1) Adjust the Date and FiltrRank sliders

The two sliders at the top of the article pane are designed to help you restrict your view and see just the relevant information. They work great and any changes are shown immediately but be careful because being too restrictive can leave you with no articles in your view.

2) Select or de-select sources to help control the noise. The more sources you selected the more articles we will find. Twitter and Friendfeed can be controlled at either the global or filtr level. They can both be a bit noisy so include them at your discretion. Sources can be de-selected by clicking on each radio button to uncheck.

3) Selecting Filtrs - Make sure you have only the filtr topics you wish to view enabled by selecting their radio buttons. In this example I will see only the articles for Red Sox, Mac and money.

4) In the case of too few articles, you may have overly restrictive search terms. Remember the system is designed to persistently search for the key word or words in your filtr. In the example below I will only see articles that include all 5 terms biology, marine, whales, dolphins and plankton. To be more general you could replace the ANDs with ORs in which case you would get articles that have (biology and marine) or (biology and whales) or (biology and dolphins) or (biology and plankton).

5) Filtrbox is still searching for new articles. Unlike web search engines Filtrbox performs persistent search. This means that Filtrbox will continually search for articles that contain your Filtr until you modify or delete it. Our searches may take a little time to search the far ends of the internet and start bringing results back to you.

If you have tried these adjustments and you are still not seeing the results you think you should, give us a shout at support@filtrbox.com.

The truth is, while we would have loved to have the app available today, we decided not to release it just yet. Here is why:

We don’t have a 3G iPhone to test on yet. More specifically, we’d like to see how well the GPS in the new phones works.

We don’t want to release something that’s not rock-solid. And by rock-solid, we don’t mean crashing, but rock-solid from a usability standpoint. The app should be as easy to use as possible. We have some very ambitious goals concerning the user interface, but getting it just right takes time and we’re just not quite there yet.

Of course, this doesn’t make you any less anxious to try our app. So when is it coming out? While we don’t have an exact release date, we’ll commit to having it available by the end of the month. Thanks for being patient, and we think you’re really going to like what the app has to offer.

New services:

Brightkite - A really awesome service where you share your location with your friends. Our integration means that you’ll be able to see what your friends are posting, where they’re checking in, and the notes they’re writing. Soon you’ll be able to post to Brightkite, as well as post comments on items.

Plurk - All the rage with the Twitterati, Plurk is a service that adds a few new flavors to the microblogging genre. Horizontal timeline scrolling, emotions, etc. are just a few of the niceties about it. As soon as Plurk offers an API, we’ll be able to post new Plurk messages back and view friends Plurks. Until then, we hope you at least enjoy publishing your Plurk status in your personal profile!

Seesmic - With a CEO like Loic LeMeur how could your service not be the bees knees? Seesmic is like Twitter, but for video…post a short video and create a conversation around it! Seesmic’s integration means that we can show you all of your friends’ stuff (even their private replies) and publish your own videos on your profile too. You can even reply to other videos right within their player!

Guitar Hero - Alright, I’ve been excited about this one forever. It’s easy…just integrate your console (XBOX360, PS3 or Wii) into the Guitar Hero site, then tell us your User ID and we’ll publish how well you’ve been doing lately on your tunes. Stats include star rating, percentage, oh, and what song you played in the first place. This has been a lot of fun to test internally (IE …just playing a lot of Guitar Hero under the guise of work).

New features:

We’ve added a few new keyboard shortcuts:
M - Me (your profile)
J - Previous tab
K - Next tab
C - Close current tab

There’s a new indication whenever you’re looking at new items versus stuff you may have seen before. Basically we add a yellow background color to “new” stuff. But this is a work in progress…meaning please tell us if you don’t like it…and give us a better idea!

We’ve changed around the Services page just a bit. We’ve now added icons indicating what kinds of things we do with the various accounts you’re adding. If you see then that means we’ll probably be bringing in YOUR activities. If you see then we’ve got your friends’ updates and last, means that you’re going to be able to post stuff to that service. In addition to this, we’re also clarifying any time that we’re needing to ask for your password. Definitely not something we want to do, but it’s a necessary thing for some parts of our app to work.

