Is Agent Jadoo still there or was it just a Hoax?

It was not long ago that a new software for monitoring illegal distribution of Malayalam movies through the world wide web made into the news. But since the initial controversies, "Agent Jadoo" has entered into a state of "hibernation" and has not been in news lately. The software which claimed to be capable of detecting the download of files which have been uploaded illegally into torrent websites was a Government of Kerala undertaking to contain movie piracy.

But considering the way it has gone down in news, one might start doubting if it was all just a hoax, something to generate fear in user's heart. The doubt arises because there are still newly released movies available in the internet and people are still downloading them, and nobody even cares now. But our sources tell us that "Agent Jadoo" is not a Hoax and has in fact been successful.

Ok. So we know that the software exists,but does it have the ability to do what it claims? Because if it does, then how is it able to track a person who has downloaded a file from torrentz which uses peer-to-peer download and the data is distributed all around the world into different computers? It seems impossible, but the development team says it is possible. News is that it was developed by a team of students from an Engineering college and that they have signed a "non-disclosure" agreement with the government about the software.

Whatever it is, one thing is sure, that the so called "Agent" is now in hibernation and is not busy doing whatever it is supposed to do.

Google's monopoly in search engine world on the edge ?

The titan of the IT world, Google has it's name in synonym with the word "search" since the beginning of the 21st century. People say "google it" rather than "search the internet". That much is the monopoly Google possess over the internet and the users. But with the advent of the mobile computing era, it is evident that google will definitely have to re-adjust it's strategies if they wanna hold onto their monopoly.
In a smartphone world, people rely on specific apps for specific needs. There was a time when people had to rely on google to find anything and everything ranging from the name of an actress in a particular movie to information about a historical person for example. But nowadays people know that they can go to the imdb website and know every detail of and actor who casted in a movie, or they can go to wiki and search for anyone or any place on earth. They don't need to rely on a mediator like google for their needs when they already know these "curated websites" with large databases.

Google has survived microsoft's heavily-funded efforts to change the word "google it" to "bing it", but they might lose the war if they don't look more into mobile platforms. Recently facebook has announced that it will be launching a new software for Android phones which will turn the phone literally into a "facebook phone". Facebook has seen the future of social networking and has shifted their approach, which is also evident from the fact that they have made the timeline feature available in phone browsers.

When users are heavily relying on curated apps for their needs, it is no surprise that Google saw a 3 % decline in their web searches in the second half of last year, while the vertical searches saw a rise of 8% in the mean time! Rather than googling, people now use these curated apps for their needs.

Google is still the giant of internet as of now, but for how long is something that we have to wait and watch.

Microsoft gives up on Office for Mac 2008 - no more support

Microsoft has said that it will not be providing any support or security updates for the Office suite for Mac from April 9 onwards. The decision only stand valid for the Mac users, while the Windows users will continue getting support twice as long. The support for Office in Mac was designed for 5 years and for windows users it was 10 years. Now that the Office 2008 for Mac has passed the 5 year period, they will not be receiving any future updates. They can still use it to create or edit documents however.

Anonymous launches DDoS on North Korean Pages

The hacker's community Anonymous claims to have been hacking and vandalizing many social networking profiles linked to North Korea. Several warnings were also issued by the group to the North Korean government following the rise in the country's threats of war. N. Korean news site "uriminzokkiri" has been forced offline and some of the twitter and flicker accounts have been breached, according to anonymous.

Anonymous claims to have accessed more than 15,000 usernames and passwords from a University database. They are referring this attack as "Operation Free Korea", and has called for leader Kim Jong-un to step down and a democratic government be put in place, along with uncensored internet access for the North Koreans.

Currently only a selected few in the country have access to internet and only has a few websites that are run by the govenment. Although they recently allowed foreigners access to mobile internet, but has been shut off now.

Anonymous says that this is only a sample of the hacked information after they shared a few stuff publically in the internet. The website of Air Koryo, the country's airline was also unreachable.

Anonymous has been implementing the technique known as DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service), a method in which they flood the website with so much traffic than it can handle.

Facebook releases its home environment in Android - takes facebook direct to the home!

The social network facebook has announced that it will be releasing a new software for Android powered devices, which will put feeds from the user's account directly on the home screens. Although not an operating system, it will act as a wrapper for the android OS and will make it simpler for people to use their phone and Facebook account together.

The notifications, images and feeds will appear on the home screen instead of being downloaded from another 3rd party app. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg has stated that this change would put user not apps at the heart of the mobile experience.

Facebook's home software will hide all other applications and instead pipe all the content and chat from the social network onto the user's handset home. The software is designed in such a way that it will enhance the way the user interacts with the facebook by letting them respond by tapping on popup images known as chat heads, rather than relying on another app and navigating through menus.

The software will be available from the Google Play store and will run only on Android version 4.0 or higher. For the start facebook will be available for only 6 android devices - 3 from HTC and 3 from Samsung, out of which only 4 are available now, the rest 2 are set to be launched along with the facebook software.

Facebook believes that this move will help them generate more revenue through ads, as the world is turning more and more into mobile computing. The software version supporting tablets is under development right now, and there has been no word from facebook whether it will be developing the software for Windows or ios yet.

Microsoft gearing up for the release of Windows 8.1

Microsoft has announced that the next Operating system that they would be releasing will be called Windows 8.1, which had been codenamed Windows Blue before. They have made it clear that the new OS will not be a Windows 9, but Windows 8.x series. We think this might be because microsoft had earlier said that they expect windows 8 to be a multi season product, so it makes sense when they dont take the windows 8 label from their new product!

Also, the advent of Windows 8.1 might also pave way for some new 7 inch tablets in support of it's features. I have been a windows user for more than i can remember and i have used all the versions starting from 98. Windows 7 has by far been the best microsoft has produced in the PC operating systems. With most of the drivers coming preloaded in the kernel, windows 7 offered some kind of "out of the box" experience it had been lacking for so long, although it can't be compared with GNU/Linux or Mac OS. But windows still remained favourites among a majorty of users.

While they were trying to put windows in to more compact portable devices through windows 8, i feel that they have taken out some of the cool user interactivtiy features that has been the trade mark of windows OS. So it's not a big surprise if windows 8 did not make any significant impact in the market against it's expectations. Also the recent price slash in windows 8 product reveal that microsoft might be getting a little impatient here.

They should be hoping a comeback through the windows blue a.k.a windows 8.1.

The Indian Government is going to launch a pilot project, a new technology that helps a person to locate or track the Mobile phones on the real time basis (current postiton, the tower where the person belonging etc.).

The Department Of Telecom (DoT) along with the technology experts of Telecordia is planing to launch the service soon in India. We can expect the trial of this service, most probably for next year.

By locating the Mobile Phones on the real time basis, the cyber cell can overcome the traditional mobile device challenges such as mobile theft, invalid device blocking, counterfeiting and cloning detection.

The technology seems “worthwhile” to top DoT officials and the Secretary is of the view that trials can be conducted at no cost to the government to assess the utility of the proposal, sources said.

Before starting the trial of this service, DoT is working hard with MITS (MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution) to avoid the misuse of data that is collected during the trial service.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance Android Jelly Bean Update Landing in January

Samsung has recently announced on social networking site Facebook that they are planning to upgrade the operating system of Galaxy S Advance to Android Jelly Bean in January. As everyone is enthusiastic about the new OS Jelly Bean by Android, Samsung has decided to upgrade it to provide better services to all the users. Although the date isn’t mentioned but the month has been specified. The upgrade will be available through Samsung Kies and Over The Air (OTA).
