Has The Indian Microprocessor 'Shakti' Disappeared ?

The story began at 2018 when the RISE group from IIT Madras, India manufactured an opensource RISC-V architecture based microprocessor and booted Linux OS successfully on it. The thing is that if you are not from India then you might have no knowledge about its existence or you may have forgotten about it.

Basically the word 'Shakti' means 'Power' in hindi and as the name the processor was developed in order to create a powerful Indian competitor for other manufacturers Intel and ARM. The Shakti microprocessor has three core variants E-class, C-class and I-class you can read more about them in their official website but here is a short summary on the main purpose of each class.

E-Class : Embedded class processor specially for robotics and IoT devices.

C-Class : Controller class processors specially for mobile application. (0.5 GHz-1.5 GHz)

I-Class : High performance processors specially for networking and computing. (1.5 GHz-2.5 GHz)

As mentioned above Shakti is an opensource RISC-V based processor (note: RISC= Reduced Instruction Set Computer) and this is the cause of both advantage and loss of the processor and the explanation is given bellow.

Advantages of being an opensource processor

The fact that the designs of the processor is opensource meas that anyone from around the world can look at every single material and parts being used to manufacture the processor. This keeps the transparency between manufacturer and consumer and any problem in the design can be pin pointed and sorted out by professionals from around the world which makes it a lot faster and easier to detect and solve problems. Unlike ARM and Intel whose processor designs are private, Shakti's opensource design can be used by anyone to manufacture their own processors without facing any legal issues.

Disadvantages of being an opensource processor

Well if anything is opensource this means that anyone from around the world can use your design without paying you any royalty. For instance let us assume that Shakti some how became more powerful than Intel processors. Then in that case Intel could use the whole design of Shakti and maybe improvise it more and sell the new processor with Intel branding and the fun part is that Intel would not need to pay a single penny to the manufacturers of Shakti. This means that no matter how much achievements will be done by it those achievements would not be limited within Shakti processors and it wont even earn much from those achievements. This point will surely decrease its demand in market.

Current Situation Of Shakti Processors

Currently the processors are still on testing phage and the mass production date is still not clear. .With a collaboration with Intel a 22nm C-class processor was fabricated by Intel with code name RISECREEK and later another C-class processor was fabricated in ISRO's Chandigarh Fabrication Facility with code name RIMO but this was based on 180nm which is way too larger. Its most recent achievement is being able too boot Linux OS and it has been 1 year since any valuable news on the processors were released.

The founders of Shakti have released an SDK for developers to develop applications and software for the processor. Shakti is really trying to come out of the testing phage and release in market however for a very new processor there is exactly no space in the market. Other popular processor manufacturers have already occupied the market since very long time and with advanced specialties such as integration of 5G and plans on AI other manufacturers are way ahead of Shakti.

To get a good and stable entry in market first of all they should make processors based on smaller nano meters or the standard size which will be accepted in the market at its time of launch. This improvement in size will increase its possibility of success in market by not making it look primitive. Talking about other features with the maximum available speed of 2.5 GHz (In I-Class) this speed is still not enough for the time and must be increased of up to at least 3.5 GHz to 4.0 GHz with similar improvements in speed of E-class and C-class. Then finally for initial release in market RISE group must convince consumer about their processor performance and also convince developers to develop powerful software compatible with it. Again due to the fact that it is opensource hardware manufacturers can easily manufacture motherboard and other hardware compatible with the processor. Its efforts til now include the SDK release mentioned earlier.

Since these days a lot of tech giants are targeting India for their market it would be more suitable if RISE group also target their own country and some other selective countries at first. The fact that smartphone or mobile market is increasing day by day in India the C-class processor has the opportunity to launch successfully more than other two classes. Moreover the long forgotten Indian smartphone manufacturers including Lava, Micromax are planning to return to the market by launching new budget and mid-range smartphones, So RISE group can approach to those smartphone manufacturers with their C-class processors and if the deal is agreed Shakti will get a launch in the market and as it is an Indian processor it will also cost cheaper to smartphone manufacturers due to which the product smartphone's cost would be low but performance would be high.

Even if Shakti does not get a good launch in market it could still be used by the Indian government. So if treated well this processor project has a very good potential. For now there is no information about its use in future however still with the current known information the processor is still primitive and has a lot of rooms left for developement.

It surely is a very daring job to compete with international tech giants like Intel and ARM. Innovations these days are touching sky. With this devotion and use of human intelligence its pretty sure that computers are one day gonna be very efficient and intelligent.

Increase Your Battery Life & Performance By Applying These Simple Tips & Tricks

With the increasing dependency on smartphones everyone wants their devices to last longer. Its obvious that your battery percentage is not permanent and it will decrease eventually without any control. However users can still control their battery life after applying some simple measures. Yes users can decrease the rate of battery drain in their smartphones until and unless the battery has some physical or chemical damage in it.

Here are some tips to increase your battery life

Turn off or remove unwanted background running apps.

Turn on Developer Options (Settings->About phone->Build number Tap seven times on it ).
Go to Settings->Developer Options->Check Background turn off unwanted background apps.

