a GeForce GTX 465 along with having 1024MB of RAM, as opposed to the 1280MB that the GTX 470 is supposed to have.

The core clock of the card runs at 608MHz, and the 1024MB of GDDR5 has a clock speed of 3208MHz. The shaders are clocked at 1215MHz at 256 bits.
All of those specs match up with the leaked Asus GeForce GTX 465, so this could be the real deal.

Users are starting to use "Bing"

Things are starting to look better for Microsoft's Bing. Users are starting to use "Bing" as a verb, and searches are up. But Bloomberg warns that it is a long way from unseating Google and it has yet to see advertisers using the service in any real numbers.

In April about 12 percent of all Web searches were performed using Microsoft's year-old search engine. Meanwhile, Google's share is flat at 64 percent. Redmond has has been trying to build its presence in search since 2004 and spent huge amounts in marketing.

Most of the roughly $6 billion in losses racked up by Microsoft's online business division since 2006 are related to Bloomberg quotes various advertising agencies as saying they are taking a "wait-and-see" approach to Bing. However they are starting to ask if whether they are "underinvested" in Microsoft's search engine.

Bing may never come close to passing Google as the top search engine, but it may not have to. The 2009 deal with Yahoo! makes Bing the search technology that Yahoo will use on its Web sites, though it won't use the Bing name. If Yahoo and Microsoft hold their current shares, Bing will power nearly 30 percent of all searches. source

Core i5 580M to replace Core i5 540M

Intel launched the Core i5 540M back in January and it will be selling this CPU in the Power Optimised Performance (POP2) market segment until Q4 2010.

At this time, the company plans to launch new CPU simply called Core i5 580M. While the Core i5 540M works at 2.53GHz the new Core i5 580M will be bumped up to 2.66GHz. With the help of Turbo this new CPU will increase its clock to 3.33GHz, while its graphics can jump all the way to 766MHz.

The previous Core i5 540M can turbo overclock to 3.06GHz, while its base clock is 2.53GHz. Both chips are based on Arrandale 32nm CPU and 45nm graphics core, they have a base graphics frequency of 500MHz, two cores and four thread support, 1066MHz FSB and 3MB of cache.

They both have a 35W TDP rating and the only real difference between Core i7 620M and Core i5 580M will be that i7 part has 4MB cache while i5 part has 3MB. Don't forget that i7 will certainly cost more.

The expected time of the release for Core i5 580M is Q4 2010. source

According David Kirkpatrick’s soon to be released book, “The Facebook Effect“, Kirkpatrick confirms that relationship patterns were something that Mark Zuckerberg often toyed with. In the book, Kirkpatrick writes that as the service’s engineers built more and more tools that could uncover such insights, Zuckerberg conducted experiments.

For instance, he concluded that by examining friend relationships and communications patterns he could determine with about 33 percent accuracy who a user was going to be in a relationship with a week from now. To deduce this he studied who was looking which profiles, who your friends were friends with, and who was newly single, among other indicators. Indicators included if you were chatting with another girl instead of your girlfriend? Are you being tagged in a lot of photos with the same person?

Since Facebook has a lot of information about who you are viewing regularly as well as what your communication patterns are it is possible to determining the future of your relationship. In otherwords they are actively monitoring your behavior on the site to determine what should be displayed in the feed. Maybe soon we will get notifications that your relationship is on the rocks. source

next gen centrino to get fast network

Intel’s next generation platform scheduled for Q1 2011 is going offer a few novelties on the WiMAX side. The Huron River platform is supposed to replace Calpella and it will pack Sandy Bridge 32nm monolithic CPU and graphics, all on one unified core.
When it comes to the network part they will continue pushing Intel's Centrino Advanced N + WiMAX 6250 adapter, codenamed Kilmer Peak. Intel has started using Kilmer Peak 2x2 AGN adapters in its top of the Calpella high end notebook list.

Intel also plans to introduce a few new Centrino adapters with WiFI + Blutooth support but this is aimed for some other market segments.

We are not sure how successful WiMAX might be in 2011, but we can only hope it will do well.source
