10. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895 AD)

Louis Pasteur, French chemist and microbiologist, is the man behind the process of pasteurization, the reason why we are able to drink milk without breeding cows. He explained about biogenesis and proposed a theory named as the “Germ Theory”. Pasteur made discoveries in vaccination and created vaccines for rabies and anthrax. He also studied the causes and prevention of diseases, thus saving many lives. Pasteur’s discoveries in the field of chemistry include those on asymmetry of crystals and racemisation. All of this led to Pasteur being titled the “father of microbiology”. His breadth of accomplishment and approaches in different fields of discoveries and inventions makes him a giant genius. He died in 1895.

9. Michael Faraday (1791-1867)

Born on 1791, British citizen Michael Faraday was a son of a blacksmith who had to leave school in the fourth grade.It started working as a bookbinder and taught himself to read and writer. Faraday is specially known for his discoveries of electromagnetic inductions and rotations, field theory, dia-magnetization and the magneto-optical effect. This humble genius invented the electric motor and Faraday’s ring. Faraday also published research papers optical deceptions, condensation of gases and isolation of benzene from gas oils. He also wrote books on ” Experimental Researches in Electricity” and the “Chemical history of the Candle”. Faraday died on 1867.

8. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642 AD)

Galileo is most famously remembered for his advancements in astronomy. An Italian physicist, astronomer, mathematician and philosopher he improved the telescope and made significant astronomical observations such as the confirmation of the phases of Venus and discovery of satellites of Jupiter. He also discovered the law of pendulum as he watched a chandelier swing in the cathedral of Pisa. He wrote ‘Two New Sciences’ which comprised descriptions of kinematics and strength of materials and led him to be called “Father of Modern Physics”. Galileo became blind in his old days and died in the year 1642.

7. Niels Henrik D Bohr (1885-1962)

Niels Bohr, a Danish physicist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1922 for his work on atomic structure and quantum theory. Bohr is equally famous for the Bohr model of the atom, which states that the energy levels of the atoms are discrete and that electrons revolving around the nucleus in orbits, can jump from one energy level to another releasing energy. Bohr also has an element named after him, ‘Bohrium’, earlier named as ‘hafnium’. Bohr was a part of the British mission to the Manhattan project and also a played a role in the established of CERN. He died in the year 1962.

6.Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931)

Thomas Alva Edison was born in 1847. Excelled as both scientist and inventor, Edison patented a whopping total of 1,093 inventions in his life time. Most of the inventions that came from Edison are batteries, phonographs, cement, mining, telegraphs, lights and powers. He also improved the telephone made by Graham Bell and invented the kinetoscope that was used for viewing moving films. He was seen working almost more than 20 hours a day. Edison masterminded the digital voting system with his electro-graphic vote recorder for the legislative of the parliament. He also proposed ideas on preserving fruits by keeping it in vacuum. Edison pioneered the idea for storage batteries that was later used by Henry ford in his automobile. “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration” is one of the most famous quote by this genius. He died in the year 1931.

5. Marie Curie (1867-1934 AD)

Marie Curie holds record for the first female to be awarded with a Nobel Prize. Inventor and scientist Curie was born as the youngest of five children in the year 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. She invented the first mobile X-ray machine which helped to check the injured soldiers in the battlefield. Radium is another great invention from her. Curie experimented different elements to check their radio activity and found thorium. She also invented the pitch-blend which was the source of radiation in a mixture more powerful than uranium or thorium. She is also called ” the mother of atom bomb” with her invention of the radio active materials. During World War I, Curie set up France’s first radiology centre and also developed mobile radiography vehicles and units that helped save many soldiers’ lives. But unfortunately, this continued exposure to radiation led to aplastic anaemia and she died of it in 1934.

4. Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

Charles Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. Darwin, an English naturalist and zoologist, pioneered evolutionary theory and evolutionism. Collected evidence over 20 years, and published conclusions in On the Origin of Species (1859). He explained that all life has descended from common ancestors and that evolution has taken place through a process called natural selection. This is the dominant scientific explanation of diversity of life. He died in the year 1882.

3. Sir Issac Newton (1643-1727 AD)

Born on 1643 in Woolsthrope, England, Sir Issac Newton is best known for his law on gravitation. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time. Newton’s contribution to science is wide and unparalleled. His field of work such as the laws of motion is still being followed in schools and colleges as the basis of scientific understanding. His genius can be gauged from the fact that he discovered gravity from the simple act of an apple falling from the tree. Newton also validated the heliocentric model of the cosmos, built the first telescope, formulated empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound. As a mathematician Newton contributed to infinitesimal calculus, power series, binomial theorem and method for approximation of roots of a function. He was knighted with the title Sir by Queen Anne in 1705. Newton died in 1727.

