However, there is no straightforward way to stop or turn off the automatic updates in Windows 11. So if you want to prevent your Windows 11 from getting updated, you might prefer to use a third-party tool.

Windows 11/10 offers less control over the updating behavior of the operating system than previous versions of Windows. You can not permanently turn off Windows Updates using the Control Panel or Settings app in Windows 11/10. Once you are connected to the internet, it checks for updates periodically and automatically installs if they find any, whether you like it or not. To open it, first press the Windows + R keys from the keyboard to access the Run dialog box. In the Run box, type regedit and then hit Enter from the keyboard.

Step 2. In the Registry Editor window that opens, navigate to the following key from the left side pane:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Step 3. Then perform a right-click on the “Windows” folder, select the New > Key options from the context menu. Name the newly created key as WindowsUpdate. If on your Windows PC, this key already exists, you can skip this step.

Step 4. Now, right-click on the “WindowsUpdate” key and then select the New > Key option. Name the newly created key as AU . You can skip this step also if the AU folder already exists under “WindowsUpdate.”

Step 5. Now select the AU folder by clicking on it, and on the right side pane, right-click on free space and select New and then DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Name it to NoAutoUpdate.

Step 6. Now double-click on “NoAutoUpdate” DWORD on the right side pane and change its value from “0” to “1.”

Step 7. Click OK .

Step 8. Reboot your PC.

Once you execute the above steps, the automatic Windows update process is disabled on your computer. However, you can always check updates manually from the Settings > Windows Update.

In the future, if you wish to continue with automatic update of Windows 11, open the registry editor and then navigate to the following key:-

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

Now, double-click on the NoAutoUpdate on the right side pane of the “AU” folder and set its “Value data” to “0.” That’s it. Windows automatic update is enabled on your computer.

Microsoft uses the Windows Update service to check for updates and then download & install if new updates are available to your Windows operating system. If you disable this service, Windows will stop checking for the latest updates. Enabling this service will invoke automatic updates on your PC.

Step 1. Call the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key from the keyboard.

Step 2. In the Run box that opens, type services.msc and then hit Enter from the keyboard or click the OK button.

Step 3. In the “Services” window that appears after doing the above steps, find Windows Update from the list of services. Now, please double-click on it to open its Properties dialog box.

Step 4. On the “Windows Update Properties” dialog box, select Disabled from the “Startup type” drop-down menu.

Step 5. Click Apply/OK.

After performing the above steps, Windows Update is disabled on your PC. If you would like to start it again, repeat the above steps, and in step 4, select the Automatic option from the “Startup type” drop-down menu. Then click Apply/OK.

How to Allow or Disallow Automatic Windows Update through Group Policy?

Using Group Policy on Windows 11, you can permanently disable the Windows update service.

Step 1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.

To do that, first launch the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R keys from the keyboard. Now type gpedit.msc in the Run box and then hit Enter from the keyboard.

Step 2. Navigate to the following path under the Local Group Policy Editor window:-

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage end user experience

Step 3. On the right side of the “Manage end user experience” folder, double-click on the policy name Configure Automatic Updates.

Step 4. Select the Disabled option.

Step 5. Click Apply.

Step 6. Click OK.

Step 7. Reboot your computer.

Now, you have completely turned off Windows automatic updates. If you wish to start it, repeat the above steps, and in step 4, select the Not Configured option.

How to Customize your Windows 10 as Windows 11

Today, Microsoft is allowing adventurous users (like yourself) to download and install Windows 11 for free. Here’s how.

As you’re probably aware, Windows 11 is scheduled to launch in the fall or early next year, with official teasers and product listings suggesting October 2021 release date. Ahead of the wider rollout, Microsoft has now released a beta build of Windows 11 that is expected to be buggy and probably crash-prone.

It’s not advisable to download Windows 11 pre-release software on your work machine or if you use the device daily for important work. This is because there are rough edges in the first build and Microsoft is aware of several known issues, including a bug where Windows Search may not work properly.

Windows 11 preview build hardware requirements

Before joining the Windows Insider Program, you need to understand the new system requirements for beta testers. This is important because requirements are different for existing and new testers/Windows installations.