We really hope you like all the new additions, and very soon we’ll be adding all kinds of new stuff…new services, features, etc!

Close Comments On Posts
Let’s face it sometimes debates just get too intense. Honestly, it’s a health risk – blood pressures start rising, heart rates elevate…look we don’t need anyone keeling over from a heart attack. We don’t want to have to put a disclaimer on IntenseDebate that you should have Bayer Aspirin on hand when using our product. We’re concerned about your health. IntenseDebate cares.

So we thought it would be a good idea to take some preventative measures and give blog publishers the ability to close comments on posts. This feature can be accessed in your IntenseDebate comments on your blog post under the “Admin Options” tab.

Commenter Account Stipulations
In staying with the theme of keepin’ it real, blog publishers can now set commenter account stipulations. That’s just fancy talk for saying that you can opt to require all of your commenters to create IntenseDebate accounts in order to comment on your posts. Now you can choose whether or not you want to allow anonymous comments on your posts. If you’ve had issues with spammers or repeat anonymous comment offenders, you can require them to create an account and keep the debate real. This feature is available in your blog settings page at IntenseDebate.com (login, select the tab named after your blog, followed by the “Settings” sub-tab).

As always, we’d love your feedback.

Word out,

We’re pretty excited over here at the EventVue headquarters to announce that EventVue will be powering the Mashable SummerMash tour. We’re big fans of Mashable and Pete and are pumped about working with them.

The EventVue communities will help people who attend the SummerMash events all across the country to connect with the other attendees. We’ve been to a Mashable event before and remember how important it was to us to meet some of the other people attending. As of today, we’re joining with Mashable to make this easier.

We’re also launching some brand new functionality for the SummerMash tour. As we announced earlier, we’ve built some really cool tools that help you keep up with the conversation at conferences. We’re particularly excited about the Twitter functionality — SummerMash attendees will now be able to follow one twitter stream to see all the tweets from all the attendees at the SummerMash events. So let’s all cross our fingers and hope Twitter will work (yeah, it’s risky) so we can deliver the next step in helping attendees connect at conferences.

We’re launching three of the communities today; the SummerMash Seattle, SummerMash Los Angeles, and SummerMash San Francisco. If you’re attending any of these, log in to the EventVue community and get started. You can follow along on Twitter at @seattlemash, @lamash, and @sanfranmash. You’ll want to register to attend these events at if you’re in one of the three cities. Always remember: Don’t Mash Alone!

Here’s what they do in a nutshell:

We push activity to them, and instead of us getting bombarded with requests from social aggregation services every few seconds (SocialThing, FriendFeed, etc.), we can point them to Gnip and let them deal with it. The big upsides for aggregation services: no rate-limiting, and a uniform way to know when new data is available.

This email is the birth of TechStars. To give you a little context, Boomtown Enterprises was the name of a small investment fund that David and I operated at the time. I edited the original email very lightly to fix one typo and in one case to protect the identity of the innocent.

Subject: boomtown

I’m just thinking this can be one of the boomtown businesses.

Providing seed capital to startups with only an idea.

The concept:
1) We take applications on the web site. Only seed stage companies need apply (those with passionate people and an idea, but no way to get going or who are not sure they can do it on their own – maybe just need a kick in the ass and someone to believe in them)

2) We fly or drive to interview the ones that sound good (perhaps organizing small tours), or have them come here on our dime.

3) We offer the promising ones $10k for a 2% non-controlling, non-board seat interest of their company. They have to come to Boulder for 2-3 months to start the company up.
a. They can work in our offices, or in a hotel, or wherever they want. We provide internet connections, a little office space, etc.
b. They can use the 10k however they want.
c. We have the option to buy 2% more of the company for another 10k at the end of the 2-3 month period.
d. We provide free consulting while they’re here including product feedback, how-to advice, etc.
e. We organize weekly (or bi-weekly) dinners with investors, IP lawyers, tech experts, etc (basically using our contacts to get people to donate a little time).

