Recently another rogue ware called WiniFighter is making its attempt to misguide users to buy their full version. This software on installation, adds its own files into system and later on it detects those dummy files installed by itself as threats and requires users to buy a full version by paying $49.95.

Here are the removal instructions for WiniFighter:

1. Download and install free version of either Malwarebytes Anti Malware or Super Antispyware. You may use anyone if you have internet connectivity on the system where the rogue software is installed. Super Antispyware has offline definition updates so that it would work for offline computers too. Remember to update the program you just installed.

2. A restart may be required by the program. Its better to carry on a restart manually even if it does not ask for.

3. While booting the system, press F8 and choose Safe Mode to start Windows.

4. In Safe Mode, the startup programs are not loaded and it makes your job much easy. Now, open the anti malware program and perform a complete scan.

5. It detects a number of related files and registry entries for the rogue ware Winifighter.exe, remove all them.

6. It may require you a restart sometimes.

7. Open the quarantine list and if it is found on quarantine list, you may now remove them from that too to get your system completely free of WiniFighter.

CA antivirus detected few genuine Windows files as threats and moved them to quarantine. This raised a Windows warning to insert the installation disk in order to copy the changed system files.

There has been many discussions carried on CA security support forum and it has been cleared from the forum moderators that this is just a false positive and there is no need to panic. Though this issue has been a hot topic in their forums and all over the internet, there has been no update from CA on their blog, but somewhere on forum it is stated that the next update will carry a solution / fix for this problem.

The other widely detected amalum series viruses are: ZZNRA,ZZOAF,ZZNPB,ZZOKH, ZZNXU

If you are a CA AV user and got the warning, you may safely restore the files from quarantine with no infection on your system.

Some one and a half years back there were great rumors about the Google Operating System and I too had got a number of forward emails on the same with glazing screenshots. Later on it was clear that it was not Google OS, but Good OS. Good OS were quite intelligent in marketing that they represented it as gOS and the "g" had the same font as Google used.

Looking back about different Google products, lets start building our own image of this new Googly

Google Search Engine is always known for its simplicity. Google always cared for its simplicity, user friendliness and speed. Also Google has announced that the new OS will be faster than any available OS as Google says in its official blog -

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them.

So, they will be light fast. Dear Google, can you make a computer (currently a netbook as you say) work like a TV? Don’t you need the hardware to run the POST and boot the system? Its wonderful - go ahead.

Security: Google cares for our secure browsing - Google search engine is always perfect just except few cases. But what did you feel about orkut? Orkut has been attacked with number of malicious scripts and number of tools were developed to overuse the social network based on the bugs associated with the system. Number of scripts just flooded the scrapbooks and also user communities. Did you feel orkut was secure? These days, the popularity and usage of orkut has been reduced greatly and obviously we don’t see much attacks after Google has learnt all lessons.

Google goes ahead of all OS manufacturers and says -

The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.

Dear user, don’t you have internet? Don’t use our OS! To make their OS fast, they are making it minimal. Even today in developing countries like India, there are lot of users who don’t have an internet connection. If you are just using a computer for your day to day activities, Google’s fast and minimal interface may not be of your taste. May be you be ready to pay 5 minutes for Vista to load than using G-OS. If Google is planning for a graphic user version of free DOS with a chrome browser bundled, it would be a NO NO. We users need important basic features which we are addicted to use in Windows.

One more word from Google -

And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Does it anywhere sound that they don’t have an automatic update feature? I hope no! If one security hole is discovered, are they going to make a complete new version of OS and release it for us to download? If you can build a completely safe and secure OS, that’s great - I am very happy about that. But will you release any updates as to the changing trend of generation? I have definite doubt here because I have never seen my Google Talk prompting me to update for a newer version, nor it itself updated. If you want, better features, you have to use Google Talk Labs Edition. Is it the same here? Then lets go for Labs edition than the one you release for public.

They speak about security, but not about privacy. Google covers the major part of your online life. Even if you sneeze online, Google bots record it in their secure servers . What they did with Chrome? They added a tracker code, the same is expected to happen with their OS for sure. Lets wait for those who unchrome the OS too.

Coming to other main product for bloggers - Feed Burner. Feedburner was a great companion until it stayed away from the G - umbrella. Name me one blogger who has never had a problem with Google’s feedburner. Few complained and few did not, but feedburner had made our feed count as 0 many times for everyone.

Google, can you assure us that your new OS will be free from Ads? This is highly important for users as we don’t want to be annoyed while using our computer too!

Anyway, what I hope with this great project is that the traditional OS developers will take it seriously to make their OS work fast due to the competition.

What’s my opinion? Is it good? Definitely Yes, I wish Google a grand success.

A similar problem may occur on all Unix based systems on 19th of January, 2038 if they are not upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit. Here is a note about what happened in 2000 (Y2K) and what will happen in year 2038.

What is Y2K ? Why was it caused?

Computers during initial days were made to "think" in two digits for year while counting dates. They were done with intent of keeping the first 19 as constant and changing the last two digits like in 1998, 1999 etc. This was supposed to cause a major problem of resetting everything on some programmed computers as a result of overflow of date from 1999 to 1900. Anyway major nations took it seriously and developers succeeded to fix the problem which resulted in reducing losses on a major part.

What is Year 2038 Problem?

Now, its time for Unix for a Millenium Bug, it is also called as Unix Millenium Bug. This is caused due to the Unix time is computed on a binary format and the counting will be valid from 1970 to 2038. On January 19th 2038 at 03:14:37 this resetting will take place and lead the Unix systems to count the date from 1970. This can be fixed by Unix vendors when they switch from 32 bit to 64 bit versions. Thought it is a long time ahead, it could cause a problem for programs which work for very future dates.

Here is how the date gets reset on year 2038.

Note that the image contains an error that the counting will reset to 1901 which is not the same as in the explanation. One more confusion is the time region that wikipedia says as UTC. Do you think the time zone would matter for any system to reset? I think its that time in any region the computer is set for.

Why to change proxy on firefox for browsing?

There are many reasons why we use proxy - main reason being when websites are blocked. Using an anonymizer service is very easy compared with this way. Still I find one particular reason why we should use this kind of proxy configuration on browser. This provides same functionality of anonymizer to access blocked websites, but there is one difference between them - such services modify the originality of every link on the website. Any blogger / webmaster using advertisements would like to analyze the ad behavior on their sites. I have seen some ad networks foul play with users by putting popups and popunders for the locations which does not come under the users’ location (I have seen that once in the past). And many networks monitor the url on which the ads are placed. If I apply for techpavan.com then some companies won’t serve ads if I put my ads on any other domain - also not on google translate, cache etc.

How to configure proxy on firefox?

Its quite a simple step. Search for free proxy list on Google and pick out a working proxy in the location you desire. Take care that you pick up an anonymous or high anonymous proxy - not the transparent one.

1. On firefox, open Tools > Options > Advanced > Network

2. Under Network - Connection > Click Settings

3. Click Manual proxy configuration - enter the proxy server address you obtained from the first step.

Note 1: This way you can browse any website even if your ISP blocks that website without requiring to visit any proxy web service.

Note 2: Proxy servers used here do fail after some time and its required to change it to working one every time you use.