If you are already running preview builds for the past few months, you’ll be allowed to install preview builds even if your desktop does not meet the minimum hardware requirements, which includes CPU and TPM 2.0 requirements. The restrictions are lifted only if you’ve been installing builds from the Dev Channel through June 24, 2021.

If you want to download Windows 11 test build on a new device or virtual machine, and your device does not meet the CPU requirements, the installation will be blocked. The company is moving unsupported new devices to the Release Preview Channel where they can continue testing Windows 10 builds.

Install Windows 11 preview on your PC

To download and install Windows 11 on your PC, use these steps:

Signup for the Windows Insider program from the company’s website or Windows Settings. You’ll need to agree to special terms and condition, which warns you about the potential issues in the beta testing program.

Size: You need nearly 2GB of data if you’re installing it on an existing Windows 10 Dev Channel. Under any condition, the download size shouldn’t be more than 3GB.
Compatibility: If you’re planning to install the beta builds on officially unsupported PCs, you’ll need to roll back to Windows 10 when the new operating system is generally available.
Direct installation: You can install the new operating system directly from Windows 10 and you don’t need to download any tools from Microsoft. The ISO file is currently not available, so the new Windows can be installed via Windows Update only.
Issues: The first build is buggy and there are several known issues.

Known issues in Windows 11

As mentioned at the outset, there are several known issues in the first build of new Windows

Taskbar: Some features are deprecated. For example, Windows Timeline is gone and taskbar location cannot be changed. A bug prevents the taskbar from working on multiple monitors and the preview window may not work on the taskbar in some installations.
Windows Settings: The new Settings can crash, but it can be fixed by restarting the PC. Similarly, some Settings legacy pages are still present and the ‘Power mode’ feature does not show up. Another bug results in a green flash when launching the Settings app.
Start menu: You may not be able to enter text in Windows Search or Start. Another bug could prevent users from removing apps from the Start.
Windows Search: Icons may not load in preview and the search panel may not open if you click on the search icon. Recent searches may not be displayed and the search panel might appear as black.
Windows widgets: Quality issues, text scaling doesn’t work properly, and launching links from the widgets may not open apps like Weather.
Microsoft Store: Install button, rating and reviews section is not functional in some installations.

Microsoft Teams and Android apps integration will be enabled in a future release.

Rolling back to Windows 10

Here’s one important reminder: You can’t go back to Windows 10 easily.
You won’t be able to use “Reset this PC” or “Recovery” options to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10. Recovery partition will no longer be able to restore your device to the version of Windows you had before. If you want to go back, you’ll need to reinstall Windows 10 version 21H1 using Media Creation Tool or Windows 10 ISO.

If you roll back to Windows 10 and your device is unsupported, you will not be given another favour from Microsoft. That means you cannot upgrade to Windows 11 Insider Preview builds again on unsupported devices.
That’s because clean installation of Windows is treated as a new PC and the minimum hardware requirements will be enforced again.

If there’s one complaint you can expect to hear when a new version of Windows rolls out, it’s “What did they do to the Start Menu?” If you just want the start menu in Windows 10 to look and function the way the Windows 7 Start Menu did, we’re here to help.

Why Do I Want To Do This?

Maybe you love the Windows 10 Start Menu, which is essentially an extension and revision of the Windows 8 Start Menu. Perhaps the tile-based Metro UI system doesn’t irritate you and you don’t have a problem with the removal of the traditional Start Menu styling. If so this tutorial certainly isn’t for you and it’s great that the new layout doesn’t bother you or fill you fits of nostalgia for the GUIs of yesteryear.

Not everyone (and we’ll include ourselves in that group), however, is such a fan of the new Start Menu system. Some people learned how to wrestle with the Start Menu back in Windows 8 and they’ll take that experience with them to Windows 10. Most people skipped Windows 8 altogether though and the massive rollout of Windows 10 is going to send them slamming headlong into a totally new Start Menu paradigm that doesn’t suit their workstyle or sensibilities about what a Start Menu should be in the first place. If you’re among those new Windows 10 users that want nothing to do with the new menu, we’re here to help sort things out.
Now, before we proceed, we do want to make it clear that just because we’re not huge fans of what Microsoft has done with the Windows 10 Start Menu (and the Windows 8 menu before that) doesn’t mean we’re outright negative toward Windows 10 in general. We’ve installed Windows 10 on everything from desktop PCs to our aging ultrabook laptop and have been rather impressed with the improvements found therein (that old ultrabook hasn’t run so snappy since, well, ever).