4) Based on how they do while they’re here, we decide if we want to invest more or not when they leave. This should be easy, since you’re really evaluating the people as much as the product (do they work all hours, do they have passion, etc)

5) If they want, they can stay in Boulder and grow their company here, working within our office space (renting it). Perhaps we have some kind of “space, connectivity + consulting” lease rate.

The only drawback I can think of is that we’d probably need to get a slightly nicer office to really attract companies. We’d have to look successful, and have an environment with couches, whiteboards, etc for them to work in optionally. But we could grow that over time once we get a few and have a good feeling that it’s working.

I am thinking I’ll start working on the web site. Are you cool with putting this kind of info/offer up on the boomtown site? We don’t have to actually do it, I suppose, but we can at least start taking applications and see what’s what. Maybe generate a little word of mouth somehow, and who knows. We can start with a summer program this year. Sublet or rent some open office space from this place for just 3 months or something. Start trying to spread the word a little bit on college campuses, especially CU, CSU, DU, etc.

Thoughts? I think it sounds really cool. Yeah, we have no idea what we’re doing.

So that’s how we came up with this crazy idea just 868 days ago. I remember putting up the basic web site later that same day. Obviously, it has evolved since then. Now we have some sense of what we’re doing, for example. We didn’t launch TechStars that summer - it just wasn’t enough time to raise the necessary funding and morph the idea into what would ultimately make it successful - being mentorship driven. But we got there the next summer, and we’ve been learning and evolving ever since.

HTML Parsing
We’re proud to answer the call and release HTML support in IntenseDebate comments. If you’ve got the urge to add a little self-expression, feel free to add some bold or italic characters. You can also customize your links and add some photos to your comments. You can allow your readers to add images to their comments by enabling this option in your Blog Settings page (login into IntenseDebate.com, select the tab named after your blog followed by the “Settings” sub-tab). The option is located on the right side of the page under the heading “Display Settings.” Image tags are disabled by default. IntenseDebate supports the following HTML tags - <a>, <b>, <i>, <u>, <em>, <p>, <blockquote>, <br>, <strong>, <strike>, <img>.

Popular Blog Posts Widget
We released a new widget that displays the most popular blog posts on your blog (as determined by the number of comments made per post). By displaying this widget on your home page, you’ll be able to breath new life into your past blog posts and drive some fresh traffic their way. This widget is the next step in bringing your content into the light (check out our past progress here & here). This widget can be found on our Add-on’s page along with our other kick-ass widgets (Blog Stats, Recent Comments, My Recent Comments, and Top Commenters).

New Usernames & Profile URL’s
After much deliberation, we’ve decided to take the plunge and update our approach to usernames and profile URL’s. Before we get any further into this, this does not have anything to do with your Display Name - your Display Name has not changed.

Basically we’ve changed your username from an account ID number to a friendlier name. Integrating your IntenseDebate account with other 3rd party services like FriendFeed will be a bit easier now. For those of you that have enabled IntenseDebate’s FriendFeed Comment Retrieval you might recall having to enter your IntenseDebate profile URL that consisted of an ugly user account ID number. Your profile URL is a little prettier and looks a little something like this: http://intensedebate.com/people/michael.

If you are using our IntenseDebate FriendFeed Comment Retrieval, you do not need to update your IntenseDebate profile URL in your FriendFeed account. You’re all set.

Here’s the skinny on the new usernames. Your username has automatically been updated. Please note that any incompatible characters were removed from your username. In addition, numbers from your IntenseDebate account ID may have been added to your username in the event that there were duplicate usernames. Again, this will not affect your IntenseDebate Display Name.

We wanted to let you know about this in case you want to set your username and profile URL to something that fits your style so you can remember it more easily. To update your username please edit your IntenseDebate user profile. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it will be worth it in the long run!

