One of the advantages of virtual reality is that it allows immersion in a virtual space that is accessible remotely by several users.

Hence, it is the perfect way to feel close to each other without being physically together. Thanks to technology, it is now possible to organize meetings in a virtual reality office and facilitate remote collaboration and work at home.

There are several advantages of a virtual meeting room, such as:

Eliminating costs and travel time

No meeting rooms required for rent

No distance limit between participants

Even more immersive use with virtual reality headsets

A way to fight against health risks like the coronavirus

In addition to traditional video conferencing software such as Skype, Zoom, and Teamviewer, here are some AR/VR apps for remote collaboration!

It is expanding at a quick pace, and in a very short period of time, it has revolutionized the way we interact with our surroundings. This technology has quickly turned into a very promising technology that can help us by transmitting data without any interaction with a computer system over a network. In fact, it is expected that IoT devices worth trillions of US dollars will be installed across the globe by 2025.

While the promise is tremendous, and this technology has a lot of potential in the future, it is also true that IoT needs ecological energy sources that are compact, lightweight, and low cost. Now, thanks to the initiative HarveStore funded by Future and Emerging Technologies (FET), it looks like we might be able to power the Internet of Things in an environmental-friendly manner using harnessed heat and light. As a part of this initiative, experts are building μ-harvestorers, which are powerful and ecological devices in the size of a fingertip.

Can you imagine powering up #IoT devices autonomously?

The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is leading this creation. According to Federico Baiutti from IREC, “When it comes to powering new generation IoT devices, there exists an imbalance between what is needed and the technology which is currently available. Today, for unwired solutions, batteries are the most common energy source. But they are bulky, have limited capacity, and are not ecologically sustainable. Therefore, a breakthrough in micro-energy harvesting and storage technologies is required for the future IoT – and this is the focus of our project.”

As very clearly put by Baiutti, this creation might just be the biggest breakthrough in the world of the Internet of Things. These μ-harvestorers will make use of nano-enabled microtechnology, and all the devices will be made using silicon. Their compact and small size, long life, and reversibility will help in addressing all the current problems of power sources for batteries.

By harvesting as well as storing light and heat energy, it is expected that the IoT devices of the future will be made seamlessly sustainable and kind to the planet.

They have attempted and worked towards improving the optical performance, form factor, and comfort of new and innovative VR gadgets.

At the virtual SIGGRAPH conference this year, a team of researchers at Facebook is all set to present a more compact and lightweight optical architecture that promises enhanced performance to its users.

Source: Facebook Research

Lead researchers Junren Wang and Andrew Maimone have developed near-eye displays as a part of their work titled, “Holographic Optics for Thin and Lightweight Virtual Reality.” These displays boast of polarization-based optical folding and holographic optics. It is expected that this approach could potentially help in developing VR sunglasses in the future.

The best part about this new technique is that it allows the optics to be super thin while using the allocated space in the most efficient manner. Hence, Facebook anticipates comfortable and extremely lightweight form factors using which users can experience extended VR sessions with ease.

Source: Facebook Research

Facebook has also released a video showcasing its proof-of-concept research and design of these holographic optics. As is evident from the video, thin films are used as optics so that the resulting display thickness is less than 9 mm. This entire work is incredibly promising as it is expected to offer better visual performance to users within a large gamut of VR display colors.

The wide color gamut is the result of applying holographic optics to VR displays. This particular approach enables the reproduction of saturated and vivid colors for the ultimate viewing experience. In addition to that, the overall weight and size of a VR display are also significantly reduced by the combination of two techniques – polarization-based optical folding and holographic optics.

Source: Facebook Research

The future of virtual reality looks extremely promising as we can look forward to the development of high-performance, comfortable, and lightweight VR technology. Although this work by Facebook is completely research-oriented at present, the architecture and the approach presented in the technical paper look considerably practical to design high-performance VR devices in the near future.

It has permeated a lot of industries across the world in no time at all. We currently know virtual reality to provide us with amazing sensory experiences vis-à-vis sound and sight. Simply by putting on a headset and plugging in your earphones, you can experience VR at its best. To add to this sensory delight, a team of researchers from the University of Chicago has recently come up with an efficient way of delivering VR temperature sensations by hacking your nose.

Our noses house the trigeminal nerve that can be accessed using a series of chemicals. As a result, VR systems can make you feel cold and hot via the sensation of smell, even though you would not actually be smelling anything.

Source: ACM Digital Library

Jas Brooks, first author, shares, “The temperature sensation was largely localized to the face and definitely tied to breathing. I didn’t smell anything, but I felt an increasing sense of warmth as though my face was being warmed by sunlight for a while.” By triggering the receptors present in the trigeminal nerve, VR systems can allow users to feel a sensation of warmth on their faces, although they would not be able to detect any smell.

The researchers have also developed something called “pink smell,” which is akin to pink noise. Pink noise comes from white noise that aims to drown out all the other noises by way of producing static. Hence, white noise is completely random, whereas pink noise is balanced so that it sounds deeper than it really is. Pink smell, in effect, does the same thing for smells as pink noise for sounds. It uses balanced unidentifiable odors so that other odors can be drowned out.

As shared by Brooks, “It’s a confusing sensation, which is precisely what it is designed to achieve. You can immediately smell something, but it was hard for us (authors) to recognize what any odor was exactly because of the olfactory noise, even when we tried it with menthol.”

Brooks and the team are all set to present their work on June 30th in a free online symposium.

