Smart, Innopub, Cebu Capitol Provide Cebu Guide App for APEC Delegates

Delegates attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in Cebu now have access to a handy guide on where the top attractions and latest activities in the province are with the release of the updated travel app Cebu Guide.

Made available by InnoPub Media and mobile leader Smart Communications (Smart) in partnership with the Cebu Provincial Government, the mobile app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store for Android devices and Apple App Store for iOS. The app can also be downloaded from apps.myguide.ph/cebu/.

The guide lists island attractions - from heritage structures like ancient houses and centuries-old stone churches to white sand beaches and island-hopping destinations, a wide range of land and water activities, the best accommodations, food to try, and important contact numbers.

“Cebu is working to make APEC 2015 meetings a success. One of the initiatives is tapping existing partnerships like the Digital Tourism program with SMART and InnoPub,” said Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III.

“By providing delegates with information through the Cebu Guide app, we make their visits meaningful. By using the platform for announcements, we are also helping Cebuanos get the latest updates on APEC activities,” Gov. Davide said.

The app directory also provides a complete listing of Department of Tourism-accredited tour guides, tour operators, transport services as well as consular offices and emergency contacts like police and hospitals.

Tourist attractions, hotels and other locations featured in the app have GPS data and users need only to tap the "check location" link to be guided on how to get to a place. Contact details are also active and users need only to tap on phone numbers to call a guide, tour operator, police station or any person or organization listed on the app.

“We are happy to support the Cebu Provincial Government in promoting what Cebu can offer to the APEC delegates. A comprehensive and handy guide to Cebu, the Cebu Guide can help the delegates maximize their stay in the country. This is aligned with our digital tourism program which aims to enhance the delivery of tourism information through the use of mobile and digital technologies,” said Smart Public Affairs Group Head Ramon Isberto.

A chapter of the travel guide will carry important Cebu updates, such as developments pertaining to the anticipated APEC meetings scheduled from August to October. The locally-relevant APEC updates will be provided by the Cebu Provincial Government.

The mobile app has a notification function that allows users to immediately receive information on such things as traffic changes like rerouting and road closures for the duration of the APEC 2015 meetings in Cebu.

“We are excited to collaborate with SMART and the Cebu Provincial Government to help tourists and APEC delegates make the most of their Cebu visit by providing them with important information on where to go and what to do when in Cebu,” said Max Limpag, InnoPub Media co-founder.

The app is released as part of the nationwide Digital Tourism program by SMART and InnoPub Media in collaboration with local government units and private organizations. The program started in Cebu and is now in Iloilo, Baguio, Albay and Bohol and is set for expansion in key tourism areas in the country.

Smart, InnoPub Launches Tourist Guide App To Guide Bohol Visitors

The release of Bohol Guide is part of a nationwide Digital Tourism campaign by wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and new media startup InnoPub Media that harnesses mobile technology to deliver tourism, cultural and historical information. In Bohol, the program is implemented in partnership with the Bohol Provincial Government.

“Aside from enhancing tourist experience, the Bohol Guide can also help local communities and businesses—some of which may still be recovering from the earthquake two years ago,” said Smart Public Affairs Group Head Ramon Isberto.

The app is a comprehensive resource about Bohol and provides information on where to go, what to do, and where to stay when in the province. From the iconic Chocolate Hills, to the serene Man-Made Forest, old heritage structures including Spanish-period churches and the beautiful Panglao Island, Bohol has a lot to offer its visitors and the app provides information on all these.

The app also lists the different Surprise Tour packages launched by the Bohol Provincial Government to highlight eco-tourism and heritage destinations.

A portable directory of transportation service providers and tour guides and operators accredited by the Department of Tourism Central Visayas is available in the app. It also contains a listing of restaurants, pension houses, hotels and resorts that are members of the Bohol Association of Hotels, Resorts, and Restaurants (BAHRR). The listings are active and users of the app need only to tap on the information to call the hotel, resort or restaurant, send an email and even know its location and get a suggested route to get there.

The Bohol Guide contains a special section on Anda town, a tourism enclave about 100 kilometers from Tagbilaran City. This section contains information on places to go in the town, including the enchanting Lamanoc Island, and where to stay when in Anda.

The app can be downloaded for free via Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Download information can also be found at apps.myguide.ph/bohol.

Brand new researches, inventions and discoveries once again take the limelight with the conduct of the 2015 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) on September 15-17 at SM City, Iloilo.

Inventions will compete in the following categories: Outstanding Invention (TUKLAS Award), Outstanding Utility Model, Outstanding Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research, Outstanding Student Creative Research Category for College (SIBOL Award), and Student Creative Research Category for High School (SIBOL Award).

The said invention contest which is in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) and DOST VI is an excellent avenue for researchers to impart science-based scientific and technological ideas developed among their inventions to the public and private sectors. Broadband revenues amounted to P7.6 billion by the end of June 2015, a solid increase of 30% from previous year's P5.9 billion. Parents and teachers who grew up with Batibot can now let their children and students enjoy the popular children’s educational TV show through a mobile phone application. The Batibot Android application, which was recently launched by mobile leader Smart Communications, was designed specifically for kids in kindergarten up to Grade 3.

Through fun-filled games on the app, children in their formative years can develop essential thinking skills. They can learn basic concepts like matching, sorting, and grouping. They are shown how to identify shapes, colors, numbers, the alphabet, and letter sounds. The children can also practice tracing letters with the proper strokes.

The Batibot app, which can be downloaded for free, also supports early literacy by nurturing children’s love for storytelling.

Developed in collaboration with the Community of Learners Foundation (COLF) and startup partner OrangeFix, the Batibot app is the first learning app in Filipino that is aligned with the national kindergarten curriculum of the Department of Education.

The Batibot app has interactive features like the classic game “Alin Ang Naiba,” where children are asked to identify what is different from a group of objects and pictures. Kindergartners can also practice writing by tracing letters on their device, and sing along to Batibot songs via the app’s videoke feature.

Meanwhile, the “Kuwentong Batibot” feature provides children with access to stories in Filipino, with the aim of establishing a firm foundation for early and emergent literacy.

The Batibot app is one of the key features of the Smart TechnoCart, a mobile digital laboratory launched last June to enhance learning among kindergartners through mobile devices and applications.

Each Smart TechnoCart contains 20 tablets which come preloaded with the Batibot app. It also has a laptop and projector for use by the teacher; a Smart Bro pocket WiFi with prepaid load for connectivity; and the Smart One Campus, a learning management system that helps administrators and teachers track and measure their students’ academic performance.

Now that the kindergarten program is a national program of the public school system, we would like to continue this tradition of supporting children as they begin their journey in schools and, we hope, as lifelong learners,” de los Angeles said.

“This time, we also see the urgency of supporting very young children as they enjoy their digital play experiences in a language that we hope they would learn to love and be comfortable with – Filipino,” she added.

It’s Official! Google Philippines Appointed New Country Manager

Google Philippines had just appointed Kenneth Lingan today as the new Country Manager for the Philippines.

Ken before joining Google works at Unilever where he was the Vice-President for Deodorants, Southeast Asia based in Singapore. Before that, he was also the Marketing Director for Unilever Home and Personal Care in the Gulf Region.

"Ken's 16 years of experience in marketing and brand development will be a real asset as we continue to grow our business from the Manila office,” said Julian Persaud, Google’s managing director for Southeast Asia.

“The Philippines is fast digitizing, and I am very much inspired by the possibilities that Google can bring our users, advertisers, and publishers here.