As always, please feel free to drop us a line with any questions or feedback.

Sincerely,
The fellas at IntenseDebate

We spent this entire week doing a whole bunch of optimizations and tweaks on our back end so that the platform is more stable and works quicker. We’ll be continuing to do optimizations in the coming weeks to be able to deliver updates faster, etc.

But since we’re committed to bringing you all kinds of new updates, we threw in something that makes Socialthing! work just a bit more like a desktop app: Keyboard Shortcuts.

It’s pretty simple…the idea was that you can navigate through Socialthing! without your mouse…or at least navigate a good amount of it. Basically when you have ST! open, you just hit the corresponding key on your keyboard. So without further adieu, here they are:

H - Home
P - Post
S - Settings
V - Vote

If our auto-update notification pops up to tell you that you have new updates from some networks, you can hit “E” and that will activate the “See them”

If you have the Post window open (like if you clicked on it, or hit P to bring it open), you can hit ESC and it will close that window. (NOTE: This feature doesn’t work in Safari if you’re typing something in the text box, if you want to close, type Tab then ESC)

Also, when you have the post window open, you’re able to use Tab to go straight to the “Post” button, so that you can click Tab then Enter after you’re done typing, and post something right up. If you want to select or deselect any networks that you’re posting to, you can just keep hitting Tab, then Space to check/uncheck the boxes. (NOTE: If you’re trying to do this in Safari on the Mac, you’ll need to go to System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts and then at the bottom, make sure “All Controls” is selected).

We’ve got a few more keyboard shortcuts that we’ll be adding in next week, along with some very exciting features, so stay tuned!

We’ve also added a basic way to search posts. Watch for improvements around this feature in the coming months.

We hope you enjoy the improvements
We’re really thrilled about these improvements especially the inline comments. We hope you find these changes as useful as we do. Thanks again for your continued support! Keep watch over the next few weeks for our developer API and native iPhone app.

We are quite busy over here these days, but I still want to be participating in the key conversations online that have to do with information overload and noise control. Ironically I was prepping for an important call and running thru my Filtrbox account when this article from ReadWriteWeb caught my eye in the dashboard (high ranking, from today). I clicked on the article and then left it up in a tab since I had the call in a few minutes. I came back an hour later and posted a comment. Then one of our users posted a comment giving us a nice plug. Thanks Danny!

The whole discovery-reading-commenting process took me less time than its taking to write this post, and I was able to 1. engage in the conversation about information overload and 2. inadvertently get an independent endorsement for Filtrbox out of it. I would have never gotten to this article if my only mechanism was to subscribe to the RRW RSS feed, because I’d already be thousands of articles behind…I don’t have time to manually search for information overload every day, and I don’t want to comment EVERYWHERE - just on the blogs that have high viewership (and high FiltrRank scores). This is a good example of noise-control at work - I didn’t miss the important post and was able to comment quickly, but I did not have to manually sift through hundreds of articles to find it.

Here’s the article (comments are at the bottom of the post) from ReadWriteWeb on Information Overload. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/info_overload_what_can_we_do.php#comment-58274

The first week of TechStars was a complete whirlwind (lots of new people to meet, presentations from a bunch of big tech vendors, learning the lay of the land in Boulder, etc). Now the teams have caught their collective breath and are starting to realize just how quickly the summer rolls by when you’re creating and building a business.

While it’s fun to run and gun during the early stages of business formation, I’ve always been insistent that the teams that I work closely with map out their work for the summer early on. It’s not something that’s set in stone but is a good guide of where we think we can get to in a 12 week period. These roadmaps get modified on a regular basis throughout the summer but the overall framework generally remains the same (in part because each team is striving to make discernable and demonstrative progress by the final “pitch” day at the end of the program).