2. Albert Einstein (1879-1955 AD)

Born on 1879 in Ulm, Einstein is considered as one of the greatest revolutionary scientist the world has ever known. The “Man of Century” has some spectacular works in physics which even makes him the father of modern physics for his contribution in developing the general theory of relativity. The world’s most famous equation E=mc2 on which the bomb is based comes from his theory. One of the greatest scientist of the 20th century, Einstein’s Special theory of relativity revolutionized physics which even challenged the scientists at CERN. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921 for the discovery of the law of photoelectric effect. What is a Bootloader?

In literal terms, bootloader is code that is executed before any Operating System starts to run. Why is Bootloader Locked?

With a locked bootloader on Android devices, it is virtually impossible to flash a Custom ROM and forced attempts void warranty as well as usually end up in bricks. Android Bootloaders

Every Android phone has a bootloader that instructs the operating system kernel to boot normally. But you need to understand one thing here that as Android OS is an open source OS and is available on a variety of different hardware, every manufacturer has their own version of bootloader specific for the hardware present in it’s environment. How To Unlock Bootloader On Nexus Android Devices:

Before attempting this guide to unlock your bootloader, please note that this is intended for Android phone with STOCK ANDROID OS ONLY. We will be using a Google Nexus One as our reference because it comes with zero user interface alteration from it’s manufacturer. If you are looking to unlock bootloaders on handsets which already have a custom UI from manufacturers installed like HTC Sense, Samsung TouchWiz etc, then this guide won’t be applicable.

1) The first step is download and install Android SDK as instructed in this post.

2) Once you are done with downloading and installing SDK, turn off your device and boot in bootloader mode:

On Nexus One, press and hold the power button and trackball.
On Nexus S, press and hold the volume-up and power buttons.
On Galaxy Nexus, press and hold volume-up, volume-down and power buttons.

On Nexus 4, press and hold volume-down and power buttons.

On Nexus 7, press and hold volume-down and power buttons.
On Nexus 10, press and hold volume-up, volume-down and power buttons.

3) Connect your device to your PC via USB and wait till any drivers are installed, which should happen automatically.
4) Now go to command prompt / terminal interface on your computer and type following command:

fastboot oem unlock

5) Once this is done, your phone will show a screen that will prompt you regarding unlocking bootloader. Read through the instructions carefully and confirm by pressing volume up button followed by the power button.

Dalvik or ART : which Runtime is Better on Android

If you have an Android phone running KitKat (4.4), you can get a performance and battery life boost by switching from the outdated Dalvik runtime. The runtime on your device is the sub-system that determines how applications and tasks run. The ART runtime is set to replace Dalvik. Although the Dalvik runtime did a decent job, it was still a major cause of bottlenecks on the system. Why? Because Dalvik is a Just-In-Time compiler. This type of compiler ran code at the moment it needed it.

The newer ART runtime is an Ahead-of-Time compiler that processes application instructions before they are needed. This is much more efficient both for performance and battery life.

The major difference between ART and Dalvik is the way they execute the apps. Based on JIT (just in time) compiler, Dalvik runs the command only when needed. On the other hand, ART features an AOT (ahead of time) system that processes code in advance to deliver a relatively smoother user experience.

You can choose to use it by going to "Settings> Developer Options> Select Runtime" and choosing ART.

ART vs Dalvik

Dalvik is based on JIT (just in time) compilation. It means that each time you run an app, the part of the code required for its execution is going to be translated (compiled) to machine code at that moment. As you progress through the app, additional code is going to be compiled and cached, so that the system can reuse the code while the app is running. Since JIT compiles only a part of the code, it has a smaller memory footprint and uses less physical space on the device.

ART, on the other hand, compiles the intermediate language, Dalvik bytecode, into a system-dependent binary. The whole code of the app will be pre-compiled during install (once), thus removing the lag that we see when we open an app on our device. With no need for JIT compilation, the code should execute much faster.

Except for the potential speed increase, the use of ART can provide an important secondary benefit. As ART runs app machine code directly (native execution), it doesn't hit the CPU as hard as just-in-time code compiling on Dalvik. Less CPU usage results in less battery drain, which is a big plus for portable devices in general.

Let's take a quick overview of the results of their benchmarks:

Conclusion
Personally, I saw an improvement in the speed and smoothness of scrolling in apps. ART makes the UI feel more responsive. At this time, ART is not fully optimized. I expect even better results in the future, after Google acquires more feedback and makes additional optimizations. As I see it, end users will definitely benefit from the switch, once ART matures and gets more stable. However, developers, who frequently deploy apps, will feel more intensively the negative impact of prolonged install times.