Using Augmented Reality, users can visualize precisely how much pollution surrounds them at a given point in time. The app is super interactive and helps spread awareness about the various types of pollutants as well as their impact on our health.

This AR mobile app is based on Android phones. You can easily download it from Google Play Store. That said, it works only on devices that support AR Core. Dr. Sridhar Chimalakonda, who is the Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the RISHA Lab of the institute, has led this research. Using the app, users can experience the air pollutants around them in real-time.

As shared by the institute, “We take the pollution data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and visualize various air pollutants present in the locality through GPS in the user’s surroundings. AiR also creates awareness in an interactive manner about the different pollutants, sources, and their impact on health. The app can be used to view air pollutants across 130 stations in India.”

Install App

This is a one-of-a-kind mobile application that aims to bring about awareness regarding environmental pollution so that users can then take steps to reduce the impact on the planet as well as their own health.

Dr. Chimalakonda further shares that the app collates data about pollution levels and pollutants from 130 stations across the country that are linked to CPCB. The institute also released an info-click on YouTube that helps users understand precisely how it can help in tracking pollution. The team responsible for the creation of this app also published a research paper on it with all their findings during the process of developing the app.

This is not the first mobile app that has been designed to measure air quality. Some other examples include Plume Air Report, AirVisual, Air Cognizer, and much more. However, the fact that it is based on augmented reality helps users experience their surroundings in a much more interactive, informative, engaging, and immersive manner.

Apple is now readying its proprietary version of smart glasses in the form of Apple Glasses. Apple has always been quite clear-sighted where its AR aspirations are concerned. In fact, the multinational conglomerate introduces new and improved AR tools on its iOS platform each year.

Since Apple declined to share details or comment regarding this new development and introduction in the field of AR, imaginations are running rife, and people are guessing the various features that these smart glasses from Apple are likely to come with.

For instance, it is predicted that much like the Apple Watch, the Apple Glasses will also not boast of any features that you cannot already enjoy in the smart glasses of other technological giants. Hence, if you are quite familiar with the landscape of augmented reality, there might not be many surprises for you on that front.

A leak suggests that Apple Glasses might be sold at the price tag of $499 and extra for prescription add-ons. The iPhone is, needless to say, the star product of Apple. It comes packed with advanced chips, capable of performing countless computer vision and AR computations. Therefore, it can easily power an AR headset, and only bigger and better things are expected in its future.

Reports suggest that Apple might introduce QR codes in its upcoming AR app of iOS 14. It is expected to launch a myriad of 3D experiences while scanning a QR code at a specific physical location. The brand-new Apple Glasses will, therefore, scan this code and then use it to offer quick AR experiences to users. It is also predicted that all Apple products might be used in tandem with each other, and users might be able to link them so that all their Apple devices may recognize each other.

Talking about the specifications of this upcoming product, it is expected that Apple Glasses will have a stereoscopic AR headset with dual displays and will process data with the help of iPhones. Leaks also suggest that the frames of these glasses might be made of metal, and they will have an integrated LiDAR sensor for scanning proprietary QR codes as well as gesture recognition. This sensor is expected to be placed at the temple of the glasses to serve their purpose. These new smart glasses from Apple might also have the capabilities of object tracking and 6DOF head-tracking using computer vision.

These smart glasses were expected to be launched at Apple’s Q1 2021 or Q4 2020 event sometime this year. However, its debut might be pushed to October 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic. This way, the company will be able to ensure a patented large-format deluge of all its product announcements.

Apple’s other wearable devices, such as AirPods and Apple Watch, are expected to be excellent accompaniments to the upcoming Apple Glasses. That said, the proof, as always, is in the pie.

On the other hand, Eco Arena is a mode where players can glide around on a field of zero gravity when they score goals. Both modes are equally interesting and fun.

For example, you might have to play tennis with a hockey stick and so on. There are many games with weird equipment to play. It may look absurd to some, but it is a lot of fun. Moreover, there is also an option to challenge other players or friends to interesting matches.

This game is not too intense, so you can use it for a warm-up workout or for cooling down after an intense workout. It is available on both Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest at the price of $29.99.

Irrespective of whether it is AR-inspired video games or the enhancement of our shopping experience using the technology, AR is slowly permeating all sectors of the digital ecosystem. Now, there is yet another practical use of augmented technology in the form of copy-pasting the real world.

Developer Cyril Diagne has created a video that showcases how AR can help in capturing visuals from your everyday life and pasting them into a variety of digital documents. Yes, you heard that right!

Using just your smartphone, you can copy real-life items and paste them online digitally. All you have to do is point your smartphone at the things that you wish to copy and then drag them to your PC. This new technology does not necessitate spending hours on Photoshop or emailing the final results to yourself.

Simply cut and paste whatever you want from your surroundings to a digital document seamlessly!

— Cyril Diagne (@cyrildiagne) May 3, 2020

As is evident, this brand-new application of AR is super practical and can prove to be quite useful in our day-to-day life. For instance, you will easily be able to see how a piece of furniture will look in a specific space or corner of your house.

Alternatively, you can see how makeup or a piece of clothing will look on you when you wear it. Simply put, rather than making digital things appear in the physical world you live in, this technology will necessarily bring your everyday physical world into the digital domain.

Diagne has also shared a cut and paste demo in the video, where he highlights some important features of this prototype. As shared by the developer, it will take the users 2.5 seconds approximately to copy an item and about 4 seconds after that to paste it. However, he believes that it is possible to enhance these speeds with more tests.

Although this development is in the prototype and research stages right now, several companies already seem to be working along similar lines.
