Problem: Chrome Won’t Start, Could Not Open Your Profile

If your Chrome user profile is corrupted, then you would get this error message from Chrome:

Your profile could not be opened correctly.

Even after uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, you may still get this error and be unable to start Google Chrome.

Solution: Create A New Chrome User Profile

To solve this problem, you can create a new user profile in Google Chrome. In Windows, these are the steps needed to create a new profile and to fix the problem:

1. Exit Google Chrome completely.
2. Go to the Start menu > Run.
3. Enter one of the following directories in the text field, then press OK.

   Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\
   Windows Vista/ Windows 7: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

4. Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default".
5. Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is created automatically as you start using the browser.

If you want to, there is also a way to transfer bookmarks from your old profile to this new one, though it is not recommended since the old profile is corrupt.

Sign In To Sync Your Chrome Bookmarks

To minimize future problems, you should make sure you have a backup of your Chrome bookmarks. The easiest and most efficient way to do this would be to sign in to Chrome and choose to sync your bookmarks.

This way, you’ll always have a copy of your bookmarks online, whether you need to reinstall Chrome or use Chrome on another computer.

To sync your bookmarks:

1. In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Personal Stuff.
2. From there you can Sign In using your Google Account.
3. Click "Advanced" and select "Choose what to sync" from the drop down menu. Select Bookmarks, along with any other components of Chrome you want to sync.

So, even if your profile becomes corrupted again, or if other issues come up, then at least your bookmarks will be safe.

Here is a solution to this Windows Live Writer theme detection problem for WordPress users.

Problem: Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection

First off, this is a problem that does not affect your blog content online, but can affect your blog’s RSS feed by adding extra junk to your feed whenever you download and update your theme using Windows Live Writer. So, your subscribers will see these unnecessary and unintended posts on your blog’s RSS feed.

So, when you need to update Windows Live Writer to use the latest version of your blog theme (by clicking “Update Theme” in the “Preview” tab), Windows Live Writer asks you the following:

Would you like to download the blog theme by publishing a temporary post? The post will be removed immediately after your theme is retrieved.

This will let you see what your posts will look like online while you are editing.

Answering “Yes” to this will start the theme download, and a temporary post will be published and deleted on your blog.

The problem is that sometimes the temporary post does not get deleted properly, so that the temporary post is viewable in your RSS feed, even though it may not appear on your actual blog.

If you do have this problem, then when check your blog’s RSS feed, you’ll find these temporary posts with the title: Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection. This title is followed by a long string of letters and numbers in brackets.

The text content of the temporary post is:

This is a temporary post that was not deleted. Please delete this manually.

This text is also followed by a long string of letters and numbers in brackets.

While these temporary posts do not appear on your blog, but you can find them in your WordPress account online, in the trash.

Solution: Use Ultimate Category Excluder Plugin

In WordPress, since these temporary posts are all under the category “Uncategorized”, then using a plugin such as Ultimate Category Excluder in WordPress can hide them from your blog’s RSS feed.

After you install the plugin, go to the plugin settings page in WordPress, then exclude the “Uncategorized” posts from the Main Page, Feeds, and Archives. This will make sure the Windows Live Writer temporary posts will not appear anywhere in your blog or blog RSS feed.

If you use the “Uncategorized” category for other posts on your blog, then you could create a new category for those posts so that they are unaffected by the plugin.

While this solution won’t actually prevent the problem from happening, it will make it so your blog content and RSS feed content are unaffected.

You may still see these temporary posts in your WordPress trash, but now your blog visitors and subscribers will not see these temporary posts anywhere.

How To Fix Chrome’s Flash Plug-in Conflict

If the Shockwave Flash plug-in is constantly crashing in your Chrome browser, then it may be because of a Flash plug-in conflict within Chrome.

This happens in Chrome, and not in other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera), because Chrome also has its own version of a Flash plug-in, in addition to the Adobe Flash Player used elsewhere on your system.

If Flash works properly elsewhere, then your Chrome browser may be trying to unsuccessfully use 2 different versions of Flash, causing a plug-in conflict and the Flash crash error message.

One solution is to disable the Chrome Flash plug-in. Here are the basic steps to fix the problem:

1. Check Chrome Plug-ins List: Type “chrome://plugins” into the Chrome address bar to see all installed Chrome plug-ins.

2. Check For 2 Flash Plug-ins Installed: At the top-right of the Chrome Plug-ins page, click “Details” to expand the details on each plug-in listed. 

   

   Scroll down to the “Flash” section to see the installed Flash plug-ins. If 2 Flash plug-ins are installed, you will see the text “Flash (2 files)” at the top of the Flash section.

   

3. Disable Chrome Flash Plug-in: If there are 2 Flash plug-ins installed, then find the Chrome version by checking the “location” of the plug-in. Look for  the plug-in that is installed in a Chrome directory. Click “Disable” to turn off the Chrome Flash plug-in. Your Flash plug-in section will then look similar to the image below, where the Chrome Flash plug-in has been disabled and greyed out.

   

4. Restart Chrome: Make sure the other Flash plug-in version is still enabled, as shown above. Then close and restart Chrome. You can visit the Adobe Flash Player test page to see if Flash is working correctly now.