1.Remove extra apps, wallpapers, widgets

Some apps start up with the phone, while others are constantly syncing with online services. Both of these can dramatically slowdown users' smartphones. To check which apps are running in the background, users should visit the Apps section in Settings, and swipe to the 'Running' tab. There's more there than USB debugging

Hidden in the settings on your phone, (really, they are hidden by default) are settings used for debugging and application development. While plenty of us have dove in there to switch to the ART runtime or to enable USB debugging, there's a long list of options. While most of us will never use them, it's always nice to know what's going on under the hood of your phone.
Let's take a look at them, and see if we can't decipher some of these settings so that all of us have a better understading of what happens when you tap them. Come on, you've tapped them ...

'Unlocking' the developer options settings

As we mentioned, the developer options on your phone are hidden by default. This actually makes a lot of sense, because they are easy to "unhide" and most people have little need to use any of them. But everyone reading this is a bit more advanced than most people, simply because you are reading an Android enthusiast website.

Unlocking them is easy-peasy. Open the settings on your phone, and find the "About" section. Look through it until you see the "Build number" entry. Tap if five times in quick succession, and you should see a small dialog letting you know that you're now a developer. Try not to break stuff, mmkay? Or break everything — either way is good! Really, some of these settings can make your phone run really really poorly.

Let's have a look at them and figure out why.

Settings in Developer options

Take bug report: Tapping this option grabs the current log files on your device, packages them up and prepares them for sending to, well, whomever you want to have it. It takes a minute or two after you tap it, and you'll see a notification once it's ready. Tap that notification to send it on it's way. Swipe it away to cancel.
Desktop backup password: You can use ADB to backup and restore things like apps and their associated data to and from your computer. This option forces a password on those backups, and they can't be restored without that password.
Stay awake: Checking this box will force the screen on your phone to stay on anytime and every time it is plugged in. This works with a wall charger or your computer's USB port, and is a great way to make sure you burn images into your screen. Don't use this one unless you need to!
Select runtime: Here is where (for now)you choose to use Dalvik or ART. ART is still experimental and what we have now isn't what will eventually be released in Android L. Some phones really don't like the current ART runtime preview, so refer to the forum for your particular device before going there.
Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log: Sometimes, a developer (or security specialist) will need to capture and analyze Bluetooth HCI (Host Controller Interface) packets. Enabling this will place them in a file on the device storage (/sdcard/btsnoop_hci.log) for retrieval. You can then analyze them with a program like Wireshark.
Process stats: Everything you ever needed to know about the running processes on your phone. Go ahead and tap it, then tap one of the entries. For the layman, it's just a lot of numbers, but for a developer debugging his or her app, this information might save the day.
USB debugging: This is what allows your phone to communicate over the USB port on your computer via the Android Debug Bridge (ADB). You need to enable this to use things like DDMS, or to use ADB commands.
Revoke USB debugging authorizations: When you use a computer to debug over USB for the first time, you have to authorize it and set up a keypair. This setting revokes all those and forces you to do it again.
Power menu bug reports: Puts an option in the menu you see when you press and hold the power key to collect and send a bug report (as seen above). Very handy if you're testing something.
Allow mock locations: This setting will let you manually write location information, making your phone think it is somewhere it really isn't. Besides cheating at foursquare, this is useful if an app uses location information.
Select debug app: This setting lets you choose an application to debug. You don't really need to attach it to a debugger, but if you do it prevents error messages when paused on a breakpoint. If you don't understand what this means, you'll never need to use this setting and probably shouldn't. It's built for use with tools application developers use to make sure their app runs as intended.
Wait for debugger: This setting is greyed out unless you've set an app to debug. When set up and selected, it simply prevents the chosen application from starting until the debugger is attached. This is more application debugging stuff most of us will never need.
Verify apps over USB: Lets Google scan applications you installed via ADB for malicious behavior. This is a good thing.
Show touches: Select this to see a visual cue on the screen when and where a touch was registered.
Pointer location: This setting places an information bar at the top of your screen telling you the screen coordinates of the last place the screen was touched.
Show surface updates: Makes the edge of a "window" flash when its contents are updated. Annoying as hell.
Show layout bounds: Marks the edges of all the elements in a dialog so you know where any touch will activate them. Try this one, then quickly shut it off.
Force RTL layout direction: Forces screen orientation for right to left language support.
Window animation scale: Sets the speed for window animation playback. A lower number is faster.
Transition animation scale: Sets the speed for transition animation playback. Again, lower is faster.
Simulate secondary displays: This setting allows developers to simulate different screen sizes. It's pretty wonky.
Force GPU rendering: Forces applications to use hardware 2D rendering if they were written to not use it by default. Sometimes, this does wonders. Other times, everything goes to hell. Be careful here.
Show GPU view updates: With this setting, any view that is drawn with the GPU hardware gets a red overlay.
Show hardware layer updates: Read what Romain Guy has to say about using hardware layers to back your applications views. This setting will tell you when those layers update.
Debug GPU overdraw: Overdraw happens every time the application asks the system to draw something on top of something else. This setting lets you see when and where this is happening so you know if it is a problem.
Force 4x MSAA: This setting forces multi-sample anti-aliasing (MSAA). Like any other computer graphics hardware, more AA makes things look better, but performance takes a hit.
Strict mode enabled: This setting flashes the screen when an application uses the main thread to perform long, intensive operations.
Show CPU usage: Places a tiny window in the upper right of your screen with information about the CPU and how it is being used. A neat one to play with.
Profile GPU rendering: This setting can either draw a graph on the screen, or write it to a file. The graph is a visual rendering of how hard the GPU is working. This is another really neat one to try.
Enable OpenGL traces: This setting watches for OpenGL errors, and places them in the log file you chose when you started it up. Nothing that most users will ever need to touch.
Don't keep activities: This setting destroys (as in, forces everything closed) any and every application as soon as you leave the main view. Nothing good can come of this, regardless of what you might have heard on the Internet.
Background process limit: Allows a custom setting of how many process can run in the background at once. Another one most of us shouldn't be fiddling with very often, if at all.
Show all ANRs: This setting makes every process show an "App Not Responding" dialog if it gets hung — even background processes that the user did not start. Useful if one application is interfering with another.