For the requirements of some applications they keep on running on the background even though you are not using them. Most of these apps are helpful for user experience and the device's internal tasks but some of them maybe useless and just consuming battery power with no significant purpose. Turn off those useless apps to increase your battery life and RAM performance.

Turn off "Nearby device scanning"

Go to Settings->Connections->More connection settings->Nearby device scanning->Turn Off.

"Nearby device scanning" is a setting which is turned on by default on android devices. This feature is for searching any wearables like smartwatches, fitness bands or any other connectable wireless devices near to the devices. When turned on, it is always running in the background consuming some of the battery power. For normal users this feature is of no use an can anytime be turned on when it is necessary. For most cases it is recommended to turn off this setting for small but significant change in battery life.

Turn on "Dark Mode" (For devices with AMOLED displays)

Go to Notification Bar/Quick Settings->Dark Mode turn on.

In AMOLED screens if the pixels need to display black then those pixels turn off. So less active pixels means that the screen is consuming less battery. The purpose of Dark mode is to give a black theme to the overall UI and some other supported applications. Hence by turning on Dark mode on AMOLED screens most of the pixels in the screen are turned off due to which the screen consumes less battery. With this Dark mode is also good for your eye comfort.

Apple recently introduced their new feature called at clips in WWDC special event keynotes 2020. The event was held live online on YouTube where they introduced us to the some of the great features of iOS 14. Here we have our thoughts on new iOS 14 feature called "App Clips".

Basically App clips is a popup widget feature of apps displaying a notification on the basis of user activity or the place user is in. For example you could go to a coffee shop and a specific NFC enabled iPhone app for coffee or payments may show up as a pop-up notification. Unlike the traditional notifications this feature will enable users to see breif information on what's available. Moreover this eases the task where user need s to unlock their phone open up the specific app and perform its task.

This feature will surely help users' confusions on if some app is available for the task or any action they are going to perform. This might be a big point of advantage for iPhones considering that one cannot customize widgets in the home page like they can on Android devices. After the successful launch of Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra now the time has come for samsung to add a new smartphone to the Galaxy note lineup and as always leaks of the phone's specifications have already arrived the market. This time the leaks say that Samsung is officially discontinuing the time of flight (ToF) camera in Galaxy Note 20. This gives Apple a chance to win by having a LiDAR sensor in iPhone 12.

To explain in brief the time-of-flight sensor included in the camera setup of previous enabled the smartphone to capture Live focus videos, 3D scanning and enhancement in portrait mode shots. Time-of-flight sensors are a kind of depth sensor. These are cameras that don't take pictures but measures the distance between your phone and the object which you are shooting. This helps to improve the background blur effect. The ToF sensor was introduced by Samsung in Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G which is the latest smartphone available from the note series launched in 2019, then it was also included in Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra.

The only reason of Samsung ditching the ToF sensor is due to less interest in it by consumers even after many improvements in its software. The 3D scanning enabled by Tof sensors in the smartphones caused heating issues as it used more resources. Simply consumers could not find any effective use of it.

On the other hand the iPhone 12 releasing this year is rumored to include a LiDAR sensor in their rear camera setup. Apple phones have always been robust competitor to Samsung phones in terms of specs. This inclusion of LiDAR sensor will surely increase the AR status of the iPhone eventually beating Samsung Note 20 in the field. Similar situation has occurred in past between these companies when Apple introduced Animoji in iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 came with its AR Emoji, here Apple of course was the winner due to the IR sensors included in its front camera setup. Looks like something similar is going to happen this year.

Apple introduced LiDAR sensors in iPad pro 2020 models which uses laser technology similar to the ToF sensors but till now it has got positive reviews and user interests unlike Samsung. Also with the inclusion of A14 Bionic chip whose leaked benchmark scores have beaten the latest Snapdragomn 865 iPhone 12 may show the best AR performance.

However ditching the old technology may give an indication that a new one is going to be included but till now the leaks does not show any positive signs for it. Ditching the ToF sensor will definitely decrease Samsung's photo quality. Other leaks say that Note 20 will have a 120Hz refresh rate display, an upgraded S Pen and a new design. Improvements in battery life and performance is also expected.

It’s April 21^st 2020 and today is an interesting day for any astronomy enthusiasts all around the globe. If you don’t know what is going to happen today then you may thank me later for informing. An amazing cosmic light shower also known as the Lyrid meteor shower peaks tonight.

This is not something totally new to earth, The Lyrid meteor shower occurs every year between April 16 to April 26 (That is why they are also known as April Lyrids) and this year according to NASA the shower will peak tonight at 21^st of April starting from 10 pm. The reason of this meteor shower being special this year is because of new moon on the very next day so the cosmic lights would be widely visible and it is also special due to the social distancing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though people are far from each other they could enjoy this spectacular view of what they locally recognize as shooting stars.

