Mi TV 4 in India - How Xiaomi and Sensara Aim to Disrupt the TV Industry

Last week, Xiaomi surprised fans in India by finally launching the Mi TV in India - specifically, the 55-inch Mi TV 4, with a 4K HDR display, priced at Rs. 39,999. It's a good-looking television that's just 4.9mm thick for most of its body, and it features Xiaomi's PatchWall interface, that's been redesigned from the ground up for India. Our detailed review of the Xiaomi Mi TV 4 will be coming soon, but when we heard that the interface rejig was done with the help of Bengaluru-based Sensara, whose upcoming Sensy Fusion Box we had written about in June last year, we knew we had to see more about how the interface works.

We went down to the Xiaomi office in Bengaluru, where we met Bharat Mohan, the CEO of Sensara, along with Sudeep Sahu, the Xiaomi India product manager who is overseeing the TV project. All the lab spaces in the office are built for phones, and so the recreation area has been turned into a TV lab, and there are multiple TVs from other brands, and set top boxes. It's a scene that's actually a little reminiscent of the Sensara office as well, as testing has to be carried out across multiple devices.

Xiaomi and Sensara have actually been working together for three years now, since Sensara has been providing its IR and DTH expertise to Xiaomi for its Mi Remote functionality, which uses phone-based IR-blasters. For phones that don't have an IR blaster, Sensara's Sensy remote takes commands from the phone via Bluetooth, and converts that into IR, and a similar technology is at work with the newly launched Mi TV's Mi IR cable.

"We've worked together for the last three years, and in the last six months, we really got down to work on the Mi TV," says Sahu. "One of the questions we went back and forth on a lot was whether we should do the TV or bring a Mi Box. We could sell a million units of the box maybe, but it wouldn't have as much of an impact, and build a brand."

"Hugo [Barra, then VP International at Xiaomi] was very keen to bring this to India, Jai [Mani, Lead Product Manager at Xiaomi] was also very keen to bring this, but he didn't want to just bring a monitor, it had to be something that actually disrupted the market," adds Sahu.

That's where Sensara entered the picture. Its Sensy remote is already on the market, and the Sensara Fusion would bring that experience off the phone, and onto the big screen. In India, cord-cutting is still rare, and OTT services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hotstar are all still in their early days with most of these having relatively small paying subscriber counts, compared to the 66.99 million paid DTH subscribers in the country.

"In India, the linear television market is still a huge opportunity, unlike in other parts of the world, and we wanted to address that experience," says Sensara's Mohan. The Mi TV works a lot like the Sensy app - you see recommendations that are personalised for your interests, channels with nice visual cards, content cards and there's a search function that lets you do something like look for HD English movies, or just look for cricket to find all the different channels you can turn to. But the two teams worked closely together to bring in some more features as well. "Much of the time, I was just working from their [Sensara's] office," quips Xiaomi's Sahu.

"When you look at the interface, you'll see things like period dramas, because right now Padmavat is still a big thing so that's not available yet, but people might be interested in things like Jodha Akbar," he continues. "Or, it was Hritik Roshan's birthday recently, so someone put together a list of his movies."

The PatchWall UI is laid out in tiles of different sizes, and Sahu says that the idea is that it should resemble a magazine, instead of just being uniform. That's an idea taken from the original Chinese PatchWall, but Sahu's team took it a little too literally at first, he tells us. "The first piece of feedback we got was that the font we took was horrible, because we were using Times, which is used a lot in print, and it didn't look as good on the TV view."

Trying out the remote, we were impressed by how smooth and quick every action was, and how changing channels and opening content was consistently snappy. However, we were a little surprised that the Mi TV used a wired IR blaster, rather than having a solution built into the Mi TV 4, or going with a wireless unit like the Sensy remote.

"The problem with putting it in the TV is that you might not get the right line of sight [from the IR blaster] to the DTH set top box," explains Mohan. "Like some people keep their set top box behind the TV, some have trays and keep it out of the way like that, so we had to make it easily adaptable. As to wireless - some people had given us negative feedback about Bluetooth, and Xiaomi also wanted to go with wired, so we came up with this."