Clearly, most of us will have no need for the bulk of these settings. Also, getting in there and tapping things for the sake of tapping them can really make bad things happen. But it's always good to know what can be done, even if we never intend to do it.

1. Create an interest list

Interest lists are an optional way to organise the content you are interested in on Facebook. You can create your own interest lists based on the things you care about, or follow other people's lists. For example, you could create a 'Top Indie Bands' list that features bands' Pages and public updates from band members.

To create your own interest list, go to https://www.facebook.com/bookmarks/interests and click the 'Add Interests' button. The click 'Create List' and search for the people or Pages you want to add to your list, or use the categories on the left to browse. After you've selected the things you want to include, you can pick a name for your list and select a privacy setting. Choose 'Public' if you want others to be able to subscribe to the list you've created.

When you follow a list, you'll be able to see updates from that list by clicking the arrow at the top right of your homepage and then clicking on the list name. You'll see a feed of the posts and activity from the people and Pages on that list. You may also see highlights from this list in your main news feed.

2. View Friendship history

The main Messages folder contains messages from your friends and their friends. All other messages will go into an 'Other' folder where you can look at them separately.

This Other folder isn't visible until you view your main Messages folder, and Facebook doesn't send you a notification when a new message arrives in this folder. You might therefore have hundreds of unread messages that Facebook has filed in your Other inbox.

4. View Photos the old way

If you don't like the way that photos appear in a pop-out black box when you click on them, you can simply revert to the preview Facebook photo display by pressing F5 on your keyboard. This allows you to flick through the photos in an album in classic view.

5. Prevent tagged posts from automatically displaying on your Timeline

Facebook gives you the option to manually approve or dismiss tags that people add to your posts. When you turn it on, anytime someone tags a photo or post you made, that tag won't appear until you approve it.

To turn on tag review, click on the arrow at the top right of any Facebook page and select 'Settings' In the left-hand column. 6. Turn your profile upside down

7. Download your Facebook data

There is a feature in the General Account Settings that allows you to download information available to you in your account such as your timeline info, posts you have shared, messages, photos and more. Additionally, it includes information that is not available simply by logging into your account, like the ads you have clicked on, data like the IP addresses that are logged when you log into or out of Facebook, and more.

Click the arrow at the top right of any Facebook page and choose Settings. At the bottom of the General Account Settings in an option to "Download a copy of your Facebook data". Unfortunately, there is no way to individually select which data you would like to download when you download your Facebook info, so you will have to download your file in its entirety.

8. Activity log

Your Facebook activity log is a list of your posts and activity, from today back to the very beginning. You'll also see stories and photos you've been tagged in, as well as the connections you've made - like when you liked a Page or added someone as a friend. You can also use it to review and manage what you share on Facebook.

You can get to your activity log by clicking the arrow at the top right of any Facebook page and choosing Settings, followed by 'Privacy'. Next to 'Who can see my stuff?' click 'Use Activity Log'.

This can be used to quickly review your photos, and photos you're tagged in, that are shared with Public, and also review photos that you have hidden on your timeline.

