Introduction:

Following in the footsteps of the BlackBerry Curve 9330 from two years ago comes the new Black Berry Curve 9310, available from Verizon Wireless for $49 with a 2-year contract. There really isn’t anything inspiring on the new model, but the low price is sure to attract budget conscious consumers that are looking for a BlackBerry.

Included in the retail package is the BlackBerry Curve 9310 smartphone, 1450 mAh battery, wall charger with detachable microUSB cable, and user guides.

Design:

The BlackBerry Curve 9310 closely resembles other BlackBerry devices, but is relatively compact at 4.29” H x 2.36” W x 0.5” D and is lightweight at only 3.66 oz. Because of this, it fits quite comfortably in the hand, and can inconspicuously be placed in your pocket. The black and gray metallic combination looks nice, and we like the texture on the back of the phone that provides a firm grip.

Faithful to its siblings, we find the optical trackpad and BlackBerry buttons located below the display. For the most part, we felt at home typing on them, but the QWERTY keypad can be cramped at times as we occasionally would press two keys at once. The keyboard is a far cry from larger one on the Bold 9930, which is the standard in the BlackBerry line-up.Location

On the left side of the device is the microUSB port and dedicated BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) button. Up on top is a 3.5mm headset jack and lock key, and on the right side is the volume keys and camera button. The 3.2 MP camera and LED flash are on the back, and removing the battery cover will allow access to the microSD memory card slot.

Display:

There isn’t anything too interesting about the display, as it comes in at 2.44” with a QVGA resolution of 320x240 pixels. Due to its lower resolution, you can clearly see jagged edges when looking at text or images, which is not present on the higher resolution display on the BlackBerry Curve 9370. Still, for the price, the display on the BlackBerry Curve 9310 isn’t bad, just not as good as we would like.

Our first look at what developers are using to make next-gen games.

Photos of a next-generation Xbox development kit have come online. The images were first spotted on the AssemblerGames forums when a user named DaE attempted to sell the kit for $10,000. At the time, the pictures were met with heavy skepticism and many assumed they were simply a hoax.

If you have been keeping up with the Xbox 720 leak saga, you’ll know that the term Durango has been waved around numerous times, sometimes referred to as just a codename, while other reports even put the name down as the final product name for the next Xbox.

we heard back in November that Xbox 720 development kits would be ready by Christmas 2011.

DaE reports that the most recent round of development kits were sent out in February, with Intel CPUs and an NVIDA graphics card. He says the kit sports 8GB of RAM (though other sources say 12GB) and has a 64-bit operating system.

We haven’t been able to verify these specs, but when we last heard about the system, sources told IGN it would be six times more powerful than current-gen consoles and would feature an AMD 6000 series GPU similar to the Radeon HD 6670. That specific processor includes support for DirectX11, a feature specified in most next-gen job listings. DaE also provided Digital Foundry with a screenshot of Microsoft’s Visual Studio coding tool being used for Durango.

A lot of you will probably say that it resembles a PC base. It remains to be seen though if this is the same black box that reportedly has six times the power of current gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. This isn’t obviously the final design of the next Xbox, but it could be a great indication.

Danger Close Exec. Producer Explains the Difference Between Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter

At first glance, Danger Close’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter and DICE’s Battlefield 3 seem rather similar. After all, they are both military first-person shooters, they are both set in a modern era and they both run on the Frostbite 2 engine. So, what exactly is the difference between the two?

Speaking to VG247, Danger Close executive producer Greg Goodrich explains just that.

“So, the difference between Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor – the two franchises – are essentially the size, scale and the scope for the military units that we’re talking about – not the game itself, but the military units,” explains Goodrich.

He continues, “so, Battlefield is all about the ‘big war’, the ‘sledgehammer’, the ‘what comes with the sledgehammer of overwhelming forces of tanks and jets and all the military industrial machines that come along with large forces’,” features we can look forward to even further in the upcoming Battlefield 3 DLC.

“Medal of Honor tells a story that focuses on the footsoldier, the scalpel, the precision instrument of warfare – the Tier 1 Operators,” counters Goodrich. “So, that’s sort of the the place where we fit into in the difference between the two shooters.”

iPhone 5 out September 21st?

The iPhone 5 will grace store shelves on 21st September, say sources close to Apple. The iPhone 5 is not the only Apple device rumoured for a September release.

Reports of that iPhone 5 release date stem from French blog App4phone.fr (via Cult of Mac). The site says a Chinese accessory-maker had been told by Apple to prepare for the date. The iPhone 5 had previously been predicted to launch in October.

A September date would be earlier than expected, it is thought to get the iPhone 5 in more hands by Christmas. However, as others such as website Cult of Mac has pointed out.

And that of course means readers are advised to take any September launch rumour serious with a pinch of salt. One thing we do know is that it is coming soon. The iPhone 5 is said to already be in production.