Mohan shows us a prototype Mi IR cable - it looks a lot like the final version, but the wire is thin and flimsy, and the overall design lacks the polish of the final product. "I was really impressed by how fast they [Xiaomi] worked on this, we went from the first concept to the final production in under four months," he tells us. This wasn't the only hardware that was being tweaked for India though. "The sound setup was almost completely overhauled, and the brightness and colour settings have all been tweaked because people like the display to be much more vibrant in India than they do in China," explains Xiaomi's Sahu. "So we had to do a lot of tweaking to make it suitable for India. We added resistors so that it's safe even if there's voltage fluctuation, which also happens a lot more here."

The bulk of the work though, was on PatchWall, and while thanks to Sensara, the DTH part of the equation was pretty elegantly solved, the company also had to work with other OTT providers to bring them onto the platform. So far, the biggest names - Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix are not on the Mi TV 4, though Sahu says Xiaomi is talking to everyone, and not to rule out any additional entries. For now, if you're subscribing to one of those, you'll still need your Fire TV Stick or Apple TV or something along those lines. But other services such as Voot, Hungama, Alt Balaji, Sun NXT and more are already available, and show up in the universal search results. Other apps can be side-loaded - Sahu shows us a cool feature where you can download apps to your phone, and then automatically side-load them on the TV using the Mi Remote app.

The driving idea is that you - the viewer - are interested in content, and not where it's coming from. Instead of locking that into silos, with PatchWall, you can easily move from one piece of content to the next, which will be played from whichever provider has it. "So we don't do the delivery - it's your media player, your CDN, your DRM," says Sahu. He adds that the work for Mi TV started with going to these content companies, and getting them to understand PatchWall. "Apart from Hotstar, most of the Indian content players had good mobile experiences but not for TV, so for many of them, PatchWall is a great option," adds Sensara's Mohan.

According to him, there's a big need for something simple that comes in a single box, because many of the stakeholders in television end up outsourcing the fine details when working on projects like smart TV and smart set top boxes. "We're still making the Sensy Fusion as well," he adds, "and we've been talking to other TV and DTH companies as well, because fundamentally we are B2B2C. Working with Xiaomi has been great for us though, because they have a good reputation and it's made starting our pitch simpler."

We were curious about how Xiaomi and Sensara were able to collect feedback on the Mi TV's Indian interface and still keep things under wraps though. "We did a lot of testing internally, and placed televisions in our team members houses," says Xiaomi's Sahu. "So the families of these Xiaomi employees gave us a lot of feedback, and some of them have told us that they can't go back to a regular TV anymore, which was very encouraging."

At this point though, the work has just started for both companies. Xiaomi aims to deliver an update every month - although this is something that might need fine tuning, since most people are not used to having to update their TVs at all, leave alone that frequently. Still, regular updates will lead to new features. "By the time we are selling the TVs, we will already have some updates waiting, so we'll have to see how people respond," says Sahu. A lot of work is also happening on the remote, adding new functionality, and features like profiles. Right now, Sensy on the Mi TV suggests shows on the air based on what people have been watching, but once you can have profiles, these can be tailored to each person in the house.

There are a number of smart 4K TVs of this size, at this price point - though not many with HDR - but Xiaomi is hoping that this kind of long term roadmap, where it can continue to improve on the television experience, is going to help it stand out from the competition. Although we'll have more to say about the television itself in our review, a lot of what its doing in terms of the experience itself seem to be headed in the right direction.

Bitcoin exchanges plan to maintain user database

In the past, both the government and the central bank have cautioned citizens about trading in cryptocurrencies.

New Delhi: Bitcoin exchanges, rattled by the finance minister terming the Cryptocurrency as illegal tender, are planning to create a central repository of users that will help create and maintain a real time record of transactions.