9. Send a private message from a traditional email account

Send a message to someone on Facebook from your traditional email account (Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail etc) using their @facebook.com email address. This is in the format username@facebook.com. The emails will be delivered to your Facebook Messages folder

When you send messages to external email addresses, your emails will be formatted to look like Facebook messages, including your name, your profile picture and your message.

10. Turn off mobile push notifications

Sometimes getting endless notifications on your mobile phone about Facebook updates is just irritating. Push notifications can be turned on or off from your Facebook app or the settings on your smartphone.

From your Android, iPhone or iPad go to Privacy Settings > Notifications > Mobile Push and un-tick the things you don't want to get notifications about. It is not currently possible to adjust push notifications from mobile browsers or from feature phones.

Reduce the number of programs running at startup

Delete an entire word

Instead of deleting a single letter, pressing CTRL + BKSP will delete the entire word behind the cursor. This makes deleting text quicker if you screw up a whole word.

Move Cursor to beginning of the next or previous word

Moving the cursor around manually while typing is a great way to make your work take longer than it needs to. To speed of the process, move the cursor around with keyboard shortcuts. To move it to the beginning of the previous word, use CTRL + Left Arrow. To move it to the beginning of the next word, use CTRL + Right Arrow. In OS X you can accomplish the same using the Option key.

Making sub and superscript Text

If you need to make sub or superscript text (think exponents for superscript), press CTRL + = for subscript and CTRL + SHIFT + = for superscript text.

Paste plain text of what was copied

When you copy text from any source, programs will usually copy any formatting that comes with it. To paste this as plain text, press CTRL + Shift + V instead of the standard CTRL + V, and the system will paste unformatted text.

Note that many programs follow this parameter (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) but not all, particularly Microsoft programs like Word or Outlook. For those there's a few alternatives that go beyond copying and pasting in Notepad: 1) CTRL + ALT + V will show a 'paste special' dialog box. 2) CTRL + Spacebar will remove formatting in already pasted text. 3) Download Puretext and choose a hotkey to always paste plain text with it.

Often times, malware will prevent a computer from running certain programs. Changing the name of the .exe file can often override this. If that doesn’t work, changing the extension to .com is another useful alternative, and the program will still be able to run in spite of the extension change.

Take a few seconds to read each step to make sure you are not agreeing to install something other than the program you were actually seeking. Far too often people just push next over and over, and end up with a browser covered in various search bars that just aren't needed. In the worst of scenarios, these can have nefarious intentions.

Lock your computer if you get up

Sick of your "friends" going onto your computer at work or home and posting things on your Facebook/Twitter page on your behalf? It’s certainly an annoyance, but an easy one to prevent. Windows + L will lock your system right away, requiring a password (if you've set one) to log in again.

Lesson one: New challenges require new ways of thinking

Part car, part jet fighter, part spaceship, Bloodhound SSC aims to be the first land vehicle to break the 1,000mph barrier. One of the key challenges has been to design the wheels. How do you create the fastest wheels in history, make them stable and reliable at supersonic speeds, and with limited resources?

After much deliberation, and devising ideas that pushed the boundaries of material technology, Mark Chapman, chief engineer of the Bloodhound project said the team decided to take a step back and change the way they were trying to solve problems. “There’s very little we’ve actually developed that’s new,” he says, “what’s unique is how we apply technologies.”

They adopted an approach called the design of experiments – a mathematical technique of problem solving through doing lots of little experiments and then looking at the statistics all glued together. “All of a sudden, where we’d been knocking our head against the wall for maybe two, three, four months, we came up with a wheel design that would hold together and was strong enough,” he says.

Lesson two: Let evidence shape your opinion

Like his peers, geophysicist Steven Jacobsen from Northwestern University believed that water on Earth originated from comets. But by studying rocks, which allow scientists to peer back in time, he discovered water hidden inside ringwoodite, which lies in the Earth’s mantle, and which suggests that the oceans gradually made its way out of the planet’s interior many centuries ago.

“I had a pretty hard time convincing others,” he admits. Yet two key pieces of evidence uncovered this year seem to support his point of view. Time will tell whether the new theories are true, and there may be further twists to the tale. “But thinking about the fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time doesn’t happen very often,” he says. “When it does it’s thrilling.”

Lesson three: It really is 99% perspiration

Sheila Nirenberg at Cornell University is trying to develop a new prosthetic device for treating blindness. Key to this was cracking the code that transmits information from the eye to the brain. “Once I realised this, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep – all I wanted to do was work,” says Nirenberg.

“Sometimes I’m exhausted and I get burnt out,” she adds. “But then I get an email from somebody in crisis or somebody who’s getting macular degeneration, and they can’t see their own children’s faces, and it is like, ‘How can I possibly complain?’ It gives me the energy to just go back and keep doing it.”

