He teamed up with Debra Winger in one of the biggest movies of the time, “Urban Cowboy”. He plays the part of Buford “Bud” Uan Davis, who is small-town cowboy who goes to the big city of Houston. While in Houston, he hangs out at Gilley’s, a popular bar that is owned by the country singer, Mickey Gilley.

The storyline was based upon a contest for riding a mechanical bull and riding mechanical bulls became a fun pastime at bars and clubs for a while. Again, John Travolta was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role but this time he lost out to Tom Hanks for his representation of “Forrest Gump”.