The purchase data of buyers and sellers of the virtual currency can then be traced through either the Aadhaar ID or the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the user. Details such as the total number of cryptocurrencies held, the value thereof as well as the pattern of buying and selling by individual users will be available through the central repository, according to a top industry member.

“This is one of the proposals we are planning to submit to the government committee which is looking into the issue of cryptocurrency,” said Ajeet Khurana who heads the Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Committee (BACC) of the Internet and Mobile Association of India. The committee has seven cryptocurrency exchanges as its members.

Khurana said the BACC aims to submit the proposal to the government committee, which is headed by Economic Affairs Secretary SC Garg, during the course of this week. In turn, the government panel is expected to submit its recommendations by March. The government is also expected to appoint a regulator to monitor trade in cryptocurrencies.

On February 1 while presenting the annual Budget to the Parliament, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government will eliminate the use of crypto assets in financing illegitimate activities.

In the past, both the government and the central bank have cautioned citizens about trading in cryptocurrencies.

The Indian tax authorities have sent out an estimated 100,000 notices to investors asking them to reveal profits earned on cryptocurrency trading and to pay the applicable tax. Industry members estimate that in 2017, trade in bitcoins was worth about ?10,000 crore with around five million Indians actively trading in the cryptocurrency.

Currently, cryptocurrency exchanges require users to submit both PAN card and the Aadhaar number alongwith bank account details in order to create a trading account. The proceeds from all transactions are credited to the same account. However, as each exchange operates exclusively, this data is not shared.

“There was ‘panic selling’ for some time (after) FM Jaitley mentioned cryptocurrency (as illegal tender) in his Budget speech. But things have ‘stabilised’ thereafter,” said Nischint Sanghavi, head of bitcoin exchange Zebpay, which follows KYC (Know Your Customer) norms as well as the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations stipulated for the banking sector.

“We are doing everything to have a self-regulated industry and once data pooling begins, verifying customer details will be faster,” he said.

The BACC is also planning a “code of conduct” for the industry. “These exchanges don’t deal with cash and will adopt the best practices applicable for the banking industry,” said Khurana.

Globally, countries like the US and South Korea are also trying to chart out a road map for trade in virtual currencies. Japan was one of the first to introduce regulatory oversight over cryptocurrencies, announcing a new set of regulations in April 2017.

“Though the government has specified that cryptocurrencies are not legal tender, we hope to present to the government committee that people can still trade in them like they do in ‘stock or gold’,” said Khurana.

How PNB $2 billion scam exposes the biggest flaws in the Indian banking system

KOLKATA: Amid the blame game between Punjab National Bank (PNB) and other affected lenders in the Rs 11,300-crore scam, the elaborate web of deception has served to expose the biggest flaws in the Indian banking system – weak risk management practices and glaring over sight lapses.
While international banks tightened supervision and corporate governance after the subprime credit crisis in 2008, most Indian banks appear to have remained laggards.
Doubts are now being raised in several quarters as to how PNB officials at Mumbai’s Brady House branch continued to issue letters of undertaking (LoU) against import receipts from Nirav Modi and his firms for seven long years without attracting management supervision. Overseas branches of other lenders such as Axis Bank or Allahabad Bank issued buyers’ credit against these LoUs. The money has been credited into the Nostro account of PNB's branch.
Nostro account refers to an account that a bank holds in a foreign currency in another bank. PNB had honoured the claims until January 5, but has now dubbed these transactions as fraudulent. “We will honour all our bonafide commitments,” PNB chief Sunil Mehta said on Thursday in his first interaction with the media after the scam became public.

“If these LoUs are fake, how did PNB honour the claims all these years?” asked a veteran bank executive who headed three banks in the past. “It is difficult to believe that the knowledge of malpractices remained confined to a handful of people. It demonstrates the failure in management supervision,” he said.