Lesson four: The answer isn’t always what you expect

Sylvia Earle has spent decades trying to see the ocean with new eyes. Her “dream machine” is a submarine that could take scientists all the way to the bottom of the deepest ocean floor. What sort of material could best withstand the types of pressure you would encounter thousands of feet below the ocean surface? “It could be steel, it could be titanium, it could be some sort of ceramic, or some kind of aluminium system,” says Earle. “But glass is the ultimate material.” By her estimates, a glass sphere about four-to-six inches (10-15cm) thick should be able safely explore the ocean depths she dreams of exploring.

Glass is the oldest material known to man and one of the least understood, says Tony Lawson, Earle’s engineering director at Deep Ocean and Exploration Research Marine. “It has a higgledy-piggledy molecular structure a bit like a liquid, rather than the ordered lattices often found in other solids. As a result, when glass is evenly squeezed from all sides – as it would be under the ocean – the molecules cram closer together and form a tighter structure.

Lesson five: A little luck goes a long way

It was hailed as one of the biggest success stories in the history of space exploration – 20 years of planning ended earlier this year with the Philae lander rendezvousing with Comet 67P over 300 million miles (480 million kilometres) away from Earth.

The biggest challenge, says Stephan Ulamec, manager of the Philae lander programme, was how to design a probe to land on a body whose makeup they had little knowledge about. “We had no idea of the size, we had no idea of the day-night cycle, which influences the thermal design, we had no idea of the gravity, so how fast would the lander impact, we had no idea how the surface looked,” he says.

They needed to create design parameters that could cope with an extremely wide range of possible comet structures – but banked on the comet being a relatively even potato shape with enough flat surfaces for the probe to land on. Even then, not everything went to plan, and two decades of meticulous planning could have failed within minutes at touchdown. Philae's anchoring harpoons didn't fire as planned, and it bounced off the comet before settling onto its icy surface and successfully beaming data back to its relieved creators.

For many in India, becoming the most populous country will be an achievement, marking the country's progress in its rivalry with China.

For others, particularly from the older generations, it represents a failure of the country's decades-old attempts to bring its population under control - which included a controversial and counter-productive mass sterilisation campaign during the 1970s.

In fact, birth rates have fallen significantly in almost all parts of India, driven by female education, rising household incomes and greater availability of contraception though this has been partially offset by increased life expectancy.

India's population is likely to reach about 1.6 billion in the 2060s, before decreasing to about 1.5 billion by the end of the century.

By then, according to the UN study, Nigeria may have overtaken China as the second most populous country.

INDIA WAS ONCE AN ISLAND

The Himalayan mountain range is the youngest in the world

India was once a continent. More than 100 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, most of what is now India was an island.

It had broken off from an ancient supercontinent referred to as Gondwanaland by paleogeographers (named after Gondwana, a forested area of central India), and was moving slowly northwards.

About 50 million years ago, dinosaurs by now extinct, the India continental plate collided with Asia, buckling the coastal area of both continents and creating the Himalayas - the world's youngest major mountain range - and, of course, the highest.

Evidence of this ancient history is provided by fossilised sea shells that can still be found high in the mountains. The plate on which the subcontinent rests continues to press slowly northwards, and is the reason why the height of Mount Everest increases slightly every year.

MULTILINGUAL

India has, arguably, greater linguistic diversity than any other large country.

The precise number of languages spoken in India is probably over 1,000, but it is often hard to define when one language begins and another ends.

The 1961 census of India listed 1,652 languages, though some of these may have effectively been dialects, and a few languages have died out since then.

The big six languages - Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil and Urdu - are each spoken by more than 50 million people.

A total of 122 languages are each spoken by more than 10,000 people.

India doesn't have a national language. Hindi and English are both official languages, though the writers of the constitution envisaged a transitional status for English, but opposition to Hindi hegemony from speakers of other languages, particularly Tamil, mean that English remains an official language.

Indian languages belong to four of the world's major language groups: Indo-European, Dravidian, Austro-Asiatic and Tibeto-Burman.

Until the mid-20th Century, the Bantu language group, which originates in Africa, was also represented by speakers of the Sidi language used by migrants from East Africa living in western India.

The language has now died out, though members of the Sidi community still use a few words of Bantu origin.

MEGACITIES

India has three of the world's top ten megacities - one more than China.

According to the UN, Delhi is now the second-largest urban agglomeration in the world, with Mumbai ranked seventh and Calcutta tenth.

The population of Delhi and its immediate urban hinterland is now over 22.65 million, and is only surpassed by Tokyo.