Your grandparents may say that these are stars falling down to earth and that is why a meteor shower is commonly referred as ‘Shooting stars’. Keeping your grandparents’ imaginary tales aside the phenomenon of meteor shower occurs when debris of collapsed comets or dust particles and pieces of blown apart asteroids falling down to earth evaporate in Earth’s atmosphere due to heat produced with its friction with air. The extreme heat makes the falling meteor look like a fireball for a split second and disappears as the meteor totally evaporates.

Google Pixel 4, 4XL Leaks and release date

Google has been involved in the smartphone market since a very long ago. After the success of their nexus phones introduced their very first Pixel phones in 2016. Till today google has released up to 3rd generation of the Pixel phone ( i.e. Pixel 3, 3XL) and google is not willing to stop. This year google is preparing to release the fourth generation of the Pixel series which are Pixel 4, 4XL. Although any information about the Pixel 4 is not released publicly we have managed to collect some leaks about the Pixel 4.

1. Software

It is sure that the Google Pixel 4 will come with Android Q a.k.a Android 10. The beta version of Android Q is already available for Pixel phones and developers and reviewers are happy with new features and bug fixes. Android Q has very much helpful features such as giving an app location tracking permissions only when it is necessary.

2. Display

In 2018 Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL had one of the largest notches in their display. This time strong rumors say that google is going to implement a Punch-hole display. So the Pixel 4 will look more like Samsung Galaxy S10. Also rumors say that Samsung will provide the Punch-hole display.

3.Camera

With good software optimization Pixel phones are also known for their cameras. By AI enhancements previous Pixel phones could take portrait shots and high quality digital zoom through single camera so it never needed a secondary camera. However this time google is going to introduce dual camera setup and since google can take portrait shots from AI the secondary camera would probably not be a depth sensing camera similarly Google's AI can also capture good quality of digitally zoomed photos the chances of a telephoto lens as the secondary camera is also very less. Their is a very high chance of a wide-angle camera being the secondary camera. speaking about hte front camera Pixel 4 will have a singe front camera whereas Pixel 4XL will have a dual front camera setup. It will still support great features like the night mode.

The Pixel will have the latest snapdragon processor available. It will not have a headphone jack like in Pixel 3. Also they will try to reduce bezels as much as possible. It will also have an in-display finger print scanner .

You may have heard about the Event Horizon Telescope Project. In this project the goal was to set a group of telescopes on some parts of the globe and take photographs of the space in areas where the presence of black hole was hypothesized. Then through software help the photos were to be combined in order to spot and photograph of the black hole.

With the financial support of organizations like National Science Foundation and other organizations the Event Horizon Telescope Project was a success and the picture that you saw above is the result of the success. The black hole seen above is a super massive black hole present at the center of an elliptical galaxy named Messier 87.

The light seen around black hole is actually light produced when gases are sucked in a super fast speed. The speed causes friction between the gas molecules which then produces heat and light energy.

1. More megapixels Better quality

Like many people you may think that More mega pixels means the smartphones camera quality is better but it's totally wrong, Some smartphones are there which have better megapixels such as 16 megapixels or more but they can't even shoot in full HD but there are also some smartphones which are lower than 16 megapixels maybe 12 or so but also they can film in 4K.

2. Dual Camera means better picture

The concept of dual cameras in smartphones has been around for more than 3 years. Today we can even see two cameras in the front or the back of some budget smartphones too . This concept of dual camera in smartphones has created a miss believe in people that dual camera means you would get better features like autofocus or more zoom .Well, this is totally wrong even in a phone with single camera can do things like autofocus although it cannot do zoom like that telephoto lens but still it can take more good quality photos then the phones with dual cameras we can take pixels for example it has a single camera but do things like autofocus more accurately then some of the phones with dual camera. In other phones too can install some third party apps to unlock the feature of autofocus.

Every smartphones today come with a default camera app to take photos or shoot videos and we are so used to it that way think that this is the maximum features of our smartphone but that's not true like I said before some smartphones need third party application to unlock the maximum features like autofocus. Mini smartphones today also have a pro mode in the default camera app NY neighbouring this mode we can manually control things like white balance and ISO of our smartphone's camera. For example in Nepal Candy cam is a very famous third party camera application you could see a vast difference in the photo taken from your default camera app and the photo taken from the Candy cam application. Both the Candy cam and your default camera app takes photo from the same camera but also the quality of photo in Candy cam is better than the quality of photo in youcamera app takes photo from the same camera but also the quality of photo taken with the Candy cam AP is better than the quality of photo taken with the default camera application that you have in your phone. This clearly shows
That the maximum features of your camera is not unlocked totally in your default camera app.

4 Did you forget about camera aperture

Many offers ignore about the camera aperture when you are purchasing a smartphone for better camera but it shouldn't be ignored. Your camera aperture determines how better photos can you take in low light. Less camera aperture means greater photos even in low light conditions but white and photos in conditions with bright light. More camera aperture means good photos in daylight but almost black screen in low light conditions. So you must choose a phone with camera having a correct and medium camera aperture. Recent smartphone the Samsung Galaxy S9 can switch camera aperture from 2.4 ( to capture sharp images in Daylight ) to 1.5 (for low light situations). To conclude we can say that camera aperture is necessary.