How do memory types differ? Here's a quick rundown on where DDR3 came from and what it means for your computer.

Shopping for most kinds of computer hardware is easy. If you pay even basic attention to the industry you're not going to have too much trouble following individual trends and understanding the basic specifications you'll find on desktops, laptops, or even components. But in your perusing the shelves at your local Best Buy or the e-stocks of an online retailer like Newegg.com, you may have noticed one unusual and even arcane-looking acronym come up time and time again: DDR3. What is it? What does it mean? And what happened to DDR and DDR2?

At its most basic, DDR3 is the current standard for system memory, aka RAM or, to get more specific, SDRAM. It's the fastest consumer RAM currently in widespread use, and the type you're most often going to want to buy (today, at any rate) if you want to upgrade your computer or if you're planning to buildone from scratch. DDR3 has all but replaced the older DDR and DDR2 in the marketplace, which is why these days DIMMs using those earlier technologies can be somewhat difficult to find and expensive to purchase.

But what exactly does the term "DDR3" mean? To understand that, you need to understand its history.

SDRAM, or synchronous dynamic random access memory, was developed in the early 1990s to solve a problem that began cropping up as computers became more powerful. Traditional DRAM used an asynchronous interface, which means it operated independently of the processor—which was not ideal if the memory couldn't keep up with all of the requests the processor made of it. SDRAM streamlined this process by synchronizing the memory's responses to control inputs with the system bus, allowing it to queue up one process while waiting for another. This way, computers couldexecute tasks much more quickly than had previously been possible, and was the memory standard in computer systems by the end of the 1990s.

It didn't take long after the introduction of SDRAM for hardware developers and regular users to determine that even this route had its limitations. The original SDRAM operated via a single data rate (or SDR) interface that, in spite of the type's overall advances compared with DRAM, could still only accept one command per clock cycle. As computers were becoming more popular and more complicated, and thus issuing more complex requests to the memory more frequently, this was slowing down performance.

Around 2000, a new interface method was developed. Called double data rate (or DDR), it let the memory transfer data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal, giving it the capability to move information nearly twice as quickly as with regular SDR SDRAM. There was another side benefit to this change as well: It meant memory could run at a lower clock rate (100-200MHz), using less energy (2.5 volts), and achieve faster speeds (transfer rates of up to 400 MTps).

As technology progressed and processors became still more powerful and demanding, DDR alone became insufficient. It was followed, in 2003, by DDR2, which refined the idea even further with an internal clock running at half the speed of the data bus; this meant it was about twice as fast as the original DDR (200-533MHz, with transfer rates up to 1,066MTps), but again used less power (1.8 volts). Naturally, DDR3 was next out of the gate (it debuted around 2007), with its internal clock cut in half again, its speed about twice that of DDR2 (400-1,066MHz, for a maximum transfer rate of 2,133MTps), and power usage reduced even more over its predecessor (to 1.5 volts).

(You may have already surmised the next logical step in memory technology. Indeed, DDR4 is already in development, and will probably begin appearing in consumer products around 2014, with wider adoption to follow gradually.It's expected to offer transfer rates of up to 4,266MTps, with voltage ranging from 1.05 to 1.2 volts.)

What's the down side to this constant improvement of memory? Unfortunately, you can't benefit from most of these advances without significantly upgrading—if not outright replacing—your current hardware: A DIMM that uses one kind of DDR interface will not work in a motherboard designed for another. Each type of memory is electrically incompatible with the others, starting with the number of pins on a chip (DDR desktop-style DIMMs have 184, and DDR2 and DDR3 each have 240), and DIMMs using each are keyed (or notched) differently so they can't even fit in the wrong kind of socket. It's therefore crucial that your existing hardware and the memory you want to add are of the same DDR type.

The good news is that because DDR3 is so prevalent today, you probably won't need to worry too much about this until DDR4 starts gaining ground in a couple of years. If your computer uses the DDR2 standard, there are definitely compatible chips out there, but expect to pay more and get less: A quick search on Newegg revealed an 8GB kit of high-speed G.SKILL DDR3 RAM available for $84.99; the same amount of slower DDR2 cost $149.99. And if your computer is stuck on the original DDR, you may want to consider a full-system upgrade. (A mere 2GB of that, also from G.SKILL and also slower, is $59.99.)

When you're purchasing memory, it's also best to verify that its speed matches that of your motherboard; otherwise, performance bottlenecks may result. At least this information is easy to determine from the memory's specs: If you have a motherboard that supports the DDR3 1333 standard (the "1333" references the memory's transfer rate, in MTps, not the actual speed of the memory, as is commonly assumed), you'll be fine as long as the memory uses that same designation. If the memory is slower (meaning, it has a lower DDR3 number) you won't be accessing your computer's full potential; if it's higher, you risk the processor not being able to keep up with it.