In the 17th century, Delhi was briefly the most populous city in the world, but by 1960, Delhi was not even in the top 30. The growth since then had been more than 4% per annum.

That growth rate is beginning to fall, but it is still over 3% annually.

That represents a yearly increase in population - through childbirth and migration - of about 700,000 people, putting a severe strain on the resources of India's capital.

Water remains a major problem - with almost quarter of the city's household not having a regular water supply.

Six other Indian cities - Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat - feature in the UN's top 100 urban agglomerations.

417,037, 606 VOTERS

India prides itself on being the world's largest democracy (Chinese voters do not directly elect their country's rulers), and precisely 417,037, 606 people voted at the last parliamentary election in 2009 - a turnout of slightly under 60%.

There were 830,866 polling stations, including one, in the western state of Gujarat which had a single voter, a temple caretaker.

The Election Commission of India advises that that no voter should have to travel more than two kilometres to the nearest polling station, and that, if necessary, a separate polling station can be set up for the inmates of a leprosy sanatorium.

India also holds the record for the most candidates for a single constituency - 1,032 candidates stood for the Modakurichi assembly seat in the Tamil Nadu state elections in 1996.

All but two of the candidates lost their deposit, and 88 candidates did not get a single vote.

IF INDIA WAS A MUSLIM STATE

India has the second (or third) highest population of Muslims in the world.

Even though less than 15% of Indians are Muslim, the country's enormous population means that by this measure it outranks all Muslim-majority countries, except Indonesia and possibly Pakistan. (There are almost exactly the same numbers of Muslims in Pakistan as in India).

The first Muslims in India are thought to have been traders who came to Kerala during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad. Millions of Muslims migrated at the time of independence to either West or East Pakistan (the latter became Bangladesh in 1971), but huge numbers also remained behind.

Today, the only Muslim-majority areas of India are the Kashmir valley, and the tiny Indian Ocean territory of Lakshadweep.

India's Muslims are quite thinly spread across the rest of the country, though they are almost non-existent in parts of the north-east and in Punjab.

DEADLY ROADS

There are more road deaths in India than any other country in the world.

This is a statistic that won't surprise many visitors, for whom the roads of India are often terrifying.

Officially about 115,000 people die on Indian roads each year - though a recent British Medical Journal study suggests that the true number of fatalities is closer to 200,000.

Among the stark figures to emerge from the BMJ report are that 37% of all road deaths are pedestrians, with a further 28% for cyclists and motorcyclists, and that 55% of all fatalities occur within five minutes of the road incident.

The study recommends more speed bumps, greater enforcement of greater use of safety helmets, and more fines and suspensions for drivers who break traffic rules.

In fact, although India has by the far the highest number of total road deaths, the per capita figure for several other countries, led by Eritrea and the Cook Islands, are much higher.

MOST INDIAN FILMS ARE NOT BOLLYWOOD

India has the world's largest film industry.

More than 1,100 movies are produced, on average, each year - that's slightly ahead of Nigeria, twice as many as the American film industry and ten times as many as Britain produces.

Most of the Indian films are not, as is often supposed, products of Bollywood, the nickname given to Mumbai's Hindi movie industry which is responsible for roughly 200 films a year.

Almost as many films are made each year in both Tamil and in Telugu, the two most widely spoken southern Indian language - and Chennai and Hyderabad are major film productions centres.

However, India comes only sixth in terms of cinema box office receipts - behind the USA, China, Japan, UK and France.

MANGOES GALORE

India is the world's biggest producer and consumer of mangoes.

For many people, the greatest delight of the hot Indian summer is the profusion of mangoes - officially India's national fruit.

There are several hundred varieties of Indian mango, of which more than 30 are commercially available.

Everyone seems to have their favourite, and I have witnessed furious argument about which is the best mango.

I have also discovered that it is possible to cause great offence in Mumbai, by suggesting that the local mango, the Alfonso, is not the best in the world.

More than 40% of the world's annual output of mangoes are grown in India, far ahead of the competition from China, Thailand and Bangladesh.

RECORD BREAKER

India is more obsessed with breaking records than any other country. Not something that I can prove with official sources, but I am pretty sure it is true.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, India ranks third behind the USA and the UK in the number of records claimed each year.

Among the recent additions was the largest gathering of people (891) dressed like Mahatma Gandhi.

But this leaves out the large number of often bizarre and obscure record claims that never make it to the Guinness Book, but that are compiled in similar local compendiums such as the Limca Book of Records and the India Book of Records.

The records include the longest garland made of cakes of cattle dung (2 km) , for performing yoga on horseback (10 hours) , and for lighting electric bulbs by passing a wire through one's nose and out of one's mouth (30 sixty-watt bulbs) . Sometimes record-seekers go too far - as do their parents.

