Twitter just recently turned 6 years old! How long have you been on Twitter?

Although many educators have realized the tremendous resources available via Twitter there are still many that have not joined or have not used it to its full potential.

There are other ways to find your Twitter birthday (see my post When Did Your Friends Join Twitter), but http://twbirthday.com/ not only tells you your Twitter birthday but does so via a Twitter birth certificate.

Simply go to http://twbirthday.com/ and enter in your username:

Wait a few seconds and you’ll get your birth certificate:

Unfortunately you can’t download the certificate but by using a screen capture app (I use SnagIt) you can get a pretty good certificate:

This is a very nice way for students and teachers to add to their digital portfolios.

This will date me just a bit but Passwords Plus was a great program to store sensitive information and then sync it to my Palm device so I could have the information everywhere I went.

Well, we know what happened to Palm! But instead of abandoning Passwords Plus, I continued to store sensitive information in the desktop version and then export the data to a pdf file that I could put on my new mobile devices. Not the most elegant solution but at least it was something!

Just a few months ago Passwords Plus finally released a new version that runs on iOS! In the old days, Passwords Plus used to cost a pretty penny—I can’t remember the exact amount but for some reason $29.99 comes to mind. The new version costs $1.99!!!! Take a look:

If you’re not sure why you would pay for a password manager when there are several free alternatives then read on. Passwords Plus is much more than a passwords manager. In fact, it doesn’t even integrate with browsers to automatically fill in website usernames and passwords. It’s more about the Plus! It really is a quick database app than can store all sorts of information. Yes, passwords are important, but imagine how much more information you would like at your fingertips but want no one else to see. That is the power of Passwords Plus!

It has many templates available so setting up the database is quick and easy.

Pick the appropriate template and off you go! You can even customize each template after launching it.

Going back to my Palm days, syncing was always an adventure. Now, Passwords Plus will sync your data to its secure servers and then all your devices will have the updated info. In addition, it will sync to the desktop version as well.

Passwords Plus is available in the Apple App Store at $1.99. In addition, Windows users can download the free desktop version here. Even though this is an iOS app, unfortunately at this time there is no Mac desktop version. I’m hoping that they will be working on an Android version but for now I’ve installed the new Passwords Plus on my iPad, laptop and desktop.

Happy Days are here again!

Khan Academy released their iPad app yesterday so I decided to give it a quick spin this morning. If you’re an educator and have not heard about Khan Academy then it’s probably time to take a look. Even 60 Minutes did a piece just last night. I have also placed the 60 Minutes story in the upper right corner of this post.

I like the fact that the app now makes it easy to find the topic you are interested in very quickly. In addition the ability to download the videos to your iPad makes it easy to use when you happen to be offline.

This post is not about whether you like Khan Academy or not. It is not about whether you think that Khan Academy is “The Future of Education.” I view Khan Academy as just another resource to use in the classroom.

That being said, all is not perfect in the new app. When looking for one video, I was told it was not available and to “check back in a few hours.” In addition, horror upon horror, the app crashed!

As a math teacher, I like this resource a lot. Being able to access the videos offline on an iPad is tremendous as I don’t always have Internet access available or in some instances the bandwidth is just not enough to make it a comfortable experience.

I will continue to play around with this new app. So far, I like what I see but just as Khan Academy isn’t perfect, neither is the app. But it’s a great start!

If you’re still not convinced that it would be a good idea to teach students the proper use of social media, particularly Facebook, then this infographic is for you!

Now I’ll admit these are extreme cases but imagine all the lesser posts on Facebook that could get students into trouble. Where are the kids, and for that matter adults, learning about social media responsibility. It’s probably time that education stop the “head in the sand” approach to social media and start teaching responsibility. Take a look!

Privacy issues are a very hot topic for anyone using social media. As educators, I believe it is our responsibility to teach our students the ins and outs of how to responsibly use social media.

Just in the past few weeks very important issues concerning online privacy have surfaced and must be addressed. For instance, are you aware of Google’s new privacy policy? If not, one of the big issues is that starting March 1, 2012, Google will share your web search history! In order to address this issue and clear your history, please read this article.

In addition, it has just been reported that Facebook is reading text messages of people who use their smartphone apps. Facebook has denied this accusation but how does this make you feel?

I recently wrote “Facebook Doesn’t Care One Bit About Your Reputation” with the intent being that even if you do all you can to protect your privacy, the use of social media is sometimes out of your control.

I believe social media is important for educators and students. But I also believe it must be used responsibly and that cannot be accomplished without knowing the intricacies of social media privacy. Take a look at this infographic from MDG about the sad state of social media privacy.