Nostro accounts in banks nowadays are being reconciled real time. And all branches authorised to deal in foreign exchange would know the details of such accounts.
“When frauds with a similar design happen on a repetitive basis, it becomes a matter of concern. It is regrettable that frauds based on letters of credit, supporting fake transactions of purchases, have happened in the past in the jewellery sector,” said Vinod Kothari, a senior chartered accountant. “Banks’ internal controls need to be strengthened. Fraud protection is essentially a duty of the bank,” Kothari said.
According to the Central Vigilance Commission rules, organisations and their chief vigilance officers are mandated to identify people working in sensitive positions and ensure that they get transferred every two/three years. International banks require their officers to go on vacation when peer review is conducted: Indian banks haven't adopted such practices yet.

The PNB branch manager in question was in the same position for about seven years until he retired in January and handled one account for all these years, underscoring the lacunae in risk management and oversight functions at Indian lenders.
“Most Indian banks do not follow this rule,” said a senior banker who was earlier worked as CVO.

Crypto ‘Unlikely To Disappear’, Says Internal Report Attributed To J.P. Morgan

J.P. Morgan has called cryptocurrencies the “innovative maelstrom” around Blockchain and said they are “unlikely to disappear” in what appears to be an internal report from the company, published Feb. 8, 2018.

In an extract from what is allegedly the banking giant’s executive summary on cryptocurrency, the company appears bullish on crypto’s future.

“Cryptocurrencies are the face of the innovative maelstrom around the Blockchain technology that is bringing both massive price volatility and a constant trial-and-error of new product try-outs and failures,” the report states.

Despite the report’s mixed tone, the distinction from J.P. Morgan’s public position on cryptocurrency over the past six months is palpable.

In September, 2017 J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon became notorious after he called Bitcoin a “fraud,” triggering the very price volatility the bank now cites as a “challenge” crypto assets face.

Dimon subsequently claimed he was “not going to talk about Bitcoin anymore,” while last month publicly disclosing he “regretted” making the fraud comments.

Speaking to Cointelegraph at the World Economic Forum in January, 2018, Dimon flatly refuted the idea that he was a “skeptic” on Bitcoin.

The recently published report meanwhile offers ideas as to how cryptocurrencies could be used most effectively.

“CCs [Cryptocurrencies] are unlikely to disappear and could easily survive in varying forms and shapes among players who desire greater decentralization, peer-to-peer networks and anonymity, even as the latter is under threat,” the summary continues in a positive vein.

Bitcoin hits 2-month low in India on Jaitley’s Budget comments

Bitcoin prices hit lowest level in two months in the country on Friday after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Budget announced that the government did not consider cryptocurrencies as legal tender or coins and would take all measures to eliminate the use of these crypto-assets in financing illegitimate activities or as part of the payment system.
Bitcoin was trading over 15 per cent down at Rs 5,44,735 in the afternoon trade at around 1.05 pm against its previous close of Rs 6,44,042.
However, FM further added that the government will explore use of blockchain technology proactively for ushering in digital economy.
Ashish Agarwal, Founder, Bitsachs said, "Jaitley's statement doesn't make bitcoin illegal in India. But it will create panic among investors and service providers most importantly banks. If banks stop support, exchanges will have to shut down services with fiat money."

On the other hand, Rashmi Deshpande, Associate Partner, Khaitan & Co said, "The announcement on the cryptocurrency by the FM should not be misinterpreted to mean the cryptocurrency is going to be discouraged by the government. In addition, the government has recognized the viability of blockchain technology that powers cryptocurrency. Efforts should be made to bring in regulations at the earliest to achieve this aim."

Welcome back to our weekly roundup of all the news you can use from the world of tech. This week, one of the highlights was the launch of a third variant of the Xiaomi Redmi 5. Packing 4GB of RAM, it's a step up from the existing 2GB and 3GB options, and its price in China is CNY 1,099 (roughly Rs. 11,000), a premium of CNY 200 (roughly Rs. 2,000). There's no official news about the Redmi 5 coming to India just yet, though the launch might well be around the corner.