In 2007, a 15-year-old boy, under the watchful eye of his doctor parents, performed a caesarean section in a hospital in Tamil Nadu, in an attempt to be recognised as the world's youngest surgeon. Unsurprisingly, the police and the medical authorities took a dim view of this particular attempt on a world record.

If you want to appear credible, try not to move too much. "Do not fidget, twitch, wiggle, squirm, or scratch," Lowndes says. Frequent hand motions near your face can give your listener the feeling that you're lying or anxious.

So you’ve lost your phone. We all been there. Maybe you lost it during a night of revelry. Or perhaps the chaos of your day-to-day was too much to handle. It could be in a million different places. Under the couch, the dry cleaners, or the beach where you loosely remember sand angels and whiskey. Maybe you’re prepared for this situation. More likely, though, this little debacle has left you with only vague ideas about how to recover it.

If you’re like many of us, you may not possess the foresight to preconfigure apps like Android’s Device Manager, or even swap your sim card into that old phone repurposed as your “party phone.” And that’s okay. Those precautions are a little over the top, anyway.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to track a lost cell phone. It’s still possible to find that phone (and save all that potentially damaging content stored on it) without previously downloading an app. Here’s our guide to finding that lost phone. In the spirit of equality, we’ll also cover all the bases for those who are still using those flip phones.

Smartphones

If your lost phone happens to be a smartphone, there are a number of clever apps out there designed to help you get it back ASAP. Both iOS and Android have similar abilities when it come to locating your phone. Your smartphone will have retrieval features that allows the phone to ring at maximum volume (even it it was silenced), as well as the option to lock the phone and send messages. Both operating systems also allow users to remotely erase all data stored on phone. Unfortunately, both phones are only trackable when they are powered on. If you loose your phone and it happens to be out of battery, your best bet is to follow the instructions we provided for analogue phones.

We do recommend caution when communicating to anyone who’s on the other side of this lost phone process. Be careful to avoid giving away any personal information, such as your home address, until you know you’re dealing with someone you can trust.

Android

It’ll let you add a message that will be shown to whomever picks up the device, as well as a single contact number that enables them to get in touch with you. Device manager does require a quick set-up and is therefore not the best option for someone who’s already lost their phone.

Device manager will, in the event that your phone is gone for good, let you protect your personal information (and all of those photos you don’t want anyone else to see!) by wiping all the data from your phone.

Plan B : It is a third party alternative. Unlike Device Manager, the app allows you to find your lost android device without downloading special software onto it beforehand. Just install it over the web via your Gmail account (required), and Plan B will send you e-mails every 10 minutes on the whereabouts of the device. The app uses cell towers to triangulate your phone’s location, so it’ll work even if GPS is turned off

iOS

The best way to get your iPhone back is Apple’s native feature Find My iPhone. The included app on every iPhone displays your phone’s location on a map. You’ll have a computer or another iPhone to deploy this feature. Unfortunately, these features are only available when your phone is powered on.

Simply log onto iCloud and open the Find my iPhone App. The App will locate your phone on a map and give you the option to play a sound, send a message to you phone with “lost mode”, or erase the contents of the iPhone. Selecting “Erase your iPhone” will delete your phone’s content. Fortunately, all of these retrieval features can be activated without any preconfiguration.

How to find your not-so-smart cell phone

1. Call your cell phone. Listen for the ring or vibrate and try to locate the phone through plain old human detection. If your phone is truly lost and in someone else’s hands then they are likely to answer if they intend to return the phone. If you don’t have access to a phone try using wheresmycellphone.com or freecall.com. Both sites will call your phone for free and allow to leave a message or talk to whomever is on the other side.

2. Retrace your steps. Do a full-fledged visual search. If you couldn’t hear a ring or vibration when you called it, don’t immediately assume that you’re phone is somewhere far away – the battery could be dead.

3. Text your phone. If you believe someone has stolen or possibly found your phone then send a text message to your phone with your contact info and a reward offer if you choose to do so. You can use many online services to send free text messages, such as txt2day.com.

4. Alert your service provider. If you’ve lost hope of finding it, then call your wireless carrier and let them know your phone is lost. Ask if they offer a GPS locating service. If not, ask them to suspend service to your phone to avoid any possible fraudulent charges.

5. Register your lost phone. If you have your phone’s serial number written down somewhere, register it with MissingPhones.org.

6. Prepare for the next time you lose your phone. Maybe you’re one of those people who’s always losing your phone. You may want to register for a GPS tracking service such as AccuTracking. We also recommend Belon.gs, which is a free QR code based lost and found service.