What Do I Need?

Thankfully we won’t be doing any mucking about in the registry, there’s no hand-editing of any variables or values, and you won’t have to make any sacrifices to ensure the process works smoothly.
The only thing we need, besides your Windows 10 installation, is a very handy little program known as Classic Shell. The Classic Shell program includes both an overhaul to the Start Menu system that allows you to switch out the Windows 8/Windows 10 system for the classic single column Start Menu that harkens all the way back to Windows XP, a two-column arrangement, and the Windows 7 style.
In addition to adjusting the Start Menu, the focus of our tutorial today, the Classic Shell system includes not only the Classic Start Menu but Classic Explorer (a package of tweaks and adjustments for the Windows Explorer experience). So far we haven’t felt much compulsion to dig into changing the way Windows 10 handles Windows Explorer but the tweaks are there if you’d like to dig into them.
You can download Classic Shell at the project homepage here. As of the publication of this article we recommend using the beta release as it will have the most current adjustments for Windows 10. Once Windows 10 has been officially released for awhile the changes will be less frequent and the beta adjustments in the program will be folded into the stable release.
Update: Classic Shell is no longer being developed, but volunteers are now maintaining the program under the name Open Shell. You’ll probably want to try that instead.
Before we jump into the actual process though, we’d like to take a minute to encourage you to donate a few buck to the Classic Shell project if you find the Classic Shell useful. The program has been chugging along for years (since 2009), it’s free, and it’s maintained and curated by a single guy. It’s a lot easier to keep maintaining and updating a long running project when enough of your users care enough to help keep the lights turned on.

Installing and Configuring Classic Shell

Download the installation executable from the project homepage, linked in the previous section, and run it. While you can opt to not install individual elements (like the Classic Explorer components) they aren’t activated until you turn them on so there is little harm in installing the entire package in one swoop.
Once the installation is complete, you begin the Start Menu configuration process by, intuitively, clicking on the Start Button on the toolbar. The following menu will pop up.

Here you can opt to adopt the Classic, Classic with two columns, or Windows 7 style menu. As the goal of this tutorial is to recreate the Windows 7 style, we’ll leave it as the default. We’ll return to this menu in a moment, but for now simply confirm you have Windows 7 selected and click OK.

Now let’s open up the Start Menu by clicking on the Start Button again.

We kept the screenshot above to the exact same scale as the Windows 10 Start Menu screenshot in the introduction of article. Not only is the Start Menu nice and compact but the Classic Shell team has thoughtfully included a Metro-themed skin (that sets as the default at that). We get exactly the same layout and comfortable familiarity of the Windows 7 menu but in a nice theme that meshes with the other UI tweaks in Windows 10.

And, super convenient, we didn’t lose the Windows 10 Start Menu at all. If you need anything in the Windows 10 menu that isn’t in the Classic Shell menu (or you’re having trouble locating it at any rate) all you need to do is click on the entry at the very top of the Windows 7 Classic Shell menu labeled “Start Menu (Windows)” as seen in the screenshot above and it kicks you immediately (and temporarily) into the true Windows 10 Start Menu. The next time you click the Start Button, however, you’ll be right back in the Windows 7 style menu without a hitch.

Tweaking The Classic Menu

Many people will be thrilled with just the default settings (the Windows 7 style menu + the Metro theme). If you’d like to do some further tweaking you can simply right click on the Start Button and access the Classic Start Menu settings via the “Settings” option as seen below.

That selection will send you right back to the menu we saw when we first ran Classic Start Menu and you can make adjustments like switching to the “Classic with two columns” setup. By digging further into the additional tabs you’ll find a huge number of tweaks and settings you can play with.

In addition to switching the column-style of the menu you can also swap out the actual Start Menu button icon itself if you’re so inclined. You can do so by checking “Replace Start button” at the bottom of the default “Start Menu Style” tab. Select from Aero, Classic, or supply a custom image.

Don’t worry, you’re not on the hook for designing your own custom image/animation, there are thousands of people online that have shared their creations. You can find new Start Menu buttons simply by searching in Google for “Classic Start Menu buttons” and then some descriptor like “Windows 10” if you’re looking for buttons with a Windows 10 theme.