Neither, of course, is ideal: You'll get the best results when all of your computer's components are in harmony. Given the work and inspiration that went into DDR3, built on the platform of the types of memory that came before it, wouldn't it be a shame to not take advantage of the speed increases it offers if they're available to you?

Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels commented on the games:

Spec Ops: The Line looks like your average war shooter, but delve beneath the camo-gear, military-grade boots and AK-47s and you’ll discover a shooter that attempts to go emotionally deeper than any before it, says Stephen Ebert. Traditionally, the military shooter sub genre is full of action, but thin on plot. Spec Ops: The Line attempts to change that, with a story that raises all sorts of moral questions and situations during its course.

The more tense of these forces you to choose between killing a murdering soldier, or a thief at point blank range. Walking away would be a good idea, but the snipers trained on you tell you otherwise. A choice has to be made. One that will leave Captain Martin Walker feeling just as much of a good guy as those he’s out to stop.

Set in a modern skyscraper-filled Dubai battered and left derelict by sandstorms, Captain Walker sets out with two fellow squad mates in search of a Colonel John Conrad. But he finds all is not well. US soldiers already there have gone rogue, the citizens of Dubai are hostile, and everyone wants you dead.

It’s a story that lays the path for action at every turn, but Spec Ops: The Line’s biggest success is in making players realise the futility of war and ask themselves: is war really worth it?

The good

In its storytelling, Spec Ops: The Line attempts to stand out. The result is a story in which you find yourself caring more for your battle-hardened character than you may have in similar-themed titles, and one that after a few hours is guaranteed to have an emotional impact one way or another. War is brutal, it takes no prisoners. By the end of the game, players will realise this.

Yet the action never, ever stops. No matter the consequences. Spec Ops: The Line constantly reveals the ravages of war, and makes no apology for doing so. There’s someone waiting to shoot you at every turn. The cover-based action is relentless and well executed, offering up plenty of challenge on the process.

Cunning enemies constantly work to get the better of you, deliberately distracting you with bullets, while others flank you, or use grenades to smoke you out, leaving you nothing else to do but fight your corner. There are some neat instances where you can also use the landscape to your advantages. Shooting a building support might send sand tumbling down to smother your enemies. The landscape both hinders and aids players progress.

You’re helped by two fellow soldiers throughout. Tapping one of the shoulder buttons lets you command both or either to target enemies for you while you stay in cover, lending a handy co-op element to play. It’s a smart feature that if used well, can help you clear areas even when you’re out of ammo. Once they’ve done the dirty work, ransack the fallen foes gives you the chance to replenish your ammo once more.

A terrific cast and some great voice acting, led by Nolan North ( also the voice of Uncharted’s Nathan Drake) add some personality to what would otherwise have felt like a dreary shooter.

The bad

While kudos is due for a story that attempts to be different, it’s only later when things really pick up, and begin to become a little clearer. For too long players are left wondering what is is they are fighting for, where they are going, and where the story is headed. There’s a thin line between suspense and being lost in it all, and Spec Ops: The Line treads dangerously close to the latter.

The relentless action tends to grate towards the end. What initially feels like an all-action blockbuster soon becomes a bullet-strewn trudge from setting repeatedly doing the same thing, not helped by less than smooth cover mechanics that too often leave you prone to enemy fire, and too many untimely deaths. The cover mechanic either feels too sticky when you need to jump out of cover, or not sticky enough for when you need to take cover.

Multiplayer doesn’t have the same involving feeling you sometimes get with the single player campaign but, fans of communal shoot-em-up action will find a neat variety of maps on board that flesh out the Spec Ops experience. However, chances are you won’t be playing this one for too long after clearing the single player mode.

The bottom line

Spec Ops: The Line dares to be different. It succeeds some of the time, and confuses at others. There’s a lot to like, but when it comes to the crunch, Spec Ops: The Line is a capable shooter entertains and engages, but ultimately one we’ll soon forget. A good game that could have been great.

The Chinese Hacked Indian Navy Systems

According to the latest security reports, India has left contemplating its naval, as the Chinese hackers managed to take out the computer system on the National Navy’s Eastern Command.

The intruders managed to plant malware on the targeted system based near the city of Visakhaptnam. The malware in question sent sensitive information to specific IP addresses in China. Local media reported how the country’s first nuclear missile submarine, named INS Arihant, had been running trials at the facility and might have got the bug.

The malware was said to work the following way: it had created a hidden folder where it copied specific files and documents based on the keywords it had been programmed to identify. The folder remained hidden on the pen drives until those were put in the machines connected to the web. That’s when the bug silently sent the collected files to the specific IP addresses in China.

Thus far, it is unclear how much was stolen in the hacking raid. The experts also can’t say whether the malware in question operated like Stuxnet and needed to be installed within the system by a spook first. Meanwhile, India has already arrested six officers for procedural lapses that caused the breach. The authorities do not reveal whether any of the officers can later face spying charges.