To recall, the Xiaomi Redmi 5, which was launched in December, has a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display, and it's powered by an octa-core Snapdragon SoC. There are three RAM variants as mentioned above, and while the 2GB variant comes with 16GB of storage, the others have 32GB storage. There's a 12-megapixel rear-camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, along with a 3300mAh battery. Meanwhile in India, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A also got a new variant, but this just an additional colour - rose gold. The entry level phone is presently available at just Rs. 4,999 for the variant with 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage, and has a 5-inch HD display, along with a 3000mAh battery.

Xiaomi also announced an update the rollout for MIUI 9.2 - the Xiaomi Redmi Note and Redmi Note Prime are both getting the update, as is the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, though that phone will get a version based on Kitkat. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has also started receiving the MIUI 9 update.
Meanwhile, HMD Global has launched the 4G variant of the Nokia 3310 (2017). The new Nokia 3310 4G has only been listed in China right now, and price and global availability details of the new Nokia 3310 variant are likely to be announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, later this month. The company is no doubt hoping for a repeat of MWC 2017, when it stole the show by revealing the rebooted Nokia 3310.

Apart from that, the company had some more good news for interested buyers in India. The Nokia 8 and Nokia 5 both saw price cuts in India, of Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively. This brings the Nokia 8 price down to Rs. 28,999 from Rs. 36,999, and the Nokia 5 goes from Rs. 13,499 to Rs. 12,499. This is a pretty good deal, but it comes just weeks before a slew of Nokia phones, including the Nokia 8 (2018) model, are expected to make an appearance at MWC 2018.

OnePlus kicked off the week by announcing a buyback programme in India - the company is allowing users to exchange an old handset to get a discount on the OnePlus 5T. This exchange is being powered by Cashify, along the same lines as Xiaomi's smartphone exchange programme, which was announced in November. In both cases, the Cashify team determines the exchange value, but in this case, you can avail the buyback service only after a smartphone order has been placed on the OnePlus website.

However, OnePlus also faced a spyware allegation this week - French security researcher Elliot Alderson alleged on Twitter that the company is identifying and uploading clipboard data such as bank account numbers and emails to a Chinese server. OnePlus has refuted the claim, and stated that the code in question was inactive for its global users. In some good news for its users, the OnePlus 5T also got new features this week, bringing iPhone X-like gestures, and SMS categorisation for Indian users.

At the same price, Airtel offers 1GB data per day, unlimited local and STD calls, free roaming, and 100 SMS messages per day for 28 days. Vodafone, however, offers 1GB data per day at Rs. 149, along with unlimited calls, no charges for calls made while roaming, 100 SMS messages per day for 28 days.

Around the Rs. 200 price point, Jio users will get 2GB data per day for 28 days at Rs. 199 courtesy the Republic Day 2018 Offer, along with the same freebies as mentioned above. Airtel offers 1.4GB data per day for 28 days at Rs. 199, while Vodafone offers the same at Rs. 198; both plans come with the respective above-mentioned freebies.

Jio, Airtel, Vodafone plans under Rs. 300
Under Rs. 300, only Jio has a plan with a daily data allocation - subscribers will get 3GB data per day for 28 days, meaning a total of 84GB data for the entire validity period. Of course, the free calls, SMS messages, and apps subscriptions will be available with this recharge too.

Jio, Airtel, Vodafone plans under Rs. 400
The Mukesh Ambani-backed operator presently offers 1.5GB data per day for 70 days at Rs. 349, while Airtel and Vodafone give 2.5GB data per day for 28 days at the same price. At Rs. 398, Jio users will get 2GB data per day for 70 days, and 1.5GB per day for 84 days at Rs 399. Subscribers of both Airtel and Vodafone will get 1GB data per day for 70 days at Rs. 399. The respective freebies apply for each telecom operator.

Jio, Airtel, Vodafone plans under Rs. 500

At Rs. 448, Rs. 449 and Rs. 498, Jio offers 2GB data per day for 28 days, 1.5GB data daily for 91 days, and 2GB data a day for 91 days, respectively. With the Rs. 448 recharge pack, Airtel gives prepaid customers 1.4GB data per day for 82 days, while Vodafone gives the same daily data allocation for 84 days at Rs. 458.