I’ve been around plenty of start-up businesses. Some have been more methodical than others at planning out where they were going and what they were doing; at collecting data early on in their dev process from prospective users and working that into their product thoughts; at working their dev cycles to allow key issues to be surfaced earlier rather than later; at thinking through scale before their first users hit their system; etc. Others, not so much. I bet you can guess which ones have the higher success rate…

Kudos to Jon and Austin on this week’s feature release. We’re really stoked to announce our improved FriendFeed support. At IntenseDebate we strive to keep your content on your blog. As your content gets more and more fragmented across other 3rd party services, our goal is to bring your blog content back to you. With this in mind, we’re really pleased to roll out our latest FriendFeed integration, FriendFeed Comment Retrieval. Now when comments are made in the context of your blog on FriendFeed, IntenseDebate will republish them back on your blog! All you need to do is enter in your FriendFeed URL and select the option in your IntenseDebate profile.

Please keep in mind that this is the first step and there is one immediate limitation - FriendFeed does not support threaded comments which prevents comments made in FriendFeed from being threaded on your blog. Also, comments made in FriendFeed that are posted in IntenseDebate are tied to your FriendFeed account instead of your IntenseDebate account. We’re continuing to make this as seamless as possible and are hoping to have these comments tied to your IntenseDebate account.

Enhanced Gravatar Support
Last week we introduced our Gravatar support and last night we rolled out an improvement that we’re calling Auto-Grab Gravatar support. Now we will automatically upload your Gravatar (if you use the service). Just one less step in pimping your IntenseDebate profile. You can choose to use your Gravatar or upload a different profile pic.

Optional Profanity Filter
We’ve also added an optional profanity filter for blog publishers. Words entered on your profanity list will be replaced with “****.” This option can be enabled in your “Settings” page (select the tab named after your blog followed by the “Settings” sub-tab). Please note that we have not populated the profanity filter - certain words are obvious (shit, fuck, etc.), but we didn’t want to make a decision on the borderline words (ass, asshole, etc.). So we leave it up to you. Love to hear your thoughts about these borderline words, please leave us a fucking comment.

Email Notification Update
An update on our top priority, stabilizing our email notifications. Currently we’ve put a band-aid on it and have we’ve been sending and receiving email notifications consistently. We are switching our outbound mail system to prevent any future email glitches. If you find that you are still not receiving emails, please contact us at support@intensedebate.com. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we get this all sorted out.

The centerpiece of our update today is expanded support for making Socialthing! into a Fluid App. Making ST! more compatible with some of the advanced features of Fluid means that we’re able to make it feel even more like a desktop app. (Oh, and if you need an icon for your ST! Fluid app, check out our blog post.)

First off, we added support for “dock badges” which means that whenever new updates come in (since we’re auto-refreshing now), we notify you on the dock. See example below:

We also built in support for Growl, the Mac OS X system-wide notification system that shows pop-ups whenever stuff happens. We’ve made it so that if you have your Socialthing! Fluid app open, when we auto-update, we tell you how many new updates are there, as well as what services they’re coming from. We’ve been testing it for a while now, and it’s working very well…check out the example below…

Among the new features, we tossed in a few fixes here and there. Now, when you go to “post” to your social networks, we remember which ones you last posted to, and pre-select those only. Next week will be another big week for us…full of new services, features, and fixes.

We’re hoping you’re enjoying the 2.0 so far!

Now you can use your Gravatar with IntenseDebate. To use your Gravatar with IntenseDebate, check out the new option in your IntenseDebate profile (screenshot below). Don’t know what a Gravatar is? Learn more here.

We’ve also released new moderation features for blog admins. Admins are now able to ban a commenter from posting on their blog by IP address or email. This is useful for those pesky spammers and self-promoters that just won’t leave your blog alone. This gives admins the ability to ban anonymous commenters who haven’t created an IntenseDebate account as well. In addition, admins can also flag posts to be held for moderation based on IP and email. These new moderation tools are available in your “Settings” panel located in your IntenseDebate account.

We love your feedback, so keep the ideas coming! Job well done Austin!