Under the “Basic Settings” tab you can adjust Start Menu related functions like what happens when you press the Windows key or combinations thereof. You can also adjust how the Programs Menu opens on the Start Menu, swap the shutdown button default (we always switch ours to Hibernate so we don’t accidently shut our PCs down), and tweak the on-menu search box.

Under the “Skin” tab you can swap out the skin on your Classic Shell Menu from the default Metro theme to other themes like Windows Aero. We’ll be honest though, while we really like the Windows 7 style menu once you’ve seen the clean UI update to Windows 10 (ugly Start Menu aside) you probably won’t want to go back to the now-fairly-dated-looking Aero look. The Areo theme, in our opinion, just looks out of place among all the other GUI improvements.

First things first, the most efficient way to call up the Run command dialog box is to use this keyboard shortcut combination: Windows key + R.

It is common for modern PC keyboards to have a key in the bottom row next to the Left-Alt key marked with the Windows logo--that is the Windows key.

You can also open the Run command by right-clicking the Start Menu button, and selecting the Run command from the item list. But that is less efficient and defeats the purpose of quick navigation in Windows 10.

When you open the Run command, you will be presented with a simple entry box (Image below). You will enter your commands into the box, and press Enter or click OK to execute them.

Thankfully, you can make the change less jarring by using free software to bring back the look of the operating system you know and love. All of these tips are easy to try, and can make Windows 10 far easier to get to grips with.

Microsoft tried getting rid of the Start menu altogether in Windows 8, replacing it with a colorful screen of rectangular tiles much like your phone's app selector. The Start Menu returned in Windows 10, to the relief of many, but it still looks quite different to the one you know and love from Windows 7.

Thankfully, you restore the menu to its former glory using a free tool called Open-Shell-Menu (formerly known as Classic Shell). To try it, download the latest release and run through the installer as directed. There are no potentially unwanted programs to worry about.

Launch the program, click the 'Start menu style' tab and select 'Windows 7 Style'. Click 'OK', then open the Start menu to see the change.

You can also right-click on the taskbar and uncheck 'Show task view' and 'Show Cortana button' to hide two tools that weren't present in Windows 7. You can also change the 'Search' option to 'Hidden' (the Search bar will still appear in the Start menu).

3. Get the Start button

Open-Shell-Menu doesn't include the classic Windows 7 start button, but you can download a copy from the old Classic Shell forums. Download the file BtartButtons.zip from the top post and extract the contents somewhere convenient.

In Open-Shell-Menu, select the 'Start button' tab and check 'Replace Start button'. Click 'Custom button' then select 'Button image' and browse to the location where you saved the icons and experiment with the different options to find one you like.

4. Recreate the Aero theme

One of Windows 7's most attractive features was its Aero Glass theme, which gave windows and toolbars a soft, translucent appearance. Yes, it was more resource-intensive that Windows 10's plain design, but it looked great and modern PCs should have no trouble handing the effect.

Open-Shell-Menu can help recreate this look for the Start menu. Select the 'Skin' tab and choose 'Windows Aero' from the drop-down list to apply the effect.

For the Taskbar and other windows, a little program called Glass2K can help. Download and run the software, and use the slider at the bottom of the window to adjust the transparency of the Taskbar. You can also right-click on any window to change its opacity, but bear in mind that this will affect the entire window, not just its title bar.

5. Restore the startup sound

This final tip is far from essential, but it's fun. Download the cheery Windows 7 startup sound as an MP3 (the different download options are on the right) then use Online Audio Converter to convert it to WAV format.

Now type 'regedit' into Windows 10's search box to open the Registry Editor. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > AppEvents > EventLabels > WindowsLogon. Double-click 'ExcludeFromCPL' and change the value data from '1' to '0'. Close the Registry Editor.

Search for 'Sound' to open Windows' audio options, and select 'Sound control panel' from the right-hand side. Click the 'Sounds' tab and check the box marked 'Play Windows start-up sound'. Select 'Windows log on' from the list of sounds above, then click 'Browse' and navigate to the Windows 7 startup sound you downloaded.

Click 'Test' to check that it works and click 'Apply', then restart your PC and bask in the nostalgia.
